Omg I am so deeply sorry u r going thru it with your dog💜
She was dx at 9 and we put her to sleep at 11
Never lost her mind or appetite or zest for life but the disease made its way from her tail up to her chest she had no decal or urinary control but we just kept adjusting to her deterioration because she never gave up
Finally she could no longer stay upright in a laying position she would just topple from side to side
It was so hard putting an alert oriented girl to sleep
      I miss her beyond words

It is rough, my gsd was put to sleep on 01/13/24. The hardest part is to see the soul in the failing body. It is the most heart wrenching thing to go thru on this planet, there is no human filter between you and your loved one. My GSD was fine living with stage 3 for 12 months, stage 1 and 2 onset 24 months ago. If your dog has DM walk him her as much as you can, buy a rear hip leg harness and carry him her. What ever you do don't try the new dog arthritis medication, liberal it will knock your dog down and stages 4,5,6 will happen in 8 days. I am waiting to join the class action law suit against the manufacture of this drug.

My 13 year old pit mix showed signs of this 6 months ago. She is not in any pain but at the onset I could tell she was confused as to why she couldn’t walk or control her rear legs. She is more accepting of it now and realizes she can run better than walk. (Her rear feet touch the ground at the same time and are only on the ground for seconds so no time to loose balance..YAY). Rear legs cross when walking and she drags knuckles and walks on the top of her rear feet. It breaks my heart. Thank you for this video!

My 16-year-old Labrador mix is in stage 3, and I have been struggling with delusions that I could influence and improve her situation with rehabilitation / exercise. Knowing that I cannot help with her situation makes the course of action clear, intolerable as it is. We will not force her to endure stage 4.

I keep my 14 year old Pit mix as active as she can tolerate. The activity is so good for her physically and emotionally. If she does too much though her back legs give out. Her vet prescribed Rimadyl for inflammation and pain. I started her on CBD oil about 9 months ago and it has definitely helped her overall. I give her a massage every day concentrating on her weakened leg muscles. This is such a devastating, heartbreaking and sad disorder.

He wears the balloon like boots for his back feet and I take him a little walk into the field I don't walk him on tarmac. He has had this 2 yrs now, we have a dog buggy when we go to the Lakes. I know he isn't happy but he manages to come out and get some fresh air. I need to put him out regularly as he has lost control of his back passage, we have had a few incidents but not many. My chihuahua has a problem walking that the vet doesn’t know what it is. The front paws are 20 degrees out and walking on his wrists. He is 5 years old. This change in his front paws was gradual over 2 years. He is 4 pounds…on prednisone every 2 days for a skin allergy Nyd. Now, 3 weeks he has also begun to walk on the back heels of his paws…the vet said ankles. So, all distal limbs are involved. He walks on grass or any soft surface for about 30 feet to smell, lick grass and do his business…that is all. When the vet did range of movement on him, all the paw joints were loose and the front right paw popped out then put back in. My dog did not squirm or yelp! The vet thought all his ligaments/tendons were over stretched….said it was a possible genetic problem of some sort. My dog Wolfie is not in any pain, great appetite and loves to play. He just cannot walk…..all paws affected…..nails and pads look normal. Do you have any ideas or thoughts and have you ever seen this?

This sounds a lot like what my American Eskimo Dog went through, except he didn't drag his feet and wear on his knuckles. Everything else fits, except this came in waves, improved and got worse progressing gradually until the end. He was eating well right up until the night we put him to sleep. He was going outside with help of a sling. I heard him struggling. He couldn't get up and he was panting very hard. He was turning blue. He looked panicky. I took him to the emergency clinic where he was euthanized. He was nearly 14. Can this disease come and go while gradually getting worse like that? This is the closest description I've seen, but not exact, and I still don't know what his diagnosis was.

I'm actually grateful now that I know what she has. She has been incontinent for a while. This week she started to walk on her back knuckles that's how I figured it out.
I will give her Lion's mane.
I have been giving her camelina oil an omega 3 -6 -9 and it definitely seems to help.
I will add turmeric back into her diet and a naturopath is coming to the house tomorrow to check her out, mostly just to confirm the diagnosis.
It's spring and I am going to try to find ways to get her out to enjoy the lake a bit before things progress too far.
She is 130lbs and I cannot lift her so our time is limited...

I have a 16 yr old dachshund who seems to be in stage 3. Not one vet I’ve taken him to has diagnosed him with DM!
He’s very thin, but eats more than my pit bull! I’ve been told he has everything from dementia or liver failure to arthritis and dental problems. I’m sure it’s DM-Now I feel like there’s nothing I can do for him, because he wasn’t diagnosed sooner. He still walks -morning is hardest, but in the evening he’s usually doing better. His tail twitches when he’s awake. It’s rhythmic, like a heartbeat. He falls over and I’ve had to put his food and water higher, so he doesn’t step in it. I feel helpless- I wish there was something I could do to help him.

I have a 15 yr old basset who had a large tumor removed from the middle of his back a couple of years ago and has another one growing now on his neck. We noticed the 'drunken sailor' going on a while ago and more recently urinary incontinence. This morning he literally stopped using his legs. it happened very suddenly. I've booked him an appt a week away. In the meantime I'm not sure how he will use the stairs to get to the yard to take care of business. He hasn't been diagnosed, but it all seems very similar.

Two years ago me and my almost 15 year old German shepherd x staffy were exploring the woods, now he can barely stand and I'm facing the harsh reality of having him pts soon. He can walk a short distance when he's up but he falls often. He can still feed and go to the toilet (with occasional accidents) but it's getting harder by the week. He couldn't get up this morning and snapped at my GF when she tried to help him up. He's fallen a few times and has been unable to get up without help. He can't walk far without panting in pain. This no life for him, he loves the great outdoors and chasing squirrels too much.

My 15 yr old ACD definitely has this - for many months now. However, due to the passing of my long time vet, I took him to a new vet (initially just for more meloxidyl), he convinced us to let him get an injection of Adequan (with follow ups scheduled). This was yesterday - now, he can barely walk at all. He was fine when he went in. Basically at stage two, but still wagging tail, just dragging one foot occasionally, tail was still up and wagging...slight struggle to get up. What is this injection all about? I don't see anything about this as a side effect. Did the vet hit a nerve?

If your dog is in an earlier stage try swimming and physio therapy. Also be prepared to let the dog go. I cried like a little kid and will probably for a long time coming. But i didn't want my best friend to die miserably because i couldn't let go. Good luck.

I have had three pugs over the years -- all unrelated -- and all three wound up with degenerative myelopathy. Stage one began around age 9. My current pug is now 12 years and is at stage five. It occurred exactly as this video portrayed. Heartbreaking. The dog is mentally unchanged, still enjoys eating, barks at strangers, wants to move, but is unable. He enjoyed a wheelchair for about four months, but now struggles to move it and frequently tips over because his front legs are now weakened.
