according to your steps, we are finishing stage 4 and starting into 5. Louie cannot walk any more, we pick him up and he falls immediately. His front arms seem strong but he just squirms on his pillow. there is no "right" time to let our pets go - we are at 2 years of incontinence and 6 months of urinary incontinence. I feel selfish but I just cant take much more

I have watched my beautiful s huskie struggle that now seems like he had D M . He lasted 13 years although his back legs were shaking since he was very young . Near the end of his life charging vegan wetting himself especially during the night and drank so much water day and night his pure white coat was stained with urine and he mostly vomited and Pooh’d often he couldn’t control his toilet . The urine he passed was incredible all his new beds after 1 day were soaked even with waterproof sheets . Then he just couldn’t get up his back leg looked paralysed then he was getting frustrated then he was crying out more often . On the 26 June 2024 I had to make the decision to get Charlie put to sleep on his bed at home with us all beside him and his pup who is now 8 and starting to show symptoms more now . I’m trying to figure out if I should get junior a brace on his hind legs ? Charlie was on yumove for a long time but in the end nothing helped him I also gave him paracetamol most days from the vet . Any advise to help his pup also male will be appreciated .

This sounds a lot like what my American Eskimo Dog went through, except he didn't drag his feet and wear on his knuckles. Everything else fits, except this came in waves, improved and got worse progressing gradually until the end. He was eating well right up until the night we put him to sleep. He was going outside with help of a sling. I heard him struggling. He couldn't get up and he was panting very hard. He was turning blue. He looked panicky. I took him to the emergency clinic where he was euthanized. He was nearly 14. Can this disease come and go while gradually getting worse like that? This is the closest description I've seen, but not exact, and I still don't know what his diagnosis was.

    • @erinblythe7497

@@ke2159 No it was not the first signs. Zac's first signs were back leg weakness, he was happy enough for over a year. The panting was in the end. That and pacing and then he would fall over. It progressed fast in the end. The vet said he had something wrong with his lungs and was due for xray on the Monday. We made the decision a week ago on Saturday to give him some peace and have him put to sleep. Couldn't put him through any more distress. He was a Huntaway/Lab cross so one of the breeds susceptible. Hope this helps.

She scoots her way around the house and is in very good spirits. It’s so hard because her mind and joy are there, she just cant walk. Recently we noticed she’s having trouble in her front right leg. It is rough, my gsd was put to sleep on 01/13/24. The hardest part is to see the soul in the failing body. It is the most heart wrenching thing to go thru on this planet, there is no human filter between you and your loved one. My GSD was fine living with stage 3 for 12 months, stage 1 and 2 onset 24 months ago. If your dog has DM walk him her as much as you can, buy a rear hip leg harness and carry him her. What ever you do don't try the new dog arthritis medication, liberal it will knock your dog down and stages 4,5,6 will happen in 8 days. I am waiting to join the class action law suit against the manufacture of this drug.

Thank you for elaborating on this disease in such awesome detail and breaking down the stages. I cant believe how fast this has progressed with our 14 year old Shih Tzu, Princess Maya Marie. To my disbelief, Maya was already in stage 3 when they diagnosed her but that was yesterday (Jan 4th 2024). Six days ago; Saturday Dec. 30th 2023 Princess Maya unexpectedly very suddenly started having issues walking and keeping balance. Also, Maya would fall over every time she did the "dry doggy shake" (like she's shaking off water.) I did not understand what stage our girl was but your video cleared that right up. Maya is at the fecal defecit stage so considering how fast this has progressed for her I do not think she is going to make it until monday when she sees the vet agian. Used ChatGPT with Video Insights plugin to generate this summary of this vid! Thanks! The video titled "MYOS Canine Muscle Formula® Product Review" by the Veterinary Teaching Academy, posted on December 10, 2021, provides an extensive review of the MYOS Canine Muscle Formula, a product designed to build muscle and prevent muscle loss in dogs through atrophy. The video, which is over an hour long, is not specifically about myosin muscle formula, but rather focuses on a commercial product for canine muscle building and health. Dr. John Waterhouse, the presenter, discusses his personal experience with the product and its variations, including the original formula, a veterinary strength version, a green-lipped mussel version, and a feline version. He explains how the product works, its effects on muscle building through the mTOR pathway, and its impact on reducing myostatin levels in the body, which can inhibit muscle growth. The supplement's main component is Fortetropin, a fertilized chicken egg yolk powder. Throughout the video, Dr. Waterhouse shares results from his three-and-a-half-month trial of the product with his own pets and patient pets. He emphasizes the importance of proper dosage, gradual introduction, and monitoring pets for changes in muscle mass, body condition, and overall health. He also discusses muscle scoring and body condition scoring as tools for assessing muscle health in pets. The video includes case studies and anecdotal evidence on the effectiveness of the MYOS Canine Muscle Formula in various scenarios, such as post-surgical recovery, geriatric dogs, and pets with muscle atrophy. Dr. Waterhouse also addresses questions about using the supplement in pets with cachexia or other diseases like kidney and liver disease. The video has been viewed 1,411 times, liked 26 times as of today.

I just figured out My 13 yr old Pomeranian has had this for about 2-3 yrs but her front paws would not always stand up straight. But that got better and I walked her a lot and she go up and down the steps OK. Until this year she developed very wobbly weak, hind legs and that’s what made me start looking online to see what could be the problem. Now I think she’s had stage to all year and it rapidly moved to stage three and four. Now she’s in continent. I’m gonna have to get her a little doggy wheelchair so she can get around. I didn’t know what was wrong with her because she would suddenly just plop to the floor and not be able to move and then I would hear her whimpering, but I don’t think she’s really in pain although I could be wrong. The thing to watch out for though is urinary infections because they lose control of their bladder. I’m not sure what to do because it looks like she still got labored breathing. Whenever I put my dogs to sleep in the past, I never could get over it. But when they just die in my arms, I feel peaceful with them. This is breaking my heart, and I almost don’t wanna work or leave the house.

I found that a good quality non-alcoholic LIONS MANE TINCTURE/EXTRACT has helped my dog with DM a lot too. (QUICK BACKGROUND) Dog is 16 and has DM for over a year now and BB is slow and struggle sometimes but overall she is still going strong she still walks and runs! She has a few accidents and sometimes stumbles over and I don't trust her on stairs but she is still happy and overall healthy I just wanted to let people know that because there is a lot of info out there saying they will only last a few months to a year and that is not true. I feed her as healthy as possible with fresh fruits and vegetables and meats but overall just focus on maintaining low fat and low protein (mosy dog food has wayyy too much of both plus it cab cause pancreatitis especially for my dog). (LIONS MANE RESULTS) This is a little-known supplement that has been shown effective in degenerative myelopathy and has no bad side effects. Just make sure you do your research and buy non-alcoholic!! I would say talk to your back because that's always recommended but not all that's know about this and my vet didn't even know that she had degenerative myelopathy so I had to figure that out on my own and did all this research on my own for hours and hours and hours. Anyway just in case someone else has a dog with this and doesn't know what to do and wants to help their dog it is worth trying in my opinion I noticed a difference the first day and it's not like she regressed back to a puppy but she started picking up her feet when she was walking. I couldn't believe it and I wasn't expecting it to really do much if anything at all, but t he at first day she improved! I don't think that she will continue into improve until the problem is gone or anything like that but I do think that it will keep it from getting worse as fast as it normally would. I'm also been giving her TURMERICwith her meals for a few years now and it just has amazing and countless health benefits for humans and animals.... YOU HAVE TO MIX IT WITH BLACK PEPPER (just a little bit...) in order for the body to be able to available and benefit from the curcumin. EVERYONE SHOULD DO THEIR OWN RESEARCH OBVIOUSLY, 😊 but this is what I came to on my own conclusion. The reason why I started using curcumin is because it's anti-inflammatory and it also could possibly fight off cancer and there are no negative side effects.... I noticed a slight difference but not a definite improvement however I think this overall helps her stay healthy and probably has enabled her to live as long as she has and maybe slowed the myelopathy as well. (Just what i believe from my research and experience) And while I'm at it 💁🏼‍♀️I might as well mention you should NOT use topical flea treatments on your animals either because it is basically what pest control companies use and they have to wear a special suit just to spray the stuff... It's that bad! It's a neurotoxin and it absorbs into your pet and it's got lots of bad side effects that if you KNEW .. YOu would not want! LEARN ABOUT IT!!! PLEASE!!! IT JUST TOOK ME A REALLY LONG TIME TO DO ALL THE RESEARCH AND I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE THE RESULTS FROM MY EXPERIMENT TO MAYBE SAVE PRIPLE MONEY AND TIME I ACTUALLY JUST FINISHED DOING AN EXPERIMENT ON ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS TO FIGURE OUT IF ESSENTIAL OILS WORK IF DIATOMACEOUS WORK IF NEEM OIL WORKS... I tested all of these things out with fleas in bags and the two that worked the best and killed all the fleas within a few MINUTES was #1: rose geranium essential oil # 2: cedarwood essential oil (All the other natural things didn't really do much....) And HOURS LATER.....FLEAS ARE STILL JUMPING AROUND IN THE BAG WITH 🙄FRONTLINE!! 👎 IT DID NOTHING! I THINK THEY LIKE PLAYING IN IT😂. ...NO JOKE. (Whoops I didn't mean to type in all capitals but I'm not going back to retype that last part sorry!)✌️😘🐶🐾

I am in stage 3 with my girl. Thank you for this video. My heart is just breaking, this is the worse disease to see her go through.

Is the down tail always present? My vet is certain Griffin has DM and everything else seems to fit the picture but his tail still goes up when he smells a fox or a squirrel.

This was really helpful. Our dog was doing a hike with us, slipped and fell of a rock, yelped and then was limping after. He can bear weight, but his shoulder muscles atrophied. He has pain perception and his elbow seems to operating correclty. It sound like from this video he has the unusual cranial avulsion injury. It took us a month to get him properly diagnosed (thought it was an orthopedic injury), and we are just starting PT with him. Can we hopefully expect a full recovery and how long might it take?

This isn’t totally true what he’s saying, DM is extremely hard to diagnose visually and a lot of the symptoms he’s talking about are commonly mistaken for other diseases. Be aware.

My 13 year old pit mix showed signs of this 6 months ago. She is not in any pain but at the onset I could tell she was confused as to why she couldn’t walk or control her rear legs. She is more accepting of it now and realizes she can run better than walk. (Her rear feet touch the ground at the same time and are only on the ground for seconds so no time to loose balance..YAY). Rear legs cross when walking and she drags knuckles and walks on the top of her rear feet. It breaks my heart. Thank you for this video!

What kind of supplements are good for muscle mass and gaining weight? I don’t have the money to take my dog to physical therapy and all these other treatments that you have discussed.

My dog seems to do better in the evening, as it’s normal
