If you go to the table to the left when you walk through the front gate, you can actually find a small stash of money from their supplies.

I tried storming fort Mercer and it was hard but if you played red dead for like 4 months and have ammo and good guns and tonics you will be good.
Get a sniper riffle and shoot them from the hills. Than come and finish of the rest
