She won an Oscar for this performance. Well deserved.
Most people who watch this and who have never slept in NYC apartments don’t get the joke of Vinny sleeping peacefully in the loud jail. Both sides of my family are New Yorkers (my parents were born, raised, and married in the city) and they laughed hysterically at that scene (particularly my parents, who, via the US Air Force, had later life experiences living by farmers’ fields after Manhattan and Brooklyn apartments). New Yorkers are used to sleeping to the sounds of riotous people/city noises at night, but not quiet, animals, and small town sounds (tends to freak them out until they get used to it). 😂 And Marissa Tomei definitely earned the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award she got for this movie (chef’s kiss performed right there).
My take on it is that the moment he starts to do well in court, when he starts feeling comfortable and the anxiety and worry of screwing up fades away, he gains enough confidence to sleep peacefully, regardless of the external environment.

I thought that joke was obvious. When I went back to finish my degree I got a cheap apartment BUT it was next to a fire station. When I graduated and moved to the country I had to sleep with the lights and tv on for years because I couldn't sleep without some typical noise.
I thought & still think it's peace of mind. He did so well the anxiety he was feeling went away
Great reaction...one thing that most folks do not realize is that before Lisa could realize why the Skylark could not have made the tire marks, Vinnie had to figure it out. The big reason why Lisa was crucial was because Vinnie could call her as a witness to give the technical testimony that he would not have been allowed to give for himself, since he was the lawyer.💯💯✌✌
The joke is when he sleeps in the jail it sounds like a normal night in Brooklyn. That's why he could sleep soundly.
Marisa Tomei won an Oscar for this role, she is amazing and this jump started her career.

New York has all noises through out the night. If you could sleep through that, you get used to it.

That was Austin Pendleton, a lovely actor (and acting teacher, too), with a long and varied resume. @@melenatorr I have read the actor really did have a stuttering problem so it was a reasonable portrayal.
This movie is actually shown in some law schools as a way to learn proper jurisprudence. It's even been recommended by the Connecticut Law Tribune as a must see for new lawyers. Gotta love a movie about "Yutes" being railroaded LOL
My Mum is very old fashioned and hates swearing but weirdly she just laughed at every F bomb in this movie because they were warranted and used perfectly

No reactors put 2 and 2 together that Vinny slept like a baby in jail because those sounds are far more familiar to him, being from NY. The sounds of the country and country living was foreign and disturbing, but the sounds of the jail were more like the big city, familiar and soothing. He could sleep through that.

One of my absolute favorite movies!
I slept on a main thorofare for ambulances and firetrucks so I totally got that scene where he fall asleep in the jail.. The noise of rioting was "white noise" soothing him to sleep.
I totally feel for vinny trying to sleep. When I moved out of NYC it took about a month or so to get used to hearing nothing. My heartbeat kept me up at night.

I always get the feeling the prosecutor was asking Mona Lisa about the timing on his project car. When I was young the timing was always a hot topic of discussion as all the guys were working on their old cars.
He also had a law degree from Harvard. He was tailor-made for this role. So glad he was in this!!
My friend went to see this movie. She told us she had seen My Cousin Vinny over the weekend. I asked her, so how is your cousin doing? She laughed. Its a movie. We all broke out in laughter.

Speaking as someone who is, not only from Alabama, but has also spent time in jail here, some towns have jails, others don't. They just have holding cells. Sending Vinnie to the county is not out of the ordinary. It is, however, unfortunate. I never had to do that. I spent two weeks in state in Tennessee for threatening suicide and it was horrible. The south throws you in prison for having a bad look on your face. The fact that he got out in less than 12 hours is the most unrealistic thing in this movie...outside of the fact that our owls don't screech and only our politicians talk like Foghorn Leghorn.
There are plenty of screech owls in Alabama. My grandmother who did taxidermy, stuffed one.

What I like about this movie, is that there is no bad guy. All the witnesses were hones, mistaken, but honest.
It's too bad there isn't any kind of an award for Austin Pendleton who played the public defender. That was a hilarious bit 🤣
I once lived in the city of Kyoto. On my way to work I would pass by a rundown area, fenced in, which often smelled very badly. I could not figure out what it was until one day I head a single "oink" from the place. It was a pig farm! And the quietest pigs ever, I think. I was shocked that they didn't sound like in this movie.
20:26 of course he’s sleeping through it. That’s what he’s used to. He’s from New York. That’s what it sounds like. That’s the joke.

the two boys on the square got their roles just because they were there. the film company saw them riding their bikes and asked them if they wanted to be in a movie
per sixth amendment of the US constitution you have the legal right to face your accuser , this includes being able to see all evidence used against you .
The car wasn't rusty it was muddy which which will be a running theme in the movie.
Actor Fred Gwynne was a classically trained stage actor who was also an accomplished painter , sculptor as well as author, however, whenever he appeared for a book signing or gallery opening, his fans from "The Munsters" TV show would visit and yelling from the crowd to do his infamous Herman Munster laugh. Gwynne was not amused by the disrespect as he believed he had moved on from this character.
You'd think I'd get tired of watching this movie, nope..

Northerners are called yankees down south, so it makes sense that the witnesses had nothing better to do than say what they thought they saw over some Yankee. Lol I always thought Vinnie slept well because it sounded like New York. Love your reactions.
I don't remember why, but there were sound albeit subjective, legal grounds for the judge to overrule Vinny's seemingly sound objection. I read it in some legal article. As I'm sure, some have commented, this movie is often referenced in law schools as a good example.
Two Yutes was not in the script. Fred Gwynn didn't understand Joe Pesci and they put it in after the take.
What always confused me about the “grits” scene is that Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei are Italian American, playing Italian American characters, and grits are just polenta, an Italian side dish, without parmesan cheese and chicken broth. Both are made with cornmeal. Vinny obviously knows this, and he obviously “has seen a grit before” because he asks a witness later if he likes it “regular, creamy or al dente.” You wouldn’t ask that if you didn’t know what polenta was, and it’s basically the same thing, just the Italian version. They look very similar on the plate, so this movie obviously wasn’t written by an Italian American. But minor quibble in an otherwise great movie. Marisa Tomei is fantastic and stands out among an all star cast.
As a person who grew up eating grits I didn't know what polenta was until I was an adult I never would have put them together and I asked a lot of questions until I understood the similarities. It is almost like the phrase " the same difference ".
I think his knowledge of grits came from him asking questions of the owner/cook every morning when they went to breakfast.
Yeah, the interrogation was ridiculous for obvious reasons but if they hadn't let the guy on the ship in "Alien" it would have also been a very short movie 😉

About Vinny finally getting sleep during a prison riot:
Vinny's from New York. He wasn't used to factory whistles, screaming pigs, trains shaking everything to shambles, or screech owls. But Vinny likely hears people fighting outside his New York apartment window all the time, so the prison riot had to have been like a comforting familiar lullaby.
What I really love about this film, aside from how satisfying it is that all the pieces come together, is that it's based on culture clash.
There's some suspiciousness on both sides due to belief in stereotypes, but it's mainly the miscommunication between members of differing cultures that sets up this comedy of errors. Some reactors voice their own biases, thinking the town is bigoted against Northerners or New Yorkers. They suggest the witnesses were giving false testimony, when clearly they spoke the truth as they believed it. The 3 witnesses caught sight of a similar car peel out from the murder scene, and they honestly mistook the 2nd car for the 1st one; and honest mistake. And I loved how Vinny treats the old black woman with thick glasses with such care and respect.
And loved watching you folks watching this film. I can't help but watch this film through to the end every time I chance upon it on TV, no matter how far into the story I come across its broadcast. It's just so well-done and satisfying to watch. Good choice!
I assume you are talking about Vega v Tekoh? That doesn’t rule that law enforcement are no longer required to read you your Miranda rights. The point at dispute wasn’t whether Tekoh’s un-Mirandized confession was admissible in court (it still wasn’t admissible), it was whether he could successfully sue the officer over it. It is a step back in accountability of arresting officers, but not in admissibility of evidence.

If you mean the film with Sean Nelson and Samuel L. Jackson, that one will break your heart! Such a fantastic film, but one I really can’t revisit since it is such a gut-punch. That final close-up is just burned on my brain.
Please oh please watch & react to: Noises Off. Its a fantastic comedy! Its an oldie but a goody. There are some well known actors in it too 🙏🙏🙏
