- Star Trek Online has announced details on the rewards for the upcoming Delete Alt Control event. Hearing that it was awarding an Epic Phoenix Prize Token was already a big surprise, but now they're telling us it's going to be reclaimable!?

I was thinking the same thing, I'm getting as many Bajoran Interceptors as I can.
As a long time player who has bought many things, the amount of Christmas gifts I already owned that were later gifted to everybody, not like I got compensation for that. You shouldn't be expecting compensation for an epic phoenix token you can't use. 😝
But who knows, maybe someone at Cryptic will be nice and put an extra thing in the Phoenix store specifically to let you turn these non-smeltable tokens into a special character bound set of upgrade tokens.
I feel like Embracer is having a fire sale. I'm half expecting 2 things to happen simultaneously: 1- a "going out of business" giveaway on pretty much anything they can code to give, and 2 - Oprah to show up declaring "You get a ship, You get a ship, etc"
You know, if they didn't want to make the token able to break down, they could easily add something to the epic level. Just add something like a character bound ultimate tech upgrade that binds the item to you.
I've never done the previous winter events to get the ships since you could only do the "fastest game on ice" to claim the ship. Now I can do my Breen themed ship. I'm guessing they wanted to unlock all of the Breen ships with them being the main villain in S5 of Discovery.
I hate that one. I do the ice fishing. Never had an issue with getting the ship
I'm extremely surprised, & if it holds true, extremely thankful to Cryptic for this Phoenix Epic Token offer. It doesn't address that the Phoenix Epic tier is mostly just really old ships, but overall this is a generous positive to the players. I'm okay that the shuttle pets are within a ship device. I'm a bit disappointed in the torpedo's description. lol I'm reading Stu1701's statement about Kael's "goofs" never this big as a challenge

Well hot damn... I guess all my characters will be able to get the Nandi. It's the only event ship I missed. 🥳 Not that any of them will probably ever use it but it's nice to know it's there if I want it.
I was kinda surprised at first that the Type 14 Shuttles weren't hangar pets, but I suppose it kind of makes sense - none of the Star Trek: Picard Starfleet ships in-game (not counting the ones that originated from STO, obviously) have a hangar slot, so having it as a distress beacon allows people to use it for theme-builds on the Sagan, Duderstadt, etc. without the need for new versions of the ships with that hangar slot.
I mean, it's not that weird that the Type 14s weren't normal hangar pets. I don't think they've ever given hangar pets out as an event prize. A distress call beacon makes more sense as an event prize because any ship can use it. That, and they've done it several times before. Though, it's been a while since we last saw one, last one was Beacon of Kahless.

That should give a lot of players a nice big upgrade. I've already got Cold-Hearted and Domino on every toon, but it sure would've been nice to save half a dozen epic pheonix prize tokens via a reclaimable one back when I was starting out.
Depending on the stats the Hypermass Torpedo may not even be useful for new characters for most people: the Prolonged Engagement Torpedo is its most likely competitor in that slot and most people should have that whole set on account unlock from the Phoenix Store. This torp needs an actual advantage against its counterpart to be useful and it does not sound like it has one.
It sounds like this is also an event where you can play through the mission on multiple toons on day 1 and then pick a toon each day for turn in for the reward credit?
Well i just unlocked all of this yesterday. and here is my quick review.
The epic token, is kind of nice. though not really necessary. it's better for newer player or ones who missed some of these unlicks. (like i did)
The torpedo is okay, but not great. The proc is 33% chance, and the drain may not be that great but the shield drain may be helpful for some builds. If you only have a spot for 1 torpedo then The Maelstrom's win this by far. Their base damage is over 1.5 time what this puts, out but their ability to store 3 charges is what makes them shine. (while I don't have the legendary to test the trifluoride hits way harder and for most ships will work better than this torp.) I think the big advantage of this is that it is a quantum torpedo. My torpedo boat has been equipped for rainbow torps for years, but with this I think I can finally focus on quantum only. which will give me a bit of a damage boost. Replacing my gravimetric torpedo which seems to be getting me killed more than helping as of late.
The beacon is actually quite good, but I think I need to clarify. Sure they may not hit all that hard, but they have 2-3 advantages.
1) They are a support beacon, so they can be used any time. This may seem obvious, but the cooldown on support beacons is 5 min, but they shared cooldown on support beacons is 2 min. What this means is that if you have a total of 3 beacons you can use a beacon like any other console, which is how I recommend using them. With 3 support beacons you can easily maintain keeping free support pets out 50% of the time. And since they have no cost to your build I highly recommend this.
2) like the nimbus fleet these are able to heal you, only rather than having one ship out of three, any of these can heal you. So they are like a decent team heal, at no cost since they take up inventory and not a console or device slot.
3) This one needs more testing, but like the phased-waveform beacon this summons a large number of small craft, and I believe they count towards your total number of pets. meaning I believe this will help buff consoles like the one from the Hydra. They also seem to receive buffs from anything that buffs pets, Such as the Ahwahnee abilities, or pet consoles.ee
It would be nice if they put more stuff in the epic level for those of us that have all the ships. Remind me, when they do the phoenix event thing do they still have a T6X upgrade token for 1 epic token? or is the lowest 1 for 5 ultra rare?
I wish they would add some other things to the epic section. I already have all the ships 😢
Yeah, it'd be nice if they added something to the Epic store for people who already have those ships, because as it is, that token is just going to sit there unused for me.
I see it as the Devs see a disparity between old and new players which this is a first step toward addressing it. The token RNG is so ridiculously skewed against new players that I suspect phoenix box demand has leveled off. Yes, putting new items in the box would be great but would only be a shorter term fix.
If they'd add a few new ships to the epic token store that would make it useful to everyone. I'm thinking something gold...
What a great way to offer newer players, older event ships, without breaking the token store, and still requiring an event completion to earn them.
I would just like to be able to equip any weapon as an inventory item to get its proc as a cosmetic, or have cosmetic slots for weapon hardpoints. Or make it function as a console with a 1 or 2 minute cooldown. Or allow in-battle quick swapping of weapons in your inventory for ships that don't have cloak/intel shenans the way certain ship types change flight modes. Give people ten slots for torps that can be in the ships hardpoint rotation at any time with 30 sec cooldowns if replaced.
Weapon cosmetics was something they wanted to do for a while, and the community wanted too, but CBS kept saying no. When they finally relented and said yes, Cryptic soon found out they could get it to work in the first place.
Feel like I may have influenced this one ten forward weekly I commented perhaps next year you can add epic Phoenix to the prize pic he did read my comment and said that is quite possible of a idea
I've been playing since 2018, and I've never once pulled a single epic phoenix token, so I am looking forward to this if only to see some of the ships that came out before I started playing

As far as I know, the token cannot be traded in for UR tokens, so if you can't get a ship, you don't really get anything out of this token unlock.

What?! This is how you do an event if you want to get people to play. Now they just need to add some new ships to the prize pack rather than putting them in Mudds.
They should have allowed the Epic Token to be broken down but still "bound to character". I'm the same as STU here, I already have all the ship in the Token on my main account.
Just binding the token to character wouldn't solve the problem (also, it probably already is character bound) because the Tech upgrades are account bound, so you'd still be able to just keep making new toons, guy tech upgrades, and repeat. Endless tech upgrades.
What I think they should do is add something to the Epic store that isn't an old event ship. It doesn't even have to be another ship, maybe a some T6-X tokens or something.
Make all ships account wide. Lots of games have account wide main items like that. Step up.
I forget exactly how many characters i have in STO, i do know that ive reclaimed that phenix token on half of them...
And its still sitting in the bank.

Because there arent any Phoenix box ships that i want. Id rather be able to conver them all into upgrade tokens. But thr deves saw fit to prevent that. Ao the useless tokens just sit in the bank of my characters.

Will the lobi crystals be single character lock thought?
Yeah, the Lobi crystals will be a single account pick up. Making them reclaimable per-character like the token would be crazy, it would just be giving players access to infinite Lobi.

I dont know if there's any level requirement, but yeah, once you complete the event you'll be able to claim an Epic Phoenix token on any character you have. The token will be bound to character, so you can't get multiple reclaimed tokens one character.

yeah, disappointing but not surprising. Like I said in the video, being able to break it down would effectively give people who finish this event an endless supply of free Phoenix Tech Upgrades, they'd just have to create a new toon, claim the Epic token, melt it down to Rares and buy the Phoenix Upgrade, which aren't character bound, so you could just move them to another character and keep repeating the process.

It's reclaimable on other characters, but specifically says it can only be used once on each character. So yeah, it's not an infinite supply of Epic tokens (obviously), but it means you'll be able to claim one on any character you have if you complete this event.

I wonder, as a percentage of the active player base, roughly what percentage of players do folks think have every event ship, currently in the pheonix store? I'd be shocked if it was close to double digits.
so maybe we can just smile, and be happy for the vast majority of players who will get something from the tokens, without any 'what about me' isms?
the addition of the token takes absolutely nothing away from those who dont need it, and gives absolutely nothing extra to those that can.

even when a particular reward, or event, is of no value to us, it always encourages an extra investment of time, and often resources, from those to whom it is, which in turn fills the queues, buffs overall player engagement, and fattens the playerbase, which is always good for us.

I think this is another case of "We didn't mean what we wrote." As usual, they reserve the right to not do anything they say that they would do. Don't count your epic tokens before they hatch.
