    And to answer your question about Pre filling the filter . Most people who fill them fill them wrong , you NEVER fill a filter from the large hole ( outlet ) but everyone does , it must be filled from the small holes ( inlet ) which most people don't, its perfectly fine to pre fil a filter as long as you do it correctly. So the CAT service manual says not to pre fil it for this reason

    • @rydermaxwell7780
      @rydermaxwell7780 Час назад

      Yeah but there really is no point in filling them as the Fass is fully capable of doing that work for you I always just turn on the pump and crack the fuel filter until it starts to leak a little bit then I fully tighten it down to bleed the air out of the system

  • @joethelen9897

    The filters always say not to prefill because most people fill them incorrectly through the middle. If you are going to prefill the filter, it needs to be filled through the outside holes to prevent unfiltered fuel or oil from getting to the engine. In most cases, it doesn't really matter, but that is the reason for the filters saying that

    I’m a cat technician and have been for almost 20 years. Caterpillar is extremely serous about their filters. It doesn’t matter if it’s engine oil, hydraulic oil, or fuel. Oh and by the way the engine oil is great too. You can compare the properties between CAT and Shell oil. Several of us up there run cat filters and oil on our Cummins powered trucks fuel/engine and have had no problems!

  • @saulthompson6613

    Liquids are typically incompressible. So if the filter is pre-filled (no air pocket left) then you may have trouble putting it on all the way correctly. Also some diesel (or oil) is bound to try to escape and that can dislodge the o-ring.

    I saw a master mechanic talk about never pre-filling fuel filters or oil filters because of contaminants that can enter the filter when you pre-fill whereas the fuel that is pumped into the filter once it is installed is filtered before it goes to the engine where is the prefilled fuel or oil is not filtered once you fill up the filter

    Eddie! You don't prefill fuel filters unless you are filling it through the small outer holes. The inner hole is your clean side. So if there is any particles they are going straight to your CP4! Better hope you didn't have any dirt on that fill nozzle on that transfer tank. Fass will cycle when you push your key and will bleed the system. Just cycle it a few times. Oil filters you prefill but the fuel injection system is WAY more sensitive to contaminates

    Semper Fi brother, did you ever find out why cat says not to use for fuel? I see there was a cat guy on here commenting but he didnt say.
    From one of fass videos their water fuel separator filter when water is introduced will eventually clog and if I heard right in the video from fass it will then not allow a bypass effectively possible saving an injection system from water intrusion. I wonder if thats why cat doesnt recommend using for fuel due to it not performing the same function as fass??

    The reason you do not fill the filters is because it’s a common rail engine. Very sensitive to debris in the fuel. Fuel poured into the opening in the filter gets sucked directly out without going through the filter media. The FASS pump will prime by cycling the ignition key. No need to risk pre filling the filters.

  • @204RED
    @204RED Год назад

    The reason you don't prefill is because the inside of the filter is where the clean fuel is sucked up and unless you can guarantee the cleanliness of the fuel you could be contaminating the fuel system

  • @21psd
    @21psd 2 года назад +2

    There really is no benefit to pre-filling the fuel filters since you're priming the fuel system correctly by cycling the ignition. As far as pre-filling oil filters, I do it and think its beneficial and perfectly safe as long as the oil is poured from a new/sealed container and not from some oil can that sits on top of a 50 gal drum in a shop. No telling what could have fallen into that oil can which will be introduce into the filter.

    • @rpsmith
      @rpsmith 2 года назад

      Well Ram/Cummins had some turbos go bad and the failure was traced to pre-filling the oil filter. Turns out a small piece of the aluminum foil seal on the oil container was accidently transferred to the center port of the filter and when the engine was started, it went directly to the turbo!

    • @21psd
      @21psd 2 года назад +1

      @@rpsmith that could definitely create problems, same as oil from a gun if there is debris on the nozzle. My brand oil doesn't have the foil seals, just the external crack ring on the cap which I make sure comes off the bottle before I pour.

  • @ColtonBlumhagen
    @ColtonBlumhagen Год назад +2

    Fass filters are a completely different design. They don't have a drain on the water separator because their design shows it's more effective at capturing water, and it showed that drain style filters drain more fuel and water stays in the filter.

    • @brucesheehe6305
      @brucesheehe6305 5 месяцев назад

      Yes indeed. 3001 is a prefilter on the suction side of the lift pump and 3002 is both a water and fuel filter on the pressure side of the lift pump. Always carry FASS spares with you. If you get bad fuel and the filters becomes clogged, your truck will stop running. They are designed this way.

  • @rpsmith
    @rpsmith 2 года назад +1

    You stuck the fuel nozzle down in the middle hole of you fuel filter. That is the output port of the filter. Small particles that would be very difficult to see without magnifications could have been transferred from the nozzle (your garage is not a clean room) directly to your CP4 and on to your injectors. You gain nothing and risk serious fuel pump/engine damage. For what? It make you fell better?

    I can speak for the cat filters because i work for caterpillar. They put that on the filters because if you fill it then you can introduce contamination into the fuel that will not be filtered before going to injection pump. Cat is very big on contamination control. It can happen and has happened before. Not saying it will but cat is very strict on this. Same goes for the hydraulic and engine oil.
