I used to go to this mall just for Musicland. Since that store closed, I can count how many times I've been to the mall on my fingers. Glad to see it's still vibrant. Will visit it soon, just because of this video.
My old stomping ground.i use to live on french island and in la Crosse went to Logan high and use to go to this mall every weekend sweet .thank you for all the malls in Wisconsin I been to in my childhood life. My time hanging here was between 91 to 94
+Gavin Proudfoot this is an interesting mall. It's like walking into the back of time. There's many stores closed yet it doesn't seem that it's completely dead or dying
@@UrbexAPeakInside Barnes & Noble, Ulta, Sephora/pennies and it's salon, torrid plus size! and the food court. Keep it going. B&N is like the library with coffee and gifts. Shoe warehouse... Yeah.... Clothes shopping... I am so poor I haven't bought but about 20 items of new clothes in 5 years. I thrift or trade. I chose to buy better shoes and bags though. And makeup. Or but a good haircut.
My grandparents used to own a baskin robins in this mall :) My dad and aunts all worked there and my moms and dad both have lots of storys abt this mall from the 80s
This was the mall of my childhood. My family would often get in the car on Friday night and make the trip from Sparta to La Crosse to eat at Chi Chi's or the Bonanza Steakhouse. Dad would hit up Sears for some tires, a chain saw, or a lawn mower and Mom would be up in the JCPennys shopping for whatever the fuck a modern 1980's married mother of two shopped for. Me and my brother would be like why fuck aren't we at showbiz pizza. oh the memories
Barnes and Noble is still here as well. What they should do is move Dicks' into one of the vacant Herburger's space I think that would help this mall a lot,
Yeha that place is turning into a dump bc now they took out bath and body works and ulta and those where ones that really brought a lot of people in because they made a new ulta in the old shop Co and bath and body works next to target in Wisconsin
I have been watching Dead Mall series from many RUclipsrs for the last two days. When I search this mall on RUclips my heart sank. I live in this area and I go to the mall often. I would hate to see the mall go after 30 plus years serving the La Crosse and the surrounding area. Now that Sean’s, Macy’s and Herberger’s are gone, I feel it’s only a matter of time. There was an article not too far back about giving the mall purpose. A lot of the ideas were to convert some empty spots into entertainment places or offices. I hope La Crosse can do something to help our mall stay here longer.
This mall is definitely still very busy. I live in the area and frequent it, they have lost two anchors with Bonton/Herbergers bankrupcy and Macys money trouble but still the mall is very much alive.
It amazes me that even La Crosse still has a Sears while Sears closed both locations they had in the Milwaukee area. They pulled out of the largest city in the state but yet kept almost everything else in Wisconsin sure that made a lot of sense. I wouldn't call this a dead mall either. Just becasue a mall has a few vacancies doesn't mean it's dead.
I live in LaCrosse Wi. I remember back in the early 90s we would skip school and come to the mall when it had a McDonalds and a arcade and we could actually smoke cigarettes in the commons area. It was a great place. It has since started dying and is currently for sale. Its such a shame that the most visited place in the LaCrosse area is dying. Like the city, it was once upon a time a excellent place. I enjoyed your video and i like the commentary. Great job!
One of my older brothers helped build this mall... it was always a great place to shop and hang out in the late 80s and early 90s... It's sad to see it like this... brick and mortar stores are going the way of the family farms. A sad commentary on our society.
Originally, the VVM had these lower rest areas in front of the major stores. You had to walk down short flights of steps to get to them. These were removed prior to the 1991 renovation.
I can remember these. Going over to La Crosse from Caledonia on Friday night used to be a big deal. Can still see in my mind the old McDonalds, Pet Store, and KB Toys from my childhood.
jc penneys is the only anchor store left out of, like, 5, and barnes & noble is just kinda there. it's sad, all my favorite stores in the past 10 years while i was growing up have died. it's sad seeing my childhood friend go down the tubes like this, but what can they do to fix it?
I was going to mention the sunken the rest areas but I see someone else already had. There have been a lot of changes to that mall since it opened. As a kid I loved the full sized McDonald's that used to be inside the mall. All the restaurants in the mall used to have their own seating Loosing Macy's had to have hurt them. The parent company of Herberger's is in serious financial trouble and Sears has been circling the drain for a decade. Without anchor stores malls like this are doomed
That's what happened in Fond du Lac, once Sears and JCP pulled out, foot traffic did too. Younkers, which is the same company as Herbergers is closing there too. Still a few stores and anchored by Staples and Kohls, new owners are planning on an overhaul project making it a lifestyle center.
Hey! I live here in La Cross and Onalaska! I went to this mall since growing up and yeah time flies after all these years. Would be weird watching this and spotted me in the crowd.

I know of one mall in Wisconsin that does uncharacteristically good. That being the Oak wood mall. If you want a depressing mall go to the Cedar mall in Ricelake.
Good video on this mall! And nice to see it's still doing well. I wonder how this mall will fill the Sears space, if(like I suspect) it closes down sometime in the next few years? I swept the floor in herBerger’s as it was built in 1980. Got to be there for the grand opening. It was a really exciting time. Seems that the mall was not able to keep up and is starting to die. Sad..The original floor tile was too rough for customers and it was replaced soon after the mall opened
