I started the episode off fully expecting to work on Little by Little, my 1979 Peterbilt project however while cleaning up the shop I realized I neglected to put in the metal sleeves in the lower control arms on the QA1 suspension upgrade I put in last week. Luckily it wasn’t too big of an issue to put them in to reset and since I was already working on BANONE I figured I’d go ahead and remove the back differential. Thank goodness for the Vevor jack, the wildfire lift, kroil penetrant and a lot of persistence…

When are you going to build the truck from smoking and the Bandit 2 the GMC general
@@bradlegg3025next project will either be a Buford police car or a General Lee 🤔
@bradlegg3025 do you know where those jimmy generals are hiding? Been trying to find at least one..maybe state side has a variety hiding in a barn or something..( I live in hawaii and only found two 😂).
The rear end shop will want to know what tire size you’re going to run to help with gear ratios recommendations for your engine/trans combo.
You have some great and generous fans👍👍
Mark himself is a very gracious man himself and shows his appreciation. He too did return the favor and I'll post that in the near future of what he gave me.
Cheers!
Earl
It's better to unbolt both front and rear shackles of the leaf springs while securely supporting the differential in place. It's easier to knock the leaf springs off of the center bolts once it's out. But you got it done! It was hard to watch you work that hard, you really earned that cold one.
Corey is subscriber of the year..stunning effort..incredible details..must have taken a few hours to complete..
LOL... too kind, thanks a lot
Cheers 🍻
Corey
Wow now we get too see a General Lee BUILD ! That’s going too be something the way Mark is with details ! Can’t wait ! These plate fun videos Mark get up the great work
Spell check really plate fun , get up 😠
Mistakes were made, except on the Smokey and the Bandit model!! Wow, that is impressive! Enjoying the series, Mark!
Yes Mark, it is a prorate sticker
"bingo" plate.
What an amazing job on that model! Mark, been following your channel sjnce almost the start. That Smokey and the Bandit truck gives me shivers! That movie got me wanting to be a truck driver. Be 24yrs jn July. Great builds! Great job too btw. Ya should be proud of your work! Everything is a learning curve.
Ya got a great channel!
I have a bit of catching up to do on your videos. I haven't watched the last three yet.
Came over to Ireland from England early March to help my sister find a new car, then our Mum (Mom) had a heart attack and ended up in Coronary Care. Then they discovered she'd also fractured a hip. And now she has a chest infection and is on on IV antibiotics. Still in hospital, she's been in since Easter Saturday, but she's still alive so far.
Promise I'll watch them all once the current stress is over.
Keep on trucking.
Hope she’s feeling better soon 👍
@@TwinStix, us too. Thank you.
I said before, keep the Corvette wheels as a set of 'winter wheels' and use the snowflakes for summer/show use. The snowflakes are a massive pain in the ass to clean/polish.
Put the sleeves on the car junior !😂
That’s how you know he’s not really a mechanic, if any kind.
that middle bolt is just a pin that holds the springs together and locates the rear end mark
As a model builder myself Im amazed they arrived in the condition they did, kudos to the builder. There are a few hundred hours in those models
Thanks a lot Doug. I've gotten a bunch of great comments since I posted the build. I made the display case and crate to ship. I tried to package it up the best I could but I think Canada Post gave it a couple kicks. I'm actually surprized the mirrors didn't come off!!
Cheers!
Earl
I work with the model builder, alot of time and thought was put into how to safely transport it as well
@@MattContant Thanks for the love there Buddy!!
Earl
That’s one great model and gift!!!! Enjoy your videos from rual central Fl.
Thanks for the love, it was fun to build!
Cheers!
Earl
MAN those are Awesome looking models he made!
Wooooooo 🤘....and little by little...lol..summer will come...hey twinsticks garage family ❤🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸❤️✝️❤️😎
I was the one who designed and 3d printed the reefer for Corey.
Corey sent me the link for your video.
Amazing work 👏
It was fun working with him to get it right.
Phil went above and beyond, picking out details that I didn’t even think about. As Mark says, He is a class act!
Cheers 🍻
Corey
I was going to say that I was surprised you didn't notice the slop in the bushings when you put the control arms on,
but then I remembered a couple things that I forgot in the past, and wondering how in the heck I didn't notice it
when I was doing it 😊
Mark, you bring an old saying to mind; "I do it *RIGHT* because I do it *TWICE!* " lol. Glad you found those parts! Had you not, you might have been downplaying the 'quality' of QA suspensions!!!!
What an INCREDIBLE model!!!!
Kudos to Cory! 🫡
Thanks Buddy, It was a lot of fun to build!!
Cheers!
Earl
Those “springs” on the shocks are just helpers. My 80 Camaro had the same on them when I first got the car, you don’t need them just run new shocks alone. Great video like always
Yeah people use to like the raked look back in the 80's and 90's. JC Whitney for the win.
Mark, and for the viewers. You misread part of my letter. I did not scratch-build the reefer unit. I think I said I didn't want to scratch-build it. I found Phillip Baker in London Ontario who 3D printed it. I'm not that talented as you think. Phil was the man. I believe he commented below, he does some awesome HO scale 3D printing. Phil did this reefer as a custom request. I show that in my 2nd posting of the trailer build. I am very humbled by all the comments on how well it turned out and I appreciate it very much!
Like every body else, we can't wait for your next weeks posting Mark!
Cheers🍻
Earl
As we used to say in the Army: Shit happens when you party naked! But don't feel bad, everyone who ever has done some wrench pulling has had some parts "left over", yours truly included. Annoying, but it is better to find out.
Cory built some beautiful models. Thumbs up!
What a great day in the shop! We all been there, we all make mistakes. It's admitting it and how you recover from it that matters. Glad you realized before the Mrs (or anyone else) was driving it down the highway or curvy road! And your fan Corey, what a great looking replica and tribute to your Smokey and Bandit tribute projects.
Thanks a lot Phil. First set of models I have built in over 15 years!!!
Cheers!
Earl
Ban 1 is coming along Mark keep it up bud also can't wait ti what u paint lbl she's gonna be sweet
If you don’t care much about gas mileage a 3.55:1 will be a happy medium for a none overdrive trans. If you go with an overdrive, 3.73:1 or a 3.90:1 will give you much better off the line acceleration. 3.07:1 sucks!!! I have an 08 Chrysler Aspen with the 5.7 Hemi and tow package that has the OEM 3.90:1 gear ratios and it gets going real quick. I test drove a new Durango with the tow and go package and a 5.7 and it was dreadfully anemic on acceleration with its tall gears 3.08:1 I think.
Gm choices would be 3.42 or 3.73
Mark, I'm trying to remember. But I am pretty sure that the gear ratio I liked was the 356 ratio. Because it has good take off power, high end performance without high RPM's, plus the gears are heavier duty than anything under. Great job man. Bottom's up.
Hi Mark
Greetings again from "Down Under"
I am loving the content, its my first order of business every Friday morning to catch up on the builds, and see your progress.
Your enthusiasm, even during rework, is awesome, and is a real credit to you.
One thing that I particularly enjoy is the background music, just love the instrumental country tunes.
Is it possible for you to list your music selections in the descriptions, as it would be terrific to get some of these for my own playlist. I'm sure there are others who would agree.
Thanks again for all you do on the channel.
Aussie Truckie
Pete
Mark, the video on the car restoration is great. I’m learning from your experiences. Mistakes will happen however at the end it will all come together. Thanks for the video and enjoy the cold draft beer!
Hey Mark, didn’t you say you read the instructions? Must have missed that bit eh? 😂😂😂. Either way, great content bloody love this channel! ❤
Reasonably, leaf springs aren’t too expensive. You should get new vs running those old rust straps. 😊
Oh I wouldn’t even use the old ones as pry bars 😂
Do you ever look back at videos you made before you had an impact wrench!, and now you have cranes, hydraulic lifts, pneumatic Jacks... what's next ??😅
Love the videos here in the UK
3:55 for a TH350 and you will be fine.
BTW Those rubber spacers around the leaf springs are anti-squeak pads.
When you were about to loosen the spring pack nut, I was thinking NOOOOO. But I guess it worked out for you.
There’s a company that makes a 4 bar bolt in kit that replaces the leaf units. With coilovers. They actually buil a full frame now to bolt in to the original unibody mounting and rear leak mounts. It’s an amazing unit.
Amazing Model~
Concerning differentials, what I learned while searching for the ideal traction adder for my Jeep is that if your Trans Am is gonna be a cruiser and your wife will drive it most of the time, then rebuild the stock Posi. For spirited driving for both twisties and straight lines, a Torsen-type torque-biasing diff, such as an Eaton True-Trac or a Quaife is the best, and for drag racing, go with a more rowdy lunchbox locker or a spool.
Yep! That's how I would have done it!
Twice and still missed a couple steps and had parts leftover.
back in the day my friend rebuilt his vw and had leftover parts and was so happy about it ;]
The bolts in the center of each leaf spring, are called center bolts, they keep the rear end from crab walking.
that totally sucks that it's cold and still snow on the ground while in south central wisconsin we have sunny with 55-70 degree and already cut my grass twice and farmers are in the fields planting.
Maybe look into a Gearvendor overdrive unit. They make overdrive units for various automatic and manuals that bolts to the existing transmission. I’m not sure what they run for price but it may be something to look into.
Thank you , you make Thursday the best
That's an awesome model..love it.
it was fun to build!!!
Cheers!
Earl
If you’re using old parts, make sure they’re good to go, but then put new bushings back in. I would put in new from a good suspension source. Year One.
Wow that model is beautiful! Great work!
Thanks a lot man, everybody are loving it!
Cheers, Earl
If you go with a th700 or 4L60, go with a 3.42 rear gear, 4L80, go 3.73. The 4L60 has a 3.06 low gear and with big block torque, it'll work great with the 3.42. I have a 76 c-15 gmc I swapped in a fuel injected LT-1 350 and 4L60E trans, the truck has 3.73's with 28" tall tires. It IS a burn out machine with this setup but, it's slow to gain speed. It revs to the moon but doesn't gain mph so when I can swap in a 3.42, it should gain mph faster at any given rpm. And a 3.42 should help calm the wheel spin down. And if you're running a big block, there will be plenty of wheel spin! 😅
Great model
Thanks Johnny, I really appreciate the comment!
Cheers!
Earl
3.73 + .69 OD (700R4) + 28" tires puts your rpms around 2100 @70mph. Very good imo. 3.55 will get you closer to the magical 2000rpm. BTW I love the Haynes Kelsey c3 slots on the T/A. Yea, I know that's incorrect lol just saying.
I replaced the original springs in my TA and went from3 to a 4 leaf pack. Nade a big difference on ride and stance of the car
If you have to go back to Leafs. Standens Spring in Calgary can make you new ones
"Daddy the top came off! No sh*t" lol 😂
I’d do 3.73 with a 700-r4 trans! Will make a sweet ride. Four link is the only way to go! Great video!!!
Those look like spring assist shocks from Monroe.
That really sucks, but from a handling AND safety standpoint, you caught it in time and provided a learning moment for people watching this, doing their own work.
You should see if wildfire has an additional scissor lift available to add to your setup, to get all 4 off the ground at the same time.
The modeller has an outstanding amount of OCD to make those models to that level of detail, matching yours. Well done!
And honestly, these are just good old fashioned techniques and building style. I barely scratch the surface as being called an experienced modeler. But nonetheless, I thank you for the great words!
Cheers!
Earl
You can turn tire full revolution count how many times drive shaft turns that will give you ratio.
Th 400 is what you should use with the new poncho motor. 355 gears would be a good gear.
400 turbo Trans and a 342 rear gear with a 4link rear suspension. Look at TRZ racing
Great video Mark!
I have a 1976 Malibu Classic that originally had a 305 engine with the turbo 350 transmission and a 2.56 open diff rear-end.
It now has a 1994 TBI 454 with the first gen electronic overdrive 4 speed (basically a 700R4 with electronics in it)
It runs a cruises fine with that 2.56 rear gear set up with the end result of a lower RPM fuel mileage wise
As for your choice for a transmission I would go with the overdrive (4 speed), 3.07 rear end would be fine but 3.73 would be better
A 3.62 would be just fine too for the in-between ratios of the two there
A better choice also is find a used rear end for cheap and those are everywhere and some have a posi setup in them.
Looks like it also had a drum to disc conversion done on it.
I dont see too many cars of that year with factory disc's on the rear
Those models of the car and truck are awesome to look at
my 1970 ford xl with a 429 3.25 gets 15 mpg, c6 transmission.
Hey Mark check out a "gear vendor". You can put it behind that 3 speed and it'll give overdrive and is rated for like 1200ft/lbs of torque
You should think about a torch setup
Have torches but bottles are empty lol
The leaf springs are bouncing, strap them to your lift on each side, then use yr jack on center of rear end to raise rear-end off of the springs.
It would be a nice display in the trailer with the merchandise on the things fans have sent you...when you travel to shows
Thought that was going to turn into the slack adjusters all over again😂
First. Dang nice model "Earl." Very nice. Second, Mark, a truck build is NEVER done. Never. Third, Wondered iffin you were gonna admit defeat and replace them springs. Yer adding horsepower, them ancient springs would have snapped on Mrs Twinsticks first all smoke burnout. Fourth, go with an updated transmission. Snowman will haul bass, don't wanna have to keep stopping to wait for her to catch up. And, the overdrive will be nice on the road. Besides, iffing she stomps on it hard enough, it'll do the double downshift, and pull smoke at road speed. Go with the 3.73's, and the locker you got now. Remember though, when pulling into the truck shows, she needs to be completely sideways and you ten feet off her bumper to make it look right. And still doing a solid 20 mph! Jakes a'screamin'! Another idea. BUild a false wall in the trailer, and stack Coors boxed to the roof. You can nail/glue/fasten the boxes (emptied) to th wall for safety when DOT/MT pull you aside. Well, maybe one or two loose ones for effect.
Thanks Jeep!!
Earl
3.73 posi with a 700R4 od transmission is probably what I'd do with a 500 hp monster under the hood.
Those models are sweet
Thank a lot Armando!
Cheers!, Earl
Sell that 10 bolt, and get a Moser, or Strange 12 Bolt, or 9" complete rear with disc brakes, and the 4-link coil-over conversion. My cousin just did this to a 69 Camaro. Get an overdrive trans and use a 3.55, or 3.70 gear. Any C-clip axle is junk. Leaf springs belong on 19th. century stagecoaches. LOL!
Great Job Twinsticks 👏
I like a 3:40 gear.
That's cool and beautiful
Y'all can have that snow up there I'm enjoying the 70 and 80 degree temperature weather down here in Virginia
Was just in Virginia last week - lovely state👌
that 10 bolt aint gonna live long behind the new engine, especially if the poncho is worked well, the 10 bolt can live but you gonna be throwing cash at it, i would look for a 12 bolt, or kick the cash for a complete drop in Strange 9 inch, call Calvert technologies for new mono leafs and a 4L80 trans with 373s.
Just drop the springs and diff all in 1. That was the centre bolt for the springs.
Mark, you are awesome buddy! Things you do for the safety of your family, your wife and kids will ride this vehicle, well done, and you've earned your beer
The rear shocks are for extra weight. A heavy duty rear shock would be better or if you going to tow a boat or bike trailer
Hey Mark not sure if you car has it, but I've seen guys find their build sheet underneath the backseat. I guess Pontiac put them under there as the cars came off the line! Just figured id share, Thanks for another great video!
3.07 if it's a direct 4 speed should be good. If it's an overdrive box, well, I think you might want to go to a slower rear end.
Throw that rear in the dump or sell to someone. Those C-clip, crush sleeve, 10 bolts are junk. Plus, it's probably bent. Buy an entire 12 bolt, or 9" from Moser, or Strange. If you use overdrive get a 3.55 gear. It's not cheap, but it won't wreck your car, or kill you. Great models!
3.73 rear, gear star trans with od, frame connector's and a 4 link,,,wilwood disk and rotors, ,,if your going to do it do it once.......your doin great that model is unreal
Thanks Eric, I had a lot of fun building it. I did the Case too
Cheers, Earl
A B&M TH400 with a gearbenders overdrive on 3.73 would get it done
brilliant MT, but i knew you were struggling with those spring hanger bolts, a right pain, now those models are a bit taste lucky you, m the UK
Leave the 308 gears if u keep the 3 speed
I had a monte ss the 350 w 3.42 gears it ran too many r's on freeway higher speed
The 308 u got are actually a great trade off
Hi Mark didn't you think to drop the rear springs it would of been so much easier to get the rear axle out, because you cut the centre bolt witch is a integral part of the rear springs if you had tacken the axle and springs out together you could of dismantled everything much easier on the ground or on your bench.
I prefer a challenge 😂
Current gearing built for an overdrive. Ment fir driveing not drag raceing. Don't believe the overload shocks are original but they were probly assisting soft leafs.
Hi Mark all the way from Yorkshire England why not put a 5 speed manual in it love the content keep it coming
This is the Mrs’ whip and she wants an auto … I’ll be putting a pistol grip 4 in my Charger 👍
@@TwinStix I understand Happy wife Happy life lol
Mark you like kid in a candy store
U might want to go to a 3.42 rear gear as a happy medium.
Ah Mark least u learn by your mistakes.wow that models amazing job.have you checked the smokey n bandit trailer since parked see if brakes OK.
I dewintered the Snowman trailer last week on Patreon 👀
Mark , it's your biggest nc fan reaching out to you with one word...Prevagen ! your age is catching up with you? Welcome to the CRS club?
I got your sticker thank you
summit racing and Jegs in the states have several kits
Well, anything worth doing is worth doing twice, right?
3.07:1 rear is a bit low for a high performance engine. I do not know what ratios are available for your 10-bolt GM, but with Fords in the 1970's, a 2.75 or 3.00 rear was for economy, 3.25 , 3.50 , and 3:70 were more for performance engine options. 3.25 is probably the best compromise between quick acceleration and highway economy.
Corey's assembled model kits were very well done. Better than any I have built.
Dump that 10 bolt. I'd go with a 12 bolt, or Ford 8.8. Easy to find at junkyards.
That gear oil doesn't look bad at all.The pinion is trashed.
id go with at least 3.73 gears mark
Kool❤
& nothing better than re- work & not a true truck building video 😮
Fun fact Robert Plant sings a song titled Little by Little. Ever heard it ?
Yeah not as good as the one by Oasis 👀
@@TwinStix Thx I'll give it a listen !
Have ever thought about running ethanol it
