    I’m still waiting for my adapter however it seems canon is showing you the equivalent f stop, rather than the actual opening of the lens. So while it was reading 2.8 for both tests, the lens was actually stopped down further on the C70 in order to give the amount of light and DOF you would be expecting without the speed booster.
    Theoretically the DOF and focal length should be much much closer if you simply had the same lens at their most wide open, and then count stops down from there.

      Thanks Jesse! My brain was breaking trying to figure out how the speedbooster could *increase* DOF with an equivalent f stop, focal length and distance from subject, but this explanation makes so much sense. I don't think showing equivalent f-stop is good practice...seems pretty confusing.

      Exactly. For a real 1-to-1 here, you have to have the C70 at 1 stop lower at all times. That's what the speedbooster does to begin with.

  • @avdcam
    @avdcam 3 года назад +7

    This is great Griffin! So I think what is happening with the speedbooster is effecting how the aperture values appear. One thing to note is the an F 0.9 setting on the C70 with the speedbooster is equivalent to the F 1.2 on the C500 Mark II. The numbers change because Canon (and Sony for that matter) felt that speedboosters should provide the equivalent aperture settings or put another way, show you that the speed boosters are converting the lens in use to a +1 stop version. So with the speedbooster combined with the 50mm F1.2 used on the C70 you get approximately a 50mm F0.85 Aperture lens (rounded to 0.9) on a crop sensor. I wish they would just adjust the aperture to read out the lenses in their full frame equivalent so you can match to other full frame cameras, but instead the apply the math accurately and read out the new calculated aperture factoring in the size of the sensor in use. So when you set the aperture to 0.9 on the 50mm on the C70 with the speedbooster you are setting the f1.2 50mm lens to the same wide open setting as you are when the 50mm is on the C500.

    I think the C70 with speedbooster gives you a reading of the aperture based on the compensation for the extra stop of light. Meaning F2.0 is not really F2 but it´s F2.8. You should do the same test with manual aperture to confirm this

  • @NoTicket
    @NoTicket 3 года назад +2

    Hey Griffin, great video. Depth of field is kind of fascinating isn’t it? The reason your lens matches at f/2 on the C70 and f/2.8 on the C500 II is because that is when your lens is stopped down to the same physical aperture size.
    The speed booster is simply compressing the image circle projected by the lens on to the sensor. At f/2.8 on the C500, the lens is stopped down to f/2.8 internally. If you took this same lens configuration and put it on the speed booster it would become f/2 due to the reduction in focal length. But the image is still the same. This means if you have a 50mm f/2.8 it becomes a 35mm f/2 (both of these keep the same 17.7mm physical aperture) but you end up with the same framing between the two cameras because of the smaller sensor on the C70.
    When you stop down to the same aperture of f/2.8 on both cameras you end up with a 50mm f/2.8 setting with a 17.7mm aperture on the C500, and a 35mm f/2.8 setting with a 12.5mm aperture on the C70 with speed booster. Smaller physical apertures = higher depth of field.
    So what you observed is absolutely correct! You have to open the aperture one additional stop to match depth of field (and light collection) with the speed booster. If you stop them down to the same aperture you’re eliminating the advantage of the speed booster. You should always use 1 stop wider aperture and 1 stop lower ISO setting when possible to achieve full frame equivalent noise and depth of field.

    Speed booster is a focal reducer. Wider focal length means deeper DOF. And of course the c500 has a shallower DOF it’s a full frame sensor and the c70 is super35. Just because you use a focal reducer doesn’t change your sensor size.

    You're comparing the same f-stop at two different sensor sizes so the DOF will always be different. The whole point of the speedbooster is that it makes any F-stop on the lens one stop faster. If you want to treat the camera+speedbooster as FF with an FF lens then you have to add 1 stop to the lens aperture readout. When you compare c70+sb f1.4 to c500ii f1.4, you're comparing the lens stopped down 1 stop on the c70 compared to the c500ii. Imagine that the lens image circle and projected image is constant and independent of the sensor, if you compare the lens stopped down 1 stop vs wide open, even if there is no camera connected, that image the lens projects will have 1 stop deeper depth of field.

    • @MrCoffis

    The speedbooster adds 1 stop of light and the camera compensates te number of the f stop for it so when it says 2.0 the it is actually 2.8 only one stop brighter. So that is why the depth of field matches when you open up 1 more f stop. But to really compare you have to set the fstop 1 step brighter since it’s actually the same. The extra stop of light is one off the benefits of a speedbooster.

    The depth of field of the C70 is bigger (less blurry) because the sensor is smaller.
    The more the sensor is small, the bigger the depth of field will be
    Example : using a gopro, EVERYTHING is in focus not only because of the wide lens, but mostly because the sensor is soo tiny

      Griffin Conway match the subject size in frame (back up when using the R adapter) and it won’t be. That’s why DOF gets shallower with a bigger sensor, you need to get closer to the subject to get the same magnification. If you have a 50mm on FF and a 50mm on m43 and you don’t move the camera or the subject the DOF will be the same. The same way that if you crop in photoshop your DOF isn’t changed. The framing will be crazy different and if you try to match the framing/subject size, that is when the DOF will change.

I have another brand on another camera, but the image is so soft at f1.8 that it is unusable, I even notice it at f2.4. Without my focal reducer my lens is super sharp and great even wide open f1.2. I would be very interested in a sharpness/optical degradation comparison between full frame and speedboosted c70. • @CarOnTheWall

    Great video. Thank you for sharing. I think the issue with the depth of field appears to be because the lens was wide open on the c500 and stopped down on the c70 to compensate for the added light from compressing the image on the speed booster so even though the image was close to the same exposure, the smaller aperture of the c70 was giving you a wider depth of field. Since the sensors are not the same size there is no perfect “apples to apples” comparison but if you want to compare bokeh you would want to make sure both lenses are wide open and adjust exposure through ISO or ND.

    F2 x 0.71 x 1.6 = f 2.272 full frame equivalent

    about your exposure differences, this is because you used camera to control aperture and the speedbooster compensate the "boosted" aperture. so it's not reflecting the real aperture of the lens
    if you use a manual lens, stuck on f2.8, you should have a close result with speedboosted c70 and C500, then see more blury DOF with booster than without

    Sorry man I’m sure someone else has commented this but you might want to do a little more research or ask someone who knows about speed boosters before making a whole video about it... the speed booster increases the amount of light the lens produces by one stop, the C70 is just converting this for you in the metadata so when your lens is opened to f2.8 it is giving you f2.0 amount of light. So to correctly match a full frame camera with a f2.8 lens like say a 24-70 f2.8 wide open you will need to set the c70 to f2 and the C500ii to f2.8. They’re both actually at the same aperture there but the c70 is compensating to let you know you’re getting an extra stop of light. Then they will match in depth of field. It’s because the speed booster doesn’t turn the c70 into a full frame. It just makes the lens attached faster. This is the case with all speed boosters. It has the effect of giving you a full frame look. If you want to match field of view and look on a super 35 camera with a full frame and you don’t have a speed booster, all you have to do is put a wider faster lens on the s35 camera. Say 50mm @2.8 on full frame and 35mm at 1.4 or f2 on the s35 and they will look nearly identical other than differences in characteristics from lens to lens. But the bokeh should be same

    Hey Griffin Thank you for doing this tests... Image looks really nice! My question is, if all settings are exactly the same, shouldn't the C70 with the speed booster be almost a stop brighter than the C500 MKII? I don't have any experience with speed booster, but I would have thought DOF would be the same at same aperture and distance to subject, so you would need an ND .3 filter to off set or near off set the image exposure or you could adjust down the ISO. This is how I would expect on a manual lens. Now I have another question, LOL. Is canon actually showing you in the menus .9 as the aperture? If so that could explain the difference in DOF from same aperture. Weird.

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  3 года назад +2

      I think canon makes the adjustment for you. To put it simply: if you open a 50 1.2 wide open on the c500 mark ii next to that very same lens on the c70 and open it wide open to .9, they will look the same but the c70 will be 1 stop brighter

    Focal reducers, or "speed-boosters" do gather more light for 1 to 2 f-stop for exposure, by compressing the image circle of a full frame lens into a smaller sensor, but they cannot cheat physics and create shallower depth of field on a smaller sensor than on a ff sensor or medium format... Only large apertures can do that, there are some f0.85 lenses around...

    I'm using the speedbooster on my Komodo, and it seems the aperture number still remains the same. Not really sure how Canon speedbooster works, but I think both cameras need firmware updates for this.
    Base on my experiences of using MB speedbooster for FS7 and Bmpcc4, the aperture will have 1 more stop faster and allows you to set the aperture at F2 while you use the F2.8 lens. So technically the speedbooster will not affect the DOF, and it only gives you a wider view and faster aperture. For example, 24mm F2 & speedbooster on S35 C70 will match up with the 24mm F2.8 on Full frame C500II, but 1 stop brighter.
