Hey there, it's been a while since I made this video and I have to say I now DISAGREE with what I said at 6:48. I think this video is still loaded with good information so I'm leaving it on the channel but my thinking on the last section has evolved. The extra shadow detail in Clog2 wasn't super apparent in these tests but is in some shooting scenarios. In short, I only shoot Clog2, I never never Clog3, unless a client specifically asks for it. Ya live and ya learn.
I own a C70 and shot in Wide DR until Canon 709 was released, and now I typically use that. I've found that the extra work involved with shooting log isn't usually worth it to me. However, I saw this video and saw the difference between Wide DR and both log profiles, so I'm considering giving Clog2 another chance. What is the easier way to shoot in Clog2, then get it to look like Canon 709? Which LUT should I apply?
Great video. I always shoot in clog2 because it opens the shadows a lot and it matches closer to what the Alexa looks like. Clog 3 looks clean but it smashes the dark gradients together. It is more visible in scenes with with deeper shadows.
Hey Griffin! Do you still prefer C-Log 2 even in really, really low light situations? I've seen some talk online about how you can get a little bit better of an image out of C-Log 3 when the situations are just out of your control lighting wise, or maybe you are shooting out on the street at night etc. Just curious what your thoughts are for extreme situations.
It doesn't open anything nor is it arri like. It's just that the clog3 cannot resolve detail past a certain point in the shadows, while the clog2 can. It's like how the vlog-l used to cap at IRE 80 instead of IRE 109. The only alexa like thing about this is the dynamic range
Hey I just purchased a C70 and I gotta say man, I love all your content. It's super relevant and helpful and it feels like you're making videos just for me lol. Keep making videos!
Nice stuff. Remember that Clog 2 wants to see 18% grey higher than clog 3. So technically you're supposed to raise your exposure about 1/3 stop to 1/2 stop over clog 3 exposure. When you do that, the highlight retention is about the same but the shadow detail goes way up. Edit - never mind, just finished the video where you dressed this.
This is great! For me, clog 2 really helps when shooting exteriors and I want to expose more for my highlights or the sun. Even the simplest need to slightly under expose the skin just to keep that sun in play more naturally. Since so much more data is in the shadows you can balance out the shot with much less clipped then when I used to shoot Sony, etc etc. It's pretty awesome all told/
This is an amazing video with so much information. Thanks to these clips, I have realized you are not Tyler Stalman. Thanks for making this for the community.
I bought an R6 recently and it packed in on the first wedding just before the bride entered the ceremony. Error 70 over and over again. It's gone back and I am hoping the replacement is reliable.
I guess I would argue with your logic that you are only going to be able to pull out the two stops of DR on CLog 2 if you "eff up your exposure." Hypothetically you could expose to the left to preserve highlight detail and pull detail that would otherwise be lost in CLog 3.
clog3 on c200 and c300mk2 was created to create more richer blacks and less noise. The DGO sensor essentially addresses this be eliminating all noise all together.
I havent been pleased at all with C-LOG 3 C.Gamut . I was hoping to replace my bmpcc6k with my canon to simplify my gear but it isnt gonna happen. I just love the raw way too much. Maybe a c70 is in my future.
Great video! I've had a great experience shooting c-log3 with my C70. I haven't really had a need to shoot clog2 yet, but I'm going to experiment with it soon. ✌
Hey! 2 years on I’m looking for a travel, RUclips, documentary video camera under $3k. The canon r8 is on my list due to canon color but Sony is really challenging. Panasonic and Fuji AF suck lol. How are you feeling about these colors etc today?
I just got Clog 3 into my R6 and I was super confused when I applied Canons LUT.. Clog 1 and Clog 3 looked identical! So I guess I always have to bring down some highlights with Clog 3 pre LUT .. right?
Cheers man. Just got my hands on the C70 with SB mounting Sigma Art 1.4 20mm. I’ve been editing on Vegas for years (it worked for me) but the C70 files just KILL it. Might have to get Da Vinci. Have you done any videos about working with C70 proxy files for editing? Great videos man!
Hey! Vegas Pro user here too! Use proxies on Vegas THEN for rendering use Voukoder. I'm not sure how recent of a Vegas version you've been using but they've come a long way! On Version 19 now, I'm able to edit 10 bit Raw and render 32 bit color levels no problem.
Yeah, the dynamic range is really. misleading. You'll always end up with a gross sun blob if you shoot into the sun. It's not going to look like film or Arri. Was this C-LOG 3 C.Gamut or BT.709? I used to love to shooting C-Log 2 BT.709, but for whatever reason this was removed from the C70 and C300 Mkii. You don't nee a LUT for C-LOG3 BT.709... You can just add contrast.
CLO2 has the most DR so I’d start there. When exposing I’d assume whatever is outside the windows isn’t too important for most real estate, so I wouldn’t be afraid of blowing out windows if you can’t keep it all.
regarding c200...bro do you know why my waveform stops data at the 80 mark on clog3 and in clog regular i can take the wave form up to 100 (i dont plan on doing this ever) but why does clog3 stop the data right at the 80 mark on the waveform monitor.
Hello..please help.. as when I shoot in Clog2 it has more noise than Clog3.. how can I tackle this if i want to to shoot in Clog2 coz when i see noise then i become hesitant to use clog2. Please guide
So I shot at a bright source with both clog2 and bt709 wide dr. clog2 retains all highlight detail at a max f5.6, and wide DR retains all highlight at a max f8. does this mean clog2 has *one stop* more in the highlights than bt 709 Wide DR? and, with in the same scene, shadows start to clip at f5.6 for clog2, but f8 for wide dr. I doubt this means wide dr has more DR in the shadows, but what could it mean? thanks
Haha, really cool comparison. Just laughing, because i much preferred the image from davinci that you called "too green"... i always disliked the overexagerrated Orange and Pink especially in Caucasian Skintones (esp. when slightly underexposed!) that Canon and Especially Panasonic tend towards... always like the Alexa or Sony Cinema-Look much more (that is more green)...Colour is subjective i guess... I would take the davinci image 10/10 Times over the canon LUT because of this... :)
@@SoundItOutFilms so basically clog 3 has better skin tones when you use rissolve, but otherwise if you jsut apply luts clog 2 is better since it has better DR in the shadows?
Hey love your content. I’m also located near Boston. I shoot on a R6 and would love to link up and work together even just to assist for experience if you’re interested. Great content keep up the great work!
You explanation about dynamic range isn’t true brother ... not coming here to shit on you but am only saying that for those who don’t know ... the dynamic range of that camera actually shifts based on your ISO and other things that are in play ... and clog is way better for a colorist ... but for low light shots where high lights are not really a thing, Then clog 3 is better especially for a quick turn around stuff ... again just saying but I might be wrong... lol .

Technically yes, but the DGO acts differently then "classic" sensor.

The transformer does the same (green tint). I thought I was crazy as I was the only one seeing an issue using the Resolve conversion.

The Canon Luts (for C70 and R5?)where updated.. maybe that's why DaVinci looked that different ?
Great vid mate, hey! where did you find the Clog2, Clog3 info on your vid at the 5 minute mark.
Nice work! Thanks! I was wondering about this. You dropped this video right on time lol.
On very low light shooting..

Clog 2 or 3… on c70& dzofilm pictor zoom lenses

I think this DGO sensor shows the capability of the CLog2&3. If you do same tests with R5/R5c results will not be impressive as this.
You deserve more subs... great channel, keep it up!
Thanks for all this great info. Also I noticed your theme music... is that from Little Green Apples?
maaaaaybe? it's from Storyblocks, super underrated music resource
Thanks for the info! Can you make a video of what’s the best settings you use for exporting c70 videos from davinci resolve? Thanks!

This is great and really helpful! Thank you!
So Clog2 has more dynamic range than Clog 3. What about Clog2 vs. RAW (or Prores RAW via external recorder)?
Raw isn’t a log curve, it captures more color but not more DR. Clog2 RAW is ultimate combo.
whats beter to shoot in low light scene, c log 2 or 3?
Only one ask. What the name of Canon LUT did you use in CLOG3 with BT.709 color space?
Thank you so much❤
