@@GriffinConway Comparing C200 raw with C70 raw, which one you think us absolute best? Not taking in consideration size, media etc. Purely on image quality?
Thank you so much, Griffin! At my job we have C70s and I've been running away from them in favor of the C500 Mii. I have even tried to use the FX3's other creative departments within our organization have because of the small form factor and low light performance. Been working with the Canon Raw Light (LT and ST) in the C70 for a year now, and there are some very clear color benefits over XF-AVC. As Connor shows in this video, colors are held much lower in the shadow. For example, I’ve mapped my C70 sensor and learned that when using XF-AVC, color (especially skin tones) shifts to a greyish tone when underexposed more than 3 2/3 stops. This is most obvious in more dramatic ratios such as moody interview setups. With C-Raw Light (LT/ST), this color is held all the way to -5 stops, and I can bring the underexposed image “back to life” if needed. Overall, I think it is generous for Canon to call this “RAW.” Yes, it provides several benefits similar to Raw, but overall, I just look at it as a 12-bit XF-AVC with some perks. My personal conclusion: If color and grading flexibility is priority, use C-Raw Light. If you’re not gonna push and pull the image in the grade, XF-AVC is great.
This update is better than we think. The fact we get raw on SD cards is so encouraging. I really can’t believe canon gave this update free. And when I recorded the ST raw it didn’t even blink on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Yes. It played exceptionally well on that little laptop. Far better than the raw coming from R5. If canon will put these raw formats in R5, then that’s a goodnight for rest of the competition. Still waiting to see what Blackmagic does. Great video Griffin
@@GriffinConway the raw meat s great! A little more DR but the gradients in mid-tones and Colors is much better! Can even be use grade further. I find it funny that many have posted reviews saying they can’t see a difference…

I'm an admin on the Canon XF705/605 Facebook page and there are so many of us incredibly frustrated with Canon who seemed to have deserted the 705 users especially. That camera which is from 2018 is so in need of a firmware update but even the 605 which is late 2021 could use codec updates. Your video will surely help us pressure Canon into doing more updates for all their pro cameras be it cinema or Camcorder. A lot of us are floating between the two. I'm close to finally making the decision on getting the C70 so are really digging your videos. Thanks from Martin in Australia.
Dude for whatever reason I hadn't visited your channel in quite a while and I ran into this video today. You have made gigantic progress as a filmmaker - your footage is absolute fire now! Congrats man you're doing great, best of luck.
Yeah man, how clean the shadows stay and how much color information is retained in them has definitely been the BIGGEST benefit I've seen with that DGO sensor in my C300iii. It's been literally game changing for how I shoot and am able to expose naturally lit situations. It took some getting used to because you definitely have to expose differently than you would with a standard sensor but it's an incredible sensor they've put into these cameras.

Thanks John Mark! I wouldn't recommend recording to the ninja personally, unless you are in resolve. I have one and never use it for recording. If you want a technical deep dive...check out Full levels vs video levels. The ninja pro res footage gets switched to video levels in premiere and makes it appear more contrasty compared to the internal log.
@@GriffinConway Good point, because I've started recording the Ninja V (ProRes LT) recently, and I did notice a more punchy image than the C70's monitor. The only reason why I started using the Ninja V is because of playback in FCP. The .MXF files seem to drop a bunch to a point where I had to make proxies. However, ProRes plays like butter. The two caveats, however, are the punchy Log image and storage. Have you had any problems with playback in Premiere with the raw files?
I have to say I am a little jealous and Hope Sony does the same with the FX3. Although Sony sux at making anything with LT option, they cannot even put medium Raw in their cameras like my old Canon 5Dr had which was awesome when you do NOT need full raw for photos
Super helpful, Griffin. Thank you for sharing these tests and breakdowns. I updated my C70 a few days ago and I'm stoked to see the results shooting RAW.
Thank you for this awesome test! Wow the recovery in test #3 blew me away- it definitely gives an almost ARRI quality look! Are you using a bloom filter on the shots?
insofar as I can tell, the Raw function basically makes this a fail-safe for quicker shooting. if a shooter has the space for the footage, seems like LT is the go-to format for this camera. What about frame rates? My guess is it stops at 30p, yeah?
I think the best thing about the Canon c70 raw video is that it can be recorded on a v60 sd card, the file size is very small and the raw video can be edited very smoothly in the editing software. The noise level is higher in this raw video, but when we really shoot raw video, we will definitely light the scene well before shooting raw video.

Hi, Griffin! It is a very nice update for me, too. Could you do a small video, how to make color grading in with the RAW LT, please? Thanks in advance! and stay safe
Griffin. I updated the C70, and is it just me or is the Raw codec MUCH sharper than either HEVC or XAVC. I have tested it in so many ways, and that C70 softness is gone in the Raw codec. I mean, it is very very sharp now. Is it just me, or are you seeing the same thing?
What a terrific rundown of the firmware update. For around a year, we’ve been running the c70 and the BMPCC6K together on documentary shoots here in Atlanta. The BRAW is wonderful in post (even on older machines). On a commercial project this week with the c70, I had to transcode a couple of XF-AVC clips for them to export without dropped frames. It was very strange, but when transcoded to ProRes, there was no problem. Premiere exported the non-transcoded clip with a black few frames between clips. Again, this was totally new to me., but Premiere did alert to the exact frames that were the problem which helped So, my question is how does the LT Raw handle in post? I’m currently cutting on a M1Pro laptop, but the wife is still cutting on our old 2014 iMacs (supped up ones), for proxy assembly. Thanks, and your channel has been a big help to us.
Thank you! I edit mostly on a 2019 MacBook Pro for now, so I like making proxies for everything so it will edit smoothly. I have a new M1 maxed out laptop on order that will probably handle everything much better. I had the 6k pro and loved how well the raw edited. The c70 raw doesn’t edit as smoothly as that did for me. It can record proxies at the same time as recording raw, so that’s a nice option
@@GriffinConway Thanks! I’m going to update the firmware this week and do some tests. Funny how no matter how good your computer is, proxy editing is still necessary. One of the worst codecs I’ve dealt with was drone footage from a DJI. Get that away from my computer at all costs. Keep up the good work!
Another great review, The c70 is Nightmare for C300 Mark3 owners LMAO!!! I"m pleasantly surprised with the update as the 12bit Raw Light gives me more space on the card than 10bit XF-AVC

Haven't really every used it before and would love a pointer or two if you get a chance. Thanks again bro!
Hi Griffin, I've been using your Midnight LUT recently, and having fun with the C70. One thing I'm not clear on is if the NinjaV has been updated yet to take the RAW from the C70. I've seen varying accounts online. Do you use the Ninja? Do you happen to know? Anyway, love the channel.

Amazing results! Can't wait for the firmware to drop. Would you say that the C70 image gets a little bit sharper than it's original somewhat soft image prior to the new firmware?
Griffin can you do a video on the C70 internal recordings and codecs vs using the Atomos ninja v. I don't know if I should use my ninja with the C70 or not which will be best configuration to use?
Awesome video mate, thanks for sharing. I'd be really interested to see file size comparison between XF-AVC, Raw LT and Raw ST! Can't wait for the update to land for us normies :D ha!
It comes out today! At :42 it shows how much footage goes on each card. I didn’t list it but in XF-AVC all-I gets 39minutes/128gb card and long gop gets 140 minutes/128gb card
Great video! When I watched this video in 4k I could see the differences in the underexposed shots for sure but I didn't really notice any difference in the overexposed shots from XFAVC to RAW, did you see a difference? I'd like to shoot in RAW all the time but storage space can be an issue on long shoots so I'm trying to choose the right times to use it. Thanks for your videos!
Nice video. I’m looking forward to trying the new firmware out. Do you tend to work with the CRM files directly or transcode to ProRes (same with the C200 etc)? Thanks.

Griffin. I updated the C70, and is it just me or is the Raw codec MUCH sharper than either HEVC or XAVC. I have tested it in so many ways, and that C70 softness is gone in the Raw codec. I mean, it is very very sharp now. Is it just me, or are you seeing the same thing?
This idea might be completely wrong, but could it be something to do with cleaner blacks --> more contrasty look --> more perceived sharpness?
Thanks bro! Just updated mine and I'm ready to go!
I saw last night in the groups! So dope bro, you always crush it. Would love to hear your thoughts. We need your return on RUclips!

Another great review, The c70 is Nightmare for C300 Mark3 owners LMAO!!! I"m pleasantly surprised with the update as the 12bit Raw Light gives me more space on the card than 10bit XF-AVC
Great stuff, now can you do a video to explain how to load your Lut's to the C70.
Planning to email blast everyone who bought the luts with a step by step update!
@@GriffinConway Amazing!..thanks, I'l keep a eye out.

Will you be doing an R5C / C70 comparison video?
Great Job with the test! Do you think this would come to C500 mark ii as well? thx
I sure hope so! I have the c500 mark ii and I love the raw but he files are huge so it makes it hard to deal with.
Thanks Griffin, a really helpful review - I'm downloading now... very excited.
Awesome Alvin! Let me know what you think of it
I love the lamp in the background. May I ask where you got it from? I've got so much stuff on my desk that I would love something that can hang over my desk like that.

Great video - question, did you shoot in Clog 2 for the XF-AVC?
Hey Griffin, a request -- when you do these sorts of tests, could you also mention which lenses you're using? I mean, if you don't mind sharing that info.
Thanks for putting out awesome content!
For sure. Usually I do, but since it was only one camera used for the test with one lens I didn’t mention it. It was the canon 24-70 2.8 ii
Thanks so much for doing this! I’m curious which program you are using to grade ?
would love to see the comparison to the raw in the r3! :)
Coming soon!
Griffin! Love the channel man...appreciate the time and effort you put into getting info out to us! when you are shooting in RAW and CLog2, what sort of workflow do you do for grading? you mentioned noise reduction...is that something you do in resolve? Haven't really every used it before and would love a pointer or two if you get a chance. Thanks again bro!
Thank you buddy you really saved me some time tweaking around my updated C70 ;)
Great to see new content : ) C70 image is just so nice
Agreed! Thanks for watching
Always good to watch your videos bro - soooo... appreciate your laid back approach bro - I'm about to install the update in my 2 x c70's so its great to watch your video and get a handle on what your thoughts are Griffin - keep up the awesome work mate. All the best from the land downunder :)
Thank you, alway like your video. Now I am going to go and update my C70
Griffin thanks for the video. Do you know why the IS doesnt work with the RAW Codec? Doesnt make sense for me.
Amazing results! Can't wait for the firmware to drop. Would you say that the C70 image gets a little bit sharper than it's original somewhat soft image prior to the new firmware?
If anything the image will looks softer...
New firmware is out already
@@sudzert Thanks. I just found it on the Canon UK site. Still not posted to Canon USA, so didn't even know!
I don’t think it gets sharper but the colors look a lot richer to me

Brilliant stuff as usual!
@@GriffinConway Dude, thank you! I'm hitting up that Canon website right now!! My client work can wait, I need to head out and test :D
Stuck between the c70 and c300 mkIII, is it worth it to spend $5000 more?
C500 Mark II and C70 still a good A and B cam to purchase in 2022?
Any chance of you doing a c70 vs R5c comparison? About to pull the trigger on one of them but super torn about which one.
Yes I plan to do one. I spoke to canon and they said they could send one out for me. Not sure exactly when I will get it but I will post soon as I do
Amazing camera. how can i get CG LUTS for C70. i can not purchase from your link because i am from india. please send me reply how can buy it easy
Thanks.
Great results, thx G!
Thank you!
