My suggestion would be to call HD customer service and see if they are willing to hear your issue and / or reach out to the factory engineering dept. HD needs to put out a TSB and have the dealers make the needed adjustment or repair to prevent this from happening. Someone will be seriously injured or possibly killed if this is not addressed. Excellent reporting on your part!! Glad you were not injured or your bike damaged.
They’ll probably watch this and reach out since he’s got a following.
Thanks. I hope that a future update disables the engine shut off logic. I truly don't like that idea under any circumstance. I cannot think of a single instance where that is a good idea
@@RidingandWrenching Agree. If enough people complain to the Motor Company then hopefully a solution will be initiated.
Also agree and this should be an option to disable at least at the dealership. I applaud Harley for finally putting this feature in their tour bikes but not at the risk of getting hurt if it fails. I would rather just have the dummy light to say kickstand is down.
I know on my Ultra I had them turn off the feature that turns off my auxiliary lights when I switch on my high beams, they just did this in software using their digital tech computer. Wondering if they can do the same with the kickstand down feature just have the warning but not to shut off the bike?
@@worldofzap I hope IF other guys have the issue, they come forward. It's not EZ for some to say they dumped a bike.
heck i'd super glued that washer to the magnet asap!!
Lol
Excellent informative video Cue!!
Welcome to all the electrical issues you will have now that Harley has introduced more electronics into their new platform. Indian has had these same weird electronic failures for years and the response from the dealer is a constant CRICKETS! Good Luck....
No crickets. Just read the manual.
Glad to hear you were not injured. By the way I enjoy all of your videos.
Thank you!
I had a similar issue recently but not with the kickstand. It just turned off while I was going 70 MPH. This is why having all the computer interface is not progress. One thing I learned you can reset the electronics by turning the bike on let it go through the start up and then turn off. Do this again 5 to 6 times and it resets the electronics. Also make sure that when you take your bike in for service that they make sure to download any and all updates for the bike software. I had 2 missing updates and they would have prevented my issue. Ride safe my friend
Sometimes your will have to pull the main fuse to reset the electronics.
I'm glad you didn't injure yourself or damage the bike. Maybe give Robert Simmons a call and ask him to test that theory out the lean angle theory.
Being a brand new bike and having an intermittent electrical problem can be very frustrating especially when the technician cannot recreate the problem. If the problem reoccurs I would suggest that the electrical circuit from the module to the sensor be checked and tested for a loose connection anywhere in the circuit, a pulled out terminal that did not get locked into the connector or a terminal end incorrectly installed to the conductor. The chances of foreign debris would be very high and in my opinion this fault will reappear because it has yet to be detected and fully investigated
Your dropguards were a very good investment. You saved a lot of money by not dropping the bike. EU bikes have this kick side switch since 2014. No issues. And the US police bikes have this switch too. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
I think your washer hack will be the new in-thing for 2023 CVO owners! Cutting the power sounds like an accident to happen and a future recall. I enjoy your videos. Cheers
Very experienced riders told me to put saddle bag guards on my SGS because it costs a lot to repair/repaint the bags and it helps to lift the bike up. They said it can happen to anyone. They were correct.
Glad you are safe brother
Sorry to hear that Q. Glad your ok 👍
Thanks! Good info. Sounds like a good thing just to permanently disable with a washer glued to the switch
Thanks for sharing this info, very helpful. Keep the videos coming!
Need to make a little cap, and leave it over it.
Thanks for the info. Something to keep an eye out for
I think instead of interrupting the operation at the START of the kickstand motion it would be better at the end (kickstand down position) of the motion…and a button rather than a magnet. But hey I’m no engineer lol. Good video, glad you weren’t injured.
Does the Indian have a feature like this? Does it shut the bike off if you put the kickstand down?
@@RidingandWrenching Yes.
Glad you are ok.
Glad all is well shipmate!
That's a major issue for Harley Davidson. That will kill someone.
Glad you ok🙏🏿
Glad you're OK!
This is good to know,i haven’t had this issue as of yet with my bike, but now thanks to u i know what to do and not to do!!💪🏼💪🏼
You're very correct that is dangerous! To think a little washer interferes with the system.
Wow! 😮 Good info & glad you’re okay & made it home safely! Hope you had fun with the fam!
Very interesting, well done in finding out about the magnet
New subscriber!!! Great video! Informative, and you provided some brilliant points! Ride safe!
Great video Q , Glad to hear that You and the Bike are Ok. Keep Riding and Wrenching.
I’m glad you are alright take care sir
Only appreciate you making this video some good information that everybody needs to know and be aware of. Thanks for the great content
Thanks for sharing! BIG shout out to Tim from @RidgeLife for bringing me here!
You know the answer: buy a metric bike that doesn’t have HD problems, and costs a lot less. I use the kickstand to turn my bike off when I stop on my Suzuki. Never had a problem with Japanese or Italian kickstand switches.
I'm glad u figured it out like u said this could be very unsafe great update on the kickstand switch
Great points about a potentially dangerous future issue with the sensor activating and shutting the engine shut off. Thanks for sharing
Glad your okay! And didn’t damage anything, Great research and display, thank you for the updates, God Bless Be Safe!
Good video and I agree with your opinion; do NOT turn my engine off!
I would tape that washer to the switch.
New sub here too 😀
Damn brother, thats a beautiful bike, glad your not injured and its not damaged.
Thankfully you and the bike came out great. It seems to me that you created your own solution to the problem, just need to attach the washer to the bike. Good informative video. Grace and peace!
I’m glad your bike and more importantly you are all okay!
absolutely! I don't worry about dropping my bike....it happens. Nothing to be afraid of and nothing to be ashamed of
Agreed! 100% thanks for sharing
Great info for fellow owners. Nice of you to quickly let us know for safety reasons. When the kickstand is up: is the switch normally closed or normally open?
Thanks for the motorcyclesropguards knowledge. Just bought em!!
That's awesome! You're going to love them!
On my old Suzuki I had to use bailing wire to put a nut on my kickstand to ensure the kickstand made contact with the safety switch. If not hitting a bump would make the stand lose contact and the bike would shut off. Thanks for sharing your experience with the community
Good information thanks.
If they have to do this, interlocking the starter relay is the way to go(not ignition), along with a warning light or display feature. I'm with you, less chance of being stranded or stall out in slow speed wins confidence from riders. Glad you are ok and good going on the guards.
Drop guards worked like a charm! I hope that Harley (and any other mfg) changes the logic....never turn the motor off when the bike is moving
@@RidingandWrenchingwhere did you get the drop guard from I already have the bars for my engine and saddle bags
@@newmoney8128 motorcycledropguards.com/
Yes, you can enable/disable that function over program with the scanner connected to the bike
Very interesting ! Thanks for sharing this (scary) experience and glad nothing too bad happened to you ! I hope HD can hear this kind of experience and update/upgrade the bike accordingly... Let us know if you get any update from them after this video.
Keep it up 👍
(From a french viewer in France)
I hope that Harley considers changing the logic of the kickstand logic. I don't like the idea of stopping the motor while the bike is moving
Excellent and very informative video, thank you sir, enjoy the vvt
Thanks for sharing! I have a 2023 Indian Chieftain with the same side stand feature, so this is good info to know. Ride safe, friend.
The Chieftain will be on my short list for my next bike....along with the Street Glide and that thing from BMW that looks like a Street Glide
Very informative… thank you for sharing and your videos :-)
Great video and that mustang is pretty slick.
I wonder if hitting a bump could have allowed the stand to move some on its own or maybe when you put the stand up it may not have went all the way up. Anyway, glad you didn't get hurt. This system is new for Harley and unfortunately their validation process is usually done by their end customers, fixed later on future model years, and offered as an upgrade at a cost for those who were the early adopters and had issues. Harley isn't afraid to Mickey Mouse new to them features. Reverse on the trikes is a clear example of that.
Notorious issue on KLR650 that has lead to people being stranded in remote areas as the failed switch won’t allow the bike to start.
Hopefully HD will figure out what the problem is Glad you're loving your new bike. Stay safe out there✌🏾
The new bike is awesome! I have some more content coming out this week featuring the new bike
Might have given the world an idea on a kickstand delete option.....I for one would definitely buy something like that!
Glad you & the bike are both ok. Sometimes in the effort to give you safety features that you really don’t need (and raise the price) the engineers find a way to make it less safe.
Exactly. I can't think of a scenario where killing the motor to a moving motorcycle is a good idea....I can think of several reasons why it is a bad idea
I had that feature on the Pan America I owned for 2 weeks 😂 Absolutely hated it. After your explanation, that is really dangerous. Glad to see you came up with some type of work around.
Sounds like you were in a good spot for a so called u-turn fail that really wasn’t. Somebody else might not be. Good video
Glad to hear you were not hurt. That feature really sucks actually. My current Harley does not have that feature. Is this something they are only putting on CVO?
We don’t know each other, but I’m glad you were not hurt in that intermittent switch caused incident Brother!
This issue is easily resolved by changing the logic of the kick stand interrupt. Rule #1....never shut off the motor when the bike is moving. Arguably, you should never shut off the motor unless the wheels aren't on the ground. Otherwise, leave the decision to the rider
Take it in and see if it threw any codes ? Tell them exactly what happened it could be a faulty sensor ? . This is why I absolutely refuse to be anyone’s first year model Testing Guinea pig for any manufacturer. Glad you didn’t get hurt !
That’s dangerous and I agree with you. Hopefully it’s a software fix or a quick part swap.
Thank you for the IMPORTANT information...... You might try starting the bike with the kick stand up and lean it over 25-30 degrees and see if the kickstand is held firmly in place. The return spring might not fully secure the KS arm and it might bounce against the frame and break the magnetic contact.. If so a stronger return spring might be the answer.. Or maybe a better alignment of the sensor to the KS leg..... Moral of the story... keep a washer in your pocket for backup.
You just made up my mind about purchasing a new CVO…..I think I’ll pass….and keep my “old” 2018 CVO…..
I wouldn't let this issue be the deciding factor. There is so much to like about this bike
Good point! Period! That motor is your life.
I'm really glad you you brought this up. There are a ton of traffic circles in my area, they're mostly 2-lane, and the drivers DO NOT know how to go through them. Also, a lot of big trucks. If I buy this bike, and the engine cuts on a traffic circle, that'll be it. I'll roll up under the truck behind me or to my side, and a ghost rider I shall be. I really hope that Harley fixes this.
I think they will get a fix. The key thing to know....if you get that warning message, don't lean the bike....and move to the side of the road as quickly as possible.
Important info. Thx for putting it out there. Needs to be addressed IMO
The bike is looking good with the TourPack on it… Have been scouting around for the same bike and dealers are really proud of it, with an MSRP of $42,999 plus freight, it is super proud to ask for between $52,999 and $54,999 even was told that someone was asking $60K for the Platinum Paint bike. Can you imagine what they want for the Whiskey Neat version?
That’s terrible bro. Glad you didn’t get injured. A simple pressure switch tied to the ignition would have been fine in my opinion. That way the ignition is only interrupted when the kickstand is down and something would have to apply pressure really strong to inadvertently hit it while moving which would probably never happen. That feature is for rookies anyway. Put computer controlled suspension on the bike instead of a stupid kickstand down switch.
I’ve ridden with my kickstand down before, and the road kicks it back up while riding.
That definitely sucks and glad it happened under "safe" conditions. But it should be checked out further. Maybe having Harley install a new magnetic sensor for it.
2- weeks later-
I would disconnect that switch, similar to the seat switch on a rider mower. 😊
Liking my old Road Glide more and more
Hello from your old neighbor, crazy I stumbled across your channel looking at Harley videos
I recognized your Mustang
Hey there Randy!! Great to hear from you. I hope your family is doing well!
Everyone is doing great, hope your family is doing good as well. We sold our house in March and moved to Arizona, keep the videos coming I really enjoy them.
Glad you’re ok. Good Ol Harley Gremlins. Personally I never by ANYTHING first “new” production model. I’m so glad you’re ok brother 🙏🏾
Totally agree with you! Dangerous feature ? Sound like an easy fix with software.
I totally agree - thats something i would have to figure out how to disable or remove the sensor. I would say that is an over-engineered feature and I would have to remove it.
I have an OBD2 scanner for my truck and I think they have them for motorcycles too. There should be a spot on the bike where you’d plug in the scanner. They’re not very expensive and could be worth the investment.
Wow that’s really interesting
I agree. Don't automatically turn my engine off. Respect to the Navy. I was Air Force. Is that a 66 Stang? Side looks like my 66. Love that color!
Great instructional video, Harley should contact you being that you are a content creator, engineer and an actual cvo owner..! I look forward to your future content.
You bike turned off!!!!! Jeez, I wonder what in the world caused that. Love the drop guards all around. Glad you and your ride are good.
You can disable the sensor by cutting the wire to the sensor and tie the wires together on the sensor side. The computer will always think the stand is down. Good luck. I ride.
Great review. I bet there will be a software update by the time you go for your 5k check up and this issue will be resolved.
Great info. Did you bring this to HD's attention? Because that would be a major concern.
About time to check or replace that faulty sensor, because that error will come back in future, and then someone gets hurt.
Maybe your kickstand is vibrating off the magnet when you hit a bump on the road? Maybe moving the sensor further up if possible, will probably fix the problem.
Glad you’re ok. Makes me appreciate my “primitive” 2002 Fatboy a little more.
The big four Japanese bikes do this exact thing. For years. 120 years to figure it out and they have no clue. My wife's Honda rebel 1100 does this same thing only when it's in gear without the clutch pulled in.
It was probably a computer glitch which when you restarted the bike it corrected itself. Unfortunately that’s a glitch you can do without for safety reasons
You may be right. I also tested it with my heat gun....I read that some types of magnets lose there magnetic properties when they are heated....but I didn't want to get it too hot for fear of damaging something else.
I can see that being a recall from harley. That's a Safety issue
U turns are tuff on a big heavy bike I dropped mine in front of my house I was out of practice hadn’t ridden in a few months and was turning to go around a trailer let out on the clutch and killed it bike went off balance and I had stitches in my hand I felt those start pulling and I just layed it down now I am thinking there’s no one around to help me pick it back up so I went by the book put my butt on the seat and started taking little steps backwards got it up but if there had been 1 more gallon of gas in the tank I don’t think I could have but like you I had engine guard and saddle bag guards so it suffered no damage when 980 lbs wants to go down it’s going thanks for the info on the magnet switch .
The kickstand switch seems like a "safety" requirement in some international markets. But, I like those motorcycledropgaurds that you recommend. Now you don't even need to use your kickstand at all. Just park, jump off the bike, and lay it over on the motorcycledropgaurds. No kickstand required!
Take the sensor wire and ties the ends together to fake it being up all the time. Until they make a dummy plug for it.
Owning a pan america these types of issues were a regular until a few updates later
Hi Cue, I met you in Arkansas. Super nice guy, hope to meet up with you guys again. I had the same thing happen to me on my old 2005 Vulcan. It has the same feature when the bike is in gear and the kickstand is down the bike will shut off. The problem with mine was my spring stretch and cause the kickstand to bounce around. I put a new spring on it and was good to go.
Oh no, that was a tough ride home.@@PeterAngles
Agreed! that is very dangerous. Glad you're okay brother.
I experienced that when I was 15 years old... It never happened again due to my awareness of the possibility of a bike shutting down in a slow turn. That was in 1967. I am now 72 years old. Even if all that you mentioned is corrected, the possibility still remains of a shutoff during a slow turn...
Just found your channel. I quickly subscribed after viewing great site. Hope to see many other videos. I see a Navy flag in the background we’re you in the navy?
