In the Philippines, we were given a book of surnames by Spaniards that Filipinos can use. Is this the same in Mexico or other countries in south America?
Yes and no because there's much more Spaniards physically present a lot of people just took names from them instead of having to refer to a book but this was the case in much more indigenous colonies like Peru but not in Mexico
@@GoblinRatz oh ok. My surname is not in the book. There's also a lot of current Filipino surnames that are not in the book. So probably it's the same case.
No. Most of us have Spanish blood. My forefathers came from Spain in the late 1500s. Also, Mexico didn't require Natives to have last names until around 1860, which was after independence. About 65% of all Mexican men descend from Spanish men, so our last names came from Spain. Men who descend from Native men are more likely to have gotten their last names after independence. But I don't think they had to choose from a list of last names.
Hey Tokyo! Thanks for the vid, I was wondering if you could help me out with my surname Rivera from Calvillo Aguascalientes I know little about it. Anything helps. Thanks you!

Since the Philippines was occupied by the Spaniards 355 years ago, can you say the origin of Hispanic last names started in the Philippines? The Philippines was colonized by Spain for 355 years while Mexico was for 300 years and the rest of the South American countries followed, therefore Hispanic last names were used first in Las Islas Filipinas. Also, in the Philippines, a Spanish person or Spanish-speaking people called it "Castilla" or "Kastila" not Latino or Hispanic. Why is that?
What you're saying doesn't make any sense. Hispanic last names originated in Spain. The language of the Philippines is Tagalog, not Spanish. Also, the first Spanish settlements were built in the 1490s on the Caribbean, and in Mexico beginning in 1519. The Philippines wasn't colonized until beginning in 1565, which is later. The Philippines was part of the Spanish Empire longer because it's independence happened later. Mexico became independent in 1821. The Philippines separated from Spain in 1898.
@TheTokyoDrifter I know that Hispanic last names originated in Spain, but where it was used first. Yes, before Spain, everyone started with their own native language. The only reason the Philippines did not continue the Spanish language was because of the colonialization of the United States.
