Stairway inspection problems (weld it back to code!)

- #welding #repair #welder I can’t believe the inspector missed this but called out something to change that wasn’t even code. Not the first time I’ve come behind a building inspector that didn’t know code. But we come in and do our best to weld and fabricate everything up to the customer and inspectors standards. These small structural mobile welding jobs are my specialty. But mid job I get a change order and have to bring in one of my sub contractors to give me a hand. That’s just par for course in the welding business!
Here’s some tools I used
3m welding respirator- amzn.to/3oBd4kJ
Black Stallion welding Gloves- amzn.to/42aeLmX
Neck protector- amzn.to/43hZZw0
Black stallion welding jacket- amzn.to/3IOSMuX

"Children crave labor". best line evah!! Thanks Ant, you never fail to entertain.
Great video. I love the real world raw no BS style of your videos, showing your mistakes etc. I'm only a hobby welder but I have learned tons from watching your videos and get good entertainment at the same time. Win win! Keep up the grind.
That particular fire code is an interesting one, in the case of schools the idea behind it is having the landing large enough to get someone in a wheelchair evacuated onto the balcony into a breathable atmosphere and await fire rescue. While still leaving enough room for people to walk by. Atleast that's per KY firs code
That makes more sense now!
That's makes a lot of sense. At first, I was laughing like WTF Handicap accessibility for stairs 🤦♂️🤦♂️. Thanks for teaching me something new. 💪💪👍👍
I like how you take on awkward and tricky jobs. Top marks young man!
Thanks for your support Jon!
As a stainless fabricator, i absolutely love learning "real world" welding, like this.
Im stuck in a damn chair tig welding big pharma bullsh*t all day
Im sorry to hear that. At least youre not a wire monkey like me. I can to mig, stick, tig, and flux core but im stuck doin mig.
But I bet you make good money doing it. I'm 64 years old still working as a Fabricator, I Tig and Mig weld nearly every day at work, I have 3 More years until I can retire, Sitting down Welding in a shop is Good work To me. I've done my years working outside in the Elements, thankyou very much.
One of my fovorite jobs was building walkways for overhead cranes, lots of 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" tubing and 1/8" diamond plate.
I was/am particular about making things that will not snag or cut when people run their hands on railings etc.
Love to hear that! Guys get sloppy when it comes to that soemtimea
Hey man I’ve been watching you for years through your journey! I probably have watched every single video and always had a dream of starting my own mobile welding business, and definitely had some inspiration from you! Well last week I became a business owner, and things are already off to a good start. I’m still working my full time gig, but took the steps to start er up 💪 I know it doesn’t happen overnight
Congratulations I love to hear it!
glad youre helping out good people like this. lol dont let internet osha see you riding that pallet jack haha. thanks for the awesome vid.
🤣😅
Good thing osha doesn’t apply to self employed contractors
Great video! I’ve used the hobart fabshield 21b, absolutely love it when I can’t use shielding gas. The wind is brutal where I’m at too!
Both Montana and Florida are brutal for wind!
Good shit. I like how your videos are legit and not all show. You display flaws and mistakes. I find it more entertaining and educational. Keep it up.
Doing my best!
Love the video Anthony love these on the job videos! Keep it up man.
Have u considered getting a portable band saw? I like it because I can save money by not having to use the ocxy acetylene. And definitely more durable than grinder disc's. And for the flux core I prevent it from rusting by putting it in a tuperwear.
Anyways keep the great videos up! I appreciate the tips and tricks u share with us!
After 5 years of shop welding and watching your videos it keeps motivating me just don’t know where to start tbh . I can’t wait for more videos ! God bless
I'm a retired welder. Your videos are like being back on the job. I miss welding. Keep up the good work.
I’m so glad I watch this video I learn a lot.
24:55 concrete shrinks when it cures so that’s why there’s the small separation line. That’s also why control joins are a necessity on big pours.
He didn’t trowel them was my point on that one, also it had a 1/4 slope toward the dirt cause he didn’t mix enough mud, even said it 😅🤪
Watched the whole damn thing Rockstar! AND THEN, the best part, got me a tee shirt and sticker!! I believe the quality of your merch is gonna be quality like your work!! F'kin A Rockstar I can't wait!!!! skys the limit bro!
Thanks brother! I appreciate the support!
Lincoln Murex 7014 works great on ornamental iron work.
Good tip! I’ll try that next time
Your videos are always good. But lately they have been much better. Keep on push and rod brother.
Thanks man. Putting a lot of effort into the edits.
Always a good video!! Appreciate it
Hey Anthony Grampaearl Here. I haven't talked to you in along time. I just found your channel. I love it. You are doing great and keeping it real. I love your drive, your attitude, and your Getter Done.
Good work and love your attitude 😅
Another awesome job 🤘👍💪
handicap accessible stairs... good use of time and effort lol. Regardless of the silliness of the need for this work I appreciate the quality and attention to the small details. Good Job
I just got that same welder and it works like a dream super portable too
Super good video man
As always, great video.
Thank you sir
Thank you for all the information you give out in your videos I currently work in asphalt most my coworkers do welding on the side this is giving me a lot more confidence in starting my own welding side jobs
Good stuff man! Good luck out there. You got this!
I’m an asphalt guy to and bout burnt out been thinking bout going into welding
Love it!
Nice job well done bud
Cheers from Nova Scotia
Thanks bud!
"i don't make the monkeys. I just train 'em."
I'm stealing that 😂
🤣
nice work anthony keep it up brother
Awesome job 👍
Thanks!
great job. well done
Thank you sir!
Great video you always kill them jobs 👏
Fantastic video as always appreciate your time to film and share it. Like seeing the mistakes people make we are all human. But how can the guy doing his job not pick up on the picket spacings. Keep up the great work 👍👍
Crazy
Desiccant packs (or reusable desiccant things you bake in the oven) thrown in the bottom of your boxes can help you a little if you forget to take wire in. Isn't a cure all but could save you a ruined roll of 25 dollar wire for three dollars in desiccant.
Noticed your weldpro :) I have the weldpro mutiprocess 200 amp , weldpro 200 amp ac/dc tig, and weldpro cut 40 . Keep doing what you do bro !!
As always, love the video of the work. Maybe someone else said or you had it on but, Anthony Anthony Anthony, you need to have a harness on buddy!! Family first. Love your work.
Hey I use this little red thing it goes on your wire before the feeder wheels it cleans it pretty well it works s
Excellent video. I think I hate wind more than any other type of weather. I'll deal with heat or freezing temps. Rain is fine and I can live with snow. I have no use for wind and it drives me batshit crazy. When you mentioned you remember the stairs being there when you were a kid it reminded me of the time I got the job of ding some welding on the playground equipment I had played on thirty years ago. Most of the original stuff was gone (including the sharp gravel that was laid all over and around the base of the equipment) but the huge swing set that I swung on and lept off of the top of the arch and landed face first onto the sharp gravel was still there. Oh ya, did I mention that happened on picture day? Mom was thrilled when they sent home the proofs to see which pictures she wanted and saw my fat cut up lip and big gash on my forehead. I got to do some rust repair and hopefully future abatement.
Have a great week
That’s awesome it came full circle like that, I never repaired play ground equipment before
Me like u vibes I'm a welder from jamaica just come to the US to live want to start a welding business
a handicap accessible STAIRCASE. I laughed. Nice work dude.
Me too 🤣
Hey brother for marking steel for cutting with a torch I found the liquid whiteout pens work wicked and don’t burn away with the torch
I was hoping you were gonna run your tape to 21 on an angle and mark at the 7 and 14 on the wall mount for perfect spacing of your holes. Like you said, perfect isn’t necessary.
Wild amounts of out of position welding goes into stairs/railings. Good vid for guys who think they want to become mobile welders/fabricators. It’s some ball busting work.
Just get a MIG, more than 100x easier and stronger than poor arc welds
Nice video
As for the “handicap” rules, it has to do with accessibility for people in general, not just wheel chairs. Such as force requirements to open doors, clearance around doors/entry ways slope of walkways etc.
A suitcase and some .035 Hobart is the way to go, have used .035 linclon nr 211.
Nice Montana tags.
Awesome.
Your sub contractor dont look like no welder ive seen.
But the work is what shows.
What is a welder supposed to look like???🤔
Herm is the man! You should see the work he does
That's what the kids (mostly in their 20s) thought when I (35 at the time) took a welding course at the Community College... I'd show up from work in a polo shirt and throw a welding shirt on over that... but I ended up with the highest score in the class and did 1.5 semesters of coursework in one semester. Mostly because I applied myself and worked until the instructor was ready to lock up and leave, and the others would goof off after the first hour or so of class. Difference was, I paid almost a grand to be there and their tuition was being paid for by grants from the State...
I never had any actual trouble from anyone except for an instructor from another section of the class, who questioned whether I was actually a student, until my instructor set him straight. It was pretty funny, as he came back to me and acted like we were old pals...
Nice job! I could see you really benefiting so much from a self leveling green laser level man! With horizontal, vertical and plumb.. would be a great little purchase
I actually bought one lol! But this video is a back log it’ll be in videos in the future I’m sure
@@MeltinMetalAnthony haha I only just picked one up myself (I do what you do, but I’m in Australia) I was so sick of running string lines and spirit levels and shit when workin alone
That's awesome I've said it before you have the most realest world view on what it really is you don't mask anything I got that same chipping hammer can't go wrong with a EST wing and I think that's awesome that your subcontractors teaching his child how to weld in a world where things are so diminished we are short on people in our trade and I really appreciate the sarcasm about the Hobart wire I would rather use 211 innershield every day if that's all I had a choice to use on carbon steel but if you got to use Hobart I always used fabshield 23 I love that stuff it's the only Hobart flux core I like you can use it on galvanized materials and if I got to use their electrodes I like the Hobart extra low-moisture 7018 otherwise it's Lincoln Excalibur and esab Atomic rods all day long
Handicap accessable 😂 a stairs gotta love it ..
That kid is going to have a good trade and contacts to get into
Good vid dude. Got a tip for ya-@20.42 you got a level to make the line for your floor support. Go down to wally world & get yourself a compass-the type you draw a circle with. They make awesome scribes, and will follow your 1/8"-ft. nicely, just go along top cord.
Good tip!
Quick tip anytime you work you self weld up a temp plate to hold channel in place
Evolution makes a metal cutting circular saw i love mine i cut lots of plate with it i prefer it instead of a grinder or torch for cutting plate for things like this
Horrible loud sound compared to a torch or grinder.
@@Dabaroo yes but more precise
@@loganrench5680 I agree . But all fun and games until you have a bad blade. Or no blades
Dude thanks for the video I love the part where your telling all the know it alls not to bitch about repairing it!!!! Not everything needs to be rebuilt!!!! And that being said not everyone can afford that!!!! Thank you for the video!!! You did almost exactly what I would have done!!!! Great content!!!!
MY GUY!
damn right around the corner from where i live too lol
Yea that divide by four to find the spacing for three pieces, the way I explain it to people is you’re finding the distance of the voids not the spot of the piece
Gotta get the danger tape. Even though they’ll still ignore it
9:24 I recommend you store your wire In Tupperware, also make sure you place a silica gel packet in there, just for good measure.
Caution tape doesn't indicate someone to stop or cross through work area, but only to be caution while passing through. "RED DANGER" tape is the correct tape to use.
3:42 - I heard white out doesn't disappear
Clamp a piece of rectangular tubing across stairway at waist height with signage "DO NOT ENTER DEATH RESULT."
What’s an OSHA? 😂😂😂
That part where you put the C Channel in had my palms sweating seeing that pallet bending. I’ve done some sketchy things when welding, so I get it lol.
Good work man. I love what you do. Real life field work is never perfect or pretty, but you make do really well.
I do have a small filming suggestion. I saw this on another channel and it worked really well, but they put their GoPro behind another helmet so they can film in closer and see the welding. I’m a new sub so not sure if you’ve tried this or not.
I haven’t. I actually film with my phone 🤣
The stairs actually look steeper than would be allowed here as well.
When you come to an "open railing" do you blow the insides to clean it? Grease it ? Sheila shine it? WD40? Windex? Or use a sand blower? To clean the glass? And im probably gonna sound stupid but if the building is 10,000 square feet is 5,000 people the capacity of people that can fit in that building?
Iv only had problems storing solid wire
Darn it...wanted to post pic of rails I make. Weld them onsite to a 4 in flange plate using 3/32 7014 Lincoln rods. 7014 is very strong in my opinion
Heres the best question youve got yet ...do you think its the day ghat czme down to it or fcaw vrs smaw ....? I mean second day perhaps less wind.... Whatd it really come down to
I would love to learn how to weld
Listen people don't use angle grinders without the guard.. sometimes it's necessary but that usually means ya got the wrong tool on the job.
The children yearn for the mines brothaaa
🤣
Freezer bags work good for 5lbs rolls
If you dont mind me asking. What filters are you using in your respirator?
Does it take a long time to memorize how far a metal stretches in an area? In temperature...do welders weld in farenheight or Celsius? Or when you see a < is it understood?
The likely reason for all the previous mistakes…”When you pay peanuts…. You get monkeys”
When are things stich welded versus solid welded? And strength same or not?
Hey meltin how do you like that flux core welder I've been looking at getting one and want to know if there any good
Im sure that you know. They make a masonry wheel for a n angke grinder. Makes leveling concrete easy.
I’m almost done with my course and about to be certified. Question though. Would MIG be a good option to do all of this?
Is it too late for me to learn how to weld? I will be starting this new movement very soon.
If your railing has 20 bars is there a weld that is specific to the 20 bars? On the decent of the stairs standing from the top there are how many bars let's say there's 13 steps 26 rails on one side do you account for rebars on the inside of the other side of the stairs?
Since I'm not familiar with all my choices of rods can I choose the number of the closet highway or junction? If the street has a number under like >1000 Martin St
14:32 if it was me I'd grind or buff the curb just to get him "going" again since he is made of a rod and metal it would be have a æffect but what kind? Is the difference note worthy?
Use whiteout pen instead of soap stone and it doesn't burn off or disappear
My small little Johnson….level lol good real world video as always man
Bro you need to get you some Silver streak pencils you cannot burn those off with a torch. Best friend a welder can have
Getting her done with the yes weldee huh
what model weld pro welder is that? how do you like it??
+
Noooo . 7018/6013 is a pain/horrible to weld on these railings . 7014 Lincoln electric 3/32 stick weld at about 80 is perfect for this job . I weld all railings with 7014 Lincoln electric. It works perfect for me especially in the wind . 5lbs should be about 20$ please try it you won't regret it . Do a review on it ..
Once again great work man🏆 i imagine they need an elevator ?
I would think
I never heard of 6022 rod
What flux machine do you have? And are you running off 120v?
Do you ever use 6013?? Every time I use 6013 I get porosity in my welds. I hate using them. Am I just not welding right with them? Or do they just suck.
I would prefer 6011 alllllll day. I refuse to even buy 6013
Great job once again bro! How much did u charge them if u don’t mind me asking?
I think 6k between both projects. Paid herm close to 2k steel was like $1k. Like I said gave them a good deal. But I like the owner and what he does for the community
@@MeltinMetalAnthony you’re Badazz bro keep the videos coming 👏🏼
You can Flux weld in the wind
You can google it thou. Only rated to 15mph
Should’ve used danger red tape. That should really keep them out next time😂
🤣
