"Everything a lie. Everything you hear, everything you see. So much to spew out. They just keep coming, one after another. You're in a box. A moving box. They want you dead, or in their lie... There's only one thing a man can do - find something that's his, and make an island for himself. If I never meet you in this life, let me feel the lack; a glance from your eyes, and my life will be yours." -- First Sgt. Edward Welsh (played by Sean Penn)
"Look at this jungle. Look at those vines, the way they twine around, swallowing everything. Nature's cruel, Staros." - Colonel Gordon Tall (played by Nick Nolte)
"I remember my mother when she was dyin', looked all shrunk up and gray. I asked her if she was afraid. She just shook her head. I was afraid to touch the death I seen in her. I couldn't find nothin' beautiful or uplifting about her goin' back to God. I heard of people talk about immortality, but I ain't seen it. I wondered how it'd be like when I died, what it'd be like to know this breath now was the last one you was ever gonna draw. I just hope I can meet it the same way she did, with the same... calm. 'Cause that's where it's hidden - the immortality I hadn't seen." - Private Witt (played by Jim Caviezel)

agreed, i first watched it with some of my closest friends, i think we were all expecting an exciting war movie, ill be honest i was, then its poetry starts the movie, and the soundtrack being spot on, I was moved to fighting tears, but walking home that night i will never forget I knew I had just experienced God's take on war :)

Agreed. But hopefully one day a film will come out as beautiful and deep as this one. I watched it as a teen, and couldn't stop watching scenes from it again and again. It had so much depth.

My opinion is very close to VA's -- I think, over the decades, Terrence Malick became more like a visual poet than a conventional filmmaker -- this work is arguably his 'peak,' and is so high-concept it almost doesn't count as a "movie" anymore. Which doesn't diminish my fondness for it in any way, but explains why mainstream audiences pass it by.
After this -- New World, Tree of Life -- he gets even more 'arthouse,' which isn't bad, but never regains this peak.

The scene this music is paired with...."If I never meet you in this life, let me feel the lack.".....as the soldiers are "leaving" Guadalcanal and passing the fresh graves of all their fallen comrades. Powerful stuff.

I saw this film shortly after it was released in theaters. I was a boy then, I'm almost 30 now. This music has been with me for 20 years, I hear it all the time and it has become a part of me. This composition fills me with dread and depression yet I need it all the same. It's a hard sensation to describe. But when I listen to it and close my eyes I am transported to Guadalcanal and can feel an echo in my soul of the pain that lingers there

I've loved soundtracks for 30 years. Before the internet, when our only option was buying CDs, I used to think I was part of such a tiny minority that enjoyed this music. But the internet and sites like youtube or streamingsoundtracks.com showed me there are many, many people out there that share the same tastes and have the same reactions to this type of music as I do. What you describe I can really relate too. Thin Red Line is one of the greatest scores ever.

This great evil, where's it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doing this? Who's killing us, robbing us of life and light, mocking us with the sight of what we might've known? Does our ruin benefit the earth, does it help the grass to grow, the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you, too? Have you passed through this night?

Regarding the phrase "Thin Red Line:" It first came into being during the Crimean War, shortly after the Battle of Balaclava. The Times War correspondent wrote of the fateful charge of Russian Calvary, "12th Ingermanland Hussars" against the British, "93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot." The BEF commanded by Sir Colin Campbell recognized the dire position his infantry was in: "With only Balaclava and the Black Sea to their backs, he (Campbell) rode quickly along the line expressing his determination to resist - "Men, remember there is no retreat from here. You must die where you stand."[56] Campbell's aide, John Scott, replied "Aye Sir Colin. Needs be we'll do that." William H. Russell, of The Times observed the scene, later describing the Russian cavalry as charging at a "thin red streak tipped with a line of steel", which later became known as "the thin red line".

You are absolutely right. so unfortunate that it does not interest many people. yet this war, like so many wars, has left its traces, so old now. but the blood remains there.
where I live, near the shores of Mother Volga, the earth is red, red like blood sometimes, nature is strange.
there have been so many soldiers killed where I live, far too many.
in Crimea, sometimes the earth is also red. a warning, the fate?
I really do not know and I do not want to know.
"Thin red line" is also a metaphor to describe the area not to be crossed, otherwise it is irreversible.

@UC6vDJXuGyPB3TmXqegQSgTw Thanks for the response. The battle has been one of my primary points of emphasis. I have several books on the engagement. The most recent one "Stalingrad, The City That Defeated The Third Reich," by Jochen Hellbeck, has been an absolute revelation. The text is almost exclusively comprised of Russian eye witness accounts, officers, soldiers, civilians, etc...... I thought I had a firm grasp of what happened but reading on it from the Russian perspective has illuminated aspects I knew little or nothing about. For example, there are significant accounts from Sailors, Marines and others who manned the ships of the Volga Fleet. I knew the crossing was heavily contested but had only a high level, "arm-chair" historian perspective. The text also covers the valor and sacrifice of the 308th Rifle Division, of Siberia, under the command of Leonty Gurtyev. The division fought as though they were lions and paid a dear price. Clearly, there were many heroes in the battle.......... Have you been to Shadrinsky Bay? Is there a memorial or monument there? If you have not read the book, I highly recommend it. Have you always been interested in history?

    Luke Chapter 14
1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
3 And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
    4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightaway pull him out on the sabbath day?
6 And they could not answer him again to these things.
7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out of the chief rooms; saying unto them,
    8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him;
9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
11 for whosoever exhalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbors; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent hagan to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs to and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 And the lord said unto his servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall tase of my supper.
25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth
the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it began to mock him,
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an embassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
34 Salt is good: but if the have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
