  • Finding good clips and info regarding these songs are hard to come by so I thought I would share and learn some Adobe Premiere at the same time.
    These songs were used in Terrence Malick's film, 'The Thin Red Line', arguably the greatest anti-war film ever created.
    The first and last renditions are featured in the film. The first three renditions are found on the no-longer-available CD "Melanesian Choirs: The Blessed Islands". The last audio clip is an orchestral rendition adapted by composer Hans Zimmer for the movie's soundtrack.
    To the best of my research the words to " Jisas yu holem hand blong mi" are:
    Jesus is watching over me;
    Wherever I may go he is right beside me;
    Jesus is watching over me;
    No matter what I do his love will never cease;
    My saviour and my keeper beside me;
    All the blessings he has provided me;
    He is there to comfort and guide me;
    And his love will never cease.
    'Pray for Us' appears to be the same song and I suspect might even be a transcription error on the CD track list.
    ' God yu tekkem laef blong mi' is from the hymn ' Take My Life and Let It Be' by Frances R. Havergal, (1874):
    Take my life and let it be
    Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
    Take my hands and let them move
    At the impulse of Thy love.
    Take my feet and let them be
    Swift and beautiful for Thee;
    Take my voice and let me sing,
    Always, only for my King.
    Take my lips and let them be
    Filled with messages from Thee;
    Take my silver and my gold,
    Not a mite would I withhold.
    Take my moments and my days,
    Let them flow in endless praise;
    Take my intellect and use
    Every powr as Thou shalt choose.
    Take my will and make it Thine,
    It shall be no longer mine;
    Take my heart, it is Thine own,
    It shall be Thy royal throne.
    Take my love, my Lord, I pour
    At Thy feet its treasure store;
    Take myself and I will be
    Ever, only, all for Thee.

    The more I watch this film the more I am convinced it's the best war film, and simultaneously the best anti-war film, ever made. And the soundtrack, particularly the Melanesian Choir, is a purifying and elevating experience.

    I took me 20 years to understand the greatness of this film. My mentor told me it was his favorite war film n then I didn't understand it. Now it makes sense 20 years later why I didn't. Back then I was a film student, I don't think my mind could comprehend it's greatness or depth. Now I do n I'm speechless, it's cinema in its purest form. Thank u Dumisani Phakathi for being my inspiration n for giving me my first break in the film world by making me an intern in your documentary. I would never forget what you did for me...

    I love the simplicity and complete honesty in their voices. I'm so tired of all the over the top productions of so called religious choirs. This is beautiful.

    “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21), and it sings, loudly and beautifully.

    How can we create such beautiful, spiritual songs, and make harm to eachother at the same time? Why cannot dissolve our hate on the same place were this love was created? ...

    This inspired song JISAS MI KAM LONG YU NAO was actually written in 1990 by Benjamin Tekulu, one of my students at King George VI School in Honiara and was recorded at the SIBC studios in the same year by the student choir "KG6 King's Kids", produced by myself. The song quickly became widespread in the local churches. Sony Pictures paid Benjamin a modest fee for using the song in the 1998 movie "The Thin Red Line", although obviously the song was not yet in existence in 1943 when the movie was set. Since that time the song has become popular worldwide especially with expatriate Solomon Islanders but the songwriter is largely slated as "unknown" - just thought I would correct that.

    These songs remind me of my dear island of tokanod in kanaky (New Caledonia), we too sing songs like these called taperas (tempérance) which are holy hymns dedicated to God, the first time I heard « God yu tekkem laef blong mi » it was cast in a commercial aired on French national television, and since that very day I’ve kept searching for it online, the way these songs make you feel is something that we cannot describe with words, the joy and the peace you experience after listening to these works of art is inhuman, it seems like you are on a spiritual journey that leads you to the very presence of God. A big thanks to all my beautiful melanesian brothers and sisters for keeping our culture alive. If someone knows the translations of these hymns would it be possible to write them down, I would be more than happy, may the heavenly blessings of our dear Father flow abundantly upon us ❤❤❤

    The movie has haunted me for days. I think a big part of the reason was the music. I can't believe I waited 18 years to watch it.
