Jóhann Jóhannsson is Icelandic - he lives in Reykjavík - and is a musician, composer, producer and an active member of the country’s artistic community (as the founder of the Kitchen Motors label / think tank / art collective and also as a serial collaborator).
Jóhann’s stately and hauntingly melodic music has been quietly bewitching listeners for some time and his 2006 album 'IBM 1401, A User’s Manual' - was his most ambitiously-orchestrated composition.
Inspired by a recording of an IBM mainframe computer which Jóhann’s father, Jóhann Gunnarsson, made on a reel-to-reel tape machine more than 30 years ago, the piece was originally written to be performed by a string quartet as the accompaniment to a dance piece by the choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir. For the album version, Johann rewrote the entire score, and it was recorded by a sixty-piece string orchestra. He also added a new final movement - a version of which makes up this single - and incorporated electronics alongside those original tape recordings of the singing computer.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Johannsson.
Your powerful work will live in the power art you helped create. Thank you.
Lived for experimental music, died on coke.
Rest in peace, Jóhann Jóhannsson. The sun's truly gone dim...
first reply somehow
Damn its already been this long. Truly underrated artist
When i heard he passed. I saw the sun go dim
Just now getting into his work and saw this RIP post. Damn man.
Edit: I'm black. so by damn man. I meant God damn it man.. That sucks.
The song "end times" from (the 11/10 game) outer wilds is actually based off of this, and if you know that game, "sun's gone dim" is the answer to what "end times" signifies
As a big fan of this song and that game I can't believe I didn't know this
Wow, I'm amazed at how similar this sounds to "End Times" from Outer Wilds. And considering the title of this song, the connection is even stronger... I wonder if Andrew Prahlow took this as an inspiration to write End Times.
he did actually!
OMG I was thinking the same while playing the game.
The Suns gone dim and the sky's turned black
Cause I love her
And she didn't love back. (Those are the lyrics.)
lol and for some reason this song scared me
Well that hurts to think about
Forzaa awesome thank you so much
That Line Describes my Life with Girls 😓😥
that verse hits home man😔
RIP :-(
the teaser trailer to Battle Los Angeles introduced me to the work of this amazing composer. RIP Mr Johansson
:/
Earth will be destroyed by a broken hearted man.
We all broken in a way or another , a destructive man will harm the others with a wound or without it.
3:05
It almost was, rumor has it central mustache man had been scorned by a woman, so he took it out on Europe.
Quite a profound thing you’ve said here.
I rebuke you as a man who could only ever choose love. I see that outcome, but reject it no matter the cost.
He didn`t die...He became music.
Fuck you for being so brilliant! God bless.
That doesn't make any sense
@@crazyinsanepenguin His music is Him, his heart and soul... now go try and Kill Music; It doesn't Die.
No, he died.
I cant believe I heard this song 17 years ago as a teenager. A few more of those and I'll be long gone. May this song live forever.
........Everytime I hear this song I get in a fighting mood It fills me with sadness and anger. This a beautiful song I love it
When I heard of his untimely death, I thought of this song. It kinda hurts to listen to it now. RIP young legend....
Feels different listening to this song today waiting for the coming weeks of the coronavirus. Just knowing terrible circumstances loom on the horizon. Be safe my friends. We are all in this together.
Annnnnd here it is folks. The overly dramatic youtube comment that's fishing for attention and upvotes.
BlownMacTruck yeah why can't he be miserable like the rest of us.
Death Awaits I’m not miserable and neither are most people I know. The OP’s comment on the other hand…
No Where not in this together and no things might not be okay.
I came here from siren head
RIP Jóhann. This song brought me joy both in happy times and hard times. Thank you for the contribution you have made on this Earth.
Most bone chilling and impactful song ever just the sounds alone make it that chilling and emotional in my opinion. Such a masterpiece, RIP Johann Johannsson
Here's my awnser: Nikolai Galitzin was asked to do a film for one of the songs on the IBM 1401 album. He asked 4 of his filmmaker friends to come to Iceland and shoot 5 different stories, one story for each filmmaker. Then the 5 films were combined into one film, in a variation of the surrealist game of "Cadavre Exquis".
A song that can evoke every conceivable human emotion is not a song, but an extension of the human condition
This is a very powerful piece. There was so much emotion throughout the whole song that it actually left me speachless the first time I heard it. One of my favorites for sure.
Rest in Peace to this legend. I remember hearing this for the first time and couldn't breathe for the entire song. So haunting and beautiful.
Me too. Can't breathe...
This
Using is so good that it’s the reason I wanted to see Battle LA because they used it in the trailer
Listening to this whilst looking at the moon and the stars is just magic absolutely one of my favourite songs of all time
This song revels the one thing that mankind both loves and curses: Its humanity.
That was one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a really long time.
The best trailer ever brought me here.
RIP Johann Johannsson,
One of the most brilliant artist of all time.
4 years and counting...still very sad that such a wonderful contributor to music has left us much too soon, RIP Jóhann Jóhannsson.
I’m really going to miss you. Your music was a part of my escape from this world.
Rest in Music Johann!
Strong words from a strong human, I feel the same. I can only imagine you've been through a lot, for you to write that comment. Peace be with you. As peace is about to come and collect me.
I respect you stranger.
Over and over I watch this video, over and over my brain tries to wrap itself around the message. If any.
Wonder. Full of Wonder. Wonderful.
Vielen Dank JJ Schade das Du Dich entschieden hast zu früh diese Erde zu verlassen. Wir vermissen Dich und deine einmalige Musik

+Vatian YOU.
RIP Johann. You were one of the best to ever do it.
Johann Johannsson brought me here
Im grateful for this mans work. A true genius who was only just beginning
RIP amazing music
A moment for people who are still finding the song
This song made that scene from Nerve creepy af and even more sad.
I feel like this would have been a good song for the Cherynobl trailer
Might have sent too many flashbacks to the Battle: Los Angeles trailer.
*DIBS*
It might've been too cheesy (even cheesier than their trailer already is).
He actually worked with Hildur, so it makes sense.
I felt that it would be perfect for the credits of avengers endgame
i think of this song more than ever these days
RIP
We had Johan Johannsson.
damn i love johann johannssons music so much, so when i heard the song in the trailer for the movie Battle:LA i was hyped because i thought he would make the soundtrack for the film. The movie was great, but i hope that he makes the soundtrack in the sequel.
My love lost, this music can’t bring you back but this music will bring me to you when my last breath says forgive me.
This song has moved me for most of my life.
The Sun truly has gone dim. Rest in peace
Reminds me of Fieldwork-This Is Not The End
same.
Well this one released way before than Fieldwork-This Is Not The End.
What an interesting song. Evokes introspection, causes stillness and deep reflection...and a dash of deep blue sorrow for good measure, Like a post apocalyptic vision of a shattered soul.
+Jessica Dolley Yeah. Kasparov also had a dash of deep blue sorrow. lol
I audibly groaned at this. *eye roll*
This has truly held me through the worst times in my life. Dust to dust, ash's to ash's. Rip
For all it's worth, you have been an inspiration to many, including myself. May you rest peacefully. Loss of words. Still can't accept this. R.i.p.
Who else got goosebumps when this song came on @nerve
RIP, the world of Music has lost another great composer, but your music will live on.
This is great song, great composer Johann Johannsson of our time. Fist time I heard it in trailer Battle for LA, I saw it again and again. Director of trailer used this song ideal.
This song reminds me of a soldier, a religious soldier who fights for rightousness and proctection of elderly men, women and kids. A hero that the world is waiting for, for every day that passes, this world is getting worse and more sad.
He doesnt need to be, but I just said what I had in my mind brother. Im a religious guy, so maybe that's why :)
The song doesn't get sadder as it goes, it get's lighter. Also, I think this song is more about getting over someone you loved than anything else.
His name is Finn, he fights bad guys with his best friend Jake
*****
Because non-religious people are evil.
I hear ya, the idea of being part of a truly noble cause. Clarity is a powerful thing and having it through faith makes bad situations less so.
It occurred to me soon after hearing the news of his death that Jóhann’s music was uniquely qualified to soundtrack the mourning of Jóhann.
i think this is the only song that has an emotional effect on me it entirely changes my emotion while i listen
This came up in my head right after the first person I fell in love with told me she came to realize that she never actually loved me and that it was all just infatuation..
I understand this song on a much deeper level now. 😞
This was used on the Ad for that LA alien invasion film a few years back yes?
first time i've heard it since then. This full version is amazing!
that song made me cry... a very strong feeling ..
this song sounds like the feeling i got when i had to come to terms with the fact that i couldent win this girls heart who i really loved. the moment that i realized her heart was truly somewhere else, has finnally been manifested into a song... thank you Johann Johannsson
Anyone who put a thumbs down, must have gotten lost from looking around for a Kardashian video
I can't say I liked Battle: LA at all. It was pretty lousy, and I love most alien invasion movies. But at least it introduced me to this awesome song!
The movie was terrible. The trailer was amazing!
Richard Montgomery Exactly!
@@alzareshwatch this /watch?v=YxD02c2pIsI
I will always disagree, but the one thing we can agree on is the song.
There was an old youtube video of a Halo Speed Painting with this playing in the background, the video has since been taken down due to copyright but this music is beautiful.
The worst thing is.. I've begun hating people for being so flawed, evil and destructive. But this hate leads to nothing but more despair and wrath.. Trying to find my way back into light and love, free from judgement, free from the negativity surrounding me. Love is the only way back into the light, the only way to free ourselves and eachother, that's the only thing that brings true happiness. Being loving, caring and present, in touch with the heart and the soul. Then we will change this world!
Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson was an Icelandic composer who wrote music for a wide array of media including theatre, dance, television, and films. His work is stylized by its blending of traditional orchestration with contemporary electronic elements. Jóhann released solo albums from 2002 onward.
Born: September 19, 1969, Reykjavík, Iceland
Died: February 9, 2018, Berlin, Germany
#Iceland
#Trapped
Also: Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson could earn his second consecutive Oscar nomination this year. Fresh off the Oscar trail for his work on The Theory of Everything, Jóhannsson comes back with something very different-a startling, tense score for Denis Villeneuve's border thriller Sicario. His work was widely recognized in theatre, dance, television, and films. But you had to read the notes to learn of him. A brilliant man, but a haunted man who turned to drugs, as many great artists have throughout the history of music. RIP
Jóhann died in Berlin on 9 February 2018 at the young age of 48. German toxicology reports indicated that a lethal combination of cocaine and flu medication was the likely cause of his death.
I didn't realise that Johan was exactly 100 days older than me. His music does something in my brain that no other composer does. It is the crystal on which I grow my hopes and self.
I knew the IBM 1401 was saying something else after...
"The sun's gone dim and the sky's turned black 'cause I loved her and she didn't love back."
Who came here because of the battle los Angeles trailer.
Well that was an awesome video.
2021 ! love it !
Beautiful, just beautiful
You are losing sense of reality with this song...eternal traveling
The name of the film used on this fan music video is called: The Sea Of Perdition

I saw you once live and i'll never forget it. RIP
Please, update this video to a higher quality one. JJ deserves it.
I feel as if I would be really moved by this video if I knew what the bleedin' heck was going on.
The video depicts the end of the world after the sun blows out and the song is about how it feels like the world is ending and there is no hope for you after a love tells you she doesn't love you back.
+Sandman Stan very well put I'm sorry you had to go through that. It's truly the worst pain there is, heartbreak that is.
+Sandman Stan
I live there too, my friend. Very similar situations. Good luck to you. Pain is universal and this world will destroy us if we let it.
+Araxie Rose It's like The Martian, only shorter, and better, and Matt Dillon's not in it.
+Sandman Stan this is fucking true
4:46 sounds a bit like the opening to Guns N' Roses' November Rain
To the victims and families impacted by COVID 19.
The Feeling When You Know You've Been Screwed over and the Feeling Your Alone, Its The Effect Of This Song That Reminds You Of the Past. You Dreaded it So Much
This is painfully beautiful.
Thank you for this song Olan Rogers.
I think this is a good song to use for alien invasion movie
The symbolism of the video is brilliant. It also made me cry once I brought it all together. Powerful as hell.
More than 4 years have gone and I still didn't forget her... thank you, Jóhann. Just... thank you.
The video seems a lot to the movie Interstellar!
Yoooooo right??? That movie was freakin AWESOME!!!
Wow! I love all your music. This is the best, most beautiful music ever in the whole , wide world. Divinely, soulfully lovely. Xx ~`~
A beautiful piece of minimal music
This song reminds me of some random youtube comment from somebody trying to sound cool.
Just checking this guy, apparently he's doing the new Blade Runner movie score
Same here. Hearing this, gives me a little hope. Big shoes to fill though
Thought I was the only one... Lol
Chichi Vidya Blade runner 2 is going to be one hella of a movie Denis Villeneuve, Johann Johannson, Bradford Young wow
shame they had nothing to do with the movie
It's not about the lyrics, it's the about the mood it conveys.
Thank you for the music Jóhan. Thank you.
edge of tomorrow? :D nice use
came here from there :) nice find!!
no that's a different song
*****
what is that song then?
Justin Boyer I came here because the Edge of Tomorrow song reminded me of this. But I can't find that one anywhere. I just know "THIS IS NOT THE END".
Nope. This was used in Battle L.A. trailer.
Who else came here in hopes to finding that Edge of Tomorrow song? Lol can't find it anywhere.
Bingo
even on IMDb it's listed as "Unreleased".
jon williams Must be part of the film's OST?
Field work
is the person who made it
Dude, "This is not the end"
THE BEST THING ABOUT THE BATTLE FOR ANGELES MOVIE! THE TRAILER WITH THIS ON IT. EPIC IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT I THINK
His talent never gonna dim. RIP.
Battle Los Angeles brought me here
On the day he died.
You added some incredible and beautiful to this unbearable world. You remain always in our souls mr. Johann Johansson....
