FORESTAY, OUT OF THE WAY! [Adventure #21]

  • Who needs a forestay anyways?! Well, maybe if you want to do some sailing… but before we do any more of that, it’s time to do a partial de-rigging and remove our forestay so the boatyard can get to work on fixing our bowsprit and anchor pulpit.
    We’re don’t know too much about rigging, but we figure out how to loosen the backstay, and remove the forestay on our cutter rig sailboat, leaving the inner forestay to support the mast. With the headstay out of the way, the boatyard will be able to remove the remainder of our old anchor pulpit and bowsprit and start re-engineering a new, better-made stainless steel piece for us.
    To help out footing the repair bill, Ty picks up some work and we head out, back into the rat race of the working world for a few weeks… First stop, San Diego. Here, at least we’re still near the harbor and get to check out the coast guard station and cruiser’s anchorage.

    It's all part of the adventure. 10 yrs from now you may not remember a lazy Thursday afternoon, but you'll remember the day your bowsprit fell off. Keep up the great work with the videos, very polished.

    That's too bad guys, but great to see you taking it in your stride. It's also good for us to have a realistic view of the cruising life which involves lots of hard work, resourcefulness and flexibility. In the end it will make the good bits even sweeter.

    When you go install the forestay, loosen the back stay off until the holes for the cotter pins are flush with the inside of the turnbuckle body. you didn't have it loose enough when you removed the forestay clevis pin. Also, would have been better to remove the sail first, I'd get it off the forestay. The added weight isn't helping. Then secure a forward halyard close to the bow, and winch the mast forward until there's enough slack to slide the forestay pin in by hand. Slowly ease off on the forward halyard by moving the line around the winch with your hand. Then you can tighten the backstay. Hope that helps. don't forget to check you've split all your cotter pins.

      Mate great notes on all accounts, you are correct we porbably didn't have it loose enough and we didn't even think to remove the sail which would have helped tremendously. What is the best way to split the cotter pins, just use some pliers and turn out or is there a better method (on my list to research)?

      +Adventure when you put clevis pins in, make sure the cotter pin hole is vertical. That way you can drop the cotter pin in and come back later once you have tension on the clevis so it doesn't rotate when you're trying to split the cotter, then just use a flat-head screw driver. You can use some tape if the cotter pin won't stay in on its own as well. Electrical tape is really useful while dealing with your rigging. ;)

    you two work well as a team...glad that you can find work so that you can make the repairs...I drove in that traffic for 11 years as a truck driver...5 And the 405 are the worst..there is no getting out of the traffic unless you drive through LA in the very early morning hours...don't get discourage...soon you'll be looking back at this...enjoy your journey...

    Well, another good video! Trying not to sound like a creeper (just 'cause she's cute and all), but your wife seems to be very knowledgable and understand your repair needs. Refreshing! If I were you, I would listen to her advice on any repairs. She seems to research the problems very well.

    Bummer on the bowsprit, but better it happened when and where it did. Would have been a much bigger problem in a more remote area. You guys work really really well together as a team. Great to see that!

      The key to making a good team is leaving each other up the mast to consider what they did wrong the night before, instead of being in the doghouse should it be in the crowsnest?     There is a good video from one of the sailing schools, on tuning the fore and aft stays. They also show how to use the tension gauge, to properly set the tension, as it may not go back exactly as it was ,even though you marked the bolts on the turnbuckle. Now would also be a good time to inspect and lubricate the turnbuckles. Enjoy learning from your misfortune,(although I wish you weren't having so many). Thanks for sharing with us.

      Thanks Ronald we will search for the video on the tuning, it would be great to learn how to use the tension gauge (we have a general idea). We don't have one on the boat but may look this weekend at Chandlery.

      You two rock, at the same time we are jealous of your skills. I mean the wind generator you installed and the mast steps you made, really sick of intelligent Europeans. ;) Hopefully we are done this week or so, the fabrication is done and the fitting is correct we just need the final weld and setting into the boat.

    sorry about the Bowsprit, we had a similar issue but under sail and we lost the forestay in the process as well. Not a fun event. I hope you get her fixed in a timely manner and get back out there !! there is always something that sucks us back in

      That was our worst case scenario and glad that did not happen, how did you fair getting back to port etc? Sounds like you were safe in the end which is most important.

    Most people don’t head down the Baja coast until late October when the condition for the passage down the coast are best and, most importantly, the chances of getting hit by a late season hurricane are minimal. That’s the main reason people wait until then. I can understand you wanting to avoid the HaHa, but honestly, it’s a fantastic event. I crewed on it one year and it was phenomenal. Yes there are a couple of beach parties, but it’s not what you might imagine. It’s actually very low key, and very family friendly with lots of activities for cruising kids, too. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Plus, you could have saved a ton of money getting that work on your new bow sprit done in Mexico. Probably the whole thing would have been less than your deductible.

      Nothing against the Haha if that's what you enjoy. We wanted to spend time exploring the villages and more remote places along the way with out the big crowd.

    Great update! Been to more than one of the anchorages in San Diego you were talking about. Hope that all worked out with the bowsprit. That really can be costly.
    Have you moved south from San Diego yet?

      Still in the boatyard, hoping we are complete here in Ventura in no more than another week. Then we are thinking one last shot to San Miguel and then straight to King Habour or San Diego.

    WOW. Would have done it myself...if possible. Just saying...a stainless steel plate and mount and a new bow anchor system mounted to it.
    $7k is nuts. Any chance at getting it done cheaper...IN MEXICO?

      Welcome to the marine world (your own skills will help you a lot) this was $800 replacement they built, the labour was the rest of that 7k. Crazy! We did some to help reduce the cost where we could but the fabrication is well out of our league, we re hoping the final bill will be slightly less, but I feel it will be more.

    Did you say $7000.00? I just pooped a little. you better be having to work to pay for all that labor! I'm tearing my new to me Westsail apart right now in Port of San Luis. Im glad you guys are slowing down so, I can catch up! I am apparently one of the ppl you are trying to avoid during the Baja-haha. I am trying to put things together in time to make the trip. I hope you guys reconsider. Its a great way to meet other cruisers and, make some life long friends. I dont know if I-ll make it past Ensenada but, i want to have the chance to make a few connections abroad.
    Alas, I have to work to pay for stuff too(no labor, though!), to finish Oasis. I really hope we have the chance to meet in person. Your episodes are great and definitely keep me motivated.
    GET BACK ON THAT BOAT!

      Ahh, very nice, hope you can get your boat together and make the Haha! Nothing wrong with the Haha, we just really want to take our time done the Baja coast... I think the Haha only makes 1 or 2 stops on their way to Cabo, and we anticipate taking a couple of months exploring little towns, islands and anchorages along the way.     I think $7k is outrageous. That guy is taking you for a ride. I don't know what you editing delay is, so I'm sure this is a done deal.

      Yes unfortunately it is a done deal, we are about 2-4 weeks behind on the realtime but we were limited already on timeframe to get quotes. Although this is super expensive we are confident this will be a beast to be reckoned with. The actual piece is only $800 and all the rest is marine labor :(

    Ouch! Everything on a boat is really expensive. I was thinking of modifying/extending our own anchor roller system and the sticker shock seems to have scared me off of it now a little bit. I knew those bow rollers are expensive, but labor is even more expensive, especially for specialized marine work like this. Maybe I could fabricate something on my own, but there is a lot of stress on a bowsprit, even if it is just carrying the anchor, and not the whole forestay. It's gotta be pretty tough to hold up to those forces.

      Everything you said is what we were thinking, the fabrication was around $800 and the rest the marine labour. We did want a beast to stand up to two anchors permanently mounted and be able to have the force withstanding those loads.

    The bummer is the price. Not being able to sail for a few days seems almost like light relief. So sorry you've had this setback, but that's boats, right?! Stay strong - Kia Kaha as the saying goes here in NZ.

      That is boats you are right, hey lets make the best of it and get it done right. We plan on be able to anchor through a cyclone if needed. Kidding we don't want to test that.

    just get flat stainless stock and a small circular saw+dremel+power drill/driver with metal cutting blade/bimetal drills and you can build all of it yourself for a few hundred bux. i built mine for well under $200. i have a next gen rocna.

      Mate we sorely lack those skills, bloody good on ya. Sounds like the way to go and you can't beat the price, we will be happy with ours in the end and I guess there is no turning back now. Ours is quoted at $800... the rest is marine labour :(

    I'm king of the ... crack wooops! Splash. So glad it happened when and how it did. Enough of that. I got my mates certification not far from the CG helo pad there. That mooring field was not there and what a great idea! There used to be a squatters anchorage across the harbor off the Silver Strand. I guess they got tired of running them off. Make sure you go to the zoo and wild animal park. You will do fine. It will be more expensive than you plan and it will make a fine sea story for the telling. I can hear the "salts" telling it even now. Good luck and I'll be tagging along in spirit.

      We were surprised how many boat we there... tons! And the dinghy docks were packed full, two or three deep. I'm sure you're right... everything on a boat seems to be more expensive than planned, but a great story nonetheless! Cheers!

      Thank you and it sounded high to us, almost all of that is labour and judging by the work they have done it does seem justified however still bloody ridiculous.

      I'm second that motion. if you hauled ass to Mexico the labor would be about half of what it is in the us. also wouldn't hurt ty to learn how to tig weld stainless (if he's good with his hands and RUclips lol). cheers to you both.

      Grrr yep, Mexico is where we have grand plans to do additional work like hauling out and redoing the bottom. Bloody no idea how to weld however that would be an awesome skill to learn, carrying the tools however. We lack room on board :)

      Joe King The Repairs of this nature will be much more expensive in the US that’s true! BUT the job done in the US will be far better than anything in Mexico. The availability of material and skilled craftsmen in the US is far better than Mexico. I have seen the quality of repairs inMexico I will pass. Mexico is better for unskilled labor were you work with them and ensure tasks are preformed to high standard.
      Scraping, sanding, painting are good examples.
      Take paint and supplies to Mex and hire labor. Sit in the shade watch it being done!

    You can use a wrench or adjustable on the top of your turnbuckle and a spike, screwdriver or even a flat bar to turn the body. Great video I ho[e all your repairs go well. Sorry to here your plans got averted, But isn't that what happens when you own a boat?

    Spent a night and a day on a yacht in San Diego ( Sunshine Harbor) back in 97. Best of times.The old design relied on that bolt and complicated wood design, not so bad as doomed to time and/or the strenght of the bolt. I thinking windlass belongs back on deck, re-inforced out to stem. w/twin rollers, maybe sprit and samson post? At least a hitch for Genekar Tack? Sail on you'ns

      Not great on the investment front right now, not bad either just kind of blah. Mostly individual stocks in a few sectors, nothing really in retail and some invested in the VIX future hedges.

      Huh. Had to look it up (vix). Anybody making a killing about now ? Mine has Emerging Tech. for some focus as i kinda work in that industry, and see that as the way out of ww recession. Little wonder Elon Musk is my hero!!! But so is Jimmy Buffett, seen him five times. The rest is safe bet, mid cap i think it's called.       I'm curious too as I'm trying to plan exactly how I can cruise while working. I'll most likely be doing some type of programming work directly from the boat if possible.

      I am a Marketing consultant and was very fortunate to have good work available when we came in and the stars just aligned to really help out with the financial burden of the repairs. It would be possible for me to continue if I was interested but to be honest it is another complication while sailing and trying to focus on our main goal.

      Remote work is great if you can work on your own schedule and take weeks off at a time, we decided to pursue our goals on a fixed cruising kitty rather than devoting our time to work while cruising.

      Yep, that's the important part.. stronger better, and hopefully we'll never have to worry about it again!
      Ty picked up some contract work with his old company do marketing and trainings.

    You have a wooden template it's broken.Take it to any Metal fabrication shop get them to make it in stainless steel under $3000 or take it to a wood shop $500.Or It had too much overhang why no set it back over the deck not in front then bolt it back in $ Free it fix it self.

      This was a complicated piece, they did use the existing as a template but it also needed a lot of tweaking as it integrated with many other parts. The entire piece fits neatly around the forestay spar attachment and also needs to fit precisely with the windlass and hawsepipe, there are also cleats integrated for the bow as well. The fabricated piece was $800 the marine labor was the rest.

    Being an engineer, it sickens me to see how these boatyard companies take advantage of people. That price for labor is ridiculous. Don't know how they sleep at night. Start a fund drive and best of luck.

    7000 $ I think they saw you coming, I could fabricate what you want and ship it out to you from here in France for about 1500$ all in, and I would still have made about a 1000$ always check out a cheaper option, anyway good look with it

      Thank you Rachel, we explored the most reputable boatyard and were curious to see if our insurance would help out. I think the quote was $800 for the fabrication and the rest was labour.

      Your guess is as god as mine, I am not a proponent of any insurance really. I feel like they make so much money off the consumer and you never really know if they will cover problems.

    Suggest you take a look at SV Panope's anchor tests before spending on any money on anchors. He is doing the best anchor testing video series I have seen anywhere; here is an example video ruclips.net/video/l59f-OjWoq0I/видео.html agree with his conclusions, I have been using a spade for 15 years with fantastic results, suggest every boat should have at least three anchors, one needs to be a fortress for sand and mud bottoms, and the new Mantis anchors look like a great kedge or second anchor.Fair Winds..

    I think I would have rather stayed on the boat and worked as opposed to sitting in that traffic nightmare. I've always refused to live more than a few minutes of work. I'd rather live in the ghetto and be close as opposed to spending half my life in traffic.

      Agreed, way way expensive. If it was not for insurance it would have been an entirely different outcome I think.
