- Eaten Alive… or a close call at least! In this episode, join us as we drive back and forth across California for Ty to work, taking in the beautiful mountain views along the way. We stop at Donner Pass, a place with quite the interesting history… It was here that a group of pioneers became stranded for the winter, and was forced to resort to cannibalism, and later America’s first transcontinental highway and railroad passed through these amazing mountains. There’s some breathtaking views, but we are anxious to get back to Varuna and see how the repairs our broken bowsprit are going. We return to the boatyard to see the progress. So far, they have a mockup of the new anchor pulpit, custom built to fit our boat and our two anchors. We can’t wait to see it all put together again!

Footage from August/September 2016
i drove my 18 wheeler over donner pass many times over my 43 yr driving career.brought back many memories. great vid guys thanks
Thanks Bob. How was that drive for the grade, I am sure there are much worse out there?
not bad but it can sneak up on you if you dont pay attention,i always drove it after midnite, less traffic and i like the nite time drive
You two have become quite the cinematic couple. Love the sights and scenery.
Thank you both, you are awesome as well.
Great update! It will be nice to see how the new design comes out.
Great video. Enjoyed the views and the update on the project. The info on the old rail line and Donner pass was very interesting. 2nd on the dead cat. Keep up the good work!
Thanks William, we have a deadcat however some of this footage was taken on a phone and not the best. Glad you enjoyed the video.
The bow sprit looks like it will work good. Good video guys:)
Look for the pictures on instagram, it is a beast.
Well I'm glad its working out for you two. Hope all still goes well and you get back on the water soon.
Thanks Brian, fingers crossed this week we will be back out.
Glad to see you picking up some work. Somewhere along the way an awful lot of the cruisers have concluded it's the viewers responsibility to fund their dream of cruising around on a boat. I'm not against patreon but I'm working my ass off to fund my dream and if youtubers aren't careful they're going to give all viewers a bad feeling about giving money away and mess up what might be a good thing. Good luck to you guys, I hope you make it to Mexico and beyond. Be safe.
Thanks Rick, we support a few Patreon sailors that we feel dedicate some hard work to their productions. Unfortunately like you say there are some that rely on the generosity of others and even worse do not acknowledge the power of those supporters, some of the large numbers being made should in our opinion be shared with people less well off. We share our cruising budget with our Patrons each month and we have planned our cruising kitty based off our hard earned cash to last us for 3-5 years of cruising (if we stop breaking things). Our Patreon goal is to get us to a level of being able to donate time, money and labor to others along our journey. Thanks for watching mate.
Good that the insurance is cooperating.
Some really nice scenery off the freeway! Looked a good road for my Harley, as well.
wavesfromSeattle
Yea, it would be a good bike ride. We are very pleased to have good results with our insurance. Cheers.
Enjoyed your video, and your adventures!
Thanks.
As always enjoyed your video, hope you get fixed up soon and start sailing again!!😀.
Fingers crossed this coming Wednesday or Thursday. :)
Just love your videos keep up the good work. Mark for Oz.
Thanks Mark!
Beautiful scenery I loved it when I lived there
Would be a very nice place to live, we could imagine a nice cabin self sustained in the bush.
that's very doable...but I would never give up the boat...
Sounds like a plan but bloody expensive mate, well great vid and hope the work is done well, see ya in a couple of weeks on the RUclips's g-day you legends 👍😆.
Cheers mate!
I guess the boat repair will move the anchor forces further back inside the hull, so hope thats in good shape. A bit like putting a crown on a molar tooth.
The rigidity of the repair will distribute the force throughout and should hold well.
awesome thanks for the history lesson
Glad you enjoyed.
Great to see your doing it right! was hoping you didn't go with wood that will work really good. Maybe see if they can have a stainless pipe coming down from the top stanchion between the anchors it supports the stanchion and keeps the anchors from crossing over each other.
Hmmm I like that idea, again thanks for the great tips here. We are going to add something else off the stanchion to support it, we will look at that.
I drove in that area as highway Tractor driver running freight from California to Ontario. The look at the mock up was interesting.
Stay tuned for better pictures, I think Hillary posted to instagram with the final results. California to Ontario Canada? That is a long drive.
Suggestion for you. Instead of removing the bottom rail above your bow, you might could invert the rail. Basically cut it off and the stand pipes and point it toward the stern of the boat and then you could have it out of the way and now have a seat on the bow of the boat.
Hmmm and this is why we like to read out comments! Had not even thought about that, we will take a look today and see if something like that is possible. It is a tight area with the two stays and we are going for strength first over looks/comfort, if possible though it sounds great.
I hadn't noticed the Gunwhale at the forepeak. My bad. Cool beans guys!! Varuna well on her way. The two of utes are smart enough to figure this stuff out as you go. Having Patreonic probs, I'll be back.
Greg you rock either way, we sure appreciate it. Almost finished here at the boat yard.
I really enjoyed to drive thru the mountains to Donner Pass, I love seeing the history.... just curious through you often seem to have access to a car. Did you get a company car, still have your old one, brought or hired a car. . The new bowsprit is looking good and it shows the professionalism of a yard that take the time to make a mock up to make sure it is going to work. Mind you, they will also charge for their time but sometimes it pays to get it right. Don't forget the Asymmetric Spinnaker Mount .
Glad you enjoyed it, the history is amazing and those were hard times. This is a rental car from work and it has been a real help with getting some projects and errands done on the side. It is looking great and almost complete, debating how to mount the asym now. Maybe just off the front anchor loop.
are you going to slip the anchor locker into two separate compartments for separate anchor leads? loving your adventures so far!
Now that is a good idea !!!!! we had two on the ship I was on.
Great idea and exactly what we wanted to do, however it does not look like we are able to do that. There is limited space and our secondary will have most rode so there would be a weight distribution issue. We would like to run a pipe back down towards the bilge more and have the chain sit lower, though it does not look like that is possible with the water tanks. For now the plan will be to carry the secondary rode in a crate.
HI not sure if you have done this, but on the end of your anchor chain have a rope / line attached to the chain then some where in the anchor locker have the line attached . Make the line long so it come out of the locker . Why , so if you need to let go of the chain all you have to do is cut the line , and this will all so tell you ,you are out of chain. If you have the chain lock up in the locker it will take some time to undo. Just A thought.
Done and done, we have about 25 feet of rode at the end of the chain. It is not attached to a fixed point inside the locker, but has a large block on the end to prevent it coming out without significant force.
Oh, the drama! Haha! Also, at the beginning, I thought that Ty was a hit man or something. Making $7k in a day or two in SoCal to pay for the bow repairs seemed a little fishy... Hilary, does this Brit guy have a history? Be careful! Donner's pass is just a warning! Seriously, funny video and another good update! Keep them going! Cheers!
Brit?? AUSSIE! :) Didn't Jason Bourne start out at sea? hmm..
I like the design of the new platform. Better to think things through than slap a quick fix on there and create more problems to deal with later. Another possibility for dealing with the lower rail, if you want to keep it, is to move the entire bow rail assembly up from the deck to the cap rail, and shift it forward a few inches so the bases of the rails line up with the cap rail. You might gain enough clearance for deploying the anchors, but you may also have to check the length of your life lines as well.
Hmm another good idea and maybe not that expensive either, the problem may be getting the through bolting done on the gunwhale though. We will take a look in the morning, the lifelines would need to be redone but that is fairly cheap.
no drone footage in the pass? seems like that would have been awesome!
Ridiculously windy up there, would have been amazing for sure. I think it would have called for some very early rising to look for no wind.
I wish we had known you were going to be in Reno, we would have loved to treat you to lunch and shown you around a bit
Thank you for the lovely invitation either way, we try to keep relatively current on our whereabouts on the Instagram account. RUclips is usually 2-3 weeks behind.
I don't Instagram even though I know I should be doing it for our channel. Maybe I'll download it and figure it out so I can stay more up to date.
Hello to you both,
I am pleased you could find what seems like a really good boat yard who know what they’re doing, as it is far from easy to fit and or alter in any way that makes it at least as strong and hopefully stronger, more like the original bowsprit before THAT was damaged, and as well, can suite not the necessary parts only, but your requests as to having a shorter bowsprit, though I would have thought either bending the lower bow/bowsprit rail up may have been enough to make room for your new anchor, just a thought,. and I am sure by the time you see this, it would have been history with the work finished.
I would be really interested as to how they or you are going to finish off the surface damage to the bow ‘floor’, and or any holes , which may be covered or used by the new bowsprit? I wonder whether a sheet of steel or hardwood will cover the surface damage to the bow floor? Am I right in thinking the only thing below that part of the boat is the anchor locker?
I cannot wait to see what the finished job looks like, and as they say, the new design being in effect an I Beam there will be the strength you can rely on.
Please forgive any errors, my keyboard is playing up at the moment.
Take care and good sailing with no damage from now on!
mrbluenun
WHAT, why didn't you say so before we cut it off! Haha, yes it is history. I like your idea and we are going to see if we can reuse and t the very least we will add extra support braces from the stanchion. Most of the holes will be reused except for a couple of through bolts that will be sealed and moved. The others are the Windlass and Hawespipe that are staying, there was no damage to the bow deck area thankfully. It does need to be cleaned up as the old epoxy and such needs to be removed.
Yes you are correct it is only the anchor locker below here, the finished product is getting there and it looks incredible.
i,
And this is just to let you know how much I appreciate your detailed and kind reply to my comment, thank you so much.
Not to you in particular but in general I often feel I am blowing just so much hot air you know. Next time I WILL at least tell you my ‘un-expert’ thoughts BEFORE anything goes wrong, though quite how, I will have to think about that, ha ha ha!
Take care, and the good thing, if there’s anything ‘good’ about something going wrong or breaking, apart from the fact it was because of it being ‘bodged’ and done after the initial build of the boat, is it happened to a part of your beautiful ‘home’ AKA your boat, is it never happened to something as crucial as the mast or engine.
No need to reply to this, as it was just a note to say thanks.
Did you consider just heating the lower bow pulpit and bending it out of the way?
It would be infinitely easier to just remove the lower pulpit at the vertical and recreate it with either a smooth bend in it upwards, or a do some other custom jobber to make it work with the anchors. Heating and bending it would work, but would be difficult to bend it properly to look like it was designed with a smooth flow to it.
Bottom section has been removed,it was not adding much support to the pulpit and we are most likely going to add some extra "arms" to brace it attached to the bulwark. Thanks to your comments in this section we have some idea to reuse the section and maybe even make a seat?
Cool beans! A seat would certainly be bonus.
I always look forward to your next video. Being from NW Oregon myself, I feel a kind of connection with you two.
Happy travels!
Thanks, you get perks for being from that area.
Will the jib furler be connected to the same spot with the new piece?
Yes, one of the more complicated parts was designing it to fit around and snug the existing forestay spar.
Hi Guys, I am re-fitting a 35 year old boat for coast cruising. Since my boat is paid for I thought why do I really need insurance. After seeing this video, I immediately called the insurance man and I'm in the process of insuring my boat. Since you are changing the design of your bow sprint, is the insurance just paying for a replacement of the old design or are the absorbing part of the cost for the upgrade? I hope you can tell us the final cost of the project if it's not being to personal. Thanks for the great videos, do you think you might ever sail to the east coast? Good Luck and God Bless! Bill S.
G'Day Bill,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and it is great to hear you are working towards your own cruising goal. We will certainly share our final costs when all is said and done, nothing is too personal as we want to make sure others get our reality and not have it glossed over. The insurance will absorb almost all of the cost as the replacement is "relatively" the same, the design has not really changed at all rather just the material. The material cost was very minimal in difference, the labor cost was the same either way (expensive).
Not knowing the make of your boat, how was the original designed?
The boat is a Pearson 367, the one that broke was cobbled together 3inch square blocks of 1inch thick teak. The main support was two 1x4 pieces running down either side support all the weight.
use auto leveling for the sound. also a dead cat on your mic will help.
Thanks, we use a dead cat almost all the time. The video at the start was filmed on a phone though so it was not the best and the car footage was not the best either. Does autoleveling work? We have found it to create problems sometimes but maybe we need to do it in post, more reading I guess. Any specific parts you think of in the video? Thanks for your thoughts.
your audio was all over the place in this video.
yes you need to do it in post processing. Here are the normal steps -
The loudness of different regions in a recording should be unified, so that a listener doesn't have to adjust the volume all the time. Use volume envelopes to amplify or lower the volume of different regions, so that in the end all parts have a similar loudness.
A compressor (dynamic range compression plugin) reduces the volume of short and loud spikes (like laughter) and the output audio will have a more uniform loudness. All sounds with levels above the threshold (The threshold should be located above the average loudness of your recording, but below the volume of very loud spikes) will be reduced.
Compare the loudness of the normalized audio file to the loudness of other recordings like similar videos. Raise or lower your volume, until the levels are similar. This is your global volume level adjustment.
The final step is the peak limiter. It ensures that the maximum audio peak level is small enough, so that no clipping or distortion is possible. You should keep your peaks at least below -1 dBFS, some suggest much more (-3dBFS, -6dBFS, ...) .
Hope this helped. Note that I dont do any of those for my own videos as I barely do any post processing at all. Dont use mine as examples (unless youre using it as an example of how NOT to do videos lol).
This is very helpful, not sure we understand it all though it does have a familiar ring to it. We will need to re-read this a few times to get our heads around everything. Thanks for the tips.
Wish i knew you were in Reno Area, I would have put you up for a night. Could a Had Barbie and beers around the fire. Cheers......
Oh bloody missed the barbie, we could have gambled away Varuna :) Cheers mate and we appreciate the thought.
Adventure Adrift 8
how do you sail upwind to donner pass
glad yall got fixed..but for 50 bucks i could have made a new bridge out of treated 2x6s from home depot in about 2 hours that would last 20 years
Well 300 million years ago you know the ocean went up there.. :) Johnny if you are close we can give you lots of construction projects at your awesome rates. xoxo
ok tell me where yall are headed..im in sicily..but heck,,, for lunch or dinner i can fix anything on your boat..i used to be an engineer..now im just lowly doc
just like anything else exotic in life..airplanes sports cars yauchts..theyll get you for big bucks... when you can really fix almost anything from sears or lowes and home depot..obviously you want it fixed properly and to last decades or longer..blessings yall..come to sicily our treat anytime. johnnyAF747@yahoo.com
if you ever need advice on an inexpensive quality fix..let me know..i can usually get yall fixed for under 100 bucks on anything.so can a thousand other boaters..just ask around before you spend money...hugggs yall
The sound on this video is terrible. Constantly having to adjust volume up and down and even then i cant hear what the boatyard guy is saying.
So sorry for that, we are always trying to work on improving our sound. Seems to be one of the most challenging things for us.
Hi Guys, at I am not sure if you can see this, at 2.14 Hillary is standing in front of a rock and it looks look a face on both ends of the rock. oh just got what you mean about being eaten !!!!!
Haha, very observant and we didn't even notice. Hmm where is that rock face looking... ?
Oh did not see that ! LOL
Hiking with flip-flops? Dumb.
Well we wouldn't call that a hike, that was pretty much a 100 metre walk. :)
got'cha
Generally like your videos but this one in poor form, maybe leave the US history lessons
for someone else Ty
Sorry you did not enjoy Tom, anything specific or all in all was it no good? We are not thrilled with it, we do want to tell a story that is sequential to what we are going through in realtime. We are desperately waiting to get back out on the water.
+Adventure Adrift
I thought the video was in line with all your others. I enjoy the little tidbits of info and your distinctive voice.
NOT effing FUNNY! in fact, downright DISGRACEFULL!
We didn't intend to offend anyone, So sorry.
