Handheld portability is certainly a plus, but for usable storage you need to get the $700 model. Hi Taylor, awesome video! one question is that can doing this for long periods of time damage the deck? I'd assume that would be a lot of data coming in and out of one port .
Thanks, TZ! It shouldn’t cause any damage if there’s no physical stress on the connector (I.e. the deck falls or the cable gets yanked a weird direction). The port on the Steam deck can handle plenty of data throughput.
Hello man great content keep up the good work 🎉. quick question? Hows the thermals in the deck? Is it loud? (Fan) also in dota 2 u get 30+ fps would u get much higher fps if u tone down the settings? Like low preset? Thank you in advance
The Deck runs pretty hot, you'll def notice it but it won't burn you. The fans get very loud. You could probably get some more frames out of Dota 2 messing with settings. The game is built to scale well on different hardware. As for an actual figure, I'm not sure.

The experience is decent. You'll not want to be doing much coding on the smaller screen or the built in keyboard and, you'll be limited on what you can actually write with. I'm using v2022.2 on my SD and I let the IDE handle downloading of a modern Java JDK.

In gaming mode you're going to be limited by what hardware it detects. However, you should be able to dial in what you want in desktop mode since that will make use of more of the OS/hardware supported resolutions and refresh rates.
@@bis5667The regular mode is pretty simple in terms of customization so it just routes output if a display is connected and there's no way to change it. If you really need that screen back, desktop mode will let you map your outputs in the display settings.
Oh yes. It's all about lowering settings until you don't feel those anymore. Freezing is not likely unless you really max the settings to something like 4k.
I'm not sure if I understand your question but there's no software involved. I'm just using the Anker usbc hub with the Deck, connecting accessories, and then using desktop mode on the Deck.
When in desktop mode you can set the resolution to whatever your monitor supports. You can set the graphics to 1440p on a 1440p but your frames will suffer. Setting it to 1080p on 1440p will cause it to look a little blurry but you'll get better frames. There's also the option of FSR which does some upscaling to prevent blur.
After experiencing resolution and refresh rate inconsistencies when switching between desktop mode and Steam OS on a 4K display. I decided to purchase a 1080p gaming monitor. I purchased the BenQ EX2710 monitor and I can confirm it works flawlessly between Steam OS and Desktop mode. As stated on your video, when outputting to an external display, Steam games run better in 1080p in Desktop mode. However my emulators run better in Steam OS via EmuDeck. Having a 1080p display offered a flawless experience when switching between the two modes.
Considering while in desktop mode you cannot download directly to your SD card & have to use the internal storage…which is nothing, (64GB model). ABSOLUTELY NOT. I want to sell mine
The latest beta allows you to select the destination library when installing a game in gaming mode. But if you install the games in desktop mode you could always do that.

@@TaylorBrauer yea I’ll let ya know how it turns out with running windows on the deck. I’ll tag you on socials. I have some accessories on the way too for Monday. It’s gonna be a good start to the week next week.
Kitty!
Look like that Disney duo from Jake and josh
can u do test w warframe on tht ? its f2p games and have open wolrd maps , it should be pretty good games for testing handhelds too as its not tht demanding but its quite demanding depens on your setting tho.
How is the experience playing with mouse and keyboard on Gaming Mode ?
Last time I tried it the keyboard wasn't recognized at all. Only in desktop mode was I able to get it working.
@@TaylorBrauer Sad to hear that, I hope they get it fixed soon.
@@Jota_Eze I'm sure they will. I wouldn't consider it a deal breaker. In the "Game Mode" you are limited to a lower resolution. In Desktop mode there is no such limitation.
I have actually ran FFX/X-2 remaster in 4K
It looks great!
I'm having trouble making up my mind. I really want a steam deck, but I also want a gaming computer. Do you think it would be better if I bought a steam deck and hooked it up to a monitor to play games or do you think it would be better to just buy a gaming computer. I don't have enough money for both, so I'm trying to get opinions on which is better.
im in the same boat, i have already a gaming pc but starts to shows its age, so im between upgrading or getting a deck
It depends on what games you want to play. If they are more demanding then PC but if you travel alot then the deck would be a good choice.
What if I want both to travel and play AAA games?
@@robertcampbellii9787 the deck will run most games but check proton db you can search any game and it will tell you how the game runs if at all and people even comment on the issues they had
@@robertcampbellii9787 the deck won’t play games like cod or destiny 2 due to the anti cheat software they use. I’m using it to play story driven games on my back log. It’s run GTA and outer worlds pretty smoothly at 45 fps. I will say staring and squinting at a tiny screen for more than an hour gets me dizzy though
What are the graphics settings in Dota and CS go on video?
A combo of medium and low.
sick flick at 9:25
Haha thanks!
Can I hook up mouse & keyboard to steam deck oled and just use it on the deck itself without using a monitor? Does feel/work like you’re using a regular PC compatibility wise? Like could I play world of Warcraft that way with no issues? Or do u need to map steam decks buttons to keyboard or something or is it just plug & play
Yeah that should work as long as you have an adapter to use since there's only the one usbc port at the top I believe the regular UI interface would support mouse and keyboard when it's connected but if not you can always pop it into Desktop mode and do it that way.
What do I do? My mouse and keyboard won’t work on it I’ve tried using a hub and I’ve tried plugging them into the dock itself but it doesn’t do anything when I try to play a game it tells me to use the deck for the controls
Have you tried running in Desktop mode?
I’m having some problems to run the games from desktop mode, they work perfectly good form game mode :S, any advise? I tested with other proton versions as well but nothing
Wow Thats awesome thank you for the video would you be kind to tell what setting in the game on No Man's Sky you have ? i have trouble to run it smoothly. I have a Dell 32inch monitor G3223D 2k (2560x1440) 144hz. Any tips would be great. Thank you :)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. 720p medium/low is going to get you smooth gameplay in No Man's Sky. That game is pretty demanding.
@Taylor Brauer Does my monitor with the resolution would have effect whit the settings? And when you say 720p medium and I have everything in low already.
I got ready or not running at stable 40-45 fps on handleheld mode. Tweaking the settings using fsr up scaling
Wow, that's freaking awesome. I gotta revisit that game on the Deck.
@@TaylorBrauer it’s definitely not like the best expierience by any means but it was playable for sure! I got to the 3rd level then got stuck I want to retry it on mnk and I’m sure I can do it
Would performance be better with the new OLED deck due to its 90hz capability?
The screen’s performance is better. The hardware powering the screen is not. So, depending on the game, you’ll notice smoother gameplay compared to the LCD SD but not higher FPS.
What does the windows button on a keyboard do on the steam deck?
In desktop mode it will open the linux menu just like Windows. In game mode...I'm honestly not sure.
anyone playing long hours MMO's? in desktop mode? how does it perform, even at low graphics?
How the hell does your desktop mode run so well, I’m trying to play new world on low settings and the steam deck sounds like it’s about to explode
Could be different optimizations for New World. I haven't tried that game out so I'm not sure that I wouldn't experience the same performance as you're getting. My Steam Deck always sounds like a jet engine so you're not alone there.
@@TaylorBrauer I followed you guide using desktop mode rather than game mode on 4k 120 display it was much better, I think deck verified games are the ones that look better because new world with high settings 1080p looks garbage 🤣 is it dangerous to have the cpu in the 90s?
@@OTDECK Glad you got some more performance out of it. The Deck should operate well within it's rated temperature. Just don't press it against your skin to the point where it hurts you.
As a handled its better. Single player paradise.
i cannot do it on 30 to 40fps on dota2
Yo how are you getting the 120hz on gaming mode? I’m trying to use my 100hz portable monitor but it only saves the settings for desktop mode and when I go into gaming mode mode it’s just 60fps(60hz) maxed and doesn’t even allow me to go down linearly it jumps to 30 then 25 20 15 etc I’m really stuck trying to maximize my monitor with 90hz the desk can perform on so any help ik im late but any help would really be appreciated
edit: I can run some games like tf2 that are not as intense on desktop mode with the 100hz and it’s fine but fallout 4 in desktop mode oh boy I can barely move
In gaming mode you're going to be limited by what hardware it detects. However, you should be able to dial in what you want in desktop mode since that will make use of more of the OS/hardware supported resolutions and refresh rates.
What settings were these games using?
low to mid settings.
How do i get it back to laptop screen? Certainly I don’t have keyboard I can’t use the keyboard on steam deck
Pressing the "Steam" button and the "x" button at the same time brings up the virtual keyboard. Not sure if that's what you mean?
@@TaylorBrauer no , i mean now it cast on my monitor my steam deck go black
I want the screen to be shown in both my monitor and steam deck
@@bis5667The regular mode is pretty simple in terms of customization so it just routes output if a display is connected and there's no way to change it. If you really need that screen back, desktop mode will let you map your outputs in the display settings.
So do you feel any lags/freezes?
Oh yes. It's all about lowering settings until you don't feel those anymore. Freezing is not likely unless you really max the settings to something like 4k.
Poor Peter Parker
I was 1k like person
Thank you! You're awesome. Have a great weekend.
What software do you use to connect deck to the PC?
I'm not sure if I understand your question but there's no software involved. I'm just using the Anker usbc hub with the Deck, connecting accessories, and then using desktop mode on the Deck.
The Deck *is* the PC.
Do the graphics look blurry on a 1440p monitor? Will it look better on a 1080p monitor?
@@chchris25 That's great news! Glad you were able to get the best out of both use cases.
Considering while in desktop mode you cannot download directly to your SD card & have to use the internal storage…which is nothing, (64GB model). ABSOLUTELY NOT. I want to sell mine
Interesting, I didn't know that it prevented a download to the SD card. Do you mean specifically games or browser downloads?
The latest beta allows you to select the destination library when installing a game in gaming mode. But if you install the games in desktop mode you could always do that.
@@TaylorBrauer it doesn't, applications and such just install to the main drive by default. Granted installing things on external is a pain but it's not like you can't do it.
not sponserd cap

I don't have time to watch this video. Can someone compress the final verdict of the video in 1-2 sentences?
Ain't nobody got time for that.
@@TaylorBrauer Hey, how do you like your Steam Deck?
@@Rokannon I like it 👍
Please play DOTA2
30 fps is not normal it's unplayable.
Gonna have to disagree with you on that one. While it's no 60 or 120, 30 is def playable and can be enjoyable on many games.
so what your saying is gaming wasnt worth it really until now? oricina of time ran at 20 fps and is probably one of the best games ever made.
@@traynor1987 people loved that game when it came out. I never got excited for it but I could tell they did a good job. But even back then people new it was pushing the N64 to it's limits and at times didn't run as well as desired. Probably why they put it on GameCube with no graphical upgrades at all, which is typical of Nintendo, they sometimes don't make any sense.
