- The Senate was second only to the Imperial Military as a source of Alliance personnel tbh

Shame that Palpatine dissolved the Imperial Senate eventually in A New Hope as there's an old saying: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
If only Palpy died unhappy (The Godfather III), or at least lived a long yet long-suffering life (The Godfather Coda) just like Michael Corleone.
They kind of had to in order to seal their doom. "By granting the conquered the illusion of control they become your most loyal subjects. Remove that at your peril" - Julius Caesar
All the vices of the Republic were present in the Empire. Including the self defeating flaws.
Just as the Empire formed crawling inside the Republic, so did the rebellion to the Empire.
They’re so proud of themselves, they don’t even care. They’re so fat and satisfied. They can’t imagine that someone like me would get inside their house. Walk their floors, spit in their food, take their gear. Their arrogance is remarkable. They don’t even THINK about us.
This channel made me appreciate Padme so much more, between seeing her husband turned into a mass murderer and seeing people applauding the death of democracy, and realizing that she now has a massive target on her back, no wonder she lost the will to live at the end of Episode 3.
"Everything has proceeded according to my design..." Sheev Palpatine battle of Endor.
Palpatine clearly WANTED there to be a rebellion... one he could easily crush to demonstrate to the galaxy that he was right and placate the outer rim at the same time.
He needed an enemy to distract the population generate fear and to keep his grip on power and he'd run out of Separatists a decade before. He thought he could control it all just like he'd orchestrated both sides in the Clone Wars.
Allowing rebellious sentiment to fester in an otherwise toothless Imperial Senate was part of that strategy.
He just didn't expect them to actually win.
I think it was mostly due to the fact that he never thought Vader would turn on him. Vader's betrayal gave the rebels a chance to win.
After the Clone Wars, Palpatine either became lazy in the years ruling the Empire or he became so focused with studying the force for power that he neglected to manage the same strategy he used for his material power: to play all sides.
Yes, he would likely never intend the Rebel Alliance to win, just like he never intended the CIS to win the Clone Wars. Though unlike the Rebellion, he had the very leader of the CIS as his apprentice, and made the governing body of the Confederacy out of greedy Corporations corralled by the Sith for their own pursuit of power. Palpatine is clearly as cunning as he is maniacal so I doubt his fall was due to stupidity, more likely arrogance or overconfidence.
@@bruhicusmomentus3060 yes. Palpatine was very confident that Vader would never leave his side. The only thing that Palpatine never took into consideration that Vader had children and that they were still alive. He thought after Padme's death, the last remnant of Vader's past life was eliminated. Even though Ashoka was still alive, she didn't mean that much to Vader than Padme and her children would.
@@bruhicusmomentus3060 it was definitely hubris that lead to him miscalculating and ultimately being defeated. His arrogance blinded him to the very real possibility that his carefully orchestrated master plan could potentially go t!ts up and unravel completely. Even his cabal of dark side mystics/prophets he kept as advisors warned him DO NOT go to Endor, as their visions foresaw pretty much what happened. And well, in true prideful dark lord style, he ignored them.
It's good to also remember Palpatine was always fond of flirting with danger. He was always fond of putting himself in the crosshair of near-death experiences, and fond of walking around where danger lurked even in his youth. Sith training by Plaguies did not help this one bit, and probably just made it worse. His chancellory was practically him doing this constantly, and so as Emperor Palpatine also many times put himself deliberately in dangerous situations, because he was both arrogantly confident in his own power, and it was a continuation of this thrill-seeker habit.
Him showing up at Endor I feel was partially influenced by him enjoying taunting death by seeking danger and thrills.
Turns out, Palp was not the only one who plays the long game. While sheer dumb luck (or the force will, whatever) plays a big roles in the rebel alliance's victory, Padmé and her fellow rebel leaders beat Palpatine at his own game.
Cham Sindula was also a successful rebel
who both survived well into the galactic civil war and was not affiliated with the Senate
infant he was apposed to Orn Free Taa, his
own senator.
Cham Syndula survived as long as he did because he never left Ryloth and thus was never seen as a direct threat to the Empire.
Otherwise he would have been subject to Lord Vader's personal attention.
Palpatine: "I AM THE SENATE!"
No need for me to add more meme notoriety here.
4:14 Ghost Padme when she learned Mothma and Bail let her be the scapegoat: "Et tu brute?"
Except that was the whole point, only one takes the risk so the others can maintain.
3:31 Galen Marek's house symbol used as the insignia of the Rebel Alliance in EU Legends.
Of course, even with that game in mind, the insignia's origins are still debatable. It might have been based on the old Jedi insignia, alongside some Old Republic ones.
3:14 It sucks that Disney's New Republic was lame and got itself blown up by the Starkiller weapon.
Compared to EU Legend's New Republic who at least managed to fight off most of the threats thrown at its way.
Reminds me of the New California Republic's motto, the latter's efforts.
Not really the EU version of the new republic died two years earlier than canon thanks to the vong war thanks to it leaders who did a terrible job maintaining it.
True, but in their defense that was a massive war the likes of which the galaxy had not seen for millennia agains a genocidal enemy with technology they had never seen before. Plus the Vong had sent infiltrators into the galaxy for decades before that and were responsible for causing a lot of the problems that the new republic was facing in order to distract them while the Vong gained strength. Compare this to the Disney new republic who collapsed immediately when the first order attacked their capital and didn’t have to deal with any emergencies that threatened their rein for decades and were still so powerless that they couldn’t deal with a bunch of pirates running around with old imperial technology.
@@therabidsquid432nerf9 fair enough but at least the canon new republic mostly had peace for 30 years compare to the EU version new republic where they quite literally kept getting into wars every two weeks.not to mention the canon one was also surprised attack by the first order like the vong so there kinda the same here.
@@markr3730 That depends on what you mean by peace. Their is this good theory thats called peace theory. In this theory it argues that there is two kinds of peace, positive and negative. According to this the new republic in canon would fall under negative peace which basically boils down to there not being any war. The problem with this is that in negative peace the many other problems are not addressed. In canon piracy in the new republic is worse than ever before, even worse than under the empire or the old republic. Pirates even have their own super star destroyer and ruled entire sections of space as petty despots. Just because there was a lack of war doesn't mean that they were good governors of the galaxy. At least while yes, the New Republic in legends was constantly at war it did so for good reasons. Like when they intervened in the black fleet crisis where the Yevethan Duskhan League when they attempted the xenocide of all non-Yevethan sentient life or during the Corellian crisis when they went to war to stop the tyrannical government that took over Corellia and it's surrounding systems from completing their attempts at ethnic cleansing by the forced expulsion of all nonhumans. Contrast that to the new republic in canon that let pirate syndicates grow in power and let imperial warlords walk over them for years and never so much as protested their actions, let alone make any attempts to stop them. But non of that compares to the disaster that was their failed intervention at Kaddak where a bunch of pirates SOMEHOW managed to destroy an entire new republic fleet, and after which the new republic just did nothing about a bunch of pirates slaughtering their soldiers. Its no wonder the new republic is a joke if they surrender immediately and just let a bunch of scum kill their soldiers with no repercussions whatsoever.
The Senate was supposed to be a symbol for the common citizens will for the Republic, and the Empire took away the freedom that those people once held so dear to them.
Exactly. Say what you want about the republic but at least you had a voice in it. The empire robbed voices until only its remained.
Rip the roman republic, hello roman empire.
There is a good discussion in dark lord the next book after revenge of the sith . Palpatine has a meeting with key senators organa , mothma , iblis , and a couple of others , palpatine explains his immediate plans for the empire post purge, and afterwards a good discussion about the rebellion and gathering weapons and allies. And how palpatine would walk softly for a time because the member worlds still had a lit of arms and defences because of the clone war , organa predicted a time of peace and prosperity and demilitaiation as the empire continued its military expansion. ( palpatine had just explained he was planning a new clone army of natural life span soldiers to replace the clones over the next 18 to 20 years along with regular recruits)
Organa seems like he knew quite a bit of things would be going.
I like the consistent videos and the increase in imperial era videos! Keep up the great work!
Palpatine was channeling his inner Augustus.
Thank the stars for the immortal need of light in a place of total darkness, even if it's just the need of a feeble candle.
One candle might not seem like much, but the thing about the light that gives it an advantage over the dark is it shares its power. One candle can share it's flame with another to double the amount of candles and light. And this can be done so on and so forth until there are so many light sources they finally pierce through to destroy the dark.
@@zexalbrony4799 Although this lacks an element of poetry, Matt Stover might like this.
@@michaelandreipalon359 Well sadly I'm not a poet and I do know it. lol.
The fight goes on.
Besides the Partizans there were at least two other groups with little to no support in the senate who survived. Specifically the Mon Cala and the Mimban Liberation Army.
Andor is brilliant, love the grounded insight we get into imperial organization.
So that's how Bail and Mothma never got arrested
You can't really avoid being a part of the existing hegemony. That's why Rebel leaders were part of the Senate. There's no other way but to hide in plain sight and have power in the system you want to topple.
This was an amazing video. I always look forward to your uploads
thanks for keeping this spoiler-free!
Ironic how MANY of some the Alliance's best troops and battlefield leaders are Imperial Defectors.. you'd think the Empire would realize they're doing something wrong
I think they did, just that just about none of them cared to do anything about it. The emperor himself was busy indulging in the dark side of the Force & practically let his people ran just about everything for him, while his people were too damn busy either amassing more power for themselves or fighting against each other. It's just the same old shit that plagued & eventually collapsed every goddamn Sith empire that came before.
If only real leaders had the same courage and heart that the rebel leaders did.
For me Andor is the best piece of star wars media since the Clone Wars, Rogue one and the new six Thrawn novels.
Bail Organa was a boss.
Nostalgia! It has been a while since we had a video with 'dark truth' in it!
I’ll b honest I hvnt seen any of your vids lately but just came around tn and I love to hear your thought and insights on the andor show. Would love to hear more from ya as the show continues
Palpatine is the senate
If Palpatine is the Senate and Padme is the Mother of the Rebellion according this channel, does this mean Palpatine is also the Father of the Rebellion?
In a way, yes. I mean the most powerful of the rebel cells were funded by HIS Senate & hell, HIS military academies provided the rebels with both good number of troops as well as military education. As illustrated by laws of physics, the greater the force, the greater the resistance, & thus, the irony that the rebellion wouldn't have been so huge & so successful, without the resources Sidious bled to the rebels.
Thats papa palpatine for you
It's funny how Andor proves Palpatine right to disband the Senate.
Those rebel groups under the leadership of the rebel senators also probably had access to better intelligence
Love the video, for the next one could you explain a little bit more in detail why and how the galactic empire trained more rebel soldiers than the alliance?
Palpatine, said he was the Senate 😂
Ah, a video involving something about Andor, since there hadn't been weekly videos like with The Mandalorian, Clone Wars season 7, Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, and Kenobi, I thought you were skipping this series or at least waiting until it ended to make a video. It actually didn't bother me since one, I'm just not that interested in Andor, I'm more interested in the stuff coming after like Bad Batch season 2, The Mandalorian Season 3, the Ahsoka series, and that Jedi Tales series. And two, honestly videos coming out on Wednesday is not really a good day for me.
Still, though, despite not being into Andor the good thing about Star Wars, even parts of the franchise you're not into can present elements and ideas that are interesting at least by themselves, like this one about the Imperial Senate and how it helped to breed Rebel Leaders. You think Palpatine would have kept a closer eye on things, but I guess Luke was right, his overconfidence was his weakness, once the Jedi were mostly purged and the Empire had a few years to establish a proper power base he thought he was invincible and that mistake cost him and the Empire dearly.
Say, when did the Executive Separatist Council become public knowledge? I mean, we see the council on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones and we see their members like Nute Gunray and Wat Tambor throughout the Clone Wars, even leading missions. The thing is, were they public knowledge? I would think Dooku and the Separatist government would do whatever they could to keep things quiet with the council. That publicly they would say the droid army and droid navy was just bought from the megacorporations instead of being part of a deal to fund the war effort in exchange for political power. And I would think on the other end, the megacorporations would keep quiet on this, especially the ones supplying both sides of the Clone Wars like the Trade Federation, Techno Union, and Intergalactic Banking Clan.
After all, if the galaxy knew about how Dooku formed the Separatist Council, a lot of people would not take that well. Naturally it would make the Republic grow more distant from these corporations and even take away their representation in the Senate. Many worlds exploited by the megacorporations would also not take this well and see it as the Separatists being liars about not being controlled by corporate powers. I’m wondering how many people in the Galactic Republic joined up because of its growing anti-corporate stance. Of course, then what would people think about the special contracts between the Republic and companies like Kuat Druve Yards, Sienar, and Blastech Industries?
I always wondered how you could even have a Senate within an Empire.
You either Julius or you Augustus.
That's bound to happen when you build on the foundations on the establishment you robbed & hijacked, instead of tearing down said establishment apart completely.
The romans did.
Sweet 👍
very interesting, well structured video, you got really good at this :)
If only insurgencies were actually bottom up
I listen to this as if it’s real life history ♥️

Palpating sounds like a Roman Emperor
I think Andorra is my favorite.

Alliance to Restore the Republic…. They lived up to their name and restored the republic….along with all the problems that led to their fall in the first place. These Senators didn’t care about the state of the galaxy (where was Mon Mothma or Bail Organa when Naboo was blockaded by the Trade federation?) they only cared about their power and privileges that they lost under the empire. These Senators only wanted to restore power to the senate to restore the status quo
George, y u no put that dialogue in movie
And this is why I DONT and WOULD NEVER go to a protest, sign a petition or anything like that. If a government goes south u can easily land up on a list of people to disappear, that's why the sith grand plan worked so well. And in real life this has happened to, alot of the time it happens in history and nations where forced religious conversions have happened, people will feign loyalty then practice in the shadows, this is actually why European pagan groups are still around. But u will never see or hear of them. This is THE BEST form of government resistance. Not using so called "rights and freedoms" to put urself in the target reticles.
✌
I thought palpatine was the senate
I don't agree with this video at all. One of the first things ANH told us was that the Imperial Senate was very much still a powerful body that even the highest echelons of the military feared. It's all there in ANH if you actually pay attention to the dialogue.
but it's soooooo fuuuuucking slooooooow holy shit I feel like I'm watching a Rebel reality tv show...
