Appalachian Trail Approach Trail

My name is Joanne, trail name Greyhound. I am hiking with my friend Linda whose trail name is Bailout.
We are kicking off our hike of the Appalachian Trail! This is it! All the research, planning, hiking and exercising to get ready, are being put to the test. Are we prepared to hike 2,198 miles?
First step Amicalola Falls State Park in GA to check in and get our official AT tags. Linda is hiker number 74 carrying 27.5 lbs in her pack and I am hiker number 75. My pack weighed in at 23.5lbs. Our pack weight includes food for 5 days.
This is our first day on the Approach Trail, a 8 mile trail that takes you up to the top of Springer Mountain GA. This isn’t part of the Appalachian Trail, but hiking up the mountain is part of the tradition. We thought it would be more fun than driving up.
What an emotional day! Nervous that it will be more difficult than we thought. Excited to be on the trail finally and to see what adventures it has in store for us. Mostly incredibly happy to be experiencing the start of such a big adventure.
