    I think you both are a fantastic couple! I enjoy when you figure out any problems, big or small, together without getting mad at each other. God bless you , always stay together. Later in life you’ll will savor what you have today!

    The shot of the horses and riders wading through the water was something we have never seen while cruising. I laughed that you just gave it a few seconds of video, like it was something that you see all of the time, LOL!

      Ha, they were just too far away. But we were definitely bewildered. It took us awhile to figure out what was actually happening. That was the first time we’d seen it too!

    Because of your now abundant experience cruising and repairing your home, you'll know exactly how to order the metal work for your solar arch. Including a deadline delivery date and quoted delivered cost. I agree with everyone else who said, you've either been aground, about to go aground or you're lying... Unless you actually are marina bound and don't go anywhere... pleased your boat was safe, and you two are safe...

    I am also in St Augustine at English Landing Marina and it was not that bad. I stayed on board to react to any surge but we still had 7 ft on the poles for the docks. We were spared! Unlike the poor people of the Bahamas.

    I am so sorry about the people you lost in the Bahamas. It may not sound like much. I met a retired us navy couple in Gulfport ms. 2 days before hurricane Ivan. They were staying home. "Been here when Gilbert came through" i was back down for training after Katrina. The house they lived in? A concrete foundation. I hope they got out.

    We cruised with just 280 watts of solar, and six 105 amp golf cart FLAs, and kept our fridge/freezer running. But, everybody always wants more and we upgraded to 540 watts. Enjoyed your video.We love the west coast of Florida, too!

    I have a T37 and have ran it aground at full speed several times. If you didn't hit rocks don't worry about it at all, that keel is very strong. I leave my CB down 1/4 the way so I can feel the bottom going through shallow areas. If I feel it touch bottom just pull it up the rest of the way and back out of there. Also hooking your halyard up to another boat and let them heel you over by pulling it to the side while backing out is super easy. You may be nervous the first time but it works very well.

    Glad you made it back home with your boat. I live in Louisiana and the weather is getting crazy, Beaumont, Whinney, parts of Houston has flooded from a storm and people are being hauled out by the National Guard, police, and the Cajun Navy. There are more storms in Atlantic, Pacific, and the Gulf of Mexico, it really seems bad since the Hurricane hit the Bahamas, there are storms brewing everywhere. Stay safe and thank you for your videos, you show a lot of beautiful scenery, gorgeous homes, boats, land, people riding horses in the Gulf, I had to do a double take on that scene. I wish you the best. Thanks.

    Past time to replace your OEM alternator with a Balmar high output alternator. While you are at it, go ahead and get their battery monitor/management instrument. You will be very glad you did. Not too expensive and you will love having those Firefly's perform as designed.

    • @avisontheroad1262
      @avisontheroad1262 5 лет назад +8

      Totally agree with JL's advice. Once the plans for your arch fell apart (literally), you should have made replacing your alternator a number one priority. Not too expensive, it gives you another "power" option and Kirk can install it. I can still see the hurt but you made the right call about stepping away from that arch nightmare. Choices in life are not always easy but it's always better to cut your losses early. Now you just need to let it go emotionally.
      All that said, I have truly loved watching your sailing journey; from newbies to cruisers. You two make a fantastic couple: you work great together, communicate effectively and are very supportive of one another. ❤️❤️

    • @Luke_81
      @Luke_81 5 лет назад +4

      Absolutely this, the alternator is an absolutely critical device on a boat.

    • @richardstanford1832
      @richardstanford1832 5 лет назад +1

      Great videos - certainly one of the best sailing sites in my opinion. Looks like you have an old Westerbeke (40?). If so, and if it's the original alternator, it's probably a 55-amp alternator with internal regulator. That's not a good match for your new Firefly batteries. As J.L. Brown (and others) suggest - consider replacing it with a greater amperage Balmar alternator. It's not easy - but 'do-able'. If you go above about 110 amp you'll need to replace your pulley/belt system with either a two-belt or serpentine belt system. Balmar sells an upgrade serpentine belt kit that you can put on - but it's easier to have a mechanic put it on for you. Also - while good for regulating the recharge of auto batteries, the internal regulator just isn't sufficient. Get an external regulator (e.g., Balmar's ARS-5). That will optimize charging and will adjust for both alternator and battery temperatures - I'd budget about $2000 (or, as we in my family say "about 2 boat units") for the upgrade. Small note: be prepared for the reduction in horsepower to the shaft with the larger alternator (rule-of-thumb: 1 HP for each 25 amp). Keep up the fantastic journey.

    • @robevans5222
      @robevans5222 5 лет назад +2

      Agree. There is no such thing as surplus electrical power on a sailboat. In the course of doing an alternator upgrade, ensure that you have a good grasp or competent advice regarding the appropriate pulleys, drive belts and mechanical support of the alternator. There's ample power available, but it can be constrained by whatever is the weakest link in the system.

    If your going to put your boat on the hard or in a marina in Florida for hurricanes, go up to the palm coast! Elevation is higher than south Florida, I believe it’s part of the continent rather than sand bar like south Florida. I think it’s around 24’ and up a above? I’m looking at moving to that area myself, getting a boat once I’m there, and using it as my base to sail the Caribbean. My mother and step father live down in the Palm Beach Gardens area, he is a native Floridian, been a police officer, and this was the first Hurricane he was truly ever worried about. I don’t remember ever seeing one sit in almost static position like that? Scary stuff, glad you two kids are ok and Soulianis made it through!

      I would check to see if the coast guard, border patrol, Ice, or the US Navy is taking donations as they are boots on the ground helping directly! If you want your donations to actually get to those in need, nothing better than those who are committed to actually helping like those groups listed. There may be US Army and Marines there by now as well? I have heard that a man in Florida bought 50,000 dollars worth of generators, along with other donations of chainsaws, food, and is organizing local boats from fishermen, cruisers, charters to take supplies over as they want things to actually get to those in need.

      Yup, this was the second, although in truth, he can't be blamed for the first UNLESS of course he has some type of instrument or gauge that indicates the centerboard is not fully retracted.

      Technically the third. But the second time was done on purpose, when our engine died to prevent us from drifting down the river. And to be fair, Lauren did bump the bottom while we were in Gulf Port... so I guess I've got one on her :) -Kirk

    You guys should consider purchasing a Hydro generator. I know they increase boat drag, but when underway your batteries can be replenished.

    I wonder if your alternator has a burnt diode? except for that, I have always thought alternators had plenty of power. You could call the local auto parts store, make sure they have a replacement in stock, and then push your alternator to the max and see how much heat it can tolerate. A smaller pulley would also generate more power at lower engine speed, and maybe spin the cooling fins faster.

    You guys are awesome! Keep going! You’re right on the mark. The more you relax into it and knit sail time with continent time the more discoveries you’ll find.
    BTW, as a producer note (strictly opinion) I find I’m more glued to these videos when you’re addressing the camera rather than collaging pretty pictures. I think I’ve been awash of pretty beach/ocean pictures in hallmark stores. I’m tuned in to be part of your experience.
    All the best to your family 🤘🏽

    Great video guys,can't help but be overwhelmed with sadness for hurricane victims,the more sailing I watch,it drives it right home to me.Don't see hurricane activity in Australia,so sitting here insulated in a bubble until cruisers show this footage.
    I hope at some point soon,you will be able to get your solar installation complete,was wondering how you came out financially after that other nightmare?Best wishes🙂

      Oh really, no tropical storms even way up north in OZ? We filed a complaint with the BBB and consulted a lawyer, but ended up cutting our losses. The likelihood of getting anything back was low, and not worth the effort. We’ve put it behind us.

      Sailing Soulianis ,guys there are tropical storms,and”cyclones” up north,sometimes quite bad,but not as bad as hurricanes.
      Thanks for your reply,all the best☺️

    Love the Firefly batteries, really difficult to get outside the states at the moment though. We're currently in Europe and sticking with our AGM's, but with 650watts of solar and a decent alternator (Balmar) rarely have to resort to the generator. Keeping the laptops charged for editing is a bigger issue than most people would think. Just make sure you have 12v chargers for everything, cameras, laptops, ipads etc. charging via inverters will kill you!

    • @SailingSoulianis
      @SailingSoulianis  5 лет назад

      It absolutely is. Laptops and the fridge suck us dry so quickly. We have 420w of solar which is enough for our needs. We just needed it out in the sun to make it work. :)

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle 5 лет назад

      Sailing Soulianis I’m sure you know this but do watch out there’s a real difference between rated power and actual output from solar unless you can get absolutely no shadows (v. difficult on a sail boat!) & important to get the wiring right to maximise power. You may find you need more than you think. I produced a video on fitting solar... ruclips.net/video/-R3rTZDzmGQ/видео.html might be worth a look as it was a DIY stainless frame as well, what the hell happened with the construction of your frame?

    A lot of boaters hang the solar panels off the rails near the rear of the boat and they can be raised up and adjusted to follow the Sun and then when you're sailing and you don't want them out you can just flip and write down flat against the the side of the boat and go on you should look into that

    I'm continually impressed by your guys' video quality and narrative engagement. Beautiful piece of work! I thought the sunset shots at 11:00 were absolutely stunning, and one of my favorite parts of the video was seeing you talk near the end. It really gave me a "scene" moment as opposed to the "summary" style if that makes sense. More of a present feeling than a progressive movement through time, and I thought that was cool. I hope your guys' video job in Utah goes good! Not sure if it's happened yet or not, but either way good luck!
    P.S. I was talking to my brother who has a dream to buy a sailboat and live on it. We were pondering ideas and just dreaming up some pretty cool possibilities. He mentioned this one sailing channel, and then I told him about YOU GUYS and we realized we were talking about the same channel haha! You guys are awesome! What's the best way I can support you guys if I'm a college kid on financial aid :)? I've already followed all the social media and told a handful of people about your channel. Any other ideas?
    Best,
    Neal

    Try the Green Cove Springs Marina for cheapest. About 20 miles from Augustina. I have a 44ft on the hard there. I never moved it because I was told it is the cheapest in Florida. Can't say too much about the rest of it.

    So glad you guys are safe! Loved the video. You guys seem to find all the best stuff, but if you need an alternator recommendation just let me know. We replaced our 45 year old alternator with a new one (35amp) that seems to be bullet proof (I hooked it up wrong and thought I fried the rectifier but it’s still good!)
