In 1972 I was flying from Norfolk Va. to Pittsburgh sitting next to a guy carrying a briefcase. We talked a bit, and I noticed a small brass plaque on the briefcase "Bread". I asked him what that meant. He said it was his band, who all were also on the flight. He shook my hand and told me he was David Gates. I was a music major in college at the time, and of course recognized 'the name' although I didn't recognize him. He was very nice and we talked 'music' for much of the flight. I doubt he would remember this meeting, but I will never forget it as he was the only 'famous' person I have ever met in my 70+ years.
Yeah! Wonderful! I used to float on this music every day in the ‘70s. I was home from Vietnam, married to a beautiful, brown eyed Mexican American girl, and life was wonderful!
That second voice sung by James is poetry in itself RIP The three deceased members of this great band. Mike Botts Larry knechtel and James griffin Mr gates still among us I believe he’s 83 by now salute and respect to you Sir.
Certainly a good band in his own MOR niche, but to say the "greatest band ever" is unheard of....I'll assure you they won't ever be inducted into the RRHF...not that I don't think they deserve it.
The 70's was it as far as world class song writers, musicians, and performers go. We have often discussed this among friends and fellow musicians in light of the mundane racket on the airwaves today. It was a MINDSET that produced this kind of legendary artistic compositions. There was a standard of musical excellence, beauty, technique etc. which is been abandoned by the talent mocking buffoons of today. And some of the stuff I've heard on the radio lately is insulting that it reminds me of some kind of initiation into a mental health clinic. I'm convinced that no one will be able to rival this kind of phenomenal music the next 1000 years!
Totally agree Kim, u kno we wuld never see Olivia Newton John or Nicolette Larson sitting on a wrecking ball naked to score a hit!! The stuff u hear today is shiittt
This songs brings back memories of my childhood from the day I was adopted by my late parents. Both my father and mother shower me with lots of love. Eventhough both had passed away peacefully many years ago till today I still remember missed them in my heart and I know one day I'll see them again and this time I'll tell them again I Love Them Both So Much ❤
God bless you Ricky. What a wonderful thing to write about your parents. I have a wonderful son whom I love dearly. He's about 42 years old now and hasn't seen me for years. Doesn't want anything to do with me. So hard to understand, and such a terrible pain to live with.
Incredible track, David Gates had a genius in crafting a spellbinding tune, and had a phenomenal voice, like an angel. I remember seeing a few women customers transfixed and humming along when this song came on the supermarket radio where I worked, some forgetting where they were and even wiping away tears back in the early 80s! It was so unusual to see such reaction to a golden oldie in a superstore for heaven’s sake! Everyone whistles or hums along to favourite songs, but not like that, I’ve never seen random public reaction to songs from any group like that since.
I remember hearing this song on the radio at the age of 6. My parents marriage still had two more unhappy years to run, and school entailed simple lessons and occasionally going AWOL to hide in the coat trolley. I had sandwiches for lunch with Penguin biscuits, and I remember the smell of Tarmac as the workmen fixed the potholes in the playground. We painted a lot, and used marker pens which reeked and didn't come off. One of the teachers had the soundtrack of The Good The Bad And The Ugly and played it after assembly. Good times.
This song brings back memories of driving around St. Louis in the seventies. Maybe my thinking was more black and white, but life seemed simpler and more hopeful back then!
I just cnt get enuf of this song, man it reminds me of someone special to me n the feelings will always stay strong n dear to my heart, miss her alot!!
A much under-rated band. Growing up in the 1970's in Shillong, a town in North East India, this band was a staple diet for the music hungry of those times!
#Bread #ThankYou for Your #softrock #70sMusic And I recall liking Your Music #BackinMyDay 41 Years ago as a Kid #DavidGates #JamesGriffen & Co. #bread Sincerely Always,Dave Minnesota
Our hair was goofy and now were all old..you mix this with mowtown and this really something we have left as a gift for the future to understand how growing up in the 60's and 70's was all about!
Me too, 1972 I was 17 years old...In a year I was in the United States Marine Corps. But at 17 yrs old was great age, no worries, dating the girls and having a great time.

Sounds like it. Thanks for your service.
I still get a lump in my throat hearing this song.
I love how David and James blend together. It's so beautiful.
it's a good blend because on the record, David is doing both voices
Lyp-synching

ITS NOT UNDERRATED IN ASIA

Everything David Gates wrote is a mastetpiece
I Agree!
Saw David Gates perform live back in 2000 he still sounded excellent. Bread were one of the early 70's best soft rock bands.
Greatest band ever. Timeless and classic.. met my wife at a Bread concert
So sweet both of you sir!
Certainly a good band in his own MOR niche, but to say the "greatest band ever" is unheard of....I'll assure you they won't ever be inducted into the RRHF...not that I don't think they deserve it.
It's amazing that my friend...
I bet you have every one of their albums. Happy marriage. Blessings for a happily ever after.

I was adopted also and this brings me back to times we went camping when I was a kid and I heard this while meeting people
Bread especially James Griffin never got the praise they really deserve. They were the best. Rest in peace James. You left us to soon.

So so sad
What a beautiful voice he had!
@@kroakie4 Sweet Voice! IT makes me cry! I LOVE BREAD! MISS THEM! 07/02/2021, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRASIL! 💚💛💚💛💚💛💚💛❤❤❤
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written with equally as beautiful music.
Next to Aubrey
Hello yeah it is ,there's a special person that I hope she thinks of me as I do her everytime I hear it on the radio
Such a God given, extraordinary voice, so beautiful
that voice !!!
David Gates writes the most beautiful soft music of the 70s: he dominated the industry. And yet some critics scoff at his lyrics. Shame on them!
When did critics do anything of worth ?
Well said Petr, agree totally!
Sour grapes. Those people don’t know how to write music let alone beautiful melodies.
Que hermosa musica
Yeah babay!
Listening to Bread reminds me of what a great childhood I really had. I sure miss those days and music.
Me too, sounds like Im a little older I was 17 yrs old kid dating the girls and having a great time.
The summer breeze so gentle and free, when this music played. Life seemed quite amazing.
All of their songs have such a sweetness about them...not saccharin or overly-sentimental. Just sweet and poignant. I love them so much!!!
Bread songs are very sentimental to me. Melancholy in brief doses can be cathartic. Memories are the sweetest pain. ❤
One of the most recognizable guitar solos in the history of pop music.
Nothing like today. This was real music.
" You're the only one I care enough to hurt about." Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Finally men wore their hearts on their sleeves..
David Gates had an extraordinary voice . I bought all of Breads albums , even sent to the USA for one of them
This song brought me back to those innocent days.
Oh 😮 I just found this gem was 20 years old now 68 and can’t stop crying best years ever thanks 🤩
Actually this song came out in 1971. So it is 50 years old now and still one of the best songs.
SAME HERE BRO.THOSE WERE THE DAYS MAN.PEACE BRO❤
How can anyone not like Bread and their sublime songs? Just so beautiful!
I sure miss the good old days It would be nice to be young again

I was a teen in 1972 and had no idea Bobby Darin had a television show. BTW, I love Bread.
Great song, I still have my Ovation guitar (just like his) that I bought in'72!
I used to have this album in the early 70's. Great music
I got this record from my dad. It was in his collection. Really good stuff!!
Thanks to oldies stations still on the AM & FM & the internet. We 50 somethings get to hear good music. Have to sing a long with this.
when I was a kid, never thought I would still love this music. Glad I grew up in the singer/songwriter era.
There's a clip of David on American Bandstand singing "" Goodbye Girl" in 78'. "Took The Last Train" I remember on the radio back in the day.

Oh that voice is always haunting me since in the 70's 'till now! Timeless!
Esse guitarrista era bom demais. Tipo o George Harrison para os Beatles (What a guitar solo! The guitar man).
Such a tremendous musical icon. So nice to hear this again. Thanks for uploading.
My favourite band. Still play their songs while I clean!

Absolute classic!
I loved the 70's and 80's bands and songwriters, you'd get a real good vibe from the music instead of a headache from the current noise called music.
Linda apresentação! Que música maravilhosa! Não me canso de ouvir.
