  • If you are planning a visit to Portland Maine then you will enjoy this Virtual tour. In the video I start in the Old Port of Portland down by the weather Front. The exact location is the Regency Hotel. I then go to Dimello Restaurant and have some seafood. I then walk Congress Street and also go out to Cape Elizabeth and head over to Fort Washington. Also featured in this video is a cruise ship ported in Portland where I then walk towards the Eastern Promenade.

    It's amazing how much prettier New England towns are than towns in the rest of the USA, on average. It's not that there aren't attractive places in the rest of the US, but in New England, prettiness and quaintness are the norms.

      The Us demolished their cities in favor of huge highway and car centric infrastructure. Even tho US cities have never witnessed war and destruction most of them were destroyed anyways.

    • @jaredkushner5024
      @jaredkushner5024 2 года назад +2

      @@RappelKarton No, it didn't. This is abjectly wrong. There were never entire cities that were "demolished" for "huge highways" and "car centric infrastructure", that is errant, anti-American BS - are you not watching a video of an American city with no huge highways? So is your comment not just an obvious f*cking lie?
      The alteration you should make to your comment is that some buildings (and, rarely, some market towns and city neighborhoods) were destroyed to make way for the construction of highways - but the same trend in automobile oriented transit construction occurred throughout Europe, where cities were also cut up (notably, London, Paris, Berlin, Birmingham, Manchester, Cologne, Munich, Amsterdam, etc) to make way for motorways.
      Other cities in the US sunbelt like Houston and Phoenix grew up in the age of the automobile and, for reasons relating to climate particularly, oriented their metropolitan construction around automobile transit.
      It is flat out false, however, to sit here and insult America's architectural and historical tradition by pretending like it doesn't exist, by ignoring it, and by slandering American cities in such ignorant, grossly generalized, utterly inaccurate historical terms. It's ignorant that you would single America out for this ridiculous slander when America has many more historically intact, significant cities than many other countries do, notably the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil...

    Portland is huge. Outside of the city proper there are very large residential areas. The area that this was filmed is known as the Old Port and downtown Portland. Portland has incredible history and if you're into old stone architecture Portland's West End has some of the best. Where the East end runs along the harbor you'll find Victorian ship captain's houses (some are now bread and breakfasts) overlooking a beautiful promenade.

    the buildings remind me a lot of my hometown of Brooklyn, NY. If you ever make it out there be sure to visit the historic neighborhoods of carrol gardens, cobble hill, brooklyn heights. It's a much more diverse city with many things to see. Red Hook is kind of a beach, seafood type vibe, bushwick is an older industrial neighborhood thats seen a lot of revival recently. Vinegar hill is a hidden historic area just east of DUMBO with many old row homes and cobble stone streets and prospect park is an unrivaled urban green space. So much to see in Brooklyn and the rest of New York for that matter. So many of the beautiful neighborhoods remain working class ethnic enclaves without turning into tourist destinations like you see in Boston's north end or I'm assuming in downtown Portland, MI. Such examples are Chinatown, Washington Heights, Bensonhurst, Flushing, Brighton Beach, Rockaway Queens, etc. Gentrification does exist but there are a lot of gems if you go off the beaten path....

    A suggestion if you ever want to visit again though: Make sure to stay away from tourist traps. The lobster you payed for in that restaurant was too expensive. Try buying one from the fishing piers and markets instead. Then go to a place called Susan's Fish and Chips. They will cook and fry anything you bring in yourself for dirt cheap, and the atmosphere is really fun. Theres also a tone more to do up the hill near the library besides the portland market house, and a few real maine looking streets you missed that's left of that tiny harbor. Make sure to steer away from the oldport otherwise and seek out the parks in upper Portland.

Downtown Portland has become much more attractive and accessible. Portland is a beautiful, small city with some big city problems. But the diversity and the overall generosity of the population makes up for any negatives. It's beautiful, and its Maine!

    I found the remarks about the backfill and cut stones of Portland in the beginning of the walk pretty odd: Island Hopper evidently didn't consider the cathedrals of Europe. Those stone masons built extraordinary cathedrals during the Medieval period. They were obviously exceptionally skilled craftsmen working with exceptionally skilled architects. If I were giving a walking tour I would also ask the employees at the libraries and historical societies about how things were accomplished in the 19th Century--not my Uber driver. Your Uber driver was incorrect. The back filled area is on the other side of the peninsula, known as Bayside. The city burned in the late 1700's. The British burnt it in the 1810's as part of that war. Most of the downtown area was built of brick.

    Most of the “perfectly cut” stuff from ancient history isn’t cut rocks, it’s ancient architecture covered in mud, silt, and volcanic ash from when the great flood hit, when the flood subsided it hardened over thousands of years and all the material.. wood, metals, etc ran out of it and it became a fossilized imprint of what it used to be. Anyone with the technology to cut rock perfectly that way would build things structurally with steel and concrete the way we do today. It’s either fossilized wood, steel, or ancient concrete pour.

    Little known factoid about Portland... There is a sushi place run by Chef Masa Miyake.
    Best sushi in the Solar System.
    Again, this is a fact, and it cannot be disputed.

    Audio levels are all over the place! You might want to eliminate narrating and shooting your own pieces! If you are going to walk and tape same time, might want to consider some 'steady cam' device, the bouncing picture made me sick after 30 seconds!......Found the 10 minute piece on cutting rocks so interesting? Please really? then; : "Goshguys this is really a great place to be....You got to come hereI" I couldn't watch anymore.....Sorry about this review (couldn't help myself!).
