Donner cut isn't terrible. But the Lester cut has a better flow despite it trying to weave the new footage with the old. Repowered scene here, I love cuz the quietness adds to the desperation. And when the music kicks up when the crystal lights up, GAWD I LOVE THAT!
@@kevintravers3988 I agree. It's like when your desperate, then winning the lottery, finally getting that job promotion, moving overseas to start a new life, and so on.
The things people pick apart are what makes this movie so great. It's so silver-age Superman. Clark just walks to the arctic sans his powers lol then the Deus Ex Machina crystal starts glowing. I love how wholesome it all is. Still the alpha and omega of super-heroism.
I think I know how he gets his powers back in this scene! I think it has to do with the chamber that the crystals go in. In this scene, the crystal chamber is all Black and dark. When Superman battles Zod, Non, and Ursa at The Fortress, when Luthor stabs Superman in the back, and tells Zod about the power-removing chamber, Luthor specifically says to Zod "The crystal activates the mechanism". You can then see that the crystal chamber is now all brightly Iight up with a Green light glowing inside it!! So, I believe that he took the Green crystal that Lois left in the snow, put it back into the mechanism-chamber, and this re-activated the crystal chamber, and restored his powers!!!!
For all its shortcomings, I think Superman II did two things better than the Donner cut: giving Lara-El prominence and this more subdued repowering scene.
Even when I was 4 I couldn't accept Clark Kent walking all the way to the North Pole without his powers (and, for that matter, him and Lois Lane driving from the North Pole in a car).
@@rao3704 That's what I was thinking, and what I thought I communicated with my comment. But if you meant that comment as an "I agree with you and this is why," thank you for that.
I think it was supposed to be a bluff, figuring he would do what he was told and not give up his powers for a human woman. But then Jor-El had to go through with it. His re-education worked too well, or Kal-El would have defied his father and just took-up with Lois, while not giving up his powers.
I love the music and the green color in this. When I was a kid I thought this part was AWESOME. I still do. Brandon South should do this before the CW CROSSOVERR.
For the first Superman (1978) I like the Richard Donner cut (Expanded Edition) better but, for Superman 2 (1980) I like the Richard Lester version better because, of this Re-powering scene in particular (best moment) and, as Superman starts flying back over to Metropolis, thundering in the sky when the newspapers start to blow over from the news-stand then, confronts General Zod.
I agree with you ! In the Donner cut of Superman 2, when Reeve/Superman was talking to Brando/Jor El about giving up his powers, and also later when he talked to Brando/Jor El and got his powers back Reeve looked a bit insecure and almost boyish in his performance as Superman. (Who wouldn't be at 25 years old acting against Brando?) But in the Lester version of Superman 2 when they reshot these 2 scenes, first with his mother and later this solo scene it was mesmerizing how mush more self confidence he showed. Reeve really had matured and grown into the part.
Nah, the scenes in _Superman II_ with Brando are epic; worth the price of admission. Afterwards it gives one something to think about, like Kal-El's the man now. Better than the last vision of Jor-El being a face on the cloud saying "It is forbidden."
"Father, if you can hear me, I failed. I failed you; I failed myself, and all humanity. I traded my birthright for a life of submission in a world that's now ruled by your enemies. There's nobody left to help them now -people of the world, not since I... FATHER!"
Prefer the report scene with Jor-el than just him finding the glow stick...as I saw it in the theater....Lois gets bacon to metropolis in those sky scraper boots via calling ahead from the diner and hops via a chopper- 1 proposed theory / edited script shot.
What kind of asshole truck driver leaves a man stranded in below freezing temperatures? That's possible death or serious injury. No wonder Superman fucked up that truck in Man Of Steel !
What always bugged me about this cafe scene was that this 6'4", 225 pound guy gets his arse handed to him by some slob of a trucker. It wouldn't be so one sided at all even being a guy who fights fair.
Might be Northern Alaska. That could be the truckers' route to Prudhoe Bay. Later in some versions the Arctic Patrol shows up to take the villains, and they sound American.
+mws755 Maybe she offered to drive him back but he refused feeling that he wants to walk back and think about how wrong he was to sacrifice himself as Superman.
And yet, Donner's story is far superior to Lester's story. Which is again...the most important part of filmmaking. Acting, directing, special effects, etc all are in service to the story on any film. No story, no movie. So once again, The Donner Cut, while not being perfect in many ways, has a far better story than Lester's. Do I need to explain it a third time, or do you get it now?
@burtonrules123 That was not Donner's intention. They were shooting both movies at the same time but had to postpone shooting II, in order to complete the first movie. Donner decided to use the ending of II, for the first movie instead. It had been his intention to create a new ending for the second movie - but was fired before he had a chance.
I like how Superman changes hair styles when he loses his powers. He goes from the slick back 1950's look to the bowl hair of the 70's . Nice touch
Theatrical Cut will always be the definitive Superman 2 for me

To not jor el this scene makes it exceptional, absolutely beautiful 😊
Jor El knew this would happen. That's why he planned for this contingency long ago. He left his son a backup of kryptonian energy. In the AI

I would consider those mistakes or weakenesses.
Nah i think lester version better politics aside as much as i appreciate richard donner@sandal_thong8631

That part needed a rewrite. Donner was asked about them leaving the Fortress and didn't have an answer.
Maybe they should've had Clark team up with Lex Luthor and travel to the Fortress of Solitude in his hot air balloon.

I was aware of how silly it was too, but like all silver-age material, how did Superman do it? He just did.
I was close to the same age. My problem even at that age was he's wearing just some pants and a members only jacket 😆😂
I think since he was still Kryptonian, he'd have the ability to absorb sunlight and eventually power back up, but it would take a long time.

He was lifting trucks after being exposed to our sunlight for a few minutes.
His parents even for saw that Clark might change his mind and want / need his powers back.
Great parents.
u know? i never thought of that

The best Superman!
The Biblical story of the Prodigal Son in cinema-so true to life. But they still never explain why his father restores all Superman's powers.
Because he asked him to. Because Kal-El was his son.
2:41 "IT'S A MIRACLE!" 😇😊
0:32 love that music.
well in Superman the Movie he managed to make it there when he was a teenager. In pretty much the same amount of clothes
He also had some of his powers then, too
He was human here so excuse me but what the hell did he survive on as a source of nutrition for his hike home. Snow???
The "perfect" movie script needed a re-write at that point (and others). Unless you figure he and Lois got a lift from the Arctic Patrol.

It also doesn't make sense how there was a car in the Fortress of solitude as well let alone a couch suddenly appearing.
Never mind that; how the hell did Lois get back to Metropolis so quickly?
She took a plane from wherever in Canada or Alaska they were.
They only showed him walking to the north pole
That could take years to get there just walking
So he must have gotten rides part of the way
I think he would have to be dressed a little warmer than that to walk to north pole
