Wow this scene even though its edited, it looks and feels so much better and more complete with having both of Superman's kryptonian parents present when he says to them that he wants to give up his powers to be with Lois. I always felt whenever I watched both versions of Superman 2 that an important moment like this needed to have both of them together as I always wondered what it would have been like to see their reaction towards their son giving up everything for a human. The back and forth emotional dialogue between everyone feels very powerful. I love it.
I’ve seen several versions of this scene that utilized both the Donner footage and the Lester Footage but this is truly the best combination of both worlds so to speak! The Donner footage had more powerful dialogue between Kal-El and Jor-El while the Lester footage had a much better transformation depowering scene. You sir have managed to capture the very best of both versions and blended them flawlessly into one! Truly epic and excellently executed! I just hope one day we get a version of Superman 2 that combines all of the best scenes form both directors into the Ultimate Cut of Superman 2! If only the egos of both directors can be set aside and if only Warner Brothers would look at the massive fan appeal for this to happen then we may one day get the version most fans have only dreamed of seeing!
The best combination of the Donner and Lester cuts I have scene. In the Donner version Christopher is wearing a white shirt and you have him back in costume. Excellent work
I like this. You have both Jor-El and Lara's views towards Clark's decision here. It was really a nice blending of the Donner and Lester cuts. In Donner's cut, it's pretty clear how pissed off Jor-El is towards his son, and you do see it here, but when you add Lara in, he's clearly trying to hold back his frustration more. Especially around Lois. Very well done.
Dude i have been following your edits over the years and its clear you're not done yet and it's worth the wait. I'm not dead yet but before i do ,nothing would please me more to see a complete cut in your vision because every little clip i see is just a tease of how great this movie can and will be with your skill.

Well done! This is a great edit. I've dreamed about a 4k release that integrates the very best of Donner's and Lester's footage, but stays true to Donner's vision to make an epic Superman II.

Margot Kiddar and Christopher Reeve were first and foremost good and decent people. Even though it is a movie, it is still possible to feel that it is two extraordinary people, a kind of innocence and beauty that is not so much found today. I pray that there will be a desire before our God to have their rest in heaven, and we will get to see them in the resurrection soon!
As a fan of the Reeve films since I was 9 years old I have to say I love this and I love the kryptonite sound effects from part 3 when Clark sacrifices his powers to be with Lois
I've gone and altered it again, I think it looks as good as it will be now, but there will be a slight difference as Reeve is caked in make-up in the scene. Check out the difference between his face and chest in the original shot, he has inch of foundation on.
Fingers crossed here too. It's all just a matter of time. Full time job, wife, kid, doesn't leave a great deal of time to get things done. 5 weeks of Covid lock-down meant I was able to work on the last bunch of clips , still a lot to do.

I would NEVER have let SuperMan make the decision to relinquish his powers. Even if and tho', it was "his", conscious decision. Just for me. I wouldn't/couldn't do that. Wouldn't want to bear that weight on my shoulders, heart, soul nor conscience.
I think you could've changed the backgrounds in the Donner shots of Superman to match the close-ups from the Lester shots, to keep a more consistent continuity.

Great moment when Jor-El looks to Lois and Lois to him, however, I would cut the first close-up of the mother and leave it to where her first close-up is when she starts talking because the shot used, in the first close-up, looks like a paused image and really sticks out.
This is really good and impressive work. If you don't mind me asking, how will the relationship between Lois and Clark be handled in this edit? I always liked the way Lester portrayed the relationship over the Donner version, but Donner had that cool scene where Lois uses blanks to draw out Clark's identity and that balcony break up (that should have been the real ending to the relationship, never liked the brainwashing kiss or the time travel).
I'll be adding in the scene where Lois sends Clark for a pizza but edited to remove all the memory confusion. Lois hasn't forgotten and she is having fun with Clark and teasing him a little. Her last line to Clark in the movie is "You know you're really super". Then we go to the bully at the elevator, the diner scene and finally the return of the Whitehouse flag.

@Booshman Did you ever consider making an ultimate Donner 4 hour epic where you combine Donners S1 & S2 into one film and you use the reversing the earth ONLY ONCE in part one or part two? Thats what WB should do imo. Release two versions of Donners story combined. One with the 45 second white house flag ending of S2 and an alternative where lois never dies in part 1 so the reversing earth in two works (honestly i prefer the reversing earth in two). After that WB should make an S2 ultimate cut like yours amd others have done for the non Donner purists.
I think 1 is fine as is. The time reversal only works because Lois dies, if she were to die at the end of 2 then it could be a way to go but with the footage available I don't think it's possible.
@@faneditedbybooshman I disagree. I love Superman The Movie (and i love the Lois dying scene) but Kal El isnt supposed to defy his father and interfere with human history til part 2 originally. The vast majority of S1 & S2 was filmed with the story heading toward Superman reversing earth in 2. So it definitely works. I'm sure you know they moved the ending and all that. When they did that they significantly sped up Supermans 2 film arc. Lois wasnt supposed to die at all. Superman doesnt become a fully formed mature Superman til the end of S2. S1 & S2 are essentially one giant origin story. It's not until Jor El dies & the Kryptonian Prophecy is complete that Superman truly becomes a "man." Once his father is gone Superman decides, because he is the father now, it is necessary, *just this once* to interfere with human history. So Superman spins the earth back for many reasons.... 1. Save the people Zod killed 2. Restore all cherished monuments worldwide 3. Put Zod, Ursa, Non back in the phantom zone where (his father, jor el decided) they belong 4. Wipe the memory for all of humanity so they dont suffer severe PTSD from the fear of almost being conquered by Zod. 5. Lastly to reset things for Lois so she doesn't have to live with the incredible heartbreak of her break up with Superman. That isnt supposed to happen until "the son becomes the father" which doesn't happen til Jor El dies. 6. Also Reset everything so a fully formed mature experienced Superman can start fresh now knowing what he knows and understanding his role along with what can happen if he loses focus of his mission. He made a terrible mistake that almost *doomed the entire world* which is why he felt it was necessary to reverse earth. Make sense? I think a lot of people miss some of that. Plus if you think about it its kinda weird Superman interfered with human history while Joe El is still alive. Also he isnt even in a relationship with Lois yet. Still though since they had to change it, i DO like what they did. Love it actually. Anyway i think u misunderstood me. Thats why i was saying Warner Bros should make TWO versions of a 4 hour Donner epic. Since Superman The Movie is beloved you have an official version where he reverses earth to save Lois as seen in S.T.M. then at the end of the 4 hour epic Superman returns the flag to the white house after the Diner (no magic kiss necessary). In the *2nd version of the 4 hour epic* fans get the story Donner *Originally intended* to tell had the salkinds not forced the ending change. So Lois never dies (another faneditor put this up a few months ago. Works great). Instead Superman reversess the earth at the conclusion of the 4 hour film for all the reasons i mentioned above as originally intended. This way fans get a *4 hour epic film* and also an alternative version of a *4 hour superman epic as originally conceived & intended to be filmed.* Plus if Warner did all this they could still release a hybrid cut of Superman 2 for the NON DONNER purists that want the paris scene in 2 and the screen test scene out. So Warner bros could triple dip and make a fortune selling.... 1. Richard Donners Superman epic 2. Richard Donners Superman epic (as originally conceived and intended to be filmed) 3 *Superman 2 Hybrid cut* of both directors for the fans that like the Lester footage (I'm in the minority as i only like about 30 seconds of Lester footage that id put into Donners 2. "Care to step outside & white house flag scene). This way they can sell two versions of Donners vision while also fixing S2 for the Lester fans
@@integrity101 I think you misunderstand me. I see your point from the way it was conceived, but I'm talking about what is possible to do with what they shot and have footage for. The time reversal works for 1 since they shot it that way but to place it at the end of 2 there would need be the emotional beat before he goes back. The super scream works great as they have it and to use it in 2 would probably need to have be Lois killed somehow. I think the 4 hour version you mention would work as a movie, I just doubt it could be made with the footage they have.

It would play out *exactly as S2 Donner.* No changes (the only change is removing Lois death from STM. That 3 minute scene is removed. Lois doesnt die, no earth reversal). The emotional beat is there with Lois already because they can never be together which is one of the many reasons why he reverses the earth in part 2. Its for the whole world, not just Lois. Superman is visibly upset at the end there. Anyway i thought it would be a cool way for WB to make a lot more money on Reeve/Superman while also giving fans options without disrespecting Donners vision (ideally we'd want his blessing). Technically the one tweak would be adding the Jor El line up in the clouds to the earth reversal in 2. So the Richard Donner cut of S2 ends exactly how it already ends but because that film represents the film as *originally conceived and intended to be filmed* theyd have to change Superman The Movie to be as *originally conceived and intended to be filmed* to match up with it. that's why Lois dying/earth spin gets deleted from S1. This way the earth spin happens once, not twice. Get it? So it is two versions of a 4hr Donner film (Donner 1 + Donner 2 combined). In one version the earth spin is deleted from S1 & in the other version the earth spin is deleted from 2. So no new footage is needed. See what I'm saying?
@@integrity101 Yeah I get you, and I think they ending of the Donner Cut really doesn't work for me, they clearly didn't have the footage to work with. In concept had it been shot that way sure, but as is I don't care for it. I think taking out Lois' death from 1 would be detrimental, do you have the clip to the video you mentioned so I can have a look.

Beautiful work Boosh. Do you plan on using Lois' "gasp" reaction shot in this? Also, may I suggest a slight color change to Jor-el's head/face? It seems like Thau gave the gray a hint of color to it and doesn't quite match how it looked in the first film.
I didn't even realise it wasn't there, I've put it back in. I must have moved it for whatever reason and forgotten about it. It easily fits where it should go, so expect it in the final edit. I've altered Jor-El's head, good suggestion.
You did an excellent job of using footage from Donner & Lester film and great edit and I wish you could an alternate opening to both Terminator films and do like a extended opening to T1 (Genisys) and extended opening for T2 by using T2 promo trailer + Genisys and maybe change ending of T2 to the future war scene which I wish the movie could've end at that point sorta a sequel bait type of deal i wish James Cameron could've just do a redit of both films and maybe add some scenes to recut versions of both films but stuck with them anyway and as For Donner he went back and do some recut to both films and that take guts
This rule is so stupid and it's not like they can make him give up his superpowers, so, why the hell does he?! There's no good reason why he can't both be Superman and be with Lois! An ideal fan edit of 'Superman 2' would get rid of this plot point, the memory-erasing kiss, and Zod, Ursa, & Non having telekinesis, and an ideal fan edit of 'Superman'[1978](AKA 'Superman: The Movie') would get rid of Lois's death & Superman going back in time!
I'm thinking back then, it was an idea being explored as in past versions of Superman, Lois never really found out. At least officially. It was always a "what if".
Only thing Michael Thau did wrong is not amplify Brando's voice as Jor-El in these scenes, it doesn't echo enough in a Fortress this large or have a reverb in the tone or pitch given the hologram of Jor-El is suppose to be huge. Brando voice was too weak sounding in the Richard Donner cut of the movie sadly I guess its the audio, fan editors like yourself have to always think about and engage whenever redoing S:TM and S2. Also when Superman is in the chamber you could've kept the shot of the animation, where we see the red sun rays strip away his flesh. And we see his insides and the cellular process of the chamber striping him of his abilities is taking place, so the audio matches the visual representation as we're seeing it happen before our eyes. Or do you plan on enhancing any of the Richard Lester VFX shots with something else in mind for your cut instead?
I think there's plenty Thau could have done better. Since the Donner cut was done on the cheap and with a time constraint of the 2006 boxed set I can cut him some slack. I bet there were better takes that could have been used in this scene and throughout the Donner Cut, I just don't think he's that good of an editor and they needed someone with the experience for the project. I guess Stuart Baird was out if their price range. I removed the vfx for the chamber as I thought they look a bit shit, no plan to replace them. For the audio I will be matching the audio of the Donner Cut to the theatrical. So low bass hum in the background and echo added to the voices in the correct channels.

You know I actually wanted to come an ask someone to make a defensive version of the film by using both of the cuts. Wouldn’t you believe it I found someone doing that.
If you make another branching link in your fan-edit and feature just Clark in his clothes talking to Jor-El from the Donner cut? remember to make Clark's shoes black in the aftermath of the powerloss with Lois after he walks out of the chamber. In Donner's scene with Jor-El, Clark's shoes are dark black, Lester filmed Clark with Lois with light brown shoes instead as he walks up to her? So its an error of sorts somewhat. just thought you should know. I've gotta fix that when i make an edit of my own, i always keep this in mind as a mental note etc's whenever thinking of cut & pasting the scenes together for editing purposes!

All i'm saying is, if you use some digital tricks just make his shoes stay black is all. This way no continuity jumps so nothing stands out as being odd etc's. Just a suggestion is all dude, anyways stay safe.
I like what you've done in this fan edit, however it doesn't really make sense for both parents to be there considering we don't see both of them in the first movie. And that Jor-El only embedded himself on the crystal, and not his mother. Also, Jor El remains a floating head and not a being inside of a crystal (I saw your Lex Luthor Jor-El fan edit).

Great moment when Jor-El looks to Lois and Lois to him, however, I would cut the first close-up of the mother and leave it to where her first close-up is when she starts talking because the shot used, in the first close-up, looks like a paused image and really sticks out.

This is really good and impressive work. If you don't mind me asking, how will the relationship between Lois and Clark be handled in this edit? I always liked the way Lester portrayed the relationship over the Donner version, but Donner had that cool scene where Lois uses blanks to draw out Clark's identity and that balcony break up (that should have been the real ending to the relationship, never liked the brainwashing kiss or the time travel).
I'll be adding in the scene where Lois sends Clark for a pizza but edited to remove all the memory confusion. Lois hasn't forgotten and she is having fun with Clark and teasing him a little. Her last line to Clark in the movie is "You know you're really super". Then we go to the bully at the elevator, the diner scene and finally the return of the Whitehouse flag.

Did you ever consider making an ultimate Donner 4 hour epic where you combine Donners S1 & S2 into one film and you use the reversing the earth ONLY ONCE in part one or part two?
Thats what WB should do imo. Release two versions of Donners story combined. One with the 45 second white house flag ending of S2 and an alternative where lois never dies in part 1 so the reversing earth in two works (honestly i prefer the reversing earth in two).
After that WB should make an S2 ultimate cut like yours amd others have done for the non Donner purists.
I think 1 is fine as is. The time reversal only works because Lois dies, if she were to die at the end of 2 then it could be a way to go but with the footage available I don't think it's possible.

I disagree. I love Superman The Movie (and i love the Lois dying scene) but Kal El isnt supposed to defy his father and interfere with human history til part 2 originally. The vast majority of S1 & S2 was filmed with the story heading toward Superman reversing earth in 2. So it definitely works. I'm sure you know they moved the ending and all that. When they did that they significantly sped up Supermans 2 film arc. Lois wasnt supposed to die at all. Superman doesnt become a fully formed mature Superman til the end of S2. S1 & S2 are essentially one giant origin story. It's not until Jor El dies & the Kryptonian Prophecy is complete that Superman truly becomes a "man." Once his father is gone Superman decides, because he is the father now, it is necessary, *just this once* to interfere with human history. So Superman spins the earth back for many reasons....
1. Save the people Zod killed
2. Restore all cherished monuments worldwide
3. Put Zod, Ursa, Non back in the phantom zone where (his father, jor el decided) they belong
4. Wipe the memory for all of humanity so they dont suffer severe PTSD from the fear of almost being conquered by Zod.
5. Lastly to reset things for Lois so she doesn't have to live with the incredible heartbreak of her break up with Superman. That isnt supposed to happen until "the son becomes the father" which doesn't happen til Jor El dies.
6. Also Reset everything so a fully formed mature experienced Superman can start fresh now knowing what he knows and understanding his role along with what can happen if he loses focus of his mission. He made a terrible mistake that almost *doomed the entire world* which is why he felt it was necessary to reverse earth. Make sense? I think a lot of people miss some of that.
Plus if you think about it its kinda weird Superman interfered with human history while Joe El is still alive. Also he isnt even in a relationship with Lois yet. Still though since they had to change it, i DO like what they did. Love it actually.
Anyway i think u misunderstood me. Thats why i was saying Warner Bros should make TWO versions of a 4 hour Donner epic. Since Superman The Movie is beloved you have an official version where he reverses earth to save Lois as seen in S.T.M. then at the end of the 4 hour epic Superman returns the flag to the white house after the Diner (no magic kiss necessary).
In the *2nd version of the 4 hour epic* fans get the story Donner *Originally intended* to tell had the salkinds not forced the ending change. So Lois never dies (another faneditor put this up a few months ago. Works great). Instead Superman reversess the earth at the conclusion of the 4 hour film for all the reasons i mentioned above as originally intended.
This way fans get a *4 hour epic film* and also an alternative version of a *4 hour superman epic as originally conceived & intended to be filmed.*
Plus if Warner did all this they could still release a hybrid cut of Superman 2 for the NON DONNER purists that want the paris scene in 2 and the screen test scene out.
So Warner bros could triple dip and make a fortune selling....
1. Richard Donners Superman epic
2. Richard Donners Superman epic (as originally conceived and intended to be filmed)
3 *Superman 2 Hybrid cut* of both directors for the fans that like the Lester footage (I'm in the minority as i only like about 30 seconds of Lester footage that id put into Donners 2. "Care to step outside & white house flag scene).
This way they can sell two versions of Donners vision while also fixing S2 for the Lester fans
@@integrity101 I think you misunderstand me. I see your point from the way it was conceived, but I'm talking about what is possible to do with what they shot and have footage for. The time reversal works for 1 since they shot it that way but to place it at the end of 2 there would need be the emotional beat before he goes back. The super scream works great as they have it and to use it in 2 would probably need to have be Lois killed somehow. I think the 4 hour version you mention would work as a movie, I just doubt it could be made with the footage they have.

We arent on the same page. I think we are getting closer tho. Probably my fault for not being clear. I see what u mean but we wouldnt move the scream to 2. It would play out *exactly as S2 Donner.* No changes (the only change is removing Lois death from STM. That 3 minute scene is removed. Lois doesnt die, no earth reversal). The emotional beat is there with Lois already because they can never be together which is one of the many reasons why he reverses the earth in part 2. Its for the whole world, not just Lois. Superman is visibly upset at the end there.
Anyway i thought it would be a cool way for WB to make a lot more money on Reeve/Superman while also giving fans options without disrespecting Donners vision (ideally we'd want his blessing).
Technically the one tweak would be adding the Jor El line up in the clouds to the earth reversal in 2.
So the Richard Donner cut of S2 ends exactly how it already ends but because that film represents the film as *originally conceived and intended to be filmed* theyd have to change Superman The Movie to be as *originally conceived and intended to be filmed* to match up with it. that's why Lois dying/earth spin gets deleted from S1. This way the earth spin happens once, not twice. Get it?
So it is two versions of a 4hr Donner film (Donner 1 + Donner 2 combined). In one version the earth spin is deleted from S1 & in the other version the earth spin is deleted from 2.
So no new footage is needed. See what I'm saying?
@@integrity101 Yeah I get you, and I think they ending of the Donner Cut really doesn't work for me, they clearly didn't have the footage to work with. In concept had it been shot that way sure, but as is I don't care for it. I think taking out Lois' death from 1 would be detrimental, do you have the clip to the video you mentioned so I can have a look.

Beautiful work Boosh. Do you plan on using Lois' "gasp" reaction shot in this? Also, may I suggest a slight color change to Jor-el's head/face? It seems like Thau gave the gray a hint of color to it and doesn't quite match how it looked in the first film.
I didn't even realise it wasn't there, I've put it back in. I must have moved it for whatever reason and forgotten about it. It easily fits where it should go, so expect it in the final edit.
I've altered Jor-El's head, good suggestion.

You did an excellent job of using footage from Donner & Lester film and great edit and I wish you could an alternate opening to both Terminator films and do like a extended opening to T1 (Genisys) and extended opening for T2 by using T2 promo trailer + Genisys and maybe change ending of T2 to the future war scene which I wish the movie could've end at that point sorta a sequel bait type of deal i wish James Cameron could've just do a redit of both films and maybe add some scenes to recut versions of both films but stuck with them anyway and as For Donner he went back and do some recut to both films and that take guts

This rule is so stupid and it's not like they can make him give up his superpowers, so, why the hell does he?! There's no good reason why he can't both be Superman and be with Lois! An ideal fan edit of 'Superman 2' would get rid of this plot point, the memory-erasing kiss, and Zod, Ursa, & Non having telekinesis, and an ideal fan edit of 'Superman'[1978](AKA 'Superman: The Movie') would get rid of Lois's death & Superman going back in time!
I'm thinking back then, it was an idea being explored as in past versions of Superman, Lois never really found out. At least officially. It was always a "what if".

This was one aspect of Superman in the Post-crisis canon that was great. He didn't need to choose between his powers and love.

Only thing Michael Thau did wrong is not amplify Brando's voice as Jor-El in these scenes, it doesn't echo enough in a Fortress this large or have a reverb in the tone or pitch given the hologram of Jor-El is suppose to be huge. Brando voice was too weak sounding in the Richard Donner cut of the movie sadly I guess its the audio, fan editors like yourself have to always think about and engage whenever redoing S:TM and S2. Also when Superman is in the chamber you could've kept the shot of the animation, where we see the red sun rays strip away his flesh. And we see his insides and the cellular process of the chamber striping him of his abilities is taking place, so the audio matches the visual representation as we're seeing it happen before our eyes. Or do you plan on enhancing any of the Richard Lester VFX shots with something else in mind for your cut instead?
I think there's plenty Thau could have done better. Since the Donner cut was done on the cheap and with a time constraint of the 2006 boxed set I can cut him some slack. I bet there were better takes that could have been used in this scene and throughout the Donner Cut, I just don't think he's that good of an editor and they needed someone with the experience for the project. I guess Stuart Baird was out if their price range. I removed the vfx for the chamber as I thought they look a bit shit, no plan to replace them. For the audio I will be matching the audio of the Donner Cut to the theatrical. So low bass hum in the background and echo added to the voices in the correct channels.

If you make another branching link in your fan-edit and feature just Clark in his clothes talking to Jor-El from the Donner cut? remember to make Clark's shoes black in the aftermath of the powerloss with Lois after he walks out of the chamber. In Donner's scene with Jor-El, Clark's shoes are dark black, Lester filmed Clark with Lois with light brown shoes instead as he walks up to her? So its an error of sorts somewhat. just thought you should know. I've gotta fix that when i make an edit of my own, i always keep this in mind as a mental note etc's whenever thinking of cut & pasting the scenes together for editing purposes!
The branch with just Brando will have him in white shirt and pants throughout.

All i'm saying is, if you use some digital tricks just make his shoes stay black is all. This way no continuity jumps so nothing stands out as being odd etc's. I like what you've done in this fan edit, however it doesn't really make sense for both parents to be there considering we don't see both of them in the first movie. And that Jor-El only embedded himself on the crystal, and not his mother. Also, Jor El remains a floating head and not a being inside of a crystal (I saw your Lex Luthor Jor-El fan edit).
The version of the scene will be optional, either just the father or the mother or a combination which is the version here.
