ABC's prensentation of the legendary Christopher reeve Superman movies were a real treat to Superman fans, and these deleted scenes are the definitive reason why!!!
...And it ties in better with him (confidently) cooking Lois' duck in Superman IV. Without the soufflé scene, it's just something he does; with the soufflé scene, it's a deliberate reference to II that would have had audience members smirking, probably...
Friendly reminder that Richard Donner directed most of these scenes. I guess you could say ABC did him a favor by making the film slightly closer to his intentions.
@puterboy2 how did lex get inside the fortress? Wasn't their a barrier? I remember zod trying to get in & the fortress shield stop zod.before all 3 went in together to break the barrier
Some people grew up watching the network version and hated the theatrical. I grew up watching the theatrical on HBO, and when I saw all this added stuff on ABC, I was like…WTF am I watching here??!! It felt like a different movie.
I remember all these. I had recorded the show on our VCR. Used to watch this version all the time. Weird that a film edited for TV would be longer than the theatrical cut.
These deleted scenes are great well acted and i remember them all from when channel 7 aired superman 2 on a Sunday in 1985. With part 1 and part 2 of deleted scenes included the running time should be about 2 hours and 35 minutes? I wouldn't mind seeing a restored version of superman 2 this one here superman 3 and maybe superman 4. If superman the 1st one can get the treatment i believe the other 3 movies will too. It would have been nice if Richard Donner had directed all 4 movies.
I wish that Warner Bros would release this 1984 television broadcast on blu ray/streaming like they did to the 188 minute version of Superman the Movie
The Richard Donner Cut is an unfinished and unpolished look at his version if the Salkinds hadn't screwed everything up and fired him. Originally, there was a different ending to "Superman: The Movie" and the turn back time sequence was to be in Superman II. The only good things the Donner Cut is for are the deleted Marlon Brando scenes and a few extended Metropolis fight sequences.
I realise now that in this movie, and even in the firts Superman, what I've always liked most are the comic scenes between Lex, Ms Teshmaker and Otis (and Lois also).
The production became an absolute mess after the Salkinds fired Richard Donner. There were warring factions and a lot of bad blood on the set. Everyone loved Donner, except the lousy producers.
I had remembered especially seeing the scene at 11:14 as a little kid and always wondered WHAT happened to it or if I had imagined it for years. Then, I saw it once again on the internet and I do understand why Richard Lester decided to omit it. He most likely thought it was too violent, like the scenes with Zod shooting people in the White House. I do know that Richard Lester went more for "humor" and kid friendliness, where Donner wanted it to be more serious and have more of an edge to it. I just wish that Richard Donner had been allowed to finish it HIS way to begin with. I think it would have been brilliant. It is a shame that we have to watch two versions of the same movie to get everything now...
Donner's version did set up the villains as being vicious better. Lester's edition is good, but Donner was on the right track. The style of 1 and (most of) 2 would have benefitted 3, which clearly turned off viewers. 😢
Interesting that Jack OHalloran said in a recent interview that he believed when he shot that scene (of him throwing the siren), it was to destroy a car, not to kill the kid on horseback.
Gene hackman will always be the ultimate Lex luther! Everything about the Christopher reeve Superman movies were better, the Superman, the Lex luthor and of course the iconic music by John williams, Ken thorne and Alexander courage!
An excellent decision to have cut these awful scenes. They were either badly written, or silly, or in the case of the killed British kid a well spoken British kid in Houston? it's possible but a ridiculous scene, even the scene where he says, "please don't hurt my daddy" in a posh English accent.
I always thought that kid spoke funny and didn’t understand why. I agree most of these added scenes are bad, like cutting room floor type stuff. Now there is a saying you don’t hear anymore. Those omitted scene make for a tighter cut of the film.
Most were directed by Donner. He shot a lot then cut them from the final cut. Gene Hackman refused to do reshoots for Lester. So if Hackman's in the scene, then it was directed by Donner. Slapstick scenes were added by Lester.
I unfortunately grew up with this version as it showed 100% uncut in Australia back in like 84 on TV. We recorded it and watched it for many years till we recorded over it. Wish I kept it cause it was hard to watch any other version knowing what was missing.
They certainly help the story. I can't understand them being removed, especially Lois colouring in the newspaper and shooting Clark with a blank - she forgets it later with the amnesia kiss.

Those scenes with Mr. Hackman provide good “comic relief”.
😂Yes!
Don't forget Ms Teshmaker, definitely my favourite character un the Superman movies, with Lois Lane.
I like all those scenes. Hackman will always be the only Alex Luthor to me

2:28 Why did they dub Sarah's voice in the theatrical version when she sounds perfect here in her actual voice?
It’s her I think the director just wanted a different way of speaking
You can tell it's Annie Ross, cause in some scenes I always noticed Ursa sounds a lot like Vera in Superman 3!
