Oh no Olivia, I knew you'd make me teary again this week 🥺
Yeah, I don't know how I do it either. I'm happy by myself (and utterly disinterested in men, lol), but sometimes something happens that triggers me and reminds me that we're not meant to be by ourselves. Like moving or assembling furniture, as trite and trivial as that sounds. I don't have shelves on my walls or curtains because I couldn't do it by myself, and I cried like a baby the other day after it took me 2 hours to get my new coffee table out of its packaging (it was heavy and encased in a solid woodframe, a nightmare.) Earlier this year, different friends on different occasions praised me for living the life I chose (childfree and nomadic, at the cost of my relationship), and seemingly doing just fine. My younger friends think I'm some kind of role model and I hate that because yes, I do have a great life, but it was never supposed to be like this, that was never my plan. I was supposed to be forever with the man I loved, and now it's just me and it's almost like I jumped into an alternate universe where I've been single my entire life, as if the life I had before never existed, and yet that's all I ever knew. It's a bit hard to explain and I'm not sure where I'm going with this lol 😅But rest assured you're not doing worse than the average single/living alone person. In fact, I would argue you are doing GREAT. We don't see everything but we do see the evolution.
One thing that does wonders for my mental health and I would recommend is to not just to journal but do "morning pages". The goal is to do a brain dump, not avoiding expressing negative feelings but always focusing on the positive too. I tried a gratitude journal but couldn't sustain the forced positivity; this is the in-between version that did more for me than anything else, I believe, and I've tried pretty much everything. I always had a diary but this is different because it's purely meant to help you face the day ahead, and take each day at a time. The point is to pinpoint right away anything that troubles you and could be an obstacle to a good day, what you can do about it, and remind yourself of all the good things big and small. I always note down my mood as well, and I'm amazed to say I've been on a plain and boring "good" streak for longer that I have ever been. I know I will have downs again but it's inevitable so I focus on making good times last longer, and making bad times as short as possible. You already journal so this could maybe work well for you too.
You said last week you are doing better now, I hope it's still the case and I'm sending you lots of friendly vibes in any case ♥
How was the book, btw? I'm a big fan of Japanese fiction and cinema, this one is on my TBR.
Thanks for reading my little novel of the week :)

Hi Fany ❤️ I have to start off by saying your comment made me really happy, thanks for sharing about yourself and the challenges you're facing on such a personal level.
It's definitely nice to hear that I'm not alone with my struggles! And aww sending you a virtual hug!! The struggles of moving single! I definitely feel you with others praising/idolising your life - not to say that I wouldn't be grateful for everything that I have but as you know, it definitely has its challenges as well. I've always seen myself as a very independent person but after my breakup and being so used not being alone, it has definitely taken a lot of getting used to and in some ways learning to accept that I'm not as strong as I like to imagine myself to be. Sounds like you went through a massive life shift as well when you started your single life 🥺 Can empathise so so well ❤️
Hope you feel that you're on the right path despite everything xx
And thanks for sharing your tips on how you do your morning pages! Recently I've been making sure I have time for some mindfulness every morning but haven't been writing things down - your suggestion sounds like a great alternative :) Will have to try!
The book was great! Something about how it was written felt quite thought-provoking and the ending felt kind of plaintive. Would recommend!
Yes, currently feeling all the good energy! Sending lots of love your way 🫶

@@oliviaimamura Thanks. After reading that wall of text again, it feels like I'm making this too much about my own situation and myself maybe, when I was indeed trying to illustrate how I relate and how you shouldn't feel your struggles are abnormal or shameful. (I was also very impressed with all the typos, lol. Forgive me.)
I won't get into the details here but we actually broke up several years ago now, after spending 17 years together, joined at the hips (yes, you read that right.) It was a very long and painful grieving process for me especially. I've dated since but that too felt like part of the process, I never fell in love again. He's got 2 little girls now (didn't waste *any* time!!) It's only been a year since I've made peace with the loss, even though I'll always be sad about it. We're still close though, however weird that might sound. It was always the plan, to remain close, but it was HELL to get to a point where we are both at peace with the past and each other.
You are strong, it's obvious. Crying and feeling like you can't do it sometimes doesn't mean you aren't or you are not "as strong" as you thought. I think I followed you because I was impressed at the things you did for yourself after the break up, that looked to me as if you knew what was good for you and would help you not to drown in the heartbreak. I was like "who's that girl who plays violin and sings and does jam sessions in freaking TOKYO?" I don't really follow vloggers so I don't know why you popped up on my page but you struck a chord for sure :)
Btw I'm also a freelancer and also do digital marketing, lol. And I have a life-long relationship with Japan and East Asia. I'll be in Tokyo in October actually, if you feel like meeting up with a subscriber :)

I would hug you gently and say ‘It’s all right’. I understand how you feel. I never reach out to anyone in these kinds of situations, same reason.
And so - my cat calms me down, truly. That quiet companion who can say ‘It’ll be okay, you’re okay’ with just her eyes and a gentle touch. It’s insane how well she understands.
Also, it’s important to stop from time to time. Look up, stare at the sky. It’s so huge and slow, you remember to breathe deeply again, trust me.
    Take care, Olivia. Luv ya

Sorry to see you injured yourself but looks like you’re recovering nicely. One thing I’ve wondered about, what are your goals living in Tokyo? Is this just a temporary place to experience for a couple of years? Because while you do have lunch/dinner once in a while with friends, you seem isolated. As you mentioned, when one is injured or sick living alone without support isn’t so great. When you returned home last year, you seemed happier and much more connected to other people.

    • @oliviaimamura

Thanks, yes, currently much better than back in May when all of this happened :)
Although I'm open to the idea of moving somewhere else, I have no plans to move elsewhere and I don't think I'll ever return to Finland.
I think you're correct, and it has to do with me not being able to build those deep friendships yet that I have back in Finland. I think there's many reasons for it, and for example my breakup strongly affected the friendships I had. Many of the people I used to be close to are not in my life anymore. So I kinda needed to start from scratch again and friendships take time when you don't have an environment where you meet others automatically. Very recently I've been able to meet new lovely people so hopefully in the future things will be different :)

This video speaks to me because I'm currently feeling the burnout lol. I feel like I go through a stage of feeling "burnt out" about every 30-40 days. Knowing this, I try to plan around the 30-40 day mark to do something special for myself and also to just relax and give my brain a rest.
I think so many people don't listen to their body, and they ignore the stages of feeling burnt and try to power through. It's a bad idea. EVERYONE needs some form of stress relief after a certain amount of time.

Can’t tell you how much getting enough sleep helps with the balance aspect. I don’t think it gets any “easier” living alone, but you have to really double down on that self-care stuff and not feel guilty when you’re not “achieving” as much as you feel you can in your head. It sometimes feels really hard to accept that differential between what you know you can do in a day and how much your poor body and willpower can realistically keep up with that. One foot in front of the other!

This is so true! I've been really into sleep health and hygiene actually after listening to Matthew Walker's audiobook Why we sleep.
