If you know TBN won't consistently be consumed in your opener, I feel it's still viable to pre-pull Sprint, then start the pull with Unmend and weave Edge of Shadow+Blood Weapon before continuing into the next steps of the opener. Finally, the guide for my true main! I've honestly been just trying to double weave everything, focusing on getting all of my oGCD attacks on CD, with the order not mattering too much. Some funny things though. 1. I thought for up till level 60 that dark knight didn't have a ranged attack. Turns out that weird little unmend attack that I thought was a shitty provoke was exactly that. ;P 2. I also for up to level 80 didn't have the second combo to my aoe attack. I think they changed it in a patch, it used to be like rather high level, and then they moved it down to 40 something. And I ended up skipping past it, wondering 'when am I going to get the second part of my aoe combo?' Not realizing I had it for a rather long while. ;p Finally, my very first attack involved using unmend, double weaving plunge and edge of shadow, then walking the boss back manually as I wail on it. It's... probably not optimal, but it is cool chasing after your own projectile.
Hi just to let u know when you mentioned “from this to this” the screen went black and then purple. I think that might be some error in the editing. But I love all your guides and thanks for making all these helpful content for levelling players. Cheers
I’ve got my DRK to 81, and it’s honestly funny seeing some of the dungeon bosses(the Amphibious Talos is Malaikah’s Well, which I’m sure I spelled wrong) fail to break TBN with their tank busters. And this is with no other mitigation 😂 I’ve still got a lot of practicing to do for this one, but I managed to get Gunbreaker’s rotation down. I’m sure I can do it with the other tanks, even one as complex as DRK
won't you overcap? might as well pull with Unmend and double weave EoS* and BW. might be easier for new players than face pulling. *to clarify incase it doesn't break.
40:26 Why does Enhanced Unmend give you the 5 second cooldown reduction? It's a really boring answer. When you're moving away from a boss and hitting unmend during the move, you might have burned your plunge stacks already since its part of the DPS rotation. So you might ask why 5 seconds specifically? Well, because if it was the whole ability it would cause some goofy other rotation uses that they don't want :p So now its just a small chance at giving you one extra little plunge if your almost cooled down on it when doing the return to boss after the retreating unmend.
I’m a paladin main but decided to try another tank to have a back up. So dark dark is fun. I know the opener now. Just trying to understand the class now. Thanks for the video.
For how long Delirium lasts during burst phase, it might not be a bad idea to use Delirium early as long as you don't overcap on blood gauge and you don't burst Bloodspillers too early in a coordinated raid party.
You know that effect that the boss of Pandæmonium 5 uses to shoot beams and stuff that has the floating staves that spin around? That effect or something like it needs to be standardized whenever theres going to be magic damage.
I had a DPS ask me in a dungeon a few days ago why I wanted to be at 1 HP after using my macro to warn the party of Living Dead and to let me die. He seemed to follow my explanation quite well, so hopefully he’ll keep that in mind should he ever play as Dark Knight or be healing for a Dark Knight in a dungeon
Fairly new to this game and i chose the tank role because it looks cool. Im also planning on getting drk once i finish arr. My question is, what does the aoe rotation look like for drk? Been watching guides but all rotations are only for single target. I wanted to know how to handle multiple targets better.
That's why you check out each AoE skill. There AREN'T rotations for AoE in most caes. You have a 2 button combo, your mana spender, TBN, and Quietus. But not all trash mobs are the same. Amount of CD usage, timing of stuff, etc. Openers, that's some high end optimizing. Follow the same rules and AoE works out
Hey Wesk, compared to GNB is DRK the more complex tank of the two? I’m pretty new to the game and was wondering if you could give me your opinion on this. Great video as always, appreciate the detailed teaching method of yours.
So I have a question. I know this is late into the year and some change this guide has been out. For lvl 90 openers, when you know TBN isn’t going to be broken immediately isn’t it more worth to use Blood weapon into Edge of Shadow and replace the second edge with a TBN, or maybe delay the TBN until after the siphon strike? That way your still keep Darkside uptime and the shield is on for further mechanics? This also saves on overcapping on MP.
Nice DRK vid, Wesk. Jokes are on point once again. Quick note: Do you think if they gave Undead Rebirth the self heal as well as not being dropped below 1 HP, would fix the anti-synergy?
I haven’t unlocked tbn yet because I’m still at heavensward but there’s been a lot of talks about the ability. What would the opener look like if I don’t use tbn or of I’m not quite sure if the tbn shield breaks?
I love and hate that delirium make quietus give 500 mp, it makes the mp gauge into a odd number and that bugs me IMMENSELY the free flood of darkness/shadow is cool tho
I'm currently leveling DK to play it through Endwalker and looking down the road I was wondering if in that level 90 rotation if it would be fine or even necessary to replace the plunge action with another mitigation other than TBN? I'm only just now in the leveling process where I'd start to use TBN (currently level 71), so maybe the seven seconds and overall mit is far greater than I'm anticipating. And I guess my greatest concern going into future content post level 90 is the weave economy mindset I should have with the rotation after the opener. Like I get that what type of mit you use will depend on what a boss or mob is doing (or their number in the mobs case), but should the mit typically be used second to a mp or blood gauge using action to prevent either loosing damage or overcapping?
@@WeskAlber I was more or less saying if the order of the double weaving mattered going forward after an opener in any circumstances with DK. Like if something would more likely fall off if you weaved it in first rather than second. And it's comforting to know Tank Busters usually don't occur that early on.
You don't. You just have to look at which ones are greyed out. I take a screenshot of my hotbars and then remove every single skill. They get re-added as I record further
Having trouble with the lvl 90 opener. The blood gauge never has enough to use bloodspiller. Sometimes I'll be able to use it the first time but never the second. What am I doing wrong? I've had this issue with other drk openers.
@@Likuzel You're not doing GCDs fast enough. Too much clipping/Skill Speed issues, or not using BW right before your GCD. Make sure you're getting all 5 GCDs before the timer runs out.
Im having a major problem tracking my Mana with the 80 opener, i seem to go below required mana for the second bloodspill , any idea why, as im following the opener up until then
@@WeskAlber im doing the pre pull > hard slash > edge of shadow > derillium > syphon strike > soul eater > living shadow > salted earth > hardslash > edge of shadow > bloodspiller > carve and spite > plunge its at this point things start to go wrong, i can do the first bloodspiller , then the edge of shadow, then the second bloodspiller then second edge of shadow > then the syphon strike and plunge, but i don't have enough mana for the final edge of shadow (sorry for messing up my first comment)
There's a lot of unexplained stuff like needing to become a gladiator and marauder for their skills. The game also doesn't mention HOW to share job skills to other characters. As a new player it was so confusing
@@WeskAlber damn........ actually that's a good thing. :) now i don't have to worry about it. also, is it true that i always want to be as a job and not the normal class? like, bard instead of archer and so on? Is it always the case?
How in the seven hells did you make Esteem withdraw from the battlefield every two seconds… Jokes aside, my DRK has been lvl 90 for the gods know how long now, so I’m watching this guide to make my smol damage become BEEG DAMEGE.
Not gonna lie.. i'm torn between this and GNB for the tank that will give me heart attack. On the flip side, WAR makes me forget that I queued as healer. Haha
are text macros better than they used to be? I want to macro a warning for when I use LD so healers let me "die" and self-heal, but I´ve been warned multiple times that macros just don´t work properly and can mess up skill activation timing, which is pretty importand for LD. Also, I assumed that unmend reducing cooldown for plunge is intended to synergize with boss mechanics that force you to spend some time away from the boss, such as standing on certain spots to prevent big damage, chain big AoEs and the like, during that time it´s better to spam unmend than to do nothing, and with this they ensure you´ll have at least one charge of unmend to burn as a gapcloser when it´s safe to approach again.
@@WeskAlber So I should just go ahead and macro it anyway? I don´t normally intend to use it since most dungeon healers don´t seem to be confortable with it, I only use it as a last resource when I pull too big on a new dungeon
Sure, macro if it feels comfortable. But healers have 0 interaction with Living Dead. Healers have no need to care about it beyond not healing. Their comfort doesn't matter because they don't need to do anything. LD clips you see, I heal myself.
@@WeskAlber Probably should have worded that better. By unconfortable I mean they don´t really recognize it and continue healing through it, wasting it. Generally, if they are competent enough to stop healing for it, I don´t end up needing it. Guess I´ll try a simple text macro and see if it works. Was just worried about the macro not activating at all, but if every other healer can make a funny text rez macro, I guess this should be fine too.
something I'm surprised you didn't mention when it was right on screen on the showcase, "fancy dot" or not, those hits can crit, making it better. I also question why pre-pull blood weapon but not delirium, they basically function the same. If it's due to possibly losing the timer, why not skip that hard slash? All raid buffs are already there at that point.
All DoTs can crit. If you prepull Delirium, the buff will wear off before you get to using those stacks. Watch the timer, it almost runs out when used even after Hard Slash.
DRK is not the easiest tank (thats WAR) but its not much harder. DRK dificulty lies in that early on you barely have sustain, but by level 70 with TBN that becomes less of an issue. Rotation wise, the difficulty in DRK is how much you have to double weave every 2 minutes, of course how difficult that is just depends on your ping and your own skill. GNB for comparation, the other weave heavy tank, doesnt double weave as much but is much more stricter with the weaves. On DRK you can delay a skill 1 GCD if needed with not much trouble but on GNB you completly lose your skill if you skip it, so what you would find harder - more double weaves in a very short amount of time, or less but more strict weaves every 30 seconds.
I play dark knight for the first time and around lv54+ rn . I wish drk would get a faster attack animation but thats just me. Reminds me a lot like playing Gladiolus (episode Gladiolus) with Ardyn’s dark power combined lol im attached to Drk class and still learning :)
I've watched all the Endwalker guides you've made so far, and I like the effort you put into making them. People overlook the how difficult it can be to make and edit incredibly long form videos that yield alot if important information. If I may suggest something, I think the "karaoke openers" are kinda unnecessary. You already go over in length what to do in each opener. I know it's kind of a signature of your (I've never seen anyone else do them at least) but it just pads out the video when you make several of these. You could almost make a full video if you compiled all the karaoke openers from just your level 90 guides. Good hustle either way
Thank you for the support but on the Karaoke openers: This was a requested feature that seemingly has gone over extremely well. Going over the rotation slowly, and then on-pace has given people a further understanding of the speed or complexity of the openers. I do have some level of awareness on the padding. I am intentionally trying to only do Karaoke openers 3 times per video at most, where it feels doable. I am not worried about length overall because even if I did remove Karaoke Openers people would accuse of padding and such. People see a number and don't consider how much info may or may not be involved because of 5 minute videos that have no depth. Not a slight on those videos, since quick overviews are good, that's just not what I am going for. I do my best to be brief but extensive in my information and that's mostly enough for me. So while the length has gone up I've been ok with it due to the positive response. Keep your criticisms in mind though, because there is going to be a feedback thing I intend to do. I do want a more varied response in positives and negatives of this second leveling guide series that will hopefully improve videos going forward. If it's just been a silent majority for some reason, 1-100 or whatever we get will forego the Karaoke. But I get the feeling that I'll actually be only further honing the process, length be damned.
@@WeskAlber I personally like the karaoke as a new player myself. I’ve found my self sometimes singing mentally to keep up my combos. It’s easy to skip it if we feel we know the cycle just fine anyhow. It can feel a bit like padding, I admit but when I’m totally clueless on a class it does huge things for me.
Ha you're so funny dude, like man you're the funniest dude in the world holy shit. Thank goodness you're here to tell us all these great takes man! Wowzas!
That's an age long debate. Should you pull bosses with Provoke or Ranged attack? Short answer is it doesn't matter - pulling with Provoke is a tiny bit more DPS efficient while pulling with ranged attack is playing it on the safe side. Long answer: Many people prefer starting boss pulls with provoke because of its higher range and it being an oGCD meaning it doesn't delay your GCD in any way wheras pulling with ranged attack will put your 1-2-3 GCD on cooldown meaning you might have to wait a few milliseconds longer until you can start your 1-2-3 had you not used ranged attack. Then there's the other group that is very adamant that Provoke is a sacred Ability that should only be called upon when absolutely necessary and to use it on boss pulls would be to defile its divinity. They're basically saying that you should always start boss pulls with ranged attack and keep your Provoke off cooldown for tankswaps, adds or emergencies (e.g. your co-tank forgot to turn his stance off). I can't think of any bossfight where the MT needs provoke within the first 30 seconds of the fight so I usually just pull with it because of its longer range and oGCD status.
@@dragonriderabens9761 I'm assuming he made the exception for darkknight because of the bloodweapon he does pre pull and the way it generates gauge. You have to finish your Souleater combo until you have enough gauge for living shadow. Weskalber is very adamant about summoning your living shadow as soon as possible. If you pull with ranged attack you'll have to do 4 GCDs (ranged, 1, 2, 3) until you have enough gauge to summon living shadow whereas pulling with provoke only requires you to do 3 GCDs (1, 2, 3) until you have the required gauge for living shadow. So pulling with provoke lets you summon living shadow a few milliseconds earlier in most scenarios.
also in dungeon pulls, if everyone (YES, including the HEALER) presses their aoe buttons in a timely fashion, plus their Heal/Defense off-Globals, then barely any tank needs to plan nor urgently require their """ultimate""" cooldown. assuming everyone's appropriately geared lol
this game has a lot of content where you sync lower than that- for example you could get Sastasha in leveling roulette and be synced down to 18. so it's still good to know what 'level' all their skills are.
The moment you get drunk with friends and buy a dark knight adventure book then wake-up in the morning with hotbars full of skills and NO idea how any of them work......
Here's this cooldown that is only useful against magic attacks! 'How do I know what is a magic attack?' That's the neat part! You don't.
I had no good way to properly make this joke, but I wanted to.
Iirc you can use the battle log in the chat. "boss uses __" is physical, "boss is casting __" is magic

2. I also for up to level 80 didn't have the second combo to my aoe attack. I think they changed it in a patch, it used to be like rather high level, and then they moved it down to 40 something. And I ended up skipping past it, wondering 'when am I going to get the second part of my aoe combo?' Not realizing I had it for a rather long while. ;p
Finally, my very first attack involved using unmend, double weaving plunge and edge of shadow, then walking the boss back manually as I wail on it. It's... probably not optimal, but it is cool chasing after your own projectile.
re 2: I'm level 75, and glad to know I didn't just completely miss that for 30 odd levels lol
Daaamn! Thank you for this guide (:
Hi just to let u know when you mentioned “from this to this” the screen went black and then purple. I think that might be some error in the editing. But I love all your guides and thanks for making all these helpful content for levelling players. Cheers
No error. Glad to be of service.
I’ve got my DRK to 81, and it’s honestly funny seeing some of the dungeon bosses(the Amphibious Talos is Malaikah’s Well, which I’m sure I spelled wrong) fail to break TBN with their tank busters. And this is with no other mitigation 😂
I’ve still got a lot of practicing to do for this one, but I managed to get Gunbreaker’s rotation down. I’m sure I can do it with the other tanks, even one as complex as DRK
Brilliant guide mate
won't you overcap? might as well pull with Unmend and double weave EoS* and BW.
might be easier for new players than face pulling.
*to clarify incase it doesn't break.
yes. my body is ready for wesk drk guide
My solution is to have LD on a macro accompanied by "COME ON! DO IT NOW, KILL ME!"
10/10 no notes
thank you for this
Sending this video to all the DRKs that don't know how to use TBN or mitigation ^^
Finally, DRK is playable
The "From this to this" bit are always top tier comedy.
Love the opening Joke!
You know that effect that the boss of Pandæmonium 5 uses to shoot beams and stuff that has the floating staves that spin around? That effect or something like it needs to be standardized whenever theres going to be magic damage.
Too much of an effect. I'd settle for different colored cast bars. Maybe a purplish one for anything magical.
even tho drk is more dps like still my main tank and will always be :)
Very helpful :D
Fairly new to this game and i chose the tank role because it looks cool. Im also planning on getting drk once i finish arr. My question is, what does the aoe rotation look like for drk? Been watching guides but all rotations are only for single target. I wanted to know how to handle multiple targets better.
That's why you check out each AoE skill. There AREN'T rotations for AoE in most caes. You have a 2 button combo, your mana spender, TBN, and Quietus.
But not all trash mobs are the same. Amount of CD usage, timing of stuff, etc. Openers, that's some high end optimizing. Follow the same rules and AoE works out
@@WeskAlber appreciate the response. Will try and check those out.
Woot! Thx Wesk!
Thank you attack icon change i can use dark mind now knowing if it actually works or not 😂
Hey Wesk, compared to GNB is DRK the more complex tank of the two? I’m pretty new to the game and was wondering if you could give me your opinion on this. Great video as always, appreciate the detailed teaching method of yours.
Personally, yes. GNB feels more DPS and starts with the most skills, but overall is easier to understand
I would like to add on that as a fellow new player, I feel that GNB is a MUCH safer class to learn. Better heals and is more forgiving overall.
I believe you just push every oGCD back by 1, to fit BW in after the first Edge of Shadow
Nice DRK vid, Wesk. Jokes are on point once again.
Quick note: Do you think if they gave Undead Rebirth the self heal as well as not being dropped below 1 HP, would fix the anti-synergy?
It would potentially make it toooo OP, but yes. It would still be anti-synergy with WHM just cuz WHM NEVER wants to Holy with Ults.
@@WeskAlber Too right, brother. Feel like most WHM are just waiting for invulns to happen rather than spamming that op Holy.

Do you have a video on how to get your dark knight gear and sword? If not can you make one please?
There's a card in the intro and outro that lists the gear
I haven’t unlocked tbn yet because I’m still at heavensward but there’s been a lot of talks about the ability. What would the opener look like if I don’t use tbn or of I’m not quite sure if the tbn shield breaks?
Just don't use it.
I love and hate that delirium make quietus give 500 mp, it makes the mp gauge into a odd number and that bugs me IMMENSELY
the free flood of darkness/shadow is cool tho
I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but it's rare or never for a boss to be doing a Tank Buster during openers
@@WeskAlber I was more or less saying if the order of the double weaving mattered going forward after an opener in any circumstances with DK. Like if something would more likely fall off if you weaved it in first rather than second. And it's comforting to know Tank Busters usually don't occur that early on.
@@hennyzhi2261 I do believe there is no leniency in terms of how many GCDs you take, but I think order changes is ok. But I am not a high end DRK
@@WeskAlber I appreciate the help regardless - hope you are having a wonderful day!

Having trouble with the lvl 90 opener. The blood gauge never has enough to use bloodspiller. Sometimes I'll be able to use it the first time but never the second. What am I doing wrong?
I've had this issue with other drk openers.
You did all your job quests to get the full kit? First guess would be you are not getting all the gauge from Blood Weapon
@@WeskAlber All job quests for drk are done. How do I make sure I have all the gauge from bloodweapon?

Im having a major problem tracking my Mana with the 80 opener, i seem to go below required mana for the second bloodspill , any idea why, as im following the opener up until then
Do you mean the required Blood Gauge? Because Bloodspiller doesn't use MP
@@WeskAlber im doing the pre pull > hard slash > edge of shadow > derillium > syphon strike > soul eater > living shadow > salted earth > hardslash > edge of shadow > bloodspiller > carve and spite > plunge

You did. Because of the later openers. Later openers Blood Weapon is used Pre-pull too
There's a lot of unexplained stuff like needing to become a gladiator and marauder for their skills.

On the flip side, WAR makes me forget that I queued as healer. Haha
YEEEAAAAAAHHH !!!!!!!!
POGGERS!
are text macros better than they used to be?
Timing isn't very important for LD and you should be telling the healer BEFORE you pull anyway.
@@OpXarxa That's why I say in the video "Tell the healer." I tell them BEFORE I PULL what I intend to do. Then they have no excuse.
something I'm surprised you didn't mention when it was right on screen on the showcase, "fancy dot" or not, those hits can crit, making it better.
So is dark knight a hard tank class? Everyone I talked to said it was easy. I guess I could try
The intros always make me laugh so much, "Watch me go from THIS... to THIS!"
DRK opener is higher DPS than most DPS jobs.
DRK should never have been tank in the first place.

I feel like you might have explained it an I missed it...but why use provoke instead of Unmend to pull when every other tank uses their equivalent?
That's an age long debate. Should you pull bosses with Provoke or Ranged attack? Short answer is it doesn't matter - pulling with Provoke is a tiny bit more DPS efficient while pulling with ranged attack is playing it on the safe side.
Long answer:
Many people prefer starting boss pulls with provoke because of its higher range and it being an oGCD meaning it doesn't delay your GCD in any way wheras pulling with ranged attack will put your 1-2-3 GCD on cooldown meaning you might have to wait a few milliseconds longer until you can start your 1-2-3 had you not used ranged attack.
@@splizzex except DK is the only job where he Wesk makes that suggestion...all the others he suggests their respective ranged attacks
@@dragonriderabens9761 propably because of the animation lock ?
Then you're just wasting a CD. Why not use your Ultimate? It's free and makes a run safer
