A few suggestion on modifications to the car = Sierra RS 500 rear spoiler, TSW 3 spoke 13 inch alloys, tiger seat covers, fluffy dice, a very long aerial with a fox tail 2 black plastic strips hang on the rear bumper, motorsport sticker on the windscreen, halfords carbon fibre fuel cap. Then stand back and admire at your CREATION. forgot to mention a wrx hood scoop.
I had an S500 until last year traded it in on a BMW 335D which is an excellent car but can’t compete with the Merc as regards the superb ride and the “smug” factor. In a big Merc your isolated from the rest of the planet never mind other road users!
Way back when I worked in London I used to see these MB S class being driven around or parked with a driver. Upon closer inspection they were mainly S320 diesels. It seems they cars for the upper echelons of the management of City firms to be whisked around. I understand the cars were operated in the same way a mini cab works, but were more upmarket than a Nissan Primera. If that's the case, these were probably bought at fleet prices and without the VAT, so would be considerably cheaper than 60K GBP. I imagine if they're run for 3 years and sold on, the car would cost the operator close to nothing other than routine maintenance. Since the operator is looking for the cheapest package/cheapest to operate, they'll go with the poverty spec. I did look into the costs of buying a 3 year old S320 diesel and they and were around 30K GBP about 10 years ago. Loved the "little drive". You're keeping us smiling.
Hi Matt, you’re probably the most educated car reviewer on the whole of RUclips. Every video you make has some general knowledge or historical fact which I’m guessing many of the people who don’t watch you wouldn’t have a clue about! Keep up the great work.
Thankyou yet again! I woke up after a poor nights sleep locked in a flat in Oviedo and thought umm!!!! what I am going to do today? Then High Peak Autos appeared and I had a good laugh, you are therapy! Thankyou!
The S500 is not pointless as it is almost the same performance (engine-wise) compared with the S63. With a few little upgrades the S500 is far more affordable s63 imo.
Tbh S500 is a sweetspot. Its not over the top harsh performance oriented full AMG car, its still oriented towards luxury, and under the hood youve still got a sweet 380 hp V8 that delivers plenty of power when you need it. Also with cylinder deactivation its not horrible on the fuel either.
Awesome review! I love the S-Class, but I never knew you could get one with such a basic spec. Keep up the good work, always informative and entertaining!
The oil leak will probably be coming from the oil cooler in the middle of the "v" of the engine. The seals perish on the v6 engines up to around 2011 ish. Big job, replace the swirl flap motor too if it turns out to be that. Lean over the wing and at the back of the engine if you can see it with a torch and you may see oil leaking down from the top of the gearbox from a little drain hole near the turbo.
If you are parked the clock will only set with large increments. Start the car from scratch and drive forward slowly then turn on the display and while still driving then set the clock it will be able to set in one minute increments
Matt ... I don't get why people give your videos a thumbs down. I enjoy your honest reviews which at times make me smile, even if I'm not keen on the car you have reviewed.
A barge,. More like a ww1 German Dreadnaught. And the sights you see on a test drive amazing. Can't wait for part two. When the repair bills sink you lmao
My dad had a 2010 C350 CDI that he put 200,000 miles on...that was until some old gran decided to write it off in the supermarket car park in January. Definitely had years left of life in it. Can guarantee these V6 turbodiesels are also bulletproof!
Suspiciously low mileage for 14 years old S-class diesel. I've seen quite a lot of clocked ex chauffeurs / taxis on the market. Hard to find out as they normally clocked before first MOT with backed up service history. Keep up with great work mate👍. Stay safe everyone.
So you’ve bought a car that handles like a barge, with an oil leak, non-working driver’s window and no parking sensors on a car that needs mooring not parking!! Covid Purchase....good luck moving it on!! Nice video though (best test drive so far)
Chris Anderson With my experience with Mercedes, the lower the mileage the more it leaks. Those gaskets get brittle. Once had a 20 year old W203 with just 50,000 miles and I literally had to replace every single gasket apart from the head gasket. Meanwhile I had a GLK350 with 120,000 miles that never leaked oil.
Entertaining video as always Matt 👍🏼You’re absolutely spot on about the earlier 3.2 CDi straight six being much more reliable and robust then the later 3.0 V6. Ask any self respecting M-B tech 👍🏼 and they’ll tell you the same. Both engines are fine power plants and obviously have their inherent issues but the earlier straight 6 are known to be virtually indestructible (if properly looked after) and easier to work on when needed. 👍🏼 BTW... it definitely needs better, bigger wheels 👍🏼👌🏼
Having had Merc’s for years, my Mercedes specialist said the straight six petrol and straight 6 diesels were the most reliable and the most bullet proof. As a result I bought a R129 320 that’s bomb proof 👍🏻 Don’t spend silly money. But she’s a lovely old girl. Just tittivate her.

Lee S How are you gonna tell me what I drive buddy? I guarantee you are the one that drives a Nissan. I drive a 2019 Mercedes E Class which I worked hard to buy. Stop hating and maybe one day you can afford one.
Another great review; truthful & humorous. With regard to the lack of extras, I remember my late Father buying a brand new Merc 300E from the main dealer in Macclesfield. He was gobsmacked that the radio/cassette player (!) and sunroof weren't included in the price. When he died, I offered the car back to the dealer because it was too big for my Mother to drive and she had issues grappling with a Nissan Micra! It was 5 years old, had 18000 miles on the clock with a full service history from themselves and they declined it on the grounds that the car's interior was more popular in Japan than in the U.K. Think I called the sales manager a tosser and drove the car back to London, where I was living at the time and sold it within three days, for a really good price. The whole experience really put me off Mercs and their main dealers, to whom my Dad had been really loyal.
May I suggest that you give it the sporty S63 sporty facelift upgrade with quad tailpipe(regardless if it's purely cosmetics or the real straight pipe), side skirts and don't forget the latest LED tail lights. I guess that will be the cheapest mods which will really transform the car. While you're at it, you might want to install the fridge as well.
@@kieta600 Not if you DIY, just serviced the wifes S class for less than £100. I shop around and do it myself, they are very easy to work on and after market parts are easy come by and good quality. The down side to these cars are pot holes.
MB were even meaner with their options in the 90s - the W140 came as standard with steel wheels, a manual gearbox, no radio, cloth seats etc, crazy considering that they had a base price of £76,000.00 in today's money!
Have literally been waiting for a budget Mercedes video for so long from HPA! Beautiful - looking forward to all of the parts! Bank holiday weekend sorted :)
With the registration number from Milton Keynes, it is possible that this was supplied by Mercedes-Benz fleet as a hire/company car, thus explaining why it has no extras at all...
At 3:38 I'm reminded of a late uncle of mine who bought a new BMW 760i in 2004 with absolutely zero options on it. It didn't even have heated seats. At the time (in Ireland) it was €180k
Many years ago the English company I worked for had a pair of w126 chassis sedans with wind up rear windows cloth seats and no air on, which were essentially taxis used to haul staff to airport etc. they don’t all come loaded like we see in the US
I just got one today 07 plate for £2600. I have way more extras. Now. When you make a video about the car pal GOOD advice. Talk about the car, not about yourself, what you like, what you prefer.... Talk about the car !!!!!
A Brandenburg gate on wheels. You could always sell it to somebody who needs to self isolate alone, once it has been prepped for sale. Or, turn it into an 'Air BnB'
I remember when I bought a '97 850 Volvo T5 and i asked if it had reversing sensors as the '95 BMW 318Ti I replaced it with had them. The seller said yes, just one in the middle.. Bloody tow bar! It used to work though and no one would park too close to me. I had a '99 Mercedes CD220 CDi estate that turned out to be a right rust bucket and the gearbox went kapput. Had to scrap it n the end as it was too far gone. But the ride was nice. It was softer on the suspension than the Volvo but firmer seats. Apparently they are firmer for comfort on long journeys. I'd still choose a Volvo though for comfort anyday. My current car, a 2010 XFs ticks all the boxes apart from getting stuff into the boot and is a joy to drive. I even got 54 mpg out of it when we were allowed out on the roads. Now I'm getting 3 weeks to a gallon.
My second car was a 2003 vectra 2.2 DTI. The one with the horrible sounding engine with the components from the relay/movano vans. I bought that car in 2008 with 110000 miles. I had it for 4 years and put 40k miles on it with not a single problem. The only issue was an EGR valve. It was a faultless car until I was hit in the side and insurance deemed it as a loss. The next car I bought was a 2009 BMW e60 530D. It drove worse than the vectra, never felt confident in corners and the gearbox was a laggy joke. Also all the buttons in the centre console were falling off and the iDrive display was a PS1 while the dial for it felt it would twist off at any moment. I tried an E class and it was the same. I've now got a 2017 insignia and again, it's a good car like the vectra. For the £3500 I'd go for a top/high spec 2009-2012 insignia or mondeo
Electric window buttons fail after a few tears but me being in the motor trade for 44 years you can pick up some stuff that other people don't know. Try spraying the buttons with WD-40 it might not work straight away but give it time pressing the button up and down and it usually fixes the problem but I have known it to take a couple of days pressing the switch every now and again, best to try it before getting a secondhand part off Ebay for a million quid.
Less 'electronics' = a better car. I've probably got the most 'basic' VW Touareg on the planet, for just that reason. EVERYTHING, in it's most utilitarian form, works. And works perfectly. Best wishes as always, keep up the great content! :)

I had an A8 d3 from 2004 with no optional extras as well - no parking sensors, no automatic headlamps, no automatic windshieldwipers, nothing really but it did have xenon lights and heated seats, was very light the car only had 1700kg so it had that going for it....
Remove battery positive cable from the front battery and the back battery in the trunk for about 30 seconds and it will reset the computer. You can than set the timer....and will reset ECU as well...that will reset power mode to factory setting...
Soft-closing doors were first introduced in the W140 S-Class model in 1991 and they have been a standard S-Class feature ever since. So I think the soft-closing doors on your car are just like the driver's power window: Broken.
Hi What i think me and others like is to take this amazing machine and turn it into (factory build and look please don't make it stronger and change the suspension and stuff like that i just hate this kiddish crazy thing sorry for my language ) The suggestions are as following: 1- change the wheels as you suggested. Very good idea 2- fiix the car oil leak and change filters i want to see all of that please. Fix the window issues. Things i don't do it but enjoy others doing it 3- please don't put amg badge on it 4- detail the car and fix any paint issues and have it look awesome 5- if you are able or welling put cruise control most likely it exist you only need to activate it. Same thing goes to ventilation and heated seats. 6- keep driving it for long time show us how much you enjoy it and how reliable the car is 7- put new screen that has apple and android connection to the screen. It's there available screen let someone do it cus it's pain in the butt. 8- please how good the car is and how is the economy goes and difference between actual and EPA rating 9- if you are to make it 200k miles you be able to give real time show about mercs diesel engines reliability. 10-please don't forget to put camera for reverse and 360 camera and parking sensors it is cheap to put on such older model. If you can do it that's gonna be amazing 10-put amg body kit would amazing 11- please change the head and back lamps to match much cuter 2013 model years lights. 12- Please change all oils in the car, steering, breaks oil it's due now, differential oil, gear oil let's watch you doing it with great video photage Sorry for long message but you ask for it ;-)

Matt the wheels, we're the clue it was the Poverty spec , The W221 S-Class is gorgeous !
BMW will never reach the level of the Mercedes

Lee S Is that why I have a 2019 Mercedes Benz E Class?
Lee S How are you gonna tell me what I drive buddy? I guarantee you are the one that drives a Nissan. I drive a 2019 Mercedes E Class which I worked hard to buy. Stop hating and maybe one day you can afford one.
That’s an interesting car. These videos are great, keep them coming!
I would personally drive it to the nearest scrapyard that’s the best place for any Mercedes product ! 😂😂😂😂
How do I get one of them!!!!
Go buy this one. Problem solved. You're welcome 👍
Better still, dont buy this one lol
Love your content High Peak Autos, you inspired me to start my own youtube channel.
Thank you for motivation.
Thanks. Good luck
I normally heat my seats with a fart, so this s class will do 😁👍
May I suggest that you give it the sporty S63 sporty facelift upgrade with quad tailpipe(regardless if it's purely cosmetics or the real straight pipe), side skirts and don't forget the latest LED tail lights. I guess that will be the cheapest mods which will really transform the car. While you're at it, you might want to install the fridge as well.
That’s a lot of car for £3500
In first year of ownership repair and maintenance bills could easily be twice as the value of the vehicle. That's why they're cheap.
Nothing says 'Asian corner shop owner' like an S-class Mercedes
Have literally been waiting for a budget Mercedes video for so long from HPA! Beautiful - looking forward to all of the parts! Bank holiday weekend sorted :)
It does come with an Antiques Roadshow style wooden dash🤮
The previous range were the best. The 90's ones. These (yours) are very good. They were legends.
With the registration number from Milton Keynes, it is possible that this was supplied by Mercedes-Benz fleet as a hire/company car, thus explaining why it has no extras at all...
That crossed my mind
Fredd Gregg The first two letter relate to where a car was registered. Very geeky and not many people know
Anything with an M is Manchester/Merseyside. Anything with an L is london, B Birmingham etc etc
Fredd Gregg I bet there are some sights on the road today
@@HighPeakAutos, yes, if you have watched my channel, it gets pretty geeky on there, and I made a video about just this subject back in July.
Absolutely a beautiful car. I'm a true Mercedes-Benz fan.
At 3:38 I'm reminded of a late uncle of mine who bought a new BMW 760i in 2004 with absolutely zero options on it. It didn't even have heated seats. At the time (in Ireland) it was €180k
Haha seriously
Thanks, Matt. Nice car for not a lot of money. If you want to turn it into a project car, Tyler Hoover may have some ideas :-)
This S class generation is one of the more reliable ones compared with the previous generation. Great car!
I've got an Insignia video coming soon actually
Electric window buttons fail after a few tears but me being in the motor trade for 44 years you can pick up some stuff that other people don't know. Try spraying the buttons with WD-40 it might not work straight away but give it time pressing the button up and down and it usually fixes the problem but I have known it to take a couple of days pressing the switch every now and again, best to try it before getting a secondhand part off Ebay for a million quid.
Amazing value for money. Best looking shape S class after the w140, just change the rear lights for those all red LED ones and it’s sorted!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Less 'electronics' = a better car. I've probably got the most 'basic' VW Touareg on the planet, for just that reason. EVERYTHING, in it's most utilitarian form, works. And works perfectly. Best wishes as always, keep up the great content! :)
Thats quite right, less to go wrong. Cheers

I can believe it
I would never buy new because basically im a cheapskate (just like Scotty lol) but i do luv these old Benz & its very helpful that someone, like youself, does excellent reviews on them, when they're a few years down the track & we can see just theyve stood the test of time
Thanks for the excellent long trrm reviews
Cheers :)
Thanks for watching!
Hi, I just finished watching the older S-class you had and saw this! as I watched the 04 go through its paces all the time I was thinking "I hope you do the next model" ! And you did !! I prefer this one because it has the more muscular rear wings I think it is the best-looking one but that is just me. I will comment again at the end of this series of presentations. Thank you
I had an A8 d3 from 2004 with no optional extras as well - no parking sensors, no automatic headlamps, no automatic windshieldwipers, nothing really but it did have xenon lights and heated seats, was very light the car only had 1700kg so it had that going for it....
Remove battery positive cable from the front battery and the back battery in the trunk for about 30 seconds and it will reset the computer.
You can than set the timer....and will reset ECU as well...that will reset power mode to factory setting...
Best car channel on here. That dry humour and delivery is a killer
Haha thank you
Soft-closing doors were first introduced in the W140 S-Class model in 1991 and they have been a standard S-Class feature ever since. So I think the soft-closing doors on your car are just like the driver's power window: Broken.
Soft close isn't standard on UK S Class's. Its an option
Love the channel bud. Been following for a while.
Thanks! I appreciate it :)
Hi
What i think me and others like is to take this amazing machine and turn it into (factory build and look please don't make it stronger and change the suspension and stuff like that i just hate this kiddish crazy thing sorry for my language )
The suggestions are as following:
1- change the wheels as you suggested. Very good idea
2- fiix the car oil leak and change filters i want to see all of that please. Fix the window issues. Things i don't do it but enjoy others doing it
3- please don't put amg badge on it
4- detail the car and fix any paint issues and have it look awesome
5- if you are able or welling put cruise control most likely it exist you only need to activate it. Same thing goes to ventilation and heated seats.
6- keep driving it for long time show us how much you enjoy it and how reliable the car is
7- put new screen that has apple and android connection to the screen. It's there available screen let someone do it cus it's pain in the butt.
8- please how good the car is and how is the economy goes and difference between actual and EPA rating
9- if you are to make it 200k miles you be able to give real time show about mercs diesel engines reliability.
10-please don't forget to put camera for reverse and 360 camera and parking sensors it is cheap to put on such older model. If you can do it that's gonna be amazing
10-put amg body kit would amazing
11- please change the head and back lamps to match much cuter 2013 model years lights.
12- Please change all oils in the car, steering, breaks oil it's due now, differential oil, gear oil let's watch you doing it with great video photage
Sorry for long message but you ask for it ;-)
Thanks for the suggestions

Advice? Sell its parts on E Bay. That way you won't incur the massive repair costs and will make a profit, which is presumably why you're in the car business?
This is a superb choice for anyone wanting an unreliable money pit. The ideal customer is a council house chav who is a small time marijuana dealer. It also has a trick up its sleeve because if you enjoy not being let out at junctions by other motorists, you'll absolutely adore this car.
Hi Matt not the best of cars (in my opinion) But your expert take on it is great as always
Paint it white with a black bonnet, boot and roof, put white neon under it get some crazy thick chrome rims. Black out the windows, too. Go full KGB
Hahaha The 'classy' look
@@HighPeakAutos Then take it to Birmingham or Sheffield, it'll sell like hot cakes.
