    Owned a 2004 S500 LWB 4matic for about 2 years. Very reliable vehicle with no rust when I bought it with 120,000km on the clock, all I did was oil changes, pads and tires. Wafts around in complete comfort and with 4matic, perfectly capable during harsh Canadian winters.

      I still own mine, S430 4Matic. Paid $5k (CDN) for it in 2017 and because of inflation, it's probably gone up in value. I use it as a road trip car a few times a year and drive it all winter because of the 4Matic, and I have winter tires for it so it goes anywhere. It's cost me virtually nothing to own. I do my own oil changes and I had to replace a smog pump, which I bought used for under $100. The quietness and ride comfort are sublime. First Mercedes I've owned after being a loyal BMW owner for decades. I don't see myself going back.

    W140 was made to a quality, unlike the W220 which was made to a price! I previously owned the former and I have owned the latter S 320 CDI, for 13 years. I also own a W221 S63 AMG and I still think the W140 was a better built car than both the W220 and W221.

    Really enjoying your channel.
    I bought a 1999 W220 S500 L in black with cream interior a couple of years ago, just before the pandemic. Amazingly it only cost £1000 with 93k on the clock. Great spec including soft close doors, heated and ventilated seats, linguatronic, old school Nokia phone in the armrest and keyless go although unfortunately no key card. Amazingly I’ve had almost no issues. I did spend a fair amount immediately after purchase just to make it good - B service and new brake pads and discs plus a full stereo upgrade which cost more than the car but that was a want rather than a need. I also changed the sparkplugs which was expensive. I think it’s an amazing car and so much metal for the money. I also have a beautiful low millage W124 E320 Coupe. As much as I love it, the W220 is in a different league.

    I have an '06 S430 4Matic with 105,000 miles on them. It has been a great car! One of the air strut did go out so I had to get a replacement from Suncore Industries for $180 and it works great. As someone with an engineering background, I did change out the strut myself, as well as some other little things on the car. To be honest, there are many things in this S-class generation that you can service yourself. If you are down to get your hands dirty once every 1-2 years, this car is a steal, considering it rides better than most modern cars out there, especially for the price. When you are looking to get one of these, make sure to check on the air suspension, which can oftentimes break. Other than that, I would say it's very reliable.

    A very accurate review of the W220, I own a 2004 S280 with only 43000kms on it. First of it has 3 concealed cup holders, 2 at the back on the front part of the centre arm rest that you press in and they come out and one at the front just in front of the center armrest behind the gear lever that you also press in for it to be revealed. That crankshaft sensor I’ve had to change, invaluable consumer advice on that. My boot also has the refrigerator unit taking up more space but I manage to survive with it.

    Owner of a 2004 LS here. I love these S-Class, super timeless and very subtle design. First thing that hit me on these cars is the scent, classic German luxury scent. When my confidence is up, one day I desire to own one of these cars. A buddy of mine has the W221 chasis with the 4.7L V8 engine. Personally I prefer the styling and interior of that car, but both cars suffer the same fate with the headlight design. I don't know, they just never really ticked with me. Other than that, brilliant cars that are the epitome of luxury in the automotive world.

    I had a 2004 4 matic S500 purchased used at 30,000 miles and used it till 185,000 miles. One air shock and pump but otherwise not a problem. Traded it for a 2005 S500 4matic with 25,000 miles that I still have. In the USA the cup holder is in front of the arm rear, it deploys from the wood panel, not a great design. Yours doesn’t have it because it most likely broke and the previous owner did not want to spend the $150 to replace it, it just snaps in. These are wonderful highway cars, I just used it to pick up a new puppy from the breeder. 5 hour trip each way, 10 hours in the car and I felt completely fine afterwards. Powerful, quiet, supremely comfortable. I do most of my own maintenance so cost is not an issue.

      W140 4 Door - utterly astounding car - will never be beaten in my view - by far the best car of the 50+ cars I have owned
      W140 Coupe - good but not close to the 4 door
      W220 coupe - Not bad, but lots of electronic crap that stops working remarkably quickly
      W220 4 door - Not good, same problem as the coup with electronics but does not have the extra $$$ spent on build quality
      In summary - I believe the W140 to be the finest engineered car ever made. Try changing a ball joint on one - you cant, you have to change the wishbone cos its pressed directly into it to remove the flex at the joint. The same applies to every component of the car - just sublime quality.

    The best car in the world for the price, just watch out for rust on earlier pre 2003 galvanised models and suspension issues. Low miles (under 100k) S320 SWB the one to go for in black, blue or dark grey.

    I own a w220 S320 petrol. It is equipped with a Prins LPG installation. It is by far the most comfortable and reliable car I have ever driven. I do all the reparations myself and use OEM pieces. Did 130k km in 3 years without a hick-up! The only big expense I had was the treatment of the rusty edges 2 years ago.

    Yea, you had me until the opinion of the styling of the W140. The 140's styling was of a time, much like the dash of the W220 which you dislike. For those eras, both were fresh. I guess we all seek something that is timeless, well-engineered/reliable and a value. I ended up with an '04 LS430 and couldn't be happier. Fun review!

First E class was the model from 1990 which I bought in 2001 then the second was a 1999-2000 shape which I bought in 2007. The later model was so smooth to drive and floated along, I lvd it. I was gonna get the slightly newer shape next which I think if im correct came out in 2001-2, but I went 4 a 2003 Audi TT 225, OMG gr8 car 2 drive and the power when pulling away from lights or accelerating on2 the dual carriageway/motorway 😀. Apart from a thermostat playing up at one point I didn’t have a minutes problem with it. My mate who had a bad heart persuaded me to sell it to him on the premise that he had a bad heart and always wanted it, he used it for a year and parked it in his garden after that where it could possibly still be, I’ve lost touch with him now but the last time I saw him the Merc hadn’t moved for over 15 years!

    I’ve owned a w220 s600 for 2 years now, and I’ve been lucky enough to have had no real bad experiences so far. Only necessary repairs were a cracked coolant reservoir, brakes, battery, and a starter. Any other repair has just been preventative maintenance or because I hope to keep it for much much longer. A lot of the electrical problems I’ve been able to solve by checking fuses or various reset procedures (so far). Getting ready to do the conductor plate and some upgrades to the valve body while I’m in there. The interior is not as nice as either the w140 or w221, but I couldn’t complain for the price I got it at, still nicer than most of my other friends’ cars!

During that time I replaced air struts £800 a pop, , compressor motors, and as for rust!!!!! don't mention it especially around the wheel arches. I now have a W221 S320 Cdi long wheelbase which is a far superior car and I love it and rust will not be a problem although the electrics can be problematic at times. The driving and ride experience in it is second to none. As you say the downside is it is to big and parking it is a nightmare. On a long run I have achieved 44mpg in the W221. There are two cupholders at the end of the rear armrest and one folding cupholder at the center console. You can also put a bottle or another cup where the folding cupholder pops out.
    I bought a nice example 2005 S 500 L a few years ago and I've been very happy with it. Low maintenance costs, great noise, no problem driving all day long and the champagne fridge is a superb party trick. Also the 2004-2005 S 500 get the 7G-Tronic in rear wheel drive models so you get the same fuel economy as the S 350 but a LOT more power and torque - and better exhaust tone.
    Also there are no two batteries. The W221 does have two batteries.
    The Airmatic is really not that expensive to repair. Parts are relatively cheap and you don't need to repair the whole system at once.

Drove both of them between Marbella and Monaco a bunch of times and they did that trip better than many of the newer vehicles I replaced them with. In fact, watching your review, made me miss these cars now. I still kept a 2007 CL 550 back in Canada, and that, I feel was the last of its kind, before it became a bit too much iOS instead of good old DOS :) Love the reviews and the clever remarks, thanks for sharing.

      That's interesting, as I'm considering an S-Class as my next car. Why the S55 AMG over the S600? More grunt? Better through corners? Better engine note? Did it come with more toys as standard?

    • @smileoftenatsea
      @smileoftenatsea 3 года назад +1

      @@Stormy177 Both came with all the options, I found the 55 to be much better handling without losing any of the comfort. The later turbo charged and supercharged versions were much quicker, but I found the 600 to be almost lethargic considering the size of the engine. It was very smooth however. And in my experience at least, the 55 was more reliable. If i would go back to this version of the S class I would look for a S55 kompressor. Or if you don’t care for speed, a well maintained S320 Diesel really is a lot of car for the money, but it would be hard to find one with low miles I imagine. Hope this helps

    • @Stormy177
      @Stormy177 3 года назад

      @@smileoftenatsea Brilliant, thank you! I do under 5k mostly motorway miles per year, so I'm looking for something comfortable and quiet, but with a turn of speed when required. The S600 being lethargic kinda surprises me as its 0-60 time on AutoTrader looks respectable, but it is their ultimate wafting machine so I guess you would go for an AMG model over a bigger-engined regular model if performance is important. Happy to hear that the AMG versions don't compromise on comfort when cruising, as that was my biggest concern when considering them.
      I don't suppose you've had any other cars you'd recommend I consider for limited-mileage motorway cruising with performance when required...? 😉

    • @smileoftenatsea
      @smileoftenatsea 3 года назад

      @@Stormy177 Its hard to beat the S class for your purpose. If I had to choose a second option I would probably go for the Audi A8/S8. I don’t have enough experience with the Lexus LS, but I had a GS and the SC for a while and they were great cars. I would like to try the last generation XJ, they seem interesting. But on the other end of the spectrum and if you live in North America, I wouldn’t disregard the Lincoln Town Car. I know they are archaic, but there is something about their ability to just swallow highway miles like a sofa on wheels (they handle like that too though).
      To sum up, given its depreciation, the old S class is hard to beat. I hope this helps.
