    That is my dream Merc, I've really struggled the past couple of years with depression and suicidal thoughts, Now I've really pushed myself the last few months, got a new job and will save for a car like this, one day I'll be able to afford one. This is by far one of my favourite videos Matt excellent and was so good to see you all have a laugh thank you.

    Great video. We’ve been doing that kind of journey for the last 25 years.
    A word of warning about the NC500. When you go across the top and head west and south it’s single track with passing spaces for well over 100 miles. It’s full of camper vans and everyone seems to have forgotten how to reverse! You’ll see some serious exotica (we saw a convoy of Lamborghinis once) and some drivers see it as a race track to get round as quickly as possible. You need time and patience.

    45 mpg sounds about right in the 320 CDi.. We had an old W221 320 which was a joy to drive, and reliable ..
    Used about two thirds of a tank of diesel on a trip from Dundee to Devon, 550 miles , returning home a few days later with same fuel consumption.. Effortless armchair driving with a good sound system.
    Great video.. Definitely should take the A82 through Glencoe next time..👍

    Impressive. Cars of this era seem to be the sweet spot between comfort/practicality and reliability. I did almost the same journey from Didsbury (near you) to John O' Groats non-stop in 9 hours in a 1978 Reliant Scimitar GTE. My co-driver and I shared the driving, ate on the move, and didn't switch off the engine during driver swaps and comfort stops. The 3-litre Ford V6 managed 33mpg and had 18 litres of petrol left when we arrived. I think that's impressive, too! More of this type of video will be welcome on the channel.

      Most easterly point of the UK is the prom at Lowestoft, Suffolk. Most northerly is the top of Shetland, most southerly the bottom of Scillies and, since the 1970s the most westerly is Rockall (it was incorporated into Scotland then; previously Soay next to St Kilda had that title). In terms of the island of Britain (as distinct from the nation of GB) the most westerly is Ardnamurchan point (north of Mull, south of Skye) and the most southerly is the Lizard in Cornwall.

    Lovely trip.
    Word of caution, Don't do the NC500 in a sporty car. I've done NC500 and related routes 3 times. Although the whole route is amazing, half the roads are bumpy and sometimes aggressively arched single lane tarmac. Avoid the summer as it's full of campers and other motoring pilgrims who don't always follow the passing etiquette in single lane roads.
    I had my best time there during a dry winter season in an old E39 5 Series BMW with winter tires and standard suspension. Good suspension travel and thick side wall is your friend in NC500. The hotels over there are also cheap during the winter.

    I can thoroughly recommend the NC500. I did it in 2016 (from home in Manchester) in a BMW X3 2-litre diesel X-drive, which I left in John O’Groats for 10 days while I went by ferry to Orkney to sail a 43-footer and join the Battle of Jutland commemoration. At one point I pulled over to let some sports cars past; when I caught up with them later at a filling station it turned out they were from Preston and had rented the cars for a few days. They were behind schedule as the Lotus among them had to detour to a town to get replacement tyres, and indeed I had to replace my tyres a few weeks later - some of the road surfaces are heavy going. The pass going inland from Appledore on the west side is surely among the best roads in the UK.

The first time was when you were pointing to your route upon the road atlas and mentioned crossing into Scotland and then pointed to Galloway and said, "....and past the Lake District..... ". Then, secondly, upon the journey you showed the border with Scotland with the cross of St. Andrew and then slightly later said that you were passing the Lake District. The high mpg being reported by the onboard computer suggests that it has had a chip/remap in the past. My W211 E class reported better MPG after being remapped although real world consumption remained largely unchanged.
    It might also explain the knocking injectors if the common rail pressure has been messed with.

  • @ravennexusmh
    @ravennexusmh Год назад

    when using my folks w211 with the 5cyl 2.7 version of this engine (same gearbox and smae SBC brake system) the best way drive it is to accerate on the threshold of good boost gently squeezing in the throttle, this keeps the revs down and the gearbox in torque converter lockup. but decent torque, also don't go on and off the throttle as on cruise the sbc system pulls the pads off the rotors to save fuel on rotational friction, but when you lift off it readies the pads by returnign them to rotors in prep of braking so inductes friction.
    it likes you to drive very relaxed. i've done a fill up actual of 60mpg on that thing on a 250mile round trip on the motorway.

  • @CanariesExplorer
    @CanariesExplorer Год назад +1

    To mentally estimate consumption use a reference mpg. 75 litres to fill up, thus if the car did 750 miles then that equals 10 miles per litre or 45.5 mpg ( 4.55 litres in a gallon). However, car actually did 713 miles, thus mpg just less than 45.5 or (713/750) x 45.5 = 43.3 mpg. You can mentally estimate the % difference of 713 miles from 750 miles. Diff = 37/750 or 5% , thus take 5% , i.e., 2.2 ish from 45.5 to give 43.3 mpg. In summary, multiply litres to fill u by 10 and compare to miles achieved. Parity means 45.5 mpg, adjust accordingly.

    About the mileage, all three of the diesel Mercedes that I owned seldom achieved better than 30 mpg, although I was pleased with the mileage considering the weight and size of the cars. All three were good cars with zero mechanical problems, and they aged well.
    I now drive a hybrid that gets around 47 mpg at best, and has been troublesome for a Toyota. Anything saved at the pump went into the mechanic's pocket.

    I’ve driven to Inverness, the Isle of Skye & John O’Groats too but in my old w126s ( 1984 500SEC & 1988 560SEL ). The mpg was what you’d expect from a range that debuted in the 80s but that aside they were both absolutely fantastic. Not once did I worry about making it back to SW London. I also had a 2003 petrol S500 lwb which was an expensive nightmare from the first to the last day of my ownership but it drove beautifully thanks to the mega ruinous ABC suspension. I enjoyed this video , it really was excellent but you need to share the driving. It’s less dangerous. Sadly the expanded ULEZ has made old S class diesels (as well as many other fine cars ) almost obsolete here in London. Anyway keep making great content and more videos like this one please.

I took my 1937 Bentley from the south west of England to Lake Garda, Florence, Austria, and back. -all on its original electrics (press the wiper button and the horn goes off - or something else). All through my “holiday” I was totally stressed - fuel, oil pressure, water temperature, tyres, I was constantly on edge. But I made it. There and back. And when I got home, I realised that I had created my own adventure - with the help of my Bentley. The “holiday” was rubbish because of the stress. The memory was priceless. ❤

See you in a few 100 thousand miles. I'm also averaging 40+,mpg on a run, and the glow plug light comes on occasionally along with the esp light coming on and off very quickly on start up, the airmatic light comes on when it's not happy but that's mostly because mine is lowered on adjustable lowering links that trick the computer's ride height.
