@@mokhosh it's part of UK culture in general to ask critical questions, to probe and investigate, to even ask controversial questions to get a interesting conversation or debate going. Growing up in the UK we accept this as the norm, RUclips viewers from abroad seem to get triggered by this, perhaps it's not normal in your media culture to be passive aggressive.
The answer could have been straightforward and to the point "If it's a females-only prayer space, there would a be female Imam. If it's mixed with separate female prayers spaces as most mosques tend to be, then there will be a male Imam but there will be female leaders/teachers for various women's committees. Women are not allowed to lead men in prayers in Islam." That's it. Where the confusion here? That's just the rule of the religion. If the journalist is truly invested in having a fruitful discussion, then a broad discussion around women's role in chaplaincy can follow. The constant question dodging is what gets to me. We should also be prepared to answer such questions when in a media-facing role.
That would also probably cause a controversy. She might have wanted to maintain a peaceful image and gain the favour of the public, since she’s in front of a huge audience who’s majority might not agree with Islam. I think it was best to dodge the question. And whoever is truly interested in its answer, can definitely receive one from a scholar who feels more freedom in expressing his/her opinion, instead of someone who’s being purposefully cornered and pressured live on air.
I guess I must agree that Zara handled the interview well by dodging the unimportant questions that not have any meaning in what she do as a leader of MCB
I totally agree. Short answer would have been a Yes or a No. That would have ended the same question being asked over and over again. What the interviewer gains by whatever answer was given, I don't know.
Imams are not the same as Rabbis and Priests. Imams r simply figures who lead the prayers of the mosque. For example you can see children leading the prayers in Ramadan, quite a common scenario. It doesn’t mean Imam is someone who is authoritative or very knowledgeable, whereas Rabbis and Priests study for a long time to become what they are. This “interview” was nothing short of a harassment. The interviewer herself lacks the knowledge what “Imam” even means.
bolobolo bolo sir..nobody is encouraged to have more than one spouse, it’s an option when a man meets all of the qualifications to provide for the wives equally and each wife agrees. if you don’t agree with this then that’s fine, but stop trying to use that as an argument against islam when you aren’t well informed on this topic
bolobolo bolo but you literally said “islam encourages men..”? no it’s not a problem that women cant have more than one spouse because these aren’t love marriages, and in fact any man that has more than one spouse due to “love” or lust is sinning. the role of men in islam is to provide for the family, a man might take in another woman to provide for her and her children if she has any. but this is if and only if he has enough money to provide for the entire family, and meets many other qualifications. a woman doesn’t marry more than one spouse because we’re not obligated to provide for men or their children. polygamy is forbidden when the reason is romantic “love” or lust. also women can lead other women and children in prayer but if it’s a mix of adult men and women then men lead, i’m not gonna make an excuse for that
bolobolo bolo you read my comment wrong, both men and women are forbidden to marry more than one person at a time due to romantic love or lust. no that is not always the case, but i’m just saying the role of men in islam. if the man is present then he is obligated to provide for the family. i’m saying that is the only reason islam allows polygamy, but i’m not naive enough to think that some men won’t take advantage of this for their own benefit. again, i’m just talking about islam no i never said that men are more capable of love..?
@@matrix5062 Sadly, your itellect regarding this topic is quite sparse. This what the Bible says: "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." In islam woman do not lead prayers in mosques instead they produce and teach those men who go on to lead prayers, lead countries etc... in other words our women have a much greater role than leading prayers. Quran is the only religion book that praise women through out the book in fact in the Quran there is a whole Surah named WOMEN and another named after one of the four greatest women ever walked on this planet. MARRY peace and prayers be upon her
Why are women so obsessed with everything woman, woman rights, woman woman wahhhhmmmmuuunnn... Like seriously, when we talk about Islam we shift our focus to Allah SWT and His Prophet pbuh, we shift our focus to justice and fairness. We focus on the fact that Islam is the Truth from Allah SWT.
What is so sad here, is not that most know why she is asking... it is the fact they lie about the truth, or at least... avoid the correct answer as if the creators word Is shamfull...? Which muslim country have you seen female imams?? A Musimah cannot lead men in prayer. And even if it was allowed I wouldn't definitely opt for my daughter to stick her bottom up into the faces of men standing behind her while bowing down and prostrating. It goes against modesty and maybe one reason why its not allowed in Islam.
@@toobad9295 Please keep in mind that modesty implies differently for both men and women in Islam. For example: Women are required to cover their entire body while men to only cover from navel to knees. Modesty of eyes is though the same. Also men tend to fall into lust and get sexually aroused lot more easily than women and we do observe that in our daily lives. And you didn't get my point: I did not say if it's okay or not for those behind the Imam..I said 'I' would not want me or my daughter to be in a situation where I have to do such bodily maneuvers standing in front of a multitude of strange men. And I think most muslim women feel the same way.
@@mtaqi7240 no, men's awrah is from their navel to their knees which means their behind should be just as covered and unseen as with women women get aroused too but women are always taught to control it and hide it whereas with men the blame is always put on women and how can you even think of people's behind when you're praying? men are supposed to lower their gaze yet again men's responsibility is put on the women

A woman can be a amam only if women pray behind her. Because when we pray we have to kneel and bow down and by doing that we make such poses which may divert the attention of men praying behind women. From my understanding, men and women in Islam has different roles and responsibilities. For any jumaah prayers, it is obligated for men to lead the prayer. But female is not obligated to do so. However, in a room that only occupies woman and no men seen these women can lead prayers to each other. So this is beautiful in Islam. Women doesnt have to compete with men in all areas. It's shocking that a Muslim woman can't answer a question as simple as this. "Muslim women can't lead a prayer because our religion says so" would be sufficient.
When Christians and Jews start eating pork although prohibited in their literatures, that does not mean Muslim should take a lead from that. Similarly, when Christians and Jews start having women leading their prayers, we Muslims don't have to follow that. Bear in mind that Islamic prayers and requirements are not merely traditions. They are Allah's instruction that we must follow. That is why Quran remains unaltered after so many years.
Men and women have different responsibilities in Islam. Men generally have the responsibility to go to the Masjid and pray, women dont have that type of responsibility, So they are given flexibility to pray at home. This is a type of mercy from Allah to women. She seemed to be from an anti muslim organisation or background.
So, why did she not answer with the above reasoning? Oh I see, a woman cannot do the same things as a man within Islam… and that fact, would be to controversial to the BBC snow flake...
She didn't handle it well. She waffled and didn't respect the journalist by refusing to answer a simple question, which is WHY aren't there women imams?

This is so uncomfy to watch. As a Christian, I can only applaud my Muslim brothers and sisters for being so dedicated and consistent to their holy books teachings. In my particular Christian denomination, women do not lead groups of men either. I’ve personally never once been offended by this. I’m a very religious, opinionated woman. I don’t feel suppressed one bit. Women have a tremendous role in my faith, and we also guide and lead other women. I believe God didn’t call us to be the spiritual leaders because He knew our plates were already full with everything else our family and communities demand of us. This is where the men were called to lead, and I gladly appreciate them doing so. I’m sure Muslim women are incredible religious figures in their homes, and in other groups of women. Let men step up, and do this one thing. Sheesh. I don’t get why the journalist had a vendetta against this poor woman. 😫
It is our duty to answer such a question. She asked that question because she was curious. And we shouldnt blame her for that. May Allah give her the light of Islam. Amiin.

The interviewer really doesn't understand the term of imam. Imam is a person who LEADING. Of course woman can be imam for other woman. But if men are there, we will lead the prayer. Same goes to a family. The man will lead his family because he hold many responsibilities to his family but that doesn't mean woman doesn't have right or turn down in Islam. Woman have same right with man but slightly in different terms. Prophet Muhammad was asked by his companion who he should pay his respect to. The prophet said 3 times for mother then after that the fourth time is the father. Anyone who disobey his mother will not be accept into the heaven. I am with you a million times in hating this type of journalism she keeps asking the same question over and over again faking a look of interest as if to prove something in her own mind of preconceived ideas about Islam
Yes, maybe there aren't many women imams, and the reason for that is simple. it's because men are the ones who have to pray in groups at the mosque, but women, in the other hand, can pray in their houses or any other place, and they don't have to pray in a group, therefore they don't need an imam.
Actually, woman can lead other woman to pray. Same goes to children. A mother can be imam for her children at home. So the children familiar to pray in group

Link: worldcrunch.com/culture-society/women-imams-around-the-world-challenge-male-dominated-islam So, I don't see why muslim are offended by the interviewer's question.
It is a meaningless question that is why it is offending, because the reporter knows that the answer is 'no'. However, there will never be enough time to explain how and why that is the case and that it is in no way degrading women's stance. Also, the intervied said 'did you mean chaplins' because chaplins and scholars (whcih could even be more knowledgeable and are higher than Imams) can be females. So, why stress on the Imam part if a female can be at a higher academic level?! The only explanation is that the reporter is just desiring to get a certain answer and ending the discussions with it
Also, the female imams that are in the link provided are not part of mainstream orthodox Islam (i.e the normal Islam and not the amalgamations that are designed to satisfy everyone except God). So, referring to them will even cause a bigger issue, especially among Muslims.

@Rajesh VengadesanThis is inappropriate and is not true.
Imams are not the same as Rabbis and Priests. Imams r simply figures who lead the prayers of the mosque. For example you can see children leading the prayers in Ramadan, quite a common scenario. It doesn’t mean Imam is someone who is authoritative or very knowledgeable, whereas Rabbis and Priests study for a long time to become what they are.

bolobolo bolo sir..nobody is encouraged to have more than one spouse, it’s an option when a man meets all of the qualifications to provide for the wives equally and each wife agrees. if you don’t agree with this then that’s fine, but stop trying to use that as an argument against islam when you aren’t well informed on this topic
bolobolo bolo but you literally said “islam encourages men..”? no it’s not a problem that women cant have more than one spouse because these aren’t love marriages, and in fact any man that has more than one spouse due to “love” or lust is sinning. the role of men in islam is to provide for the family, a man might take in another woman to provide for her and her children if she has any. but this is if and only if he has enough money to provide for the entire family, and meets many other qualifications. a woman doesn’t marry more than one spouse because we’re not obligated to provide for men or their children.
polygamy is forbidden when the reason is romantic “love” or lust.
also women can lead other women and children in prayer but if it’s a mix of adult men and women then men lead, i’m not gonna make an excuse for that

And even if it was allowed I wouldn't definitely opt for my daughter to stick her bottom up into the faces of men standing behind her while bowing down and prostrating. It goes against modesty and maybe one reason why its not allowed in Islam.
@@mtaqi7240 lol but it's okay for men to stick their bottom into the faces of women? thought modesty was meant for both men and women
@@mtaqi7240 no, men's awrah is from their navel to their knees which means their behind should be just as covered and unseen as with women
women get aroused too but women are always taught to control it and hide it whereas with men the blame is always put on women
and how can you even think of people's behind when you're praying? men are supposed to lower their gaze yet again men's responsibility is put on the women
Great... Now apparently, we need to be doing EVERYTHING a man does, in order to be of value.
Something I have always found deeply disturbing by this "for men and women to be equal, they need to be able to do the same things."
One of my friends worked in an overseas posting for a while. Several of her female colleagues were assaulted while out jogging on their days off. When she and the other women asked to be allowed to carry pepper spray, their workplaces Women's Feminist Club thing vehemently objected because "women are the same as men and they don't need an additional weapon to fight off a man." It was insane.
Not only does this kind of ideology devalue the incredible abilities unique to women, it also actively puts us at risk in numerous ways.

bolobolo bolo no of course not, women can definitely rape men and i didn’t mean to invalidate men who were raped. but i’m not talking about rape at all, it’s just what’s commonly attractive to the other gender. for example a straight female may think men with veins are attractive because it seems “masculine”, while a straight male may not like veins on a female because it doesn’t seem “feminine”. there’s just a difference in what we may find attractive

Dr. Zakir Naik can definitely precise and clear answer about this question
dude... he has vast knowledge and memory to boost...
A woman can be a amam only if women pray behind her. Because when we pray we have to kneel and bow down and by doing that we make such poses which may divert the attention of men praying behind women. That's why neither women are allowed to pray infront of men nor they can pray together as there is a physical contact of shoulder to shoulderwhen we pray together. We understand our each roles. And these differences does not mean men are superior than woman. In Islam the Quran says that men and women are equal in the eyes of God. So that means women in Islam still get the same reward as men eventhough our roles are different.
Who said anything about competing? The problem is most have an issue with female imams. I'm sure if one wants to lead a prayers for everyone. It's simply not allowed.

It's shocking that a Muslim woman can't answer a question as simple as this. "Muslim women can't lead a prayer because our religion says so" would be sufficient.
Women have always been the backbone of knowledge
When Christians and Jews start eating pork although prohibited in their literatures, that does not mean Muslim should take a lead from that. Similarly, when Christians and Jews start having women leading their prayers, we Muslims don't have to follow that. Bear in mind that Islamic prayers and requirements are not merely traditions. They are Allah's instruction that we must follow. That is why Quran remains unaltered after so many years.
Do you now wonder why Muslims are always behind? 😊

Men and women have different responsibilities in Islam.
Men generally have the responsibility to go to the Masjid and pray, women dont have that type of responsibility, So they are given flexibility to pray at home. This is a type of mercy from Allah to women.

We don't need to adhere to anybody's rules. We've got Islam already 😊. Equity and equality depending on the role. Islam is realistic and not based on fantasy as your system is.
Didn't your moon god ride to allah in a horse drawn chariot or something stupid? Talk about fantasy
@ If you think that Al-Buraq is a fantasy then the universe is a fantasy too. The one who created the universe is capable of creating Al-Buraq. As for what I talked about, It has nothing to do with metaphysics. Islam is rational in how It deals with life and whatever comes with it, be it the gender differences, human capabilities,... If you are so ignorant of what metaphysics is. You better shut up. You're embarrassing yourself by bringing up Al-Buraq. bring up something new dummy.
Simply tell them a woman is not allowed to lead men in prayer, menses pregnancy etc plus a woman being in contact with non-mahram men makes it not appropriate

Scared of being exposed or being made to look bad? Maybe, just maybe, the issue is that religious people are too sensitive and protective about their faith.

There are term " heaven is under the mother's feet". This is how high Islam put woman status in Islam.

Yes, maybe there aren't many women imams, and the reason for that is simple. it's because men are the ones who have to pray in groups at the mosque, but women, in the other hand, can pray in their houses or any other place, and they don't have to pray in a group, therefore they don't need an imam.
This is the actual answer to that question 👍
Actually, woman can lead other woman to pray. Same goes to children. A mother can be imam for her children at home. So the children familiar to pray in group

That is a straightforward question!
Either you say "Yes, there are female imams." or "No, there aren't any female imams."

Is it wrong for non-muslims to ask the muslims questions?
Note: A search on the Net showed that there are indeed female imams all around the world.
Link: worldcrunch.com/culture-society/women-imams-around-the-world-challenge-male-dominated-islam
So, I don't see why muslim are offended by the interviewer's question.
