- Today we are excited to share with you some of our favorite childhood movies, as well as some of the movies we plan on showing to our children. As you know, we are screen free in our normal life. However, maybe once every two months, we do a family movie night. We do have a running list of what we are going to watch with our children. We will also share some of the movies that have impacted our life as adults that we may or may not show to our children.
Something we look for in a movie are the family relationships. Something can be rated G and totally be undermining the family culture and values we want to put into our children. When we think of anything our children are consuming, we are thinking - What are the ideas that they are cultivating from this? Are they getting new ideas that are inspirational, shaping their moral character, giving them vision for the future or are these ideas corrupting, corroding or just zapping their brains with nothing worthwhile in the film? Unfortunately, there is a lot of stupidity in children’s media.
Here is the list of movies we talk about in today’s podcast:
Elisha:
- The Sound of Music
- The Happiest Millionaire
- Swiss Family Robinson (1960 Disney version)
Katie:
- Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Hayley Mills films:
- The Parent Trap (1961)
- Pollyanna (1960)
- That Darn Cat! (1965)
- My Fair Lady
- Cheaper by the Dozen (1950)

For adults a clean & romantic and adventurous movie I love is “The Count of Monte Cristo”! 😀
Where The Red Fern Grows is really, really good too♡
You guys need to check out the old TV series "The Waltons." Your family will love it! You also forgot the Anne of Green Gables series with Megan Follows. Another good Hayley Mills film is Summer Magic. Elisha, I think you would really like Horatio Hornblower.
Yes!!! The Walton's are a big one in our house.
Yes the Walton's little house on the prairie and Anne of Green gables.
We loved summer magic growing up.
Oh my word! "The Happiest Millionaire" was my FAVE growing up.
We sing those songs here all the time.
Such a solid list.
We recently showed our kiddos "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and they LOVED it.
They were all rooting for the Pontipee brothers in the barn raising scene.
Love Swiss Family Robinson... one of my all time favorites.
I loved the discussion on The Sound of Music, and all the attention to how the family functions in the movies. I’ve never observed the interaction between Maria and the captain as well as you noted. I’ll need to watch it again more carefully.
7 Brides for 7 brothers is so good!! Watch the director's cut, too. It's really fascinating. I love the singing and dancing in that film. Milly puts Adam in his place... bless her.
I loved watching Anna of Green Gable‘s growing up
“Where the red fern grows” is a wholesome family movie.
Good list, thanks for sharing. There are a few I haven't seen.
Some of my favourite movies growing up was:
* 7 Brides for 7 Brothers
* Hallo Dolly (still a favourite)
* Oklahoma
* The Sound of Music
I think you might enjoy Oklahoma and Hallo Dolly as well
Loved all your recommendations! So many of my favorites growing up❤️
Love your list. I grew up on most of the movies that you talked about. The only one that I have not seen all the way through is That Darn Cat. I saw the old Cheaper By the Dozen and The Happiest Millionaire much later in life but liked them.
So many good recommendations. I love Room
For One More.
Love all these. They are movies I was raised with and now our children love as well!
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was my ultimate favorite growing up, too. I mean, what is a childhood without a good barn raising dance and fight to re-enact?!
And I think when people learn that it is a parody about the founding of Rome, and the Sabine women, a lot of the political incorrectness is understood. Regardless, it’s the best! :)
I was WAITING for you to mention Swiss Family Robinson!! 😅🙌 Definitely one of our all-time-fave’s!!
I want to see that with my 5 and 7 year old
"Sheffey" from 1977. It's on RUclips for free. A great story of an Appalachia circuit pastor.
i have to admit. i have only ever seen the sound of music. another movie around the same time but the parent trap with lidnsey lohan is someone who i grew up with. steve martin cheaper by the dozen is super funny and one of the classic. i didnt like the newer one to much but i did watch it. lion, witch and the warobe
I forgot about 7 Brides for 7 Brothers! Now I want to rewatch all these old movies! 😀 If you ever decide to let your kids watch animated movies, Charlotte's Web is a great one.
Come what may. Good movie.
Loved it! Loved your movie choices. Only downside would be you clumped all ‘Christian’ movies as to be leery of. You shouldn’t want to discourage people to not watch a Christian movie and to have a bad view of Christian movies. Encourage people to have and use discernment with all movies, which includes the Christian movies.
I recommend Inn of the 6th Happiness with Ingrid Bergman about Gladys Aylward. Also, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with Jimmy Stewart to learn about congress, politics, and corruption. Of course, Chariots of Fire. For teen to young adults I love A River Runs Through It, My Left Foot (language! But the mother is fantastic), Unforgiven, maybe Shawshank Redemption. Read imdb parents guide or something first. And, of course, It's a Wonderful Life for gratitude and living life in reverse. Add elephant man to the mature movie list.
Mr. Smith goes to Washington is a great movie!
Oh man, I love "Chariots of Fire"
Great podcast
I just heard of the wed extension Vid Angel from Angle Studios that filters put profanity, violence, etc. That's nice for when a show is good except they threw something bad in for whatever reason.
Anne of green gables
Wives and daughters
Little women
Swiss family Robinson
American girl movies
Sound of music
State Fair
That darn cat
Pollyanna
Parent trap
Summer magic
Roman holiday
Little house on the Prairie
The Rookie
National treasure
Miracle
Count of monte Cristo
Indian jones
My guesses for Katie's unrecommended violent movies are either Children of Men or Book of Eli. Change my mind 😂
Ah! No. Good guesses. You get one more guess . . .:)
Steve Martin in Three Amigos is different from Steve Martin in Cheaper by the Dozen😂🤣.
“Follow Me, Boys” is also great.
YES!
Treasures of the snow from 1983 set in Switzerland.
Now we all want to know what that movie😂
Check out the swimmers based on real story and the boy who harnessed the wind. Also perhaps based on true story
Do you have a tv or watch on pc screen
Little women ❤️
What do you think of aesops fables or fairytales
Grow out the beard, Elisha! The shadow looks epic. Either way you look great!
The only cartoon that I really really love for my little kids is Tom and Jerry it's just a bunch of music and they have to use their imaginations as to what the cat and mouse are saying! And usually there's a moral to the little skit of some kind! It's muted colors and not crazy fast paced. Otherwise I totally agree about all of the foolishness in most animated kids movies.
I love Tom and Jerry, it’s such a classic! So beautifully animated and the cartoons have real depth to them in a wholesome simple way
Annie
The guernsey literary and potato peel pie society too.
I just watched this the other day with friends from our church and it was good. I enjoyed it!
Treasures of the Snow
hey let elisha decide for himself, with out shaming him
Heidi
Thw secret life of bees
Seven years a slave and the color purple
Yikes, your comment in the beginning about a movie that really changed your life but you’re not gonna say because you’re worried about being judged…unnecessary. Leaves people wasting time wondering what movie you’re talking about.
