Today I shape the curved viking helmet pieces, then cut and chase the brass for the nasal and eyebrow pieces as I continue building a viking helmet. This is a step by step process in the creation of a viking inspired helmet made from steel and brass. It is a great beginner armor project as the patterning is simple and requires only a few tools. The helmet will be assembled using brass and steel rivets and the maille aventail will be attached to the rim of the helmet directly.
In this series I will show the step by process of making a viking inspired helm. Join me in the shop as I layout the initial pattern on sheet metal and cut the pieces to shape. This is an excellent beginner armor project as building a helmet of this design is quite simple. I will be using brass, mild steel and showing all the armor techniques of a professional armorsmith in this series.

I’m Levi Woods, an Armorsmith and artist working in Vancouver, British Columbia. I love creating new videos to share my shop creations with you. I love all fantasy, medieval and science fiction movies and especially love crafting arms and armour for costumes and props departments. I’ve been building custom armor since 2000 and have worked as a professional movie prop costumer all over the world. When I’m home in my shop I love building art out of wood, metal and leather and love to explore new techniques. I focus on crafting one of a kind custom leather and metal armor.

Hey I really like your videos I'm in chilliwack and I can't wait until it's complete I really want to build my own
we are open for the culture crawl if you want to come check out the studio. Friday 5-10pm, Sat/Sun: 11-6 pm, 110A-1000 Parker St (Parker Street Studios)
If your worried about the cost of brass, brass wire wheels will apply brass to steel when the steel is hot giving it a nice brass finish as well as rust prevention
Musik in this video is not suitable. Te best viking musik is "Wardruna".
I will check it out and see if it is to my taste.
2:25 New sub here, what are those metal bowls called where you pounded the metal with the hammer to get the shape? i wanna buy them
This is going to be a very pretty helm. Sometimes I wished that I worked in metal, but then I realize for pretend combat a leather version of this minus the mail only takes me 5 hours to put together. I love both your work and your videos.
I was surprised to see the ~ $1 / cleco prices. Quite reasonable and so much faster than nuts and screws for temp fastening.!
They are amazing
Could you show how you made the Triangle-Pattern for the 4 Helmet Plates?
Trial and error. I sell my patterns. DOWNLOAD DIY PATTERNS

when are you going to upload part 4? im realy hyped for this project, love what you are doing !
editing tonight so hopefully in the next couple of days. Trying not to rush it. I am part of the full time crew for Man in the High Castle Season 4 and just moved to a new house 2 weeks ago so my youtube time has been cut near zero. It will be worth the wait:)
@@DrawbridgeProps What did you do on the crew of TMitHC?
Can you please tell me what size swage block and dome you use for this helmet? is it 6", 8", etc? I love your videos by the way!
awesome job so far, very entertaining :) thank you and I can't wait to see part 4 and future projects!
what can i use for that dome type thing you used to round off the helmet quarters?
Thankyou so much for addressing the time taken. Great build! 👍
if you tried to make a historicaly acurate viking sword you would mess up by having perfect symetry
they were made to were there pomels were of to one side and twisted to fit in youre hand better
Could you make a crusader great helm at some point please?
How do i find out the size of the plates?

Hi Levi! i found Your chanel a couple days ago and i subbed instantly after watching part 1 and 2 of this helmet Project. I have watched almost all of Your videos now and i know you are an armoursmith but i wondered if you maybe could make a viking sword or something like that. And the helmet is looking gorgeous!
Greetings from Norway.
I think I should definitely add a Viking sword to my list.
Hey did you make part 4 yet?
Here is the whole playlist. 5 parts and then a bonus real time video ruclips.net/p/PLvfaePkhyUVk3gS6DHX9G3kg_zb9Ns_8q
Hi can you put the list of the tools you use. Thx
Awesome work! I can never get the infill plates right. You make it look easy!
They are not easy. That’s the magic of editing.
Scandinavian Hellraiser. 😂
Where did you go, Brother? I just found your page but I still need part 4! lol
I finished the helmet. But bought a house last month. Doing Renovations. Hopefully next week I will find some time to edit part 4.
Great work
do you know how vikings made those helmets back in viking age? how much time they use without modern tech?
Too me about 50 hours.
They likely forged the pieces and then riveted them together with rivets they forged. It would definitely have taken a while, but a skilled smith could probably do it a lot quicker than you might think. Definitely would be a long project. Longer than it would to make an axe, but shorter than making a sword.
nice series! i wonder what the reason for the paint is? will the helmet start rusting on the inside? is it for health reasons?
To prevent rust. Otherwise the rust is just messy for costume armour.
@@DrawbridgeProps oh ok thanks. i didnt know that was a problem
when you want to be patreon but you do not have credit cards
I just love that you want to!! Happy holidays.
i dont have any of these metal things you use to hammer the sheets to shape the curve ideas on how could i archive that ?
Scrap Wood or sandbag....
Looking good so far.
are kickplates for doors made out of actual brass? didn't think those were that expensive. maybe they aren't real brass?
Usually kickplates and other door hardware are brass plated steel.
I can't wait until this is finished
Me too! I hope to grab some time tomorrow. Chain and lining left. new video up soon.
From the beginning of the video, Methinks your Fool has been at the Meade again!!
Daily!
How do you take the measures for these pieces?
I measure around the head, then add material to cover the thickness of required padding. Then I make paper templates for the 4 quadrants.
@@DrawbridgeProps thanks
Great work! New sub!!
Welcome!! New video coming out today!
The first view, the first like, the first comment! :) and I love your videos!
Thanks for being first!!
Thank you for the good content!
Have you done a video on boot armor?
I have not. But it should go on the list.
@@DrawbridgeProps Im trying to get in to armour making, what peice would be easiest in your mind to start with? I'm most nervous about doing a chest plate and most excited about doing a helmet. A family friend has most of the metalworking tools that you've shown in your videos, so I'm watching your videos religiously to try to figure it out. I'm also going to invest in leatherworking so that I can do both types and meld them together occasionally because I really love when the two are used together!
You cant use that, the helmet its too thin on the plates
I don’t understand. It is only 18ga mild steel intended for costume armour. Why can’t we use it?
Hey looks great, how do you go about measuring the 4 domed bits of metal?
once i have the bands made I measure with a cloth tape measure and get a rough estimate. They are a triangle with all curved sides. Often I will make one and then trim the edges, then use the metal that I have trimmed off to adjust the pattern. It is a pain however you look at it and they always need some adjustment (trimming) after the final shaping is complete.
