I like that you show how to make the liner.
You can inlay silver wire in the chiseling on the brass. Vikings would also twist the wires, giving a braided look.
It's always a pleasure watching a true artisan work on something that they're passionate about. Hopefully one day, if you ever decide to take on apprentices, I'd love to learn the trade.
I'm surprised your not working for a movie cast making costumes.
So many details in this helmet and accurate.
Fantastic work! Our ancestors would be impressed to say the least.
Imagine how long it took them to make a helmet without all the fancy tools you have.
It's no wonder swords and armor were reserved for only the rich Vikings!
My career was in film and television :) you’ve probably seen my work.
Sir you outdid yourself this time. You really gave a step-by-step approach on tackling a project like this. You are really a master teacher.
Thanks so much!!!
Best pattern on the interweb
Thanks.
It reminds me of the angles helmet
amazingly beautiful work!!
So good to see this completed. Thank you.
+Tom Lawrence thanks Tom!

Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
Looks amazing! Thanks for such an in depth series :)
Thanks. I have two more videos coming out that are very specific and I hope not too boring. Including a realtime video of cutting deburring and dishing the helmet plates.
@@DrawbridgeProps doesn't sound boring at all, excited to see them too :)
Really enjoyed this series. Oh and bought a power file! (Fastest time I purchases a tool from a video!) Thanks

Wow! ... This is ... Woooww! I don't have words 😯😯😯 Hey! You're awesome! I love it!! Master!!!
Thanks for the enthusiastic response!! Hope you enjoy my future builds. And there is still time to enter to win the viking comb giveaway if you're new to my channel. ruclips.net/video/3aVb4VbLCTA/видео.html
Nontempered and unrivetted its a pity, but completely reasonable. Aaaawesome piece of art!! Great discovery this channel, good job, keep it up!
were helmets of that era tempered ? wasn't it something from the late middle ages?
Awesome build! I would love to see you try your hand at a lamellar style helmet. For instance the Niederstotzingen helmet.
It is now on the list!
Best helmet I've seen! Looks so comfortable! #releaseyourinnerviking
Thanks! #iamaviking
Really nice build. ive been wanting to go for a helmet build on my viking channel here soon but i have to do some more research first. yours came out absolutly awesome!!! liked and subscribed. looking to see more viking projects..
I hope you also enjoyed my beard bead build. It was a fun little video.
@@DrawbridgeProps ill check it out .
Awsome! All You need to do now is rivet or solder the rings... ;)
I prefer to spot weld titanium. But only for maille for fighting
Nose guard should of been trimmed more to match bottom of the eye guard fer a cleaner look
Easily done when you make yours! I like the long nasal.
Next time try an awl or ice pick to make your holes in the fabric it will keep it from fraying out
Thanks for that tip!!! I will.
This is incredible are you taking on apprentices?
I occasionally hire subcontractors work for me in the shop. I often hire people to help on set on big shows. Either way I usually hire people with a passion for costume props and at least basic fabrication experience. I would consider taking on an apprentice at some point in time but would only consider a person that had at least 2 years experience working on set in film, television or theatre in costumes or props.
AMAZING HELMET! I will be referring to this video for when I make my own for reenactment. Just wondering if you place a chin strap in the helmet to keep it on?
Not for this one:)
That was a fabulous looking helmet. Ever considered making the same but a real one that would give some protection against a sword blow? i.e. with real, armour-grade metals and riveted chainmail as opposed to butted chainmail? Don't know what metals or thickness you'd have to use but it could be sold for thousands of dollars.
I rarely make armour grade. But the downloadable plans are available on Etsy for people to make their own.
You left off the two brass strips you said you liked in part 1. Not that it needs them its still a bad ass build.
I did leave them off. At least for now.
Amazing work man!!! Really beautiful armor pieces you make! I’m humbled to watch!
Can I ask you, how do you get to what “shape” and size the template should be, for the four headplates inside the helmet before working them to bowl shapes?
I’ve made a Viking helmet my self but had a really hard time getting the plates to fit inside, due to wrong shape cutout of the plate.
I make the bands first and make them as even as possible. Then I make a paper template that is a bit oversized and make just one metal plate. I then shape and fit that in one quadrant and the quadrant opposite. Front left would be the same plate as rear right. The other two would be mirrored versions. Any metal that gets trimmed off the first plate gets used to adjust the pattern for the second plate. In this build it wasn’t until my third plate that I had a complete pattern that didn’t need trimming. I send a lot of time off camera to get it right and in the video it looks easy.
Thank you so much for you answer!
I will try your method😁
Haha it looks very easy in the video but I can imagine!
Thanx again!
hi I have a juco juki sewing machine as wondering if you can help me out with a copy of the manual because I have no idea how to use the one I have
Make a Cuman Kiphack { Kipcäk } helmet please
i love you
Thanks. Lots of love to you back.
Long time no see
No kidding! Hope you’re doing well.
This is one awesome helmet!
Where can I buy the other example?
I'd like to make one myself, but I'm lacking the tools and the material...
The other one is sold but I take custom orders. Send an email.
Geat job Levi! I have a question, what kind of hole punch do you use for leather and fabric? All the ones I've found have been pretty bad.
I list most of my favourite tools in the description of each video. ► Tandy Leather Rotary Punch: amzn.to/2Huh67S
Id bet it cost an easy thousand or more and worth every bit
How much to buy it? And one with horns?
Horns? You do realize that's a fabrication of an opera costume artist in the 16th century, right? They didn't have horned helmets. In fact horns would counter the effect of the high arching dome they used to cause blows to be glancing. Horns would prevent said glancing.
who taught you how to use that sewing machine? The last person I knew that could use one was my mother....she taught me a little but that was so long ago....can you use it for leather as well?
+Steve that is a leather machine for sure.
Why did you use titanium rather than "steel" maile?
Because I had it. Titanium maille is very strong and lightweight so I’ve used it for years on projects that will be fought in. This one was obviously costume only but the titanium was readily available in my shop.
Bought one but doesn't look as good as this !
Next time order one from me:)
@@DrawbridgeProps which price would it be ? U deliver in Belgium ? :o
@@ThatBeardedWhiteGuy Because my custom work is made to order and is always specific to the buyer's needs it can vary from project to project. I helmet similar to this is usually around $3000 CAD plus shipping.
I’m curious do you have any formal education in any trades? Or is it like a hobby that’s turned into a job?
I have a bachelor of fine arts. Sculpture and video majors with an emphasis on prop building for my years at university. Sadly that education left me with a good background in art history but most of my skills were self taught or learned through my life of building things both at work and at home. That is why I share my knowledge here on RUclips. Hoping to inspire a future generation of professional costume builders.
Can you make a Jack Sparrow’s sword?
great video otherwise
I’m working on armour at the moment but may expand into swords in the future!
watched it all it's amazing to see such skills put to use ! but i didn't really like the constant "like ,subscribe go to facebook etc" takes me out of it :/
Mabey some horns
Real Vikings did not have horned helmets.
@@DrawbridgeProps You know Carl, the Viking,... he probably had horns on his helmet and all the other Vikings were like, "Carl, we told you a thousand times... NO HORNS!" He wouldn't listen though and went out fighting and got his horns tangled in some dude's mail shirt and that's why Vikings don't wear horns!
Viking helmets had a high arched dome shape to cause most blows to be glancing, horns would have countered that effect. The horned helmets were a 16th century creation of an opera prop person. All historical sources point to pretty much what he created (spectacle helmet) with or without the mail, and nasal guard helmets. The nasal guard helmets were pretty similar, but without the goggle look.
@@jatbatman I agree. Yeah 2 years ago I was Uneducated in this stuff 😂 I totally agree tho. Still hits are awesome looking 😂
@@judahmills1731 yeah the horned helmet thing drives me nuts because when I want to buy things to represent my ancestors, I'm not looking to represent an opera depiction of them. 🤷♂️😂😂
Seriously though, glad you have done some research into it. We all have areas we're deficient in knowledge. Learning bridges some of those gaps.
Great helmet but it's stupid how we need to buy your patterns like really y ?
Not stupid at all. I should get paid for my work just like everyone else. You can make your own pattern for free or take a shortcut and help out an artist at the same time.
He gave enough info to make your own patterns, but it is worth it buy his and save the hours. I did.
I started making my own pattern and quickly realized the value of purchasing his - so I did and it was totally worth it. He should absolutely get paid for the hours of trial and error to make proportions correct, along with many his many hours of effort to share to these videos.
I will be happy to purchase additional patterns for future projects, keep them coming!!
