  • Tour de Suisse 2022 is now on fire with Remco Evenepoel, Adam Yates or Aleksandr Vlasov fighting for the yellow jersey in the Switzerland Tour 2022. But in the past, other Tour de Suisse were amazing, like the most DOPED of them, 2001 Tour de Suisse with characters like Lance Armstrong, Tyler Hamilton, Erik Zabel or Gilberto Simoni. Know their story.

Because of Lance Armstrong, cycling grew in popularity in America and for the cycling world, tapping into the largest economy in the world was fantastic for advertising, salaries, bike sales etc… that's why they covered for Armstrong. There should have been a mass confession by all involved as opposed to the Armstrong witch burning.

Life-long US rider here. Lance made it cool to be a rider in the US, even after the doping scandal. Before that we were considered a bit geeky (or worse) weirdos with our shaved legs and tight shorts. In addition, as pointed out by others, he was an incredible boom to product marketers. Everyone wanted the Oakley sun glasses he wore. $300-$500 bucks!. Now biking is hugely popular. People are spending more than $10K for a road bike.
Lance paid $5M to the postal service in 2018 and he is reportedly worth $50M because of his investment in UBER.
Lane is not hiding in embarrassment or shame. People are paying $30K to ride with him for a week.

Are you old enough to remember cycling before Armstrong even rode in Europe ? Cycling was always cool way before cheating Armstrong was an adult.
Watch the Coors Classic. Tell us that the thousands who cheered on both Pro and amateur Riders were in the sporting minority. Lemond was World Road Champion in 1983 and Jack Boyer already rode the TdF by 1981.
As far as appeal in the USA, Cycling was very popular. Bike shops catered to specific disciplines. Some shops specialized in BMX, while others focused on Racing and Touring Bikes.
Groupsets and fully assembled bicycles were plentiful. Stores stocked and ordered an array of parts from Campagnolo, Shimano, Mavic, Mallard, Regina, Wolber, Fir, Weinman, DT Swiss, Cinelli, 3T, Time le Defi, etc...
Clothing was available both from American but mostly Italian brands, including Assos, Descent, Tommaso to name a few.
Getting measured for a bike frame was broken down to the centimeter either center to center of seat tube or center to top. You could even have a custom frame built for your own anatomical dimensions.
Bike fames we're available in traditional steel, aluminum and titanium and they came in all colors, sizes with internal and external brake cable routing.
There was traditional box type rims and aero type. Clincher and sewup wheels available with an array of tires made in USA, Japan and Italy. There was NOTHING made in China.
Any reputable bike shop could build you a set of wheels by American hands trained in the discipline, not by mass producers in China.
We had bike lanes by the 1980's and Racers although the minority on the road, obeyed traffic laws. We had "Corn Cobb" freewheels 13-18, 13-19 for the flats, and 13-23-24/25 for the hills. Chainrings we're standard 53 or 52/42. 39 inner was available only in the late 80's and used on steep climbs, or on hilly races with straight block gears.
Racing bikes themselves were priced between $1k -$3k. Very expensive for the time and Racers we're mainly young men in their 20's training to be a Pro as well as female Racers.. Cycling "Enthusiasts" were the minority and were rare. There were rarely any mass rides for people who wanted to ride casually and if there were, they were ridden by Racers treating it as a trainng ride for a Race. There was another class of riders called "Tourist's" who rode long distances with paniers for camping. But that's not the subject at hand.
So cycling not cool prior to Armstrong? No, with Greg Lemond's three TdF wins in 86,89 & 90, cycling became even more popular.
