- Lenovo Thinkbook 14 Gen 2 Memory (RAM) and SSD Install | Full Walk Through
So just like a lot of you that are looking for information as to how to either install RAM or Memory into your new Lenovo Thinkbook or maybe you want to install a new SSD drive into the extra storage bay. Well that was what I wanted to do as well, so I figured that I would record the whole process of me figuring out how to do this on my new Lenovo Thinkbook 14 Gen 2 Laptop. Now I'm new to the PC game (as I'm primarily a Mac user) so I went into this with not a whole lot of knowledge as to what I was doing! But it all worked out. So if I can do it so can you. Just make sure that you have all the correct tools ready and that you are in an environment that is free from static. A good working / antistatic mat is definitely something that you should be looking at having while doing this. Other than that, lets put our tech hats on and upgrade some RAM and install a second SSD into this Machine.
If you want to pick up the same Memory and or SSD that I bought (again this is for the Lenovo Thinkbook 14 Gen 2 - yours may be different) you can follow our links below as it helps support the channel.

Hello dear friend!!! Could you please tell number of this model at specifications some like 20VD000B ? I looking model like you have and some of them cold not have support 2,5"ssd connector! Thank you so much!!!
Hello sir, I'm trying to install WD sn750 ssd to the thinkbook 14 g2. But it gives an error when I boot up the laptop. Do you know where I went wrong?
It says please select boot device: EFI PXE network (7c-8a-e1-6e-1f-cb)
Really enjoyed that video, seemed easier than i thought it would be, great stuff..😄😄😄
Glad you liked it! I wasnt sure what i was getting myself into, but all worked out well. Nice and easy.
Thanks for this😃Extremely helpful, managed to install additional RAM and was also curious about that extra HDD/SSD bay.
Glad I could help!
Thanks, good job. this was a much needed technical layout review for me - nice device
Glad it was helpful!
Big fan of yours almost watched all the tech videos.
Much appreciated!
Very good demonstration sir. Thank you! I’m buying one right away!
Glad it was helpful!
The six screws on the bottom at the middle and back are all captive and not meant to be completely removed like the four in the front. Once the six screws are loose they should stay in the lower case. Removing them completely doesn't break anything, but the screws will need replaced if they get removed too many times as the threads can get damaged.
Getting this laptop today. Thanks for this video!
Most welcome. Enjoy.
Dude, you have no idea 🙈 you helped so much! Ty!
Glad I could help!
Nice job for someone who's coming from mac os. You did great!
Hey, thanks! Was kind of fun once i got started.
Very good tutorial, I checked and everything is correct, I in turn pried the lid with the hem of my mediamarkt plastic card and it works great. You just need to use a little force and the card is slightly filed but does not damage the elements of the lid. THANKS
Great tip!
Thanks for this! It is also my first non-mac computer. I had a problem getting the ram cover off, it was really tight. The bottom clip (#4) actually broke off in the end!! & came away still clamped to the cover. Luckily it didnt do any damage to the board.
As a note to others: there are 4 ram cover clips, 2 are very easy to take out (hooked spring), the other 2 are tough (tiny slot) so make sure you take extra care with those.
Also, even though you warned us, it did take longer to boot the first time after & i had a black screen for about 30 seconds - I thought I had broke it with the clip thing, but phew! the logo finally appeared. After that the boot time is normal.
I went very slowly for ram cover. There is a tape so it should be taken off with care to not bend it.
Great information. I am another decades long Mac user, who purchased this laptop. I plan to upgrade later. I have 16gb of ram ,and 512gb of storage. thanks again for the comment I will look out for your tips.
@@JamesWilliams-uq1pm I put Linux on this laptop & have been using it daily for the past 6 months. I am very happily using Manjaro Gnome edition, which is quite a mac-like experience. There are 2 small technical hurdles to overcome if you do this. 1) The wifi requires Kernel 5.16, so after install you need to run the built-in "Manjaro Setting Manager" tool & update the kernel to 5.16 using Ethernet. 2) For the suspend (sleep) feature to work you need to edit the grub file as detailed here: Its easy, just the first 6 lines are exactly appropriate: lucraymond.net/2021/07/09/fixing-suspend-resume-on-lenovo-thinkbook-15-g2-are-laptop-with-amd-in-linux/
I have thinkbook 14 G2. All screws except the small ones were security so they didn't come off except the one near the lan port. I didn't have a pry tool so I used an old plastic card and had no scratches since aluminium is harder than plastic, only some plastic residues from the card. I went slowly and started from right. I used PH1 screwdriver. PH0 was too small for me and slips and damages screw. RAM cover was harder to remove since there was a double sided tape under it that adhered to the slot. You should pull slowly and carefully otherwise it could be bent since it is very thin.
Very helpfull...thanks for making this video..
Most welcome 😊
Thanks for the video.
most welcome
Good job Greg. I have been there too!
was kind of fun.
Thank you very much for your attempt
🙏🏻
Great job for first time upgrading pc and you’re long time mac user👏 Please do a review on this one. Im planning on buying the same one
Thanks. And review is on the list!
First few seconds made me laugh... brushes off dust, rings scratch the entire surface - lol! The “‘stick tool” is officially called a “spludger” - used a lot in iPhone repairs too to take off the glass ;-). It is quite satisfying to do a self-upgrade - good job. Hey, now you can play some PC games... time to try stuff!
Yeah, it's not a super-fast gaming matching, but for some games, it should work just fine! And it definitely feels great when you turn the computer on and it all works!
type system in search bottom left Select system information. Windows key type Whatever looking for. Nice that this model had extra slots to plug extra RAM and SSD in. Great video.
Thanks for the info! Loving the tips.
nice video, thank you
You are most welcome.
A pretty simple install for both upgrades. Congrats. Now it's time for fun. Good job!
Thanks! 👍
@@gregtoope can I add a Firecuda 120, samsung 860 qvo or 870 evo sata ssd drive? or would it not be compatible? Also sir, can i add 1 TB?
I'm going to buy this laptop soon. Hoping the shop still has some stocks this month 😅
Good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm still waiting for this laptop to come in Indonesia, great demonstration sir!
Hopefully it arrives soon. Thanks for the comment!
Already arrived!

How much it cost in your country?
@@SubcribeWithoutanyvideo-mt4zz less than $830 in Indonesia for i5 + mx450 version.
very good vid i just have a question if i wanna add ram should it be 3200 Mhz as the same as the installed one or it doesnt matter ?
Now i want this
Ive been happy with it for sure.
That is a big fan
that it is.
Nicely done. Windows has also a lot of shortcuts. Try the Windowskey and X for fast access. Btw try different Windowskey combinations for lots of other shortcuts!
Thanks for the tips! Its fun learning windows again.
I followed your video and installed a 16gb RAM upgrade. Thanks
no worries. glad the video helped!
@@gregtoope should we add 8gb ram or 16 gb since it comes with 8 soldered?
Thanks for your impressive reviews. These laptops are just start to sell. You are really on the bleeding edge! I really like this model and I think to replace my current laptop. But... I've found one slight anxiety in this model. There are no touchpad disable hotkey. It is very sencetive for me. Can you try to find fast way to enable\disable touchpad or try to configure user defined button (star button) to implement this function. Many thanks!
Ill see what i can find.
Got it two days ago with R7 4700U, 8G\256G. Will add 32gb ram, 1TB ssd and GaN 65W charger in some days. )
@@KoreshX nice 👍🏻
You can have three ssd in the thinkbook 14 gen 2...did you know that? Look to the right side of the battery there is a slot there for another ssd in addition to the one that is in there. Although it is limited to 3.0 speeds.
great cooling system
Seems to work well. So far so good.
Is the back/bottom of the labtop that you dismantled is metal or just plastic?
You should always clip the casing back together BEFORE installing the screws.
thanks good point. I will remember that.
Hello dear friend!!! Could you please tell number of this model at specifications some like 20VD000B ? I looking model like you have and some of them cold not have support 2,5"ssd connector! Thank you so much!!!
Just talk with Lenovo's online support. They will let you know which support that.
wow man thanks for the vid.. but Jesus this is painful to watch when trying to set up the new drive. Windows experience or not a lot of this should be known. Thanks again for opening this up I was curious.
Why should it be known?
If you have an extra 2 TB SSD, can you please check if it works? Thanks!
Shouldn't you disconnect the battery first?
just a headups, if you're already taking a apart a laptop/PC always use that chance to repaste the CPU. Thermal paste gets worse with time so its always a good temp drop.
Great tip. Thanks 🙏🏻
I got a lenovo thinkbook 14 gen2 ARE with 1t hdd, i just wanna upgrade it to an SSD DRIVE BUT THE LAPTOP CAN'T detect it even if clone the windows on it , do u have any ideas to make may lptp read the SSD (CL100 gen3 grom) 🙏🏻
Did you also upgrade the RAM? I have the same laptop but with a smaller SSD?
Link to that electric screwdriver please! Nice video sir
Ive just added it to the description.
What is the model of the memory ram?
Heyy thanks for taking such a useful video. I just want to raise my thinkbook 15 gen 2's RAM capacity. It has 16gb ram and 256 ssd already. But i want to add more RAM and SSD. So i couldn't find info about slots that is there only one ram slot or 2? Coz I want to use both RAM. Thanks in advance
In this model only 1 slot. The other is soldered into the motherboard.
@@gregtoope i have the thinkbook 14 g2 amd version. is RAM soldered on or is there only 1 slot for that one? Also, are there 2 slots for ssd or just 1?
So if I add one 8gb of ram in addition to the 16 already installed what would be the benefit of it? 24 gb ram total? Dual channel?
Can we add ssd m2 2280 not ssd 2.5 in this laptop?
Does opening the laptop void the warranty?
Thanks from Ukraine, dude
16 ddr and 1 terabyte its good. Want thinkbook 14
It works pretty good with those additions
Just wondering wheres the HDD kept.
do we have only one ram slot?
So I believe mines is 16gb of ram dual channel. As you can tell, I’m not an expert on this. What happens if I install an additional 8gb of ram?
struggling to find where memory is installed...😁 better try next time
Ctrl+Shift+Esc(Key) it will open task manager, and it shows all the detail...
RAM, CPU, Drive...
So this is the version with HDD, I saw other videos that show a huge battery covering the bottom and no space for 2.5” ssd.
no this is not a versions with a spinning HD. this has an internal PCIe SSD.
@@gregtoope is it the 20VD model?
heres a link ... www.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/thinkbook-series/Lenovo-ThinkBook-14-G2-ITL/p/XXTBXTMI400
@@gregtoope Thanks. Did you add the hdd bracket and cables as options or they were included by default?
@@gregtoope psref says it has touchscreen together with antiglare. That's strange.
I bought one but the internet is really slow on it compare to the Mac I have. By any chance do you have any tips? I try a lot of things to get it running faster but it’s still slow
Mine is getting the same speed as my mac, so no idea why it would be slow.
what if the existing 8 gig is faulty?
What is the name of the tool you used to crack open the case?
Im actually not sure of its official name. I actually got it with a kit I bought when I was repairing my old macbook pro.
So helpful, thx! Does it support 32GB RAM?
I asked Lenovo and they said yes.
You are so kind, thx again! Is it SL20 or SM20 series? Thx!
yes, 8 + 32 GB = 40 Gb
It only has 8GB onboard so you can't really add 2 16GB ram, but you can add 32GB into it and it'll become 40GB, not dual channel though.
@@ld1661 thx! When you say it doest support dual channel, does it make a huge difference? Btw, official documents says that max supported memory is 24GB. Are we sure that it supports up to 40GB? Thanks so much!
Does the added ram make this laptop run in dual channel, sir?
Yes, it will be dual channel (DC) if you use the same capacity. Let's say, your laptop model has 4 GB of soldered RAM, if you want DC, you need to add additional 4 GB RAM (that means 4 + 4 GB). If you have 8 GB soldered in your laptop, that do as mr. Greg did, add 8 GB RAM memory stick/module. So you will have 8 + 8 in DC mode.
But these computer support also single channel, like you can have a combination of 4 + 8, 4 + 16, 4 + 32, 8 + 16, 8 + 32 etc. It depends whats the maximum supported capacity.
Is team elite 8gb 3200mhz support with this device ? Or vgen platinum 8gb 3200mhz ?
vgen ga ada di luar negeri om, merk lokal
Hello, id like to know how much is the max ram possible for this laptop.
could someone help me out :)
8+32. So that will be 40gb
is this has One slot or Two slots free RAM?
Just one.
Hi! Anyone tried to install 32GB of RAM in the free slot? Thanks!
I installed a 2.5inch ssd with ubuntu ... It doesn't show in boot menu .. what could be the problem
In Bios info I can see that system does detect the 250gb ssd.. but it doesn't show in boot menu 😌
How is the battery life?
its not bad. i get about 3-4 hours depending on what im doing.
Only used it a year. Light comes on power button when pressed, but doesn't boot up. Garbage now.
Or 1 or 100 little things could be wrong. Take it some where to be looked at. Ours is still working just fine.
whats the brand of ram?
I bought Crucial Ram
