    Hey John! I was wondering if you whether you think this Thinkbook 14s Yoga is better than the Lenovo Yoga 9i?
    They're both convertibles, have 11th gen i7, iris xe graphics, stylus, thunderbolts, finger scan, and so many similarities. The 14s is kinda cheaper here, but would you say which one is superior regardless the price?
    I would like a better laptop for myself, but have limited knowledge since I have been "tech-blind" for so many years that it's hard to compare these 2 laptops.
    Thank you for responding!

    • @FirstL00k
      @FirstL00k  3 года назад +3

      You know, I wondered the same thing myself.
      The 9i costs more because it's thinner and has a more "premium" build (like better hinge design that's likely more expensive to build out).
      Think of it this way (for 2021 at least) - the thinner the laptop, the more expensive it usually will be because it's hard to keep the laptop cool. Heat kills chips, and thinner laptops have very little space for airflow.
      The Thinkbook is thicker and probably can take more punishment since it's made for mid-sized businesses. The 9i is thinner, looks svelt and probably has a better build, but is more delicate so has to be treated with care.
      Sort of like comparing an office worker to a fashion model - the worker doesn't care if he chips a nail, but the model will definitely care.
      If you don't mind spending a bit more money for the 9i, it's a great machine. For me, I pick the Thinkbook because I care more about performance for the price.

    hello, love the vids. quick question: is there a possibility to add a 8gb ram to reach 16gb? or do you have to exchange the 8gb ram with a 16gb ram? keep up the vids😘

    • @FirstL00k
      @FirstL00k  2 года назад

      Thanks, glad the vids are helpful!
      There's only one slot BUT... 8GB of RAM are already soldered on. So in this laptop, there's an 8GB RAM chip plus the soldered on 8GB - totalling 16GB.
      If you replace the 8GB chip with a 16GB chip, then you'll have 20GB total.

    • @FirstL00k

      For ram chips, keep your eyes open for a good price. Just make sure it's so-dimm (for laptop) and DDR4 3200MHz. For size, an additional 8 GB is good, but if you're heavily into video editing, you might want 16 GB more.
      Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron manufacture most of the world's chips (but cost more). There are lots of other good choices though, like Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, HyperX etc. I'd keep an eye out on Amazon and newegg.

      The SSD worked fine, but I think the first slot is faster than the second. The second slot did not take full advantage of the PCIe speeds my SSD was capable of, but it probably doesn't matter too much if used for storage (but probably would matter if you're a video editor and need fast write speeds... like me... *sob*)

      I asked Lenovo product marketing why they make it so hard to upgrade things. They said their products are becoming more integrated because they're getting smaller and thinner all the time. So if you think it's bad now, it's going to get worse.
      Apparently, people who upgrade are a tiny minority of their customers. They really don't seem like they want people opening up their products (and potentially frying a chip by accident - which is kind of easy to do if you're not careful.)
      As for battery, it looks like it's replaceable - it's held in by 3 or 4 screws. I say looks like because I haven't bought another battery to replace it with.

    Hello people, I'm currently comparing this to the thinkpad L13 since they are similar in price and specs but I can't really decide. There are some key differences: The L13 Im looking at has a replaceble keyboard and 36 months warranty but the display kinda sucks with only about 240 cd/m² brightness and low color gamut. On the other hand the 14s thinkbook hast a weaker non replaceble keyboard and only 1 year warranty. So a difficult choice. Im an archaeology student and would need the toughness, repair friendliness of the thinkpad but also need a bright display. Which one would you choose?

    • @FirstL00k

      ThinkPads have a reputation for being tough. Thinkbooks are more fragile and delicate, especially with a 360 hinge, touchscreen and pen. If I wanted longevity, I'd pick up the ThinkPad.

    I got mine about 2 weeks ago when it was on sale at ebay. One thing I don't like is the modern standby. I connected Levovo USB-C mini dock to the USB-C port. Every time it wakes from standby all USB and ethernet ports on mini dock become really slow. If I reboot the laptop speed back to normal. Anyone has similar issue? Or knows how to disable modern standby? I tried adding reg key methods and it still goes to standby automatically.

  • @frankfunny1516

    I have this laptop (Thinkbook 14s Yoga ITL) and also noticed the max speed of the second NVME drive as 1700 mb/s. Do you have VMD enabled in the BIOS or not? For my setup, I had to disable VMD. Enabling VMD is painful, so I have not done that yet. Have you tried changing from AHCI mode to VMD mode to see if that changes the PCIe allocation between the first and second NVME slot?

    • @FirstL00k
      @FirstL00k  3 года назад

      I got the same 1700 MB/s. So for whatever reason, it's only accessing 2 lanes of PCIe. My guess is it's either sharing lanes with something else or somehow limited to using 2 (maybe for power savings?)
      Did some searches and Dell limits it on purpose (and doesn't tell anyone) while some Lenovo lappies share PCIe lanes (with WWLAN I think?), though if you unplug that, should get full 4 lanes. I don't know what they did with this Thinkbook though.

    • @frankfunny1516
      @frankfunny1516 3 года назад

      @@FirstL00k I think there is something else going on here. It would make little sense for Lenovo to include the VMD RAID controller, but then also limit the second slot to PCIE 3x2. I understand that where a manufacturer has a 2242 size PCIE slot - usually for WWAN cards - that kind of slot is limited to PCIE 3x2 for obvious reasons. But, to include a full-size 2280 second slot, and a RAID controller, then limit that slot to PCIE 3x3 is very odd. It seems that this might be a BIOS configuration error. But, since the BIOS is locked down on this laptop and there appears to be no accessible advanced BIOS mode, we'll have to wait to see whether a fix rolls out.
      On another note, the 1165G7 SOC includes native PCIE Gen 4x4 - has anyone tested whether the first slot is actually PCIE Gen 4, rather than the listed PCIE Gen 3?

    • @FirstL00k
      @FirstL00k  3 года назад

      @@frankfunny1516 That's an interesting question. Someone with a Dell was saying the bios prevented the ssd from being used to its full potential and was hoping for a bios update that'd possibly change that. • @FirstL00k

      I don't think you can fit a heatsink on it, it's already a tight fit. Does it void the warranty? Probably - warranties are for mistakes/problems that Lenovo are responsible for. If you are the one who responsible for the problem, then you'll probably end up paying for the repair.

What dept did you speak with at Lenovo?
      The answer you're looking for is a google search for "eGPU via Thunderbolt 4". That will cover all laptops you look at, not just this Lenovo - but if you want to see how many varieties of answers you can get from those nitwits, call them again to see what the next rep tells you.
