We No Longer Seek Mega-Dopa-Hits for Our Watch Hobby

  • Wearing my Seiko SPB143, I wonder if our relationship with social media is changing from "mega-dopa-hits" to a more relaxed orientation and how this new relaxed mode will affect our watch hobby.

I like this channel for its calm demeanor. It is not trying to sell me anything, but talks to me in genuine voice about thoughts on many topics, some of which I may not, at first glance, have much personal interest in. But it is always rewarding to hear a sincere person ruminating over life and its peculiarities and fascinating to find that a complete stranger on the other side of the world are pondering the very same problems and phenomenas that I am. This is great stuff, watch or no watch.

I hope you’re right about the next phase social media. The fatigue and burnout is monumental. We need to turn it down.

Interesting idea. I don’t have patience for such hyper-ventilated videos. However, I’ll continue to be amused with and interested in the Mad Watch Collector videos!

I agree, I think the "Mad Watch Collector" channel will need to be become the "Reasonably Calm Watch Collector" channel.

I think you hit the nail in the head, with the more time passes the less i want new watches, i'm pretty happy with the current state of the collection and if i am going to see watch content is going to be more insightful and less hyper.

I believe that it takes a certain amount of maturity and humility to use the internet in the way you are describing. I recently stopped my X use and it was a great choice. As much as X gives you the raw unfiltered footage of our society, it was too much for me. I now only use RUclips for the channels I subscribe to. No more clicking the home button either. I am reminded of the film Poltergeist when the scary old women tells the family, 'it knows what scares you'. Yes, it does.

I agree, most of our nervous systems have long burned out. That aside, I’d love an SPB143 (sans 3 o’clock lume), but I’m at peace with the SRPE93. It won’t stop me from drooling over watches on here, though 😅😫

I agree with you. As an example, I noticed the talking heads around the NBA season are ramping up again. I can’t take it. I’m going to watch the games during the NBA season, but will avoid the vast majority of the media around it. So many people with so many opinions. It’s tired and stale. Social media-wise, there’s much good that can come from it, but the choice is ours with what we connect with and how we communicate with others. I’m tired of the outrage on the internet.

It had its time and place, kind of like when crypto exploded in 2017, all of these channels on RUclips blew up, creators releasing daily content then the market crashed and a lot of those channels folded, but the decent ones remained. Watches during COVID took on another life where there wasn't that much else to do and everyone needed some shop therapy to substitute not going anywhere or doing anything, so watches, among other things, took on more importance than they deserved. That's when I got into the hobby and ended up with 6 watches in no time, since then I've reconciled and have really been able to narrow down what I want in a watch. 99% of the time when one catches my eye, I'm able to find reasons not to buy given my well-defined criteria, I'm no longer just pulling the trigger on impulse.

I also watch all the episodes of “Mr. McMahon”. Interesting indeed.
Stone Cold is a big watch guy. I remember reading an article where he was featured in a watch magazine about a decade ago. In the doc, he was always rocking a watch.
    And that’s the bottom line.

I ran out of money. Sold my Daytona, traded a YachtMaster and Seamaster 300. Sold a hideous bronze Tudor. Lost my ass on that sale. I now only have a 39.5 Planet Ocean, a Y series 2002 SeaDweller and a moon watch triple date.

    Warning. Long reply.
TLDR - More than anything, I hope you're right.
I'm not sure how wide you are spreading the context. In the case of us middle-aged men, then I think I agree. But in the context of everyone?
A statement of the obvious. Social media is run for shareholderer profit. Hence, the deliberate design for addiction achieved by the insideous and continuous pushing of more extreme content; as it has been proven to keep users engaged for longer. For example, a 14-year-old girl who watches one pro-suicide video will find her feed full of them. (Molly Russell 2017 UK). Or look at political extremism vs the "mainstream media".
Secondly. Talking of children. Are their brains developing in the same way as ours did, or did through all of history. What does owning a smartphone from the age of 11 do to the development of their character? What will they find appropriate, or need to be entertained as adults. When being entertained seems to be pushed as societies highest good. Rather than plain boring old eudemonia, for example.
Will they need higher levels of stimulation, as that's all they've ever known. Instead of the long, lazy, boring, blissful school summer holidays riding bikes, that we knew. It's up to 20 hours a day of messaging, bullying, video games, and extreme pro'n.
I can view things with the wisdom of age and the years of learning through my own, generally catastrophic, mistakes. So I certainly seek out the calmer, more considered, and thoughtful, nooks and crannies of the internet.
My collecting has certainly cooled off. Partly from learning of the watch potency principle.
Partly from consciously disengaging from algorithm feed driven social media, as much as is practical. Though I agree that there is much that is very positive in social media. Nor can you turn back time or technology.
Partly from disgust at witnessing the orgy of greed that occurred during the pandemic.
That last has caused me to query what my motivations are for owning, not just a luxury watch, but several. When I started. I had £150 - £250 Seiko's and Orients. How have I got from that, to here, in 10 years?
I'm beginning to think spending money on luxury (and pointless) goods is not a harmless hobby. What is it saying about me? Am I merely a dupe?
These are merely a few off the cuff thoughts as you asked for reactions. I'm always changing my mind, and I do ramble on.
Plus, despite being generally cheerful and happy go lucky. I am not an optimist.
I'm looking to order Dopamine Nation.
    I've missed the regular videos.

I came to your channel because TGV hypes it up. TGV vids are brilliant with amazing production quality. But your videos appear to be just you turning on a camera and blabbering. Do you ever even show or review the watches? WTF bro, that’s boring. I will say this: you appear to be a jacked old dude. And for a guy who is now closer to 60 than 50 and still hitting it hard in the weight room, I appreciate that.
