Hi everyone! Let me know what you think about this series idea (and if there's something you'd like me to cover) in the comments below! :)

Great video as always Justin. Always interesting to compare the two. I particularly like how arrays can be adjusted in Blender and the ability to stack the modifiers. I did a project not so long ago for a wine cellar unit with over a hundred bottles of wine. I started it in SU but quickly moved it to Blender for the arrays.

Hey there, can you please explain the limitation/struggle you had with SU?
I'm doing mostly arch stuff and I'm wondering if Blender is worth it to model with.
Clients often ask me to do some design and they always need the dimensions which I think blender is missing?
My struggle is mostly UVs and sculpting curvy objects/landscapes/bevels but it's so fast at modelling orthodox shapes, I'm exporting to UE and TM fyi. I'm interested in your opinion if you can tell me, thank you!🙂👍

@@what-jh4iq Hi, my main problem on that project was that once I'd built all of the pigeon holes and distributed the wine bottles amongst them, the customer made multiple dimension changes. In SU, this meant re-positioning all the bottles (in reality, deleting lots of them an re-distributing). With Blender arrays this is a simple offset adjustment in the Arrays modifier.
Having said this though, the project was purely a rendering one. Had it been plans and elevations too I would probably have done everything in SU (or imported the model back into SU from Blender). At the moment Blender has no Layout alternative (something is coming soon though...), which is definitely a limitation.
The modelling workflow in Blender is quite different from SU, especially with organic shapes and working with UVs, etc but I would definitely persevere with it. Modelling anything close to organic or softbody in SU is a real task so I model sofas, cushions, curtains, etc all in Blender and export a low-res version for use in SU. Justin has done lots of videos on these areas which should get you up to speed.
I currently work between SU and Blender for most of my work but I fully intend to use Blender exclusively once a Layout equivalent is available.

@@dannorris1406 Thanks a ton for sharing your knowledge, really really appreciate it!!!😁👍
I will be definitely be on the lookout for any updates Blender has.
      Wish you fast renders!😊😊😊🚀🚀

Hey Justin. Watched a lot of your videos but never commented before. Loved the video. I also work with both sketch up and blender and it’s good to know which to use to model certain shapes. Big like for more vids like this. Thanks

can i know what your build is? my sketchup and vray seems to keep hanging and crashing. i see your half hour long videos and they always seem to run so smoothly. what is your build or settings to allow sketchup and vray to run so smoothly without crashing? i have literally spent so much money on good hardware and it is still giving me the middle finger and hanging whenever it can. i am so frustrated. please help

    I have a rented garage.
    I measured it inside.
Did a model with same sizes in sketchup but the model looks and feels a lot smaller when I move camera near the door and look inside.
Why is that? Should I make scenes to make it look more realistic?

While SKetchUp has hands down a better drafting tool / process - your point about precise work not possible in Blender is misleading. Blender can use the numeric input when moving rotating extruding etc or you can use with stock square material the x y z scale input. There are also add-ones to scale individual lines etc but we can agree that this is more complicating a fluid workflow.
It is really a shame that there isn’t a hybrid of Blender and SketchUp. Blender has many modeling abilities SketchUp does not but the lack of components and SketchUps drafting (drawing lines but mainly drawing arcs tangent on lines and Boolean extrude) is really handy to have for architecture modeling.

Never said it wasn't possible - I said it was really clunky. And it's really clunky. There's not even a line tool. If I want to draw a line to a certain length I have to either add a shape, then delete every vertex but one and extrude it, or use an add-on. If I want to draw a rectangle, I have to draw a square or a cube then manually move faces/edges to get to the lengths I want.
It's also hilarious to me the people that absolutely HATE that you have to use extensions to add functions to SketchUp, but are totally fine with them adding tools to Blender (not targeted at you, just at people involved in this discussion in general).
I was thinking about something similar with the hybrid functionality - I would love a live Boolean style modifier for SketchUp, as well as an array modifier and a few others. The non destructive modeling in Blender is a major draw for sure

@@Thesketchupessentials blender is object based (maya etc) but I do agree that it seems odd to add an object mesh first but honestly this is one step and then you can extrude lines with accuracy equally - just not arcs lol.
On the flip side in sketchUp you have to deal with groups all the time to prevent geometry being fused together. So the initial liberating draw model approach also has its flip side.
Also snapping in sketchUp can be very hit and miss too. You kinda only point this out in blender. And how you used it suggests that you do not understand how snapping calculates the targets actually - which can not be so obvious form the beginning.
It is a fair point to say that sketchUp is made for certain shapes and for more you need extensions - thus I would not call it a great general modeler.
It is very good for architectural work.
Blender is a much more general modeler. Subd modifiers geo nodes sculpting well that’s nothing where sketchUp can remotely even compete.
I do feel in sketchUp I use more extensions like mirror better scale tools and auch for kinda rudimentary functions and also lofting etc. I think you will agree here that there sketchUp alone is pretty bare bone and there blender has more build in already.
There are some adds-one that offer arch like drafting but I feel they are to overly complex / limited and most times times their extensions rather take inspiration form hard surface kitbash and are more a new app inside blender which is why I don’t explore those and rather write my own custom tool.

@@Thesketchupessentials blender also has no build in drawing / layout module
That is pretty handy when you do architecture modeling.
This is clearly an area where you can see how blender was not made with architecture in mind.
On the other side I found it very easy and useful in blender to extract section cuts or edges to compose my own line work to be then send to auto cad
The truth about layout is that it itself is very limited when it comes to working with line weight on an individual level.
I tested teaching this but in the end blender is too abstract for interior design students - that’s a fact ! My ID students see it very different - they approach 3D modeling at a much more intense level.

Initially I used a Blender when I was still in high school (almost 14 years ago) until finally I changed direction and used Sketchup a few years later until now--., why did I change direction? yes, because 99% of my assignments and work to date always use Sketchup--,.
