[HOW TO] Reduce Axle Wrap on Leaf Springs (Any Truck)

- Опубликовано: 13 окт 2024
- In this video I show how to install leaf spring straps to help reduce axle wrap. While the 2nd generation Colorado & Canyon platform is not known for issues with axle wrap, I had the straps laying around and figured I would install them.
Axle wrap is a problem in leaf sprung vehicles with soft springs, particularly those that are set up SOA (Spring Over Axle). It's when the torque from the driveshaft physically twists the rear differential forward, overpowering the leaf springs. Axle wrap is not isolated to one specific make and model. If it has leaf springs, it can have axle wrap.
This problem is more prevalent in softer, older, worn out springs, but can also affect new vehicles.

3:19 when you said big worn out trucks with heavy duty tires yep sounds bout right my 1992 7.3 idi got some awful axle wrap 😂😂
Lol. Get some!
@@fondupot I made mine they look like crap 😂but getting the job done I figured out part my problem someone did something enough to bend the center bolt for leafs so rear end was off
That’s a positive along with a negative. The pads that are between the leafs are there to allow the leafs the glide on each other. You may stop some of the axle wrap, but now you are binding your suspension. I recommend some ladder bars. That’s probably the best solution. Sure those clamps cost next to nothing, but they aren’t really making the situation “better” overall.

Clamping leaves is an old trick that works pretty darn well when done right. In my muscle cars that I don’t plan to spend big $$$ on, I clamp the end of each leaf forward of the axle. It really improves hook up. Sure there are better and much more expensive options, but when I can make a few clamps from scraps I have lying around and spend an hour installing them and see noticeable results, I’m happy.
As a matter of fact, I put in all new poly suspension bushings, ADDCO sway bars, and clamped leaves in my ‘73 Hornet Sportabout this weekend, and WOW what a nice improvement.
Pads are for sqeaking
What do you all think of Roadmaster Active Suspension?

Pads are for squeaking? Not according to my wife.. pads are for boobs, bloods, butts and backs.. i only got the one eye though..
Straps often bend when tightened.
I made my own from 1/2 thick strap 1 1/2 inch wide. Drilled 7/16 holes and used 3/8 grade 8 bolts.
You can really squeeze the leaves with these.
I have put these straps on four different trucks. Never had an issue with them bending. I like your DIY method though.
Thanks I’m going to use this trick on my RC truck
Have fun
Cool idea just an fyi the bolts and straps used are trailer shackles.
Yep. That’s exactly what they are. I even ordered them originally from a trailer supply store.
After swapping in a auburn LS rear end into my old 95 f150 the wheel hop is horrible, just spinning the tires on wet pavement gets it going. I think I'll give this a shot.
Steve Stoltz worth a try. If you are still having issues you will probably need full ok traction bars.
Have you tried this yet?
@@gregory9740 I haven’t, this or some sort of ladder bar is in my future plans though.
Would this cure axle wrap under braking also, the Tacoma clunk when stopping? I’ve been considering this to see if it fixes that annoying clunk when stopping
Not much axle wrap when braking. It’s more for acceleration. It might help with clunking springs though. Give it a shot.
Clamping about 10 inches behind the axles helps for braking. But it does stiffen the ride.
Yea it certainly would stiffen the ride.
@Shawn Rowlett-did you ever fix it?
@@thatdude4000 it took some experimenting to get the placement to my liking, but yes this will take out the clunking but like the others here have commented it did indeed stiffen the ride.
What size straps and bolts did you use for your Colorado
I actually never put them on my Colorado or my Canyon. But the ones in the video would work.
Do these clamps also raise the ride height?
No change in ride height.
Will this work with a flip kit?
Should work yes.
My wheels hop a lot from stop and go on my 93 Jeep xj Cherokee 5 speed. I noticed that recently my spring leaf clamp on driver side broke off wondering if it was due to axle wrap. Will these help? Looking for a cheap solution. Not planing to do heavy tow or anything. Thanks
Did it work
Can I do this with a 5 inch block on a 2016 Silverado ?
Yea should work fine.
Will this work on my 96 Jeep Cherokee XJ?
If it has leaf springs, it should work yes.
I need those kits, are the springs 2 1/2 wide? Let me know, just want them to fit my gmc canyon with no headaches.
Should work yep.
How are you sir! I think that you got it backwards. It should be the rear side of leaf springs that should be brace not the front side because when you accelerate, the upward motion of the pumpkin creates the backside of the leaf springs to separate and thus should be brace. Please give me a feedback. Thank you!
Nah I don’t think so. It’s opposite of what you’re thinking. You want the straps on the front. Try it and see what happens.
@@fondupot okay thank you sir!
No prob. Good luck
Where do I find this unit online and how much?
Check links in video description.
Thank Q for your help
You bet. Thanks for watching.
Any specific torque you put on?
Good n tight.
40 cubic ooga boogas
What is the torque on these?
italianrelic good and tight. Don’t really know
Do you know if this will stop bouncing on 2500 Silverado
I don’t think it will stop bouncing. Your 2500 has heavier springs so it’s going to ride rougher. What this does is reduce axle wrap from occurring which happens during acceleration. But it’s not going to stop a bouncy suspension. Throw a couple 50 lb sandbags in your bed over the axle that should help it ride better.
Fondupot's Garage do you know why it bounces then to fix.
How many miles on the truck? It could need new shocks. Or the tires could be bad.
@@juanmoreno5187 try some leaf spring packs.
Is there a reason why you didn't clamp to the rear of the leaf spring behind the wheel?
Pccpy not needed. The axle wrap is concentrated on the front of the springs not the back. Putting them on the back would just make the springs ride rougher.
@@fondupot thanks
Fondupot's Garage, Did you jack the truck by the frame or by the rear diff?
@@Pccpy Looks like the jackstand is under the axle, I can only assume you would want it at ride height when you put the clamps on.
Those look exactly like trailer leaf spring shackles.
Similar. But these are not meant to be shackles.

The straps, when you ordered them, did it come with 4 in a pack? Description says 4 but wanted to make sure
I think so. I think the bolts come in 2’s tho. So you need to order a quantity of 2 for the bolts to get 4.
Fondupot's Garage good deal. Thanks 👍🏻
You’re welcome!
Your bolt link doesn't work anymore fyi.
