  • I left the car sit outside all night to see if it would start in this super cold weather. VW doesn't offer a block heater on the US cars, only the Canada cars. While it did start, I am glad I am able to keep it in a heated garage.

    I was letting the glow plugs cycle, I even cycled them twice before I cranked it the second time if you watch the vid... I've owned diesels the majority of my adult life...

      I watched the video a several times and you did not start the car correctly. The glow plugs went cold before you cranked it.
      I too have had diesels for many years and you waited way too long before cranking the car. The glow plugs only stay hot for 1 second. If you remove a glow plug and test it, you will see how fast they go cold. When you glow it twice do the following:
      Turn key on, when the glow plug lamp goes off, quickly turn the key off, then back on again to restart the timer. As soon as the lamp goes out crank the engine. I start my 2012 Golf in minus 30 without a block heater and it starts and runs smooth every time. I live in Canada and in Montreal the temps go very low.

    I find it really odd that they don't have the block heater as an option on the American Passat, even in the northern American states. I also find how much different (and better) the Canadian Passat is, compared to the American version a bit strange too. For example, why doesn't the American Passat offer a real manual transmission on the top of the line trim? The Canadian version has the exact same features on it's top of the line trim but you can also get a 5 or 6 speed, depending if you have a gas or diesel. It's a little silly to sell a diesel but not offer a block heater

      Nothing odd about it all , VW and German engineers/executives in general are mentally retarded when they decide these things

    Just to let you know, your supposed to let the glow plugs warm up first. Cold air will not combust so the glow plugs heat it up. Sometimes it will take 10 seconds. Turn the key to the second position, wait, then turn the ignition and the car will start much easier.

      Lol he did... Watch the glow plug light go out before he starts it

      Jamie Lange yeah but he only waited like a second or two after the light goes out, if it’s like older diesel trucks the plugs will stay on up to 10-15 seconds if not longer depending how cold after the light goes off, if you wait longer after the light goes off it helps them start a lot easier

    well it looks like you might have had a slightly iced intercooler, my golf did this before but usually when its this cold even -30 with wind chill my golf isn't this hard to start.

    It shouldn't start that slow! Change the oil to a lower viscosity, and service the spark plugs.

      Daniel San Yeah they're actually glow plugs now and they actually have a warm up stage as soon as you flip the key into the electronics on position but you don't turn the car over...

    Jesus...I have a Peugeot 306 2.0HDI from 2000, a Skoda Fabia 1.9 SDI from 2004 and a VW Sharan 1.9TDI from 2003 that start from the first try with no issue at below -25. Either your car is not ok or VW have really messed up with that model :D

    clearly you don't know how to start a diesel car! all those years that u drained batterys cranking and burned starters.. cuz u start feeling the clutch after the glow plug light goes off.. when u should be cranking the car asap! thanks for posting video..

    • @chrwl007
      @chrwl007 5 лет назад

      There's a safety lockout linked to the clutch pedal - the starter won't crank the engine if your clutch pedal is not actuated.
