As always your channel handles your intense experience with the impatient driver, some of the Locals, the knock on your door in the middle of the night by the Police...in such a introspective, resolute, and tactful manner~ I was Happy to hear you still thought it was a worthwhile drive~I just kept thinking...what beautiful memories you are making for your children ❤️

Maybe a little empathy for the most remote town/islands in the world being over run with post covid tourists on a budget. Heed no parking signs, don't trespass and camping in Hana has been against the law for 25 years. Great title though, should get you a lot of views and make locals look selfish 🤙🏼👍🏼🤙🏼👍🏼🤙🏼😘

As you know Canada is being much more cautious and most of us aren't traveling much in our own country. Covid is not beat yet .....I hope you all are getting your vaccines. It's our only hope. I miss cruising and loved my trip to Lahaina, and had heard so much about the road to Hana. You did a great video of it. Now i feel like I've been there. Thank you and Cheers.

Hawaii is facing its worst recession in 50 years. The loss from the big industry of tourism has hurt them. The locals should have been informed. Glad you guys practice LNT and pick up after others. Great life lessons for the kids and others. Thanks again.

Yes! Yes!!..Traveled the road to Hana. Beautiful!. There are 620 curves. There are 59 bridges, and a lot of narrow highway. When we went in 1985 we took a Mini van, and a local tour thorough there. I'm glad we did. Was able to focus on taking pictures, not the treacherous drive. On the way back we picked up a bumper sticker that reads "i survived the road to Hana" I fully understand its meaning..after the drive.. :^)

I spent 4 of the most amazing months of my life exploring Hawaii, and your assessment of the locals is spot on. Fortunately for you guys, your attitude was also! You're exactly correct-there is A LOT of history (that happened not too long ago compared to the rest of America's history) and enough locals (understandably) still harbor a lot of resentment towards mainlanders and tourists. It made me happy that you guys took the time to understand and respect why/where the animosity is coming from and didn't let it ruin your trip. Also, Marissa's mandated order to watch the sunrise cracked me up! I'm so glad your family had a wonderful time.

My wife I visited Maui probably 20+ years again and drove a small rented car on that road so we can really appreciate Nathan’s driving skills navigating the van on that road. We had totally forgot about the bamboo forest (which was mind boggling when we walked through it to the falls) and the seven pools. Thanks again for that trip down memory lane! 🙂

We took the road to Hana in 2009 with our 3 teen sons for our 25th wedding anniversary. The road was not crowded at all like you witnessed. We went to the same black sand beach and we actually ended up in Hana and ate at the only outside “restaurant “ there. Instead of going back the way we came, which took 3 hrs in a rented Chrysler 300, the locals said the faster way was to go north and around the head of Maui, we got there and it was even scarier cliffs, and then it turned to a dirt road, the landscape changed and it was dry and the mountains were covered with volcanic boulders. Our rental car wasn’t supposed to be taken “off road”, but luckily we made it back what seemed like much longer than getting there. Somehow, we ended up on the south side of Maui by the blowhole and not too far then we could see Haleakala and then Kihea. What a beautiful trip with nice locals, other than the one probably laughing that we took his advice to take the rocky, dirt road and not in an SUV. 😂 Love and prayers going out to Maui and especially the West side and Lahaina during the devastating fire. 🙏🏼❤️

Thanks for the memories. I've driven the road to Hana twice. 1st time was in a 15 passenger van, second was in a regular car. your comments about the locals was spot on. I got the 1 finger salute a couple times. But I was rather intense behind the wheel and was driving that van more like a local. the locals were trying to force their way past and make me stop when I had the lane. even smacked mirrors with one of them that was being aggressive. But it's memories I'll never forget.
Oh, and you know how you know you're approaching Hana without the GPS telling you? Your arms and right leg start getting fatigued! :-)

My wife and I had a wonderful experience on the road to Hana long ago. We arrived at Maui just when United Airlines went on strike, reducing the number of visitors significantly, giving us unprecedented access to all of Maui without the crowds. That trip was jaw dropping and perfect, from the sunset sailing, Haleakala, to the road to Hana.

Wanted to get the last little section to Charles Lindbergh's grave but with those narrow roads and trying to meet tour buses coming the other way we got spooked and turned around shortly before getting there. That road is definitely an adventure worth experiencing. And, have to agree, that banana bread is awesome!

I have to say when I visited Hanna on my honeymoon back in 1983 there were no guard rails and it was not paved, the people were very friendly. We also had to yield to an oncoming vehicle (local) who had very graciously backed up for us. The road was not developed at all. I'm talking barely one vehicle wide & unpaved. I'm glad it is still as breathtaking as it was back then. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us 🙂

Many transplants who move to the islands like to call themselves local. Many people born here are local, but not a native. As a kānaka maoli (native Hawaiian) I’m suspicious as well. Whether we agree with people or not, we wouldn’t put anyone in that situation. Especially out in rural and remote areas.

I kinda get how the locals are feeling there about the tourists. I live right outside of Nashville. Because everyone from the northern states and California areas are moving here and buying up everything, We cant afford to buy a home now, cant afford to rent, food and shopping thru the roof, the locals are having to move away, and our Southern way is about gone. Its upsetting.

I never had a cop knock on my door (or tent flap) but on one of many canoe adventures on the Shenandoah River, our Fearless Leader lost sight of the correct landmark and put us ashore in the wrong spot. We did not find out until after we pitched camp and the sun was setting, when the property owner showed up in his truck and informed us. He was super cool about it and let us stay the night. We patrolled the site with extreme thoroughness after striking camp and left it cleaner than we found it.

These video clips you shared show just how much more tourism is impacting the road to Hana. Our only trip there was in 2009, in October, and we experienced nothing but gracious folks along the way, but the traffic was not even close to the numbers I saw in your video. I imagine the impact does create bitterness among many of the locals, although your final morning encounter in the parking lot where the woman accused you of camping illegally causes me to think there are plenty of tourists who are not following the rules, especially in this post-covid environment and influx of new RVrs

Eh, I went as a kid with my parents around the same time (when most of the road was unpaved and the rental companies made you sign a agreement not to take the road to Hana which everyone ignored) and I mainly remember us being tailed by an ATV with a Hawaiian flag on the back that would stop where we stopped and meanmug us from a distance. Locals have never appreciated the tourists.

@@hawaiiguy1 it’s the same road. Sorry, it’s been the main draw to the island for a long time. My point, either way, is whether or not the road was well paved, locals haven’t wanted tourists for a while. Pretty sure the main reason is Hawaiian nationalism, but regardless

I tried the trip back in 1994 and the road was not paved or had protection from the 1000ft plus cliffs. It was 9ft wide at best and had pull offs in case you encountered other cars. Ended up turning around it was so rough. Went back 5yrs later and half the trip is now paved roads and much wider. Where the hotels ended back then now extended all the way out. I am sure 20yrs later the road is all paved and nothing like it was.

The look on Hensley's face when her dad was showering was priceless. lol Being a native Montanan living between Glacier and Yelllowstone parks this video has reminded me to always be kind, even though this year has been challenging with everyone and their dogs (literally) are traveling and being tourists.

We did the road to Hana on our last trip, and we went allll the way around the island. It gets really insane after the Seven Sacred Pools. The road become dirt and gravel, one lane, with sheer drop offs! But the view was amazing! In our three trips to the islands, we never encountered any hostility. I guess we've been lucky. Post-covid, it may be a lot worse. We will see when we go in October/November. We're not RVing, but using our timeshare and hotels points to visit all four islands. We've used the GyPSy Guide as well as Shaka Guide and love it. They're so much better than big bus tours on someone else's schedule.

First, the road to Hanna is gorgeous. I also appreciate that you guys show that it isn't always easy out there. It's sad that there's people who would call the cops on you without having proof of any wrongdoing. I'm glad that you guys were, overall, able to enjoy your time there though.

Hanna drive was a fabulous experience, but we drove a smaller vehicle, did the pull offs for the locals and got the Shaka 🤙 But no matter where you go, someone may be rude. The seven sacred pools was amazing and Larry dove between some of them.
Glad you had some great experiences. We can’t wait to go back to Maui- Paia is an amazing small town.
Roadside banana bread is the most amazing.

Oh Wow! Thank you guys soooo much! I did this drive in early June with my friend and we took the one way route from the volcano then to park and then to Hana. It was 12 hours. We missed so many things but I was thrilled to see your video and the bamboo forest, black sand beach and waterfalls! Just so happy to see this and share it with you guys (again kinda). Many blessings and much love. Peace and Aloha! If you ever plan on doing Disney in So Cal…would love to meet you guys.

I understand your experience ! I went to Hawaii and visited all the Islands in 1983 with my Sisters. We experienced hostility everywhere we went. So being from the south It was a shock that the locals were so nasty to us. I never went back.
