    I really appreciate posts like this, as a parent of a btk amputee. My kid had her amputation at the age of 4 and is 11 now. Thank you for sharing your observations.

    Wow. That’s a big difference. I know the joint strength matters on that machine, so it’s not just quad strength. When I had my knee reconstructed it took a long time for me to regain equal strength on my injured side, and it mostly had to do with the recovery of my joint.

      Leg presses also make use of hamstring and glute, since they extend the hip joint - and they often become weak when you habitually stabilise or hold your weight in the other leg

    Thanks for going public about your amputation and prosthetic limb. My mother lost her right leg above the knee due to complications of diabetes in 1971 and rarely met anyone else with an amputation. No social media then so she struggled along with what the doctors, PT and prosthetic makers told her. She felt very isolated. It's great to see what other people can do and try.

      it can be isolating, i was born with above the knee amputation and growing up i always was made aware i didn't "belong"... maybe that's why I'm a gymrat now lol

    It's always crazy when you switch things up in training and realize how strong/weak one side is compared to another just because of the way we live.

    Reminds me of when I broke my leg roller skating. When the cast came off I couldn't walk. A bit of rehab and starting skating again got me off the crutches.
    You're doing a good job. Keep up the good work.

    Jo probably already knows this, but for those that don’t, muscle really helps to protect joints and heavily reduces wear and tear and the accompanying pain. If you have joint pain definitely look into physical therapy if you can afford it, even if it’s just minor pain, because it’s much better to nip it in the bud while you can. I have some minor joint alignment issues that’s structural and physical therapy keeps it from becoming a bigger issue down the line. I’ve kinda fallen out of the habit of doing PT during quarantine so I should really get back into it..

    Recovering from ACL revision, being down for 4 months cost about 25% in mass and loads more in strength. When I started PT, I kept doing everything with both legs to rebuild and hopefully rebalance while prepping for another revision on other knee. Good luck

    I have a permanent Achilles tendon injury on one side. I have a weakness that I will never be able to completely "fix". Strength training is difficult on that side. I am glad I saw this video.

    Heck yeah Jo! At this, or another similar machine, try with your toes on the top line of that press plate, and as close to the bottom as you feel you can safely go. These will hit bum/back and quads in different proportions.

    Had a similar issue where I had one leg that was stronger than the other, something interesting to keep in mind, it effects your back far more than you’d think! I actually developed a curve in my spine, and some pretty bad back pain until I figured it out. Now it’s a battle of building back to balanced, but at least it’s headed in the right direction!

    After i hurt my leg and was unable to walk on it for 3 months i went to the gym and could do 25 on my bad leg and 70 on my good. I was shocked how quickly you can lose strength when you don’t move. It’s also motivated me to work for strength rather than my weight

    Also keep in mind that muscles work in systems of energy transference - even though the press is _primarily_ for your upper leg, the lower leg, and how it works with the upper leg does a _lot_ of work in the movement. So it's not necessarily that it is *as* weak as you think it is - you are simply quite literally just missing some of the muscles used in the energy transference. So when you work out, be careful not to compensate with bad form, just remember the muscle that is there, *is* still working, it's just doing it alone now.

    Load bearing exercise is good for your bone density as well as your muscles. Your joints have weight sensing nerves and if you are putting regular loads on your joints it can stimulate bone density. Make sure to take vitamin D and calcium supplements. Your body needs it not just for your bones but also for your heart.

    wow, this is so interesting! for some reason, i thought the prosthetic side would be stronger because it „works harder“ to make up for the difference,
    but seems like it’s the exact opposite. Never too late to learn something new! Thank you for sharing this

    As some people have already said try avoiding extending your leg all the way when you push up on the machine, keep a slight bend in your knee to avoid injury

    Part of that strength difference is that you don't have the muscle function around your knee that would be helping provide half the effort as you have minimised aid from the muscles on the lower leg on that side

    defs gotta try out leg extension too, and backwards dead mill!! gets the quads working again. i had a knee injury that had me disabled for a while but with the right physio and strength and mobility training, i’m back to where i was thankfully. it took a lot of bad days, but seeing the numbers go up is so fulfilling!!

    I didn't know it was safe to use this thing with only one leg.
    I think it's cool you are gonna strengthen you prostetic side. It does a lot for your hip and lower back as well!! Which might get your need of physical therapy down!
    Edit: This turned out to talking about me a lot more then I wanted to, so I swichted that part down. Is that crazy? Yes.
    Needed to use it after an injury in my lower back. It was hell. Like not even 5kg...the pain just killed me instantly. After a few weeks thankfully I was at 40kg. But I wasn't training at that time...when I do my sports I am able to do 80. But I kinda stop at 60-70 usually. Legs are not my weak spot

      I think it's safer mainly because of the angle and position of the spot where you place your feet compared to where you sit.
      In her video, the weight machine she is using has the seat set above the stationary foot board.
      The machine like this I used a while back had you sit below a moving foot board, but it could only move so far towards you. The weights were also set like those in her video.
      But the one in the weight room at the highschool I attended had you sitting at the bottom, and the foot board could keep sliding down into you if you didn't put the guards back up. It also had a bar to put the weights on to. That one would not be safe to do with just one leg especially because if you couldn't handle the weight, you could be trapped or crushed.

    Good job! Just a quick tip - don’t hyperextend ur knees on the leg press. It leads to injury and it’s just a rule of thumb to not fully extend ur leg straight. I know first hand, just trying to help!!

    You should definitely do stability training on that side, it’s the best way to help even out weakness on one side and it’s a great way to help prevent injury. A RUclips channel called SquatUniversity makes many videos about stability training

    Its amazing to see your journey, but one thing to note. Please be careful locking out your knee completely on leg presses, it can be incredibly dangerous and ive seen it first hand break someones leg.

    80 kg left leg, 30 right! But if i do too many reps, it hurts my left hip (I also had a total hip replacement seven years ago)
    My left thigh muscles are very noticeably bigger than my right, and my left calf is huge!
    A cycling friend of mine one day looked at my left leg and commented “I wish I had legs like that!”, to which I replied, “Yeah, I wish I has two legs like that”!
    It does get easier with time as your whole body adjusts, but I think the most important thing is to find a good prosthetist, one who listens to your needs and builds accordingly.

    Yes of course there will be a strength difference, but it also has to do with leverage in a way. In this machine your left leg has full control over the lower area and therefore can lessen the stress on the upper area, while the prosthetic leg has very little control over the lower area making it akin to trying to lift a squat bar from the edge instead of the middle.

    Okay, your left leg is about three times as strong on the leg press as your right leg. The cube root of 3 is about 1.4422, and the reciprocal of the cube root of 3 is about 0.6934, which tracks with your right leg being about 70% the width of your left leg. The square cube law continues to work!

    I have uneven strength in both sides from a bunch of issues with spine, arthritis and tremor that’s greater in my left hand. I didn’t even realize the weaknesss til I started PT again recently for neck pain and realized letting it go and favoring my right and guarding left for hands and opposite sides for legs bc I need a knee replacement. It is very frustrating to me but watching you I see that you are just working on it and I wonder the feelings behind this. You are doing great to prevent injury from too much compensation as much as you have control over. Go girl go!! 🎉

    I only injured my knee, but used a crutch for a month cause I had a holiday booked already. When my physio assessed the difference after my surgery, he concluded I lost 60% of my muscle mass in that quad compared to my good leg. It really does go away when you favour one leg, let alone are missing one.

    Always do things in split sets that separate out the left and right side of you, when things are more even you can go back to doing things in unison

    Make sure to be careful about over extending your knees, they can be bent backwards with surprisingly little amounts of force.
    I had my knee be bent backwards about 50° or so by only approximately 100lbs. It is not fun at all, and I couldn't walk for almost a month. It took about 2-3 years to fully heal

    I'm a bk amputee and have been weightraining for years, I do leg pressing, squating and deadlifting (moderate weight) with no issues and it has built my prosthetic side strength up alot compared to not doing it at all. I would strongly suggest you mention to your prosthesis you are pressing weight so you have prosthetic that's much stronger to withstand the stress.

    Not amputee but I had 7 surgeries on my right leg and the strength difference is REAL, I'm going to start working at it now but I ended up injuring my left leg because it was overcompensating way too much when running

    I never thought about the fact that for an amputee, their non-amputated limb would have to compensate that much for one that’s only partially amputated. It’s obvious but it just never came to mind.

    With a torn/damaged muscle, its about 25-30% difference usually (in terms of size and strength, unless you actively train it). But the leg is so complexed, there's so many diff muscle groups from your butt and hip to your foot. Having your lower limb amputated, I imagine the strength difference would be pretty significant too.

    It makes sense you can only lift half the weight, you have half the muscles in your leg! It would be fascinating to do a study of strength differences in amputees to see how much each muscle plays a role in each movement. We are trained to think your quads do the work here but clearly all the muscles of your leg work together.

    I had the same problem!
    With my left leg 40 and my amputee leg it was only 20…
    Now I’am bussy to built up my quadriceps for my amputee leg😊

    On seated leg press I tend to use my calf quite a bit, it makes sense that missing muscles would decrease your overall capacity

    When I had back surgery and had to get leg strength back after learning to walk again I was surprised at how weak my legs were compared to before and 3 years later I'm still working on it but I know ill get there and so will u

    At first I thought that the prosthetic would be stronger because it’s made out of more durable materials but as I watched it I figured out that there’s no muscle in it so it won’t have the same strength as the other leg. Interesting

    Also you have to take in to consideration muscle atrophy as your muscles are no longer working in the systematic way it was designed to support your body weight on that leg

    It might not be just strength, but also leverage. I'm not sure how the forces are quite transferred from the prosthetic, but as the leg is shorter, you might have less leverage in the same way that a door is significantly easier to close further away from the hinges than closer.
    Just speculation though...

    How much of a difference is it when you take the ankle out of the equation?
    Like if you do leg curls and leg extensions? I'm sure the stabilization needed is reducing strength so taking that out you might not see the same difference.

    It also literally has half the muscles 🙈😥 the foot and calf add a surprising amount of strength and leverage. If there was anyway to just isolate your thigh muscles in your left leg, you might find that they are closer in strength

    Be careful on these machines. If you lock your leg out, it can do alot of damage to your knee. Push it out far enough to extend your leg but not so far as to lock. All the best

    What they don't tell you about that machine is that your also pushing your body weight along with whatever you set it at so it's a lot more than you think

    I'm the complete opposite, left leg BTK amputee. It's the gradual pain that wears me down. Fresh? I'm able to fireman carry 200 lb for nearly 100 yards. Tired? I'm lucky if i can do 50. I have no science to back this up, but it seems blunt force trauma is the key to improvement... the less fucks i give, and the more i abuse my stump, the better I do, to i hit that pain threshold (started with only an hour max, I'm now up to 6.5 before it's unbearable). Don't quote me on it though. I'm no doctor, I'm just dumb enough to try the worst idea possible.
    Stay with it, sister! It's only a disadvantage if you want it to be! 💪💪💪

    You have fewer muscle groups helping on the prosthetic side, so the difference might not be as much as you think.
