    When you find yourself saying: “My goodness” after some of Sarah Hughes jumps, I can’t blame you. Some of them are as sumptuous as great French food. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching the first double-axle here. Not to mention she moves across the ice like some sort of gazelle out of a heavenly dream. While she wasn’t at her best here, she still put out a performance that is worth re-watching. The circular work was not skated, it was DANCED. Her head was held up and she performed for the people in the nosebleeds. As the reigning Olympic Champion she represented herself admirably here. All these years later, this program is still enjoyable, and younger skaters can learn tons from this. Sometimes it’s not whether you win the gold, but whether your performance stands the test of time, and for me, this one fulfills that requirement in spades. Thank you, Sarah!

      Sarah is an edge jumper. Her edge jumps are okay, but her toe-pick jumps have high leg kicks and wrong edge take-offs . Her technique was over-all flawed and didn't stand up after 02 when she had an injury after that horrendous program debut in Florida after the Olympics.

    Sarah became Olympic champion by delivering the free performance of a lifetime at just the right moment. It was astounding and she deserved the win. She flew in the face of all the "rules" of waiting in line for your "turn" at the top of the podium, and I was one happy skating fan to see it become possible.

      Sarah got herself into a situation where she was doomed to fail after the SLC Olympics. She could never repeat that quality of program delivery or that type of victory again.
      People are critical of her because she was not the heir apparent to that Olympic Gold and she never proved that she wasn't a one trick pony. She skated fine here but... it's not Olympic caliber, and it was expected.

To say nothing of the grace this young lady exhibits in every breath of music she skates to. Much prefer her flowing lines to some other more angular straight line skaters who think they are entitled to gold wherever they go.

    • @psychstudentrip
      @psychstudentrip 7 лет назад +4

      Agatha Lima Let me explain, Sarah Hughes, fourth after the short program, skated a clean free skating with seven triple jumps, including two triple-triple combinations. Kwan led after the short program but slipped to third after two jumping errors. American Sasha Cohen finished fourth, after a fall on the back end of a triple lutz-triple toe combination. Slutskaya became only the second Russian to medal in the ladies' event at the Olympics.
      Hughes and Slutskaya finished with tie scores, Hughes winning the gold medal on a tiebreaker for having won the free skating in a close result. The Russian skating federation filed a protest over the results for a second ladies' gold to the ISU. The ISU dismissed the protest.

    Disagree with what Peggy said about how "normal" Sarah was off the ice. Emily was normal and friendly off the ice. At 2006 and 2009 Nationals Sarah was the only former skater who demanded a "body guard" so fans would leave her alone. Not even Kristi Yamaguchi had security following her around. @@aspenrobinson8797 what she meant by that was the was best performance she ever did in her life. & what I mean is that if u were to compare Sarah & Sasha when it comes to long program performances. Sarah had more success when it came to skating a program that didn't have any mistakes. She never constantly fell down on a jump as much as Sasha Cohen does whenever she performs her long program. Even Peggy Fleming gets frustrated for her cuz she always wants Sasha to skate a program with no falls or misteps. But Sasha couldn't skate a program without any mistakes.

    • @sherryanng19
      @sherryanng19 7 лет назад +5

      I know "quality" skating when I see it. My opinion of Sarah Hughes is that she was intelligent and highly competitive. She used what she had to put out the best programs she was capable of. But her"lutz/flutz" was a complete mess and many times her combination jumps were pre-rotated at he take-off and under-rotated at the landing. I just don't think her skating was fluid, balletic, or lyrical. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it. Why do you think she basically "folded" after the 02 Olympics.

    History is really on Sarah's side here. No one has touched what she did in her free program in Salt Lake. Even Yuna's 2010 free program didn't have as many difficult triple-triples as Sarah completed. Sarah was a lovely skater and I give her all the credit in the world for attempting to continue her competitive career after winning gold.

      Trenton D True, but the 3F+3Lo was slightly underrotated. Several of Sarah’s jumps were underrotated. The most difficult programs that were fully clean are Yuna’s 2010 lp and Zagitova’s lp.

    • @b0rtie
      @b0rtie 2 года назад

      Sorry OP but I find your opinion highly unfounded.
      Triple-triple combos aren’t the only criteria for an accomplished free skate. Yuna has better technique in her jumps. Sarah flutzed her way through; not to mention some of the glaring under rotations on her jumps. Those URs would not fly at all today. Yuna’s triple lutz, triple toe was textbook perfect. I think most people would take a beautifully executed 3-3 over two less superior ones.
      I would wager that most skating fans around the world find Yuna’s win more memorable than Sarah’s. As much as I enjoy Sarah’s skating, I think the general consensus is that Yuna had the far superior Olympic free skate.
