be very fluid with reservations (car rentals, hotels etc) on the Oakland end. My trip on the Zephyr came in 36 hours behind schedule and bring some snacks as they ran out of food on the last day . If anyone is bringing diaper dependent people kids or adults pack lots of extras in your carry on just incase of a very late arrival.
We were very lucky Mark, just 90 minutes late, which isn’t bad for a trans continental train trip, the buses were there when we got off, seemless into SF
Sounds very exciting!! My wife and I plan to book the via train from Toronto-Vancouver based on your video from a few months ago. We’ve never been west and always wanted to see the Rockies. Your experience travelling via train made the decision easy. We plan late June 2024. This will be during our 30th wedding anniversary!!
You'll be traveling through my home town of Galesburg, IL where we have an Amtrak station. We took the Zephyr a few years ago to Colorado. We had general seating tickets and will absolutely do a sleeper car on any future trips. You do a lot of sitting and seating isn't the most comfortable. Not sure what they will have in your room but it might not be a bad idea to bring a cushion.
I hope you enjoy Amtrak. I found the Canadian trains superior in accommodation and food so I am eager to see what your impressions are. I live in the USA. Looking forward to your adventure!
Love the adventure and perfect timing of your accommodations. Please search thoroughly your San Francisco sites. Here on the East Coast of the US all we hear about in SF is increased crime and homeless camps in central SF.. Hopefully around the Bay Area it is safer. Stay Safe there…
Yes Tom we have seen lots of homeless camps on the way here from the train, downtown SF not so much just isolated individuals. Don’t let this put you off SF it’s just the same as all large metropolitan areas. We felt very safe!
We recently travelled from Denver to San Francisco on the Cal Zephyr. We are from Australia and it was a wonderful way to see the scenery and met a lot of people from all different parts of the USA. The food was just so so but enough of it. The staff were super friendly. In the particularly scenic portions of the journey they rotate passengers through the observation car so it is fair for everybody. We absolutely loved it. Stayed in a roo metre which we decided after my 70 yo husband had a bit of difficulty getting into the top bunk that we are a bit old to use that option again. Enjoy your trip
😂😂 The top bunk is a challenge, if you do the Via Rail Canadian train between Vancouver and Toronto and go Prestige class you get a double bed and food is restaurant quality.
THANK YOU!! Per your advice, I just contacted Amtrak about our upcoming California Zephyr trip and was able to upgrade from roomette to Accessible- YAY!! Thanks again for the tip!
Fantastic! glad we could help you Bridget we hope you have a great trip , we just came back from our trip Chicago to San Francisco our video will be out next Saturday Cheers 🇺🇸🚂🇨🇦🙂
Hi Tina and Norm :) Your fan Mary from Toronto, ON. Wellm I had to pause the video.. but I already know it's going to be GREAT :) Off to work I go for my last 15min shift LOL! :) Have a great day you two :) Mary
Your previous video about riding the train out west in Canada is now on my bucket list. I look forward to seeing your videos on the Zephyr too. Enjoy your trip.
Enjoy your trip! I live in west Denver and have taken a couple "short" family trips with kids from Denver to Glenwood Springs and back for a long weekend at the hot springs. The town is very walking friendly. That stretch from Denver to Glenwood has great scenery, so I think you'll enjoy the views there specifically. Be sure to watch for folks fishing/ floating the river (if flows have reduced by the time you go). Sometimes rafters wait for the train to show their backsides, so beware and look away if that sort of thing is worrisome to you. Otherwise, great scenery!
Happy trails! I took the Zephyr in 1977 from Sacramento to Chicago, then on to Buffalo, NYC and down to Charleston SC to catch a military flight to my next duty station. They were still using legacy passenger cars then - sort of worn but old style plush but did have the 1st gen observation cars. I was young and coach was not a big deal for those 5 days/nights on the train. It was a continuous party at night with daytime sleep periods. Now I've been thinking about a riverboat with a The City of New Orleans Amtrak return...
Great info! We took two New Zealand - 'Great Journey's' trains on the South Island in January. Stunning scenery, just a fabulous trip. Highly recommended! Safe travels.
I haven't traveled on that route, but have heard how beautiful it is. I've traveled on Amtrak from Los Angeles to Chicago on the Southwest Chief, and then to Washington, D.C.--my favorite part of my trip--and then to Philadelphia. I fell in love with train travel on that trip and now love watching all the RUclipsrs who share their train experiences. I'm looking forward to hearing about your adventure, and I love your channel!!
We will have a complete trip video in some weeks, so much footage of scenery and meals. We met so many wonderful people and shared great stories over every meal!
While in the San Francisco Bay area try using Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). You can travel all over San Francisco and the greater Bay area in clean train cars that are inexpensive, safe and quick. It's a great way to take day trips to areas east and south of S.F. that you will absolutely love. Enjoy your trip and we can't wait for your vid!
the Amtrak roomette beds are parallel to the tracks, the full bedroom beds are perpendicular (at least one per room is). The accessible room I do not know.
Not only will the trip be awesome ( or have you been already?), the booking in itself was an adventure. Looking forward to the video. Have a great week. 👌😎🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿
We have just got back Anita , the trip 🚂 was amazing , both Chicago and San Francisco were great places too. Always great to go away but always nice to be back home 🏡 have a great week Cheers 🇳🇱🍷🇺🇸🚂🇨🇦🙂
Enjoy your trip! Look forward to the videos!!! Have not done a long distance Amtrak. And should be better that the dining cars are back. Drove the route from Tahoe to San Francisco in early May. Have never seen snow like that. Too bad we are too young to have travelled the great named trains!
Sounds like a great trip guys. We love train travel. This spring while we were in Europe we took the train from Paris to Marseille, and from Granada to Barcelona. The last was a six hour trip and the scenery was beautiful. Looking forward to seeing the footage. Cheers. Nice tee shirt.
Oh Wow, Thanks Tina & Norm for the tips. My wife (Tina) and I have been looking into this route. The only reason we did not book yet is that we could take dogs with us. This is on our bucket list though. We did drive by car to California(our daughter lives there and we needed to bring her dog there). We took the mid Route: OHIO to St. Louis -> Kansas ->Colorado-> New Mexico->Arizona (Flagstaff)->Rocky Mountains and then on Route 66 to California. That was amazing (though tiring). Still hoping to take the train ride to California though.
The train on the Zephyr was awesome, hopefully you will find your way around your pet. I seem to have read something about Amtrak allowing pets, don’t hold us to that but in our research for this trip it seemed to be something we read about. Call Amtrak they are very helpful (we are not sponsored by them).
I love the the California Zephyr route, as well as many of the Amtrak routes. And the fact that you were booked into the accessible bedroom was a great bonus. Glad you were able to get all that you wanted through the chat.
Wow! Great detail work on your trip Tina & Norm! 👍😊 And you had a entire train car with 2 windows with opposite views of both directions? Glad to see that you could, 🎶🎵🎤”Break on through to the other side…..ya…..!”❤
We did this trip last fall. It was fantastic! We found it confusing about the bus into San Francisco, as well..They drop you out on Mission street. You will need to take an Uber or taxi to your hotel. Two places we would recommend is Scomas to eat at Fisherman's Warf and taking a tour to Muir Woods. Enjoy your trip. Can't wait to see your video.
Emeryville is a great station location. Car rentals within 1 or two blocks. Within minutes one can be on their way to Sonoma, Napa, etc. There is also good shopping and lots of restaurants nearby - again, walking distance. Berkeley is nearby as well - eclectic shops & eats! Fun area! As you mention, there is easy access to SF but also to Oakland (airport), San Jose and other destinations. Have fun!!!
That will be a very scenic trip, I think! Our son did that several years ago and loved it. Better pack some warmer clothes for San Francisco, just in case!
I fondly remember taking the train from Sacramento to San Francisco (by bus from Emeryville for the last leg) for a business trip. On the way back a colleague's husband, who was a daily commuter, hosted his regular happy hour in the last car with his own blender and alcohol. The conductors didn't mind!
That's a very beautiful trip, we're done it both ways. Bring earplugs, you’ll be on the lower level so more rail noise. Also everyone will be coming and going outside your room as they get on and off. It’s nice to stock up on snacks and a bottle of wine in Chicago. Don’t forget to enjoy the Amtrak lounge in Chicago while you’re waiting to depart.
Really good tips on booking a trip: talk to an agent and ask for unused Accessible accommodation. I have heard that, when booking hotels, it is often better to call the hotel directly for their best rate, rather than use an online "aggregator," which gets a service fee.
First off, you will not be disappointed by any of the views! Secondly, PLEASE do as many touristy things you can in San Fran~ It is such a fun town. Have a great time! Take snacks! :D
Ok you guys! Wonderful video! I am signing you up to be my personal travel agent! I am 64 now and won’t have a lot more travel, so if you book my travels that would be wonderful!! Of course I would pay a handsome tip to you! You both are so wonderful!!! Bob
If you make a stop in St.Louis, let me know day and time. I would love to greet you two!! Even if for a quick stop. If not, I understand. You two are the best!! Woooooo! Cheers! 🍻
Hey Tina and Norm. Thank you so much for the info. Didn't know there was a similar offering in the states comparable to the Canadian. We would love to try the Canadian but my wife has Celiac disease so food would be an issue unfortunately. Enjoy your trip and look forward to seeing your reports.🙂
Hi Tina and Norm! I haven't been posting comments for the last 3 videos. I did watch them. As for today, that should be a nice long trip. I took the one from Seatle to LA because we wanted to visit Vicoria in Canada. Please do a lot research about San Francisco as it is not the vibrant city as it once was, 20 years ago when I visited it. Please be careful. BTW, can you give some points on what to invest if you have "dead money." 😁🤑 🥂
Have a great trip guys . Just did Emeryville to Chicago June 18-20 on the Zephyr. Stayed at the Hyatt house for 3 nights, ubered to Fisherman's wharf to see Alcatraz and take the redwoods tour to Muir Woods. On Sunday morning was able to walk to the train station from the hotel. Pcs of advice. Book a room, hopefully with a shower and toilet, I was able to upgrade from a roomette for $112 US,as Amtrak has online auctions from time to time. Bring lots of $5 and $10 bills for the staff . Freight trains take precedence, so generally Amtrak will be late , in my case, only 2 hours . Scenery is spectacular, beautiful trip, have fun guys!
We went the other way, was awesome stayed in Chicago one night before leaving. We loved the changing scenery and communal dining. We got the accessible room H. Arrived Emeryville an hour and half late, pretty impressive for such a long trip. Three nights in SF and flew home. Glad you had a good time Stephen. 🚂👍
We love Amtrak! We did the Empire Builder and the California Zephyr. Both great trips. Also did the Rocky Mountaineer and the Canadian train to Toronto. This was pre Covid so I’m thinking another train trip may be in our future! Looking forward to your pictures.
I am sure you know that you do not need a car in S.F. Your feet can do the walking and get a place kinda in middle and you can walk the entire city. When you see the homeless communities turn back and find another route.
@@gdpope52 Agree. I am a senior, senior and was there in 2020. Yes there are more homeless people than there used to be but none of them bothered me and I traveled from one end of the city to the other. Used the trolleys etc. Like any city yo7 just need to be aware of your surroundings. Took Uber back to the airport.
I would not want to discourage you, but Amtrak will never be known for the best of service. Sounds like a nice journey, but as someone who grew up in the Northeast United States, Amtrak is poorly run, overpriced and generally should be avoided. But I hope it turns into a great trip.
I agree that he Amtrak website is extremely difficult to navigate! I live in California, and a friend and I are trying to figure out a trip on the Zephyr to Chicago, then the City of New Orleans from Chicago to New Orleans, then the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles. We still haven't figured it out!
Glad to see that you discovered one of the great "secrets" of traveling in comfort on Amtrak at a reduced rate. The accessible cabin is so spacious compared to a regular bedroom. I know that you will have a wonderful journey. Be sure to enroll(no charge) for the Amtrak Rewards program, it's similar to a mileage program on an airline. Take care and enjoy your weekend. 🎉🏖🏞

555 Mission Street, San Fran is the only drop off from Emoryville by Amtrak, so don’t believe reviews on TripAdvisor. We got an Uber to our hotel.
Emeryville is a great station location. Car rentals within 1 or two blocks. Within minutes one can be on their way to Sonoma, Napa, etc.

Did one last week from Emeryville to Sacramento also for a biz trip to attend an EV conference/trade show.
Looking forward to watching your video of the experience. Our family did the Starlight Coastal years ago in a family room and it was awesome!
We had a great time Claire, there are many long distance Amtraks.

I want to see a Nooohm and Tina video walking through Oakland
Not Oakland just in downtown SF
I am so sorry for the two of you, I hope you are better
We are wonderful never better!
Great hair cut Tina!
Thank you! Cheers Alexandra 🍷🙂
We love Amtrak! We did the Empire Builder and the California Zephyr. Both great trips. Also did the Rocky Mountaineer and the Canadian train to Toronto. This was pre Covid so I’m thinking another train trip may be in our future! Looking forward to your pictures.
That is awesome! we have had a great trip on the Zephyr 🚂🇺🇸🇨🇦🍷
Great information guys!
Glad it was helpful!
I am so jealous ❤, bon voyage.
Thanks! 😃
P.S. not sure of your day but think this week ...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ❤🎉🎉
Thank you!! yes it’s this week Fay ❤️🚂🇺🇸🇨🇦
I am sure you know that you do not need a car in S.F. Your feet can do the walking and get a place kinda in middle and you can walk the entire city. When you see the homeless communities turn back and find another route.
We arrive by train, no car and yes we will walk everywhere and we like the free walking tours in SF
east coast of canada nice train trip
The Ocean is a great trip
So is the 2000.00 per person? Still a great price. I’m assuming it’s in US money as well.
No Jim that was for the two of us US $🇺🇸we thought a great deal 👍
@@ThisIsOurRetirement wow that was a great deal. I’m about five years away from retirement but I’m making a list. 😊
The family bedroom has windows on both sides, but you must share the toilet.
Yes that’s true, bathroom in cabin is good for nighttime
What age does the train company say is senior?
We believe it’s over 65 Stephan
Hi my good friends , I love you guys , please how much does it cost per person .
It was $2200 US🇺🇸dollars for two people 🚂🇺🇸🇨🇦
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Waooooooo, that was a great deal , unbelievable , thanks to the new Mr. Rogers .
Great video today, awesome tips. May I ask which card you use to get airline points or travel points? Thank you 😊
Yes Angela, we used Air Canada Aeroplan for the flights and Air Miles for 4 nights of hotels in Chicago and San Fran.
Have a great time! We've done many long distance Amtrak trips, including the Zephyr. (Also took the Canadian as well....).
They are all great trips Julie
Can’t wait to see your trip. Brace yourself for an experience in San Francisco. 😳
San Francisco is wonderful Jan really enjoyed our time there have a great weekend Cheers 🇺🇸🚂🇨🇦🍷
I LOVE SF! Beautiful city!
It really is! 🇺🇸🍷🌺🚂
Love hearing about your adventures and savings 😊
Thanks so much Tanya 😀😀
When you get to California, most of the people you see will be "spaced out".😂
Didn’t see that!
It's not safe traveling to LA and SF right now, as many local residents are flee away from the city.
not true.......as in any large city-just avoid certain areas. LA and SF are two of the most beautiful cities in the world
You are scaring people for no good reason. As seniors, for course, you have to be cautious at night. Otherwise just be alert and enjoy.
We have not experienced that walking everywhere, no problems.
@@debiwillis9045 Yes!
❤😊🇨🇦
💕❤️
*could not*
I would not want to discourage you, but Amtrak will never be known for the best of service.
Sounds like a nice journey, but as someone who grew up in the Northeast United States, Amtrak is poorly run, overpriced and generally should be avoided.
But I hope it turns into a great trip.
Never the less we had a great trip on board the Zephyr 🇺🇸🚂🇨🇦🍷👍
👍👍✌️
Great to hear from you this wonderful Saturday 😀😀
I agree that he Amtrak website is extremely difficult to navigate! I live in California, and a friend and I are trying to figure out a trip on the Zephyr to Chicago, then the City of New Orleans from Chicago to New Orleans, then the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles. We still haven't figured it out!
It is challenging to figure out, live chat was awesome!
I assume you are paying US Funds for the US trip. Have fun.
Yes John 💰
Glad to see that you discovered one of the great "secrets" of traveling in comfort on Amtrak at a reduced rate. The accessible cabin is so spacious compared to a regular bedroom. I know that you will have a wonderful journey. Be sure to enroll(no charge) for the Amtrak Rewards program, it's similar to a mileage program on an airline. Take care and enjoy your weekend. 🎉🏖🏞
Thanks for the tips!We have had an amazing trip on the California Zephyr John Cheers 🚂🇺🇸🇨🇦🍷
