The Amtrak sleeper class is a first class experience, all meals are included and can be eaten in the dining car or served in your bedroom where there is a small table for two. The California Zephyr train climbs to over 9,000 feet above sea level through the rockies from Denver Colorado.
While a similar trip to the Via Rail Canadian train, Amtrak uses more modern sleeper cars, on the California Zephyr the Amtrak sleeper cars are Superliners which offer two levels of accommodations. Accessible rooms and shower are on the lower lever and roomettes and bedrooms are on the upper floor, that includes a coffee station in each sleeper car.

My 6 year old daughter and I did this trip a couple years back. No boredom between the two of us with the beautiful scenery and friendly passengers.

One of the highlights of my trip with my son was sharing tables during meals. We me a lady from Germany, a restaurant owner, a self-proclamed retired ski-bum, a train hobbyist and a host of others.
We did too, we had meals with two different college professors (retired), Californian woman with a farm and a father and son.

As you’ve done both the Canadian and the Zephyr, it would be a nice idea to do a video comparing and contrasting your perceptions of the two experiences. It seems to me that the northerly route was more interesting and dramatic, geography wise and would be preferable IMO.
We are in the process of producing this comparison video, thanks for suggesting the idea.

I did this trip in October of 2006. For a roomette it was $500. Amtrak at that time was always toyed with on its funding you weren’t sure if these long distance trains were going to survive . The fares have definitely shot up!

Glad to learn that you enjoyed traveling through my hometown (Sacramento)! I’ve taken the train between Sacramento and Richmond many, many times, but have never gone the California Zephyr route. I definitely will put it on my list because it seems like a lovely way to see the country. PS - The shrubs between the freeway lanes is oleander.

What a lovely train ride video! As an American, mainly East coast bred, my late father (Norm!) was transferred with his work many times, one of which was to the state of Washington, but he always said, the more West you travel the more beautiful the scenery, and the friendlier the people! I just booked a roomette on the Zephyr yesterday for early March. Chicago to SF. Rode the Coast Starlight last Dec. and my roomette next door neighbor is from the UK. We became good friends on that journey. He flew over just for that train ride. So now we are meeting up in Chicago to take the California Zephyr trip. Looking forward to it!

Thanks, I enjoyed watching this. Thanks too for noting the costs. Amtrak trains are so old, bet your car was created in the 1950s. Like us it keeps on chugging along.
Glad you enjoyed the video it was fun making it. These rail cars are old from the 1950s and so are the Canadian Via Rail cars, they are not made anymore so railway companies keep renovating them.
Not quite that old! I believe the newest "superliner" cars were built in the 1990s. I read that Amtrak will be replacing all their passenger cars over the next 10 years.

Honestly, I preferred your ride on the Via Rail from Toronto to Vancouver. Just saying. More scenic in Canada, nicer train accommodations. The Amtrak Zephyr looked cramped and overcrowded. The food looked better on the Via Rail too. And I never understood why the windows are not cleaned spotless before you embark. Anyway, Canada tops the USA. 😞
We really enjoyed both trips, both had their unique pleasure. We would recommend doing both of them. March was a perfect time to see the Canadian Rockies with the snow and less people onboard. Thanks Eric for watching and sharing your thoughts. 😀😀🇨🇦🇺🇸

I'm taking the zephyr next month from Sac to Chicago. I have pricing the trip the last few weeks, was $1450 last Monday, the other day it dropped to $750.00 so I got it before they decide to raise the price.

You were on a old sleeper car named Montana the name plate on door. Passed by Colorado" moon" river. Only thing is you did the Zephyr backwards. It's better to go west to East.
