Thank you so much! When I was learning this in class, I was immensely confused. I asked my teacher to clarify me, but I still couldn’t understand. So she kindly showed me this video and now I understand how the vertical line test works!
Brilliant! So simple, yet effective. But I really want to know why this shows graphs to be functions or not. What does it mean for a graph to be a function anyway?
Merethor Okura the definition for a function is for every one x value there is a y value if any x values repeat than it. Fails the definition of a function if there are the same y value but different x values than it still is a function the line test proves this
The vertical line test contains a vertical line. A vertical line can only go through a single x-value, but the vertical line also goes through every possible y-value! If an x-value of a point has exactly one y-value, then the vertical line will pass through only that point. But if the x-value of the point has, let’s say 3 y-values, then the vertical line will go through those three points. Keep in mind, the three points haves the same x-value, and the vertical line can only have one x-value. (Hence, a vertical line can be named as an x-value, such as x=3 or x=4)
Functions by definition can only provide a single output. If there are two different positions corresponding to a single X input, it means it is not a function, it means that the Y at that point is undefined. The vertical line test basically just tells you whether or not its a function by discerning whether or not there is one or more outputs, but it helps visualize it.
Woah I'm back again to study for the finals. Thanks you're such a great help. I pretty much learn from you than our professor. THANK YOU AGAIN, I OWE YOU ONE
why thank you kind sir for the informational video about the vertical line test, my mathematics teacher was not able to have me to understand this concept because of its complexity, but now i fully understand how it works due to the simple explanation and examples you have presented.
thank you man you saved me before a quick that I have to take tomorrow you're the goat man you can teach more to me in 5 mins than my teacher can in 30
It is good that you show how to use the vertical line test but what I was really looking for is an explanation on why something may or may not be a function if it passes or fails the test.
3:10 you can google this and find so many answers on if this is a function or not. Just to keep it simple: y = √x is a function so long as that's all you're doing. The minute you convert it to x = y^2, or if you decide you're working with ±√x, you're no longer a function.
Thank you so much for teaching me from this type of technique.I had understood all the things that you have try to understand us.THANKS YOU SO MUCH SIR.
The vertical lines which was covering the phantom of the Opera mask which was light blue now has become double orange vertical line the left line is now orange to cover the mask
To native German speakers, please give me feedback if the following sentence is correct; for I am learning German. Julio Gonzales ist der beste Tutor für Mathematik und Wissenschaft.
The square root function only works on positive numbers and only returns positive numbers. Because both negative numbers and positive numbers become positive when squared, you have to assume that the square root of an unknown variable x is both positive and negative, but if you know the number (Like in a function), the outcome is always a single positive number

Thanks so much! I was super confused abt the vertical line test ‘till I watched this video. Really simple explanation yet easy to understand.
i watched a couple of your videos and i understand all of semesters material in a day, youre a genius
Thanks for being more helpful than our math books.

I didn't understand when I studied on my own, but when you teach me, I understand now, you are good at teaching 😘😘😘
Thank you, I was confused about how a vertical line would work against the vertical line test.
MR. Organic Chemistry Tutor, thank you for a solid analysis and a practical solution of the Vertical Line Test.
I swear to God I need to hire you as my tutor..u just the bestttt u explain 10times betterrrr

Thank you for actually drawing the points. i had no idea what points my teacher was talking about
Thank you so much for this video, it helped me A LOT with my homework!
Great video! I was confused when I learned this in my algebra class and this helped me
Grabeeee sobrang understanble nitoooo
WOWW I CAN'T BELIEVE !! ITSS SO AMAZING YESS NGAUN KO LANG NAGETS HAHAHAHA.
ako rin hahahahhaa
what
*Just one correction needed :-* 2:36
*Y=X its not that graph it's a straight line passing thru origin with a slope of 45° and it's a function* ↗️
This is like the best way to test for Inverse Functions.
Keep going man!! I really like your teaching. Bless you
This is the most straight forward and easiest way to understand vertical line test 🗿
why
love your style of videos
thank you so much my son I used to be stupid but now I'm cured. god bless you
You are a good tutor, keep it up! 😊
this is the biggest thumbs up im ever gonna give to anyone
Only 32 seconds in and I understand THANK U BRO ❤❤
This is a life saver, thank youuu 🥳 I just hope this came out in our prelims or Idk what i'm gonna do HAHAHAHAHAHAHA 💕
You explained it so well
Thanks a advance. That's so easy since I have watched that video
Thank you for making things easier
Who else just started Grade 11? this teacher is dope 👏👏👏👏👏
Teacher you made it easier ❤❤❤❤❤
TY BRO I WISH MY MATH TEACHER TEACHES LIKE THIS
This helped me to understand a lot, thanks!
TYSM U SAVED MY LIFE
you’re such a life saver
😮
The 31 people who disliked this video are teachers who are saying you aren’t teaching this the complicated way😂 THANK U FOR THIS

omg thank u, now i understand, my brain works now....THANK YOU FOR SHAARING!!!!
Very easy method
Thanks 👍
Ahhh, finally got it. Thanks so much!
I have a better understanding now. Thanks.
U are from which country?
You really help me to understand this one. Thank you really
Thank you. This was very helpful.
Things i learned
Vertical line (or upright line)
If it touches two or more line it's not a function of only one it's function
another good example may have been a side by side comparison of (to make it obvio):
y^3=x and y=x^(1/3)
He made it 10x simple then my college professor
I hv my regents today thank you 🙏🏾
So clear awesome ❤! Thank you!
Yeacher has 1 hour to teach us this guy teaches it better in 5 minutes with plenty of examples
Thank so much
Thank you for that so i understand thank you very much😊😊
This really helped, thanks alot
TYSM, THIS HELPED A LOT!
easy to understand, thankyou so much
Thank you so much!
Thanks man so much
Omg thank you so much I was very confused!
I understand this so much now
He's my fav now
this helped me so much!
i really understand it
WOW!! My teacher made me memorise those graphs without explaining the actual reason as to why those graphs are/are not the function of x :(
I swear my teacher makes algebra so much harder
Thanks Professor
THANK YOU!! VERY HELPFUL ❤❤❤
thanks that is a live saver
THANK YOU!
You know God sees ur struggles when He leads you to this video even after you told Him its fine.
Yes amen💕❤️✝️🙏
Yes
Thank you! God Bless😇
Thank you
To native German speakers, please give me feedback if the following sentence is correct; for I am learning German.

So, the definition of a function is something on a graph that can pass the vertical line test.
Thank you 🙏
Thank you.
Buti pa to na intindihan ko agad haha
Its this easy?? I couldnt understand it when my teacher explained 😂😂😂😂
hi sa mga taga masinop jan hehe
Thank u so much
Thank you!!!
thank you so much
Thanks man
Can you put down the vertical line just where u did or can u put it in other areas
thank youuuuu!!!
Heyyyy what if there are two points(one is an open circle and one is a closed circle) in the x axis? Is that a function or not?
so we can draw the vertical line wherever we want as long as its parallel to the y-axis?
i think so
Do we need to memorize these functions ?
simple video. thanx. 2/226 complete
Thx
THANK U
wait, y=sqrt(x) is not a function, the square root of any number is positive and negative.
The square root function only works on positive numbers and only returns positive numbers. Because both negative numbers and positive numbers become positive when squared, you have to assume that the square root of an unknown variable x is both positive and negative, but if you know the number (Like in a function), the outcome is always a single positive number
but why is it not function? is it because x can't have more than two y-values?
